Yeah, that is probably the worst stretch of Oggy's career, which is wild because this is probably his best team. Woof.

And thanks so much. I have so much fun playing with, planning out, and thinking about the two brothers and what their future could be. I am not the greatest writer (guys like Trekfan and Marshdaddy school me in terms of writing quality), but I find it interesting and I am glad you and the others do as well.

      The Raptors Make a Move

Earlier this month we reported a story about Montrezl Harrell and other Clippers stars being unhappy with the lack of wins and imploring their front office to contend. Unfortunately, there were very few other teams interested in Collin Sexton and second round picks, which tied the hands of the front office. With no way to contend with this roster, the front office went the other way: get picks and young players to rebuild with.

Of course, none of this would happen unless Kawhi would agree to it. He wanted to end up in SoCal, where he grew up – that’s why he ended up on the Clippers. But after 3.5 fruitless seasons, he wanted to win.

It turns out he’d look for that winning in a familiar place, waiving his no-trade clause to end up back in Toronto.

The Clippers sent Kawhi (SF, 95 ovr) to Toronto and Ingram (SF, 88 ovr), Harrell (C, 82 ovr), and Ennis (SF, 78 ovr) to New York in exchange for 6 players and 5 first round draft picks.

The 5 consecutive first rounders were the biggest part of the trade, but OG Anunoby (SF, 83 ovr), Marquis Huffman (PG, 78 ovr), and Zakee Roberson (C, 80 ovr) are all young and talented enough to be contributors on a good team in the future.

Similar to Ennis, Hassan Whiteside (C, 84 ovr), Dennis Smith Jr (PG, 76 ovr), and Luke Kennard (SG, 81 ovr) are all salary and roster-space fillers for the purpose of this trade. They may get playing time this year, but are likely not part of the long term plan in Los Angeles.

The 5 picks will help to make up for the pick swap the Clippers have with the Thunder this year, robbing them of a chance to get a top player in next year’s draft.

After the big trade, the Knicks desperately needed help at point guard, and send DeAndre Jordan (C, 84 ovr) and his expiring deal (and some picks) to the Kings for Ricky Rubio (PG, 80 ovr).

      Lineups
Here are the lineups for the Raptors, Knicks, and Clippers after this trade:

*The Knicks will have Bogdan Bogdanovic at the two once he returns from his broken nose this month.

Wow that is a massive tear down by the Clippers in legit one singular trade. Be interesting to see if those picks become anything.

Yeah, it was massive and took a long time to get all the contracts to work out. I had to waive a few players to get the roster sizes right as well.

Not sure if the trade makes a ton of sense for the Knicks, but they haven't had a star of any kind since Melo and then Linsanity, and that's a stretch. Maybe Ingram can be that for them. Giving up on Huffman is tough though, he's been great.

You've also inspired me to track how all these assets turn out for the Clippers. Making a spreadsheet now

I agree. It was hard to find something that really made sense, but I thought this one fit well and the Raptors had enough assets to make it work.

College Hoops Tonight January 2, 2023

The last game recap got a little long, so I separated out College Hoops Tonight for you all to enjoy.

There were 2 big games in the last week:
              • Oregon beat USC to stay undefeated (and give the Trojans their first loss), moving up to #5. The Ducks managed to get NBA prospects Devonne Shakur (PG, 88 ovr) and Raynell Ere (C, 84 ovr) into foul trouble and snuck away with the 2-point win.
              • #3 Michigan State gave Ohio State their second loss, knocking the Buckeyes down to #8 (from #4). C.W. Wente (PG, 88 ovr) had 25 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and just 1 turnover in 38 minutes as MSU won 89-81.

What a trade, feels very believable, nice work. Shocked the Clips couldn't win with Kawhi and BI. That seems like a good haul of young players, do any of them have superstar upside or are they just good players?

Thanks! It was tough to pull off but I am happy with it as well. In terms of potential, I will need to check when I am back home. However, Huffman could be an All-Star (if I remember correctly) and Roberson could be a starter.

The Clippers have just been getting worse and the trade to get them Ingram seems like it was bad for both LA teams, but may have helped the Pelicans. Here's a Clippers history.

