Tovarich: It had been a while but it was nice to get a reminder of those types of games where you have to be +11 in turnovers and +15 in shots to eek out a 3-point win. At least we somehow won though.

Reporter: How big were Tamayo and Rakiecki late?

Tovarich: All those 3's were huge. We got down 6 there somehow and we hit 4/5 3's there late, and somehow they missed the tying one with 7 seconds to go and then couldn't get the ball back because they had too many fouls to give, which I always love.

Reporter: This is the least the bench has played, probably during your entire tenure.

Tovarich: Yeah, they were popping timeouts like Mentos so we were fresh.

Reporter: You seem disturbed after wins if you don't like how you won, why

Tovarich: Having to press a weaker team and force 15 turnovers to stop them from shooting 65% is ridiculous. Our FG% defensive is definitely improved from last year, where seemingly everyone shot around 60%, but allowing 65% is highly frustrating and knowing that you NEED to be +11 in turnovers and +15 in shots or you'll lose is no fun.

Tovarich: Not quite as extreme as last game, but another game where we needed to be +9 in turnovers and +4 in shots to eek it out there at the end. The steal by Stivers with about 45 seconds to go was enormous. The offensive rebound by Shehan with about 8 seconds to go was even bigger. That putback before they could intentionally foul us was the clincher.

Reporter: What were you thinking when they went from down 6 to up 8 after halftime?

Tovarich: I was thinking LSU came out. We should probably beat LSU too though. Previous teams, we'd likely have lost that game with all the things that went wrong after halftime, but this team's so good they managed to overcome it. We'd likely not have been able to bounce back from them making 8 shots in a row, or where they pressed and we should have had layups and all 5 of them got blocked without a foul even though we were called for 5 fouls in less than 5 minutes.

Reporter: Just 14 attempts from 3 and the overwhelming majority of shots were in the paint, what went into that?

Tovarich: We had a pretty glaring size advantage, although don't tell that to their incredible blocking defense and rebounding advantage. It seemed obvious quickly that the 3's weren't really falling, and even though we managed to miss half our shots in the paint or get them miraculously blocked 2 on 1, it seemed like the best plan. Shehan and Petrauskas were great.

Reporter: Will we see more of that in the future then?

Tovarich: Maybe, I don't know. If it's working and the outside shooting is not, then we'll see. Hopefully it's a sign they're improving.

Reporter: Rumors are Magley is unhappy.

Tovarich: Yeah, there aren't enough minutes for all 12 guys. We get him in when we can. These nailbiters are not the place though. Petrauskas is getting unhappy too, but I mostly just find that annoying. I understand he started as a FR and I know from my time at Eastern Shore that people who start one year and don't the next are unhappy, but he should not expect to start as a walkon. I've got another great walkon C RS'ing, so I'd survive without them, but in an ideal world, they'd accept their role and they'll pile up a lot of wins here.

Reporter: Should you be ranked now?

Tovarich: I'm not sure how close we are, but if 15-1 and an RPI in the top 20 doesn't do it, then I don't know what will because obviously our best competition is behind us.

Tovarich: Not sure how we pulled that out. Seemed like everything was going against us. The rebounding disparity was laughable. The bigs were a far cry from their game before this. The 3's weren't falling much. Didn't beat that team either time last season, so not sure what it is about them, but they seem to know something.

Reporter: Is it their unusual half-court trap?

Tovarich: That's marginally annoying the way you're trying to take the ball just past half-court and your guys act like they're bouncing off a wall backward, but it doesn't really cause many turnovers. There was the one bizarre 5-second call, but I'd hardly call him closely guarded. They didn't really steal any of our passes out of the trap. After that, we get into a regular half-court offense and we just missed a lot of shots. I'd like to give them credit, but they didn't have much to do with it.

Reporter: Tamayo was 1-12 on 3's, but hit a big one at the end. What gives you confidence in him even on a bad night?

Tovarich: He's the primary shooting option every possession almost. I've seen him start 0-10 or so and he almost always finds it. He was open, so I want him to take it. He hit a clutch 3 and they surprisingly missed theirs late, and then got the customary offensive rebound that it seemed like they got on every possession and I was stunned they didn't tie it on the putback. We probably should've had about 4.5 seconds with the ball in a tie game. Got a bit lucky most likely.

Reporter: Did getting into the top 25 cause any kind of letdown?

Tovarich: I doubt it. But we'll need a better performance next game. Just seems to be some matchup issue with South Alabama. We'll see them last game before the tournament, which they also host, so we'll come up with something new for them then I guess.

Tovarich: Well, I'd say we're slumping, but we keep squeaking them out somehow. It felt like everything was going against us again in the second half, but this team's just so good, they find a way to get through it.

Reporter: Do you think the bench should have had more minutes since they were doing so well and the starters were struggling?

Tovarich: Yeah, maybe. Frazier and Marshall obviously were huge. When you're front court shoots 5/31, it's easy to say that you should do something else. Tamayo did finally hit one big three there in the second half.

Reporter: What went into the decision to kill so much clock in the second half?

Tovarich: Well, patterns emerged. We'd be up 2 scores, and I think they scored 99% of the time they were down 2 scores. We stumbled out way into a steal there and it was immediately stolen back somehow. Then we'd score most of the time to go back up 2 scores and repeat the whole thing over. So as long as that obvious pattern was holding, which it did until the very end when they missed a desperation 3 and started sending us to the line, it seemed best to run the clock down so they'd perhaps never have time to go ahead or tie.

Reporter: What can you do to break patterns like that?

Tovarich: In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm usually sarcastically referring to things that are beyond our control. Predictable things you can see coming before they happen, and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Reporter: You've had 4 nailbiters in a row against competition that are often less talented than some of your OOC opponents. Why do you think that is?

Tovarich: I learned last year, that's just how conference games are. We were the best team on paper last year, and we barely won the regular season championship on the