                  2019-2020
56-26 and the 3 seed. Made it to the second round of the playoffs.
Kawhi won DPoY and was 2nd team All-Pro, 1st team All-Defense
Paul George also made 1st team All-Defense.
Starting lineup: Beverly, George, Leonard, Mirotic, Harrell

                  2020-2021
58-24 and the 1 seed. Made it to second round and lost to eventual champions Golden State.
Kawhi won DPoY and was 2nd team All-Pro, 1st team All-Defense
Paul George also made 1st team All-Defense.
Starting lineup: Schroder, George, Leonard, Marcus Morris, Harrell

                  2021-2022
                  40-42 and missed the playoffs.
                  Kawhi was 3rd team All-NBA, 1st team All-Defense.
They started 27-25 (9th place) and made the trade for Brandon Ingram at that point. Things didn't go well after the trade...but they still stayed in 9th place at season end, despite being awful.
Lineup: Schroder, ???, Leonard, Ingram, Harrell

                  2022-2023
Doc Rivers left for LA Lakers. Hired LA's assistant.
9-16 when Harrell demanded more. Unsure of record at time of trade (not at home).
Lineup pre-trade: Schroder, Sexton, Ingram, Leonard, Harrell

January 6, 2023 Stetson vs Jacksonville [Atlantic Sun]

After 5 straight losses, Oggy was desperate for something good. He definitely got it while visiting Kennesaw State, but it came with a catch. The Hatters went to Kennesaw, GA and thrashed the Owls, winning 85-45 and holding the home team to only 16 second half points. It was a huge cathartic victory and it was led by the frontcourt: Jerimie Scott had 22 points and Deron Wagner had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

However, it came at a cost. Just a few minutes into the second half Arnaud Dahi had his leg rolled on and limped off in pain. The starting point guard will miss the next three weeks due to a strained achilles. Fortunately, Marko Nevill can fill in, but the Hatters seemingly can’t catch a break when it comes to their health.

Their next game is against Jacksonville University. The Jacksonville Dolphins are 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference, and they play a fast-paced, hectic game. On offense, they like to get the ball in the paint and then fall back into a high pressure 1-3-1 defense on the other end. They feature several very dangerous players who were on their NCAA tournament at-large bid team last year:
                        • Senior Jacob Amerson (PG, 71 ovr) leads the team with 12.3 points per game.
                        • Last season’s conference freshman of the year Homer Nelke (C, 70 ovr).
                        • The recruit that spurned Oggy for Jacksonville, sophomore Clarence Bowen (C, 67 ovr).
                        • Plus senior Rashay O’Bannon (SG, 77 ovr) who transferred in from Alabama and is at his best when attacking the basket off the dribble.

This is one game where the Hatters likely won’t have a height or athleticism advantage and will need to play smart basketball and feed off of the home crowd.

The first few minutes of the game were quite sloppy, but somehow the Hatters found themselves up 8-2 thanks to four baskets in the paint from their bigs. That theme continued on as Deron Wagner scored 11 of Stetson’s first 17 points as they built up a 5 point lead.

At the midway point of the half, the tempo had picked up and the game was 22-19, but then Stetson went cold and struggled to score for several minutes, allowing Jacksonville to build up a 3 point lead and then extend it to as big as 5. However, the Hatters settled down and started playing very good defense, even if their offense was struggling to score.

Right before half, Marko Nevill stole the ball and that led to a Stetson bucket, giving them a 32-30 lead over the Dolphins at halftime. By every statistical view, this was an even game and even matchup and has made for great viewing. Amerson and Black both had 10 points for the visitors, while Deron Wagner led all scorers with 14, drawing several fouls.

It was a close and tough game, but the Hatters were feeling it and enjoying themselves.

Early in the second half, some great defense, fouls drawn by Wagner, and a three from Lennox Evertsen resulted in an 11 point (45-34) lead for the Hatters. That big of a lead plus both Nelke and Brown being forced into foul trouble should have easily sealed the game for the Hatters. However, Jacksonville rallied back, mostly thanks to Amerson’s dynamic play on offense. In the end, it was not enough as the home team won 68-62.

The number of fouls were probably the difference in the game, as Jacksonville committed 16 to Stetson’s 8. This resulted in Stetson taking 30 free throws, 23 more than Jacksonville. The Dolphins were also inefficient from three, making 8 of 26 (30.8%).

Deron Wagner led all players with 23 points, shooting 13-17 from the charity stripe and adding 6 rebounds. Lennox Evertsen and Brendon Pocius combined for 30 points as well.

Homer Nelke and Clarence Bown were non-factors for Jacksonville, combining for 2 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block. O’Bannon was fine (11 points), but it was Amerson and Black who combined for 38 points on 14-23 shooting to keep the Dolphins in the game.

The Hatters haven't finished a game with all ideal starters players healthy in 6+ weeks. It's been rough.

But they've treaded water and Wagner is a big part of that. In this game he was an offensive force by drawing fouls, but he's also leading the Atlantic Sun in blocked shots, which is really helpful.

January 6, 2023 St. Francis vs Monmouth [NEC]

Both brothers saw their freshman point guard leave the game with a strained achilles on January 1, which was a rough way to start 2023. St. Francis’ Tanoris Houston will be out for 2.5 weeks after experiencing the same injury as Stetson’s Arnaud Dahi. Unfortunately for Dinko, this injury also came in a loss against Quinnipiac as the Red Flash fell 77-57 due to Issa Matela’s 32 points for the home team. Tanoris Houston was only in the game for 6 minutes before he was injured.

At 3-1, the Red Flash are tied for first in the conference with Mount St. Mary’s and Fairleigh Dickinson, while Monmouth sits at 1-2 in the conference, but 7-8 overall. The Hawks are not especially talented but have a top 7 that would be in the rotation for every team in the NEC, but things drop off after that. In their top 7 they have 7’2” sophomore Jay Challed (C, 67 ovr) who is scoring 10 ppg and their only good shooter: P.J. Pjevcevic (PG, 67 ovr). This team is scrappy and could win any NEC game through hard work, but Dinko and team should be winning this game with relative ease, especially at home.

The Hawks started off miserably, as they shot 1-5 from the field and 0-3 from the FT line through three minutes.
This theme continued, as the Hawks couldn’t make a shot at the halfway point of the 1st half. They were 1-12 from the field and losing 18-2. The Red Flash weren’t especially efficient, but the Hawks were playing terribly, especially on offense. The Red Flash were letting them take shots at will, but most JV high school teams would shoot better than Monmouth.

Monmouth finally started to play like a college team, passing the ball, getting to the basket, and grabbing rebounds to cut the game to 22-13.

At halftime, the score was 33-21 with the Hawks winning the latter half of the frame 19-15 to keep it somewhat respectable. Vern Quick 13 points thanks to his sharpshooting from deep.

The Hawks fell asleep again as the second half started as Stetson went on a 9-0 run to double up Monmouth 42-21. This led to a 66-46 final score as St. Francis coasted, putting in backups and even trying out a 1-3-1 zone. This is a bad Monmouth team and there wasn’t much to be gleaned from this victory.

Vern Quick had 21 points and was 5-11 from three to lead all scorers. His performance was a stark contrast to Monmouth’s, who shot 2-21 (9.5%) from deep and had two starters (SG Cotton and SF Falu) combined to shoot 0-15 from the field (0-11 from three).

Despite the victory, Dinko was quite concerned with the fact that Monmouth grabbed 14 offensive rebounds – that was not a good sign for the Red Flash.

                              • Both brothers played on Saturday, January 8, 2 days after their previous games.
                                • Oggy and Stetson invited Lipscomb to town. The Bison were 11-4 (3-0 in conference) and finally a respectable team. They managed to beat the Hatters 67-63 and forced Brendon Pocius to foul out, though he led the hatters with 17 points on 5-6 shooting.
                                • The Red Flash played a thrilling overtime game against NEC-leading Fairleigh Dickinson, seeing the Knights win on the road, 107-103 after the game was tied at 95 at the end of regulation. Vern Quick scored 32 points, but both Gerardo Bethel and Stephane Diakite fouled out, which is problematic with both Tanoris Houston and Willis Holman out injured. The Red Flash had 36 total fouls in the game, allowing the Knights to shoot 48 free throws.

                              • Iowa beat #5 Michigan State 74-66 and #24 Illinois 42-41, but managed to fall in the polls from 13-20 just because they lost to unranked Indiana as well. The voters are drunk.

                              Around the NBA
                              • John Wall (PG, 83 ovr) turned back the clock and dropped 42 on the Magic as the Heat won 123-108.
                              • After their awful start the Celtics are now 20-17 and Damian Lillard (PG, 90 ovr) has scored 40+ four times this season, including the recent game against the Pacers, where he dropped 43 and outdueled former Celtics Kemba Walker (PG, 88 ovr).
                              • Trevor Merchant went off against the Pelicans, shooting 8-9 from three, 16-21 overall, and scoring 42 points in only 30 minutes before he fouled out. The Pistons won by 28.
                              • Immediately after the mega trade, the Knicks and Raptors faced off in Toronto. Brandon Ingram started off hot, but it was Pascal Siakam (PF, 90 ovr) who stole the show with 19 first quarter points (and 35 for the game) and helped spur the Raptors to a dominant win, 121-103. If this first game is any indication, he’s going to love having Kawhi back in town.
                              • The trade must have set something off in the Clippers, who faced the second place Grizzlies without their three leaders. It wasn’t a problem though as they outscored the visitors 50-19 in the second quarter an had 9 players score in double digits en route to a 161-110 win.

A great night shooting the ball, and I'd say an even better job on defense.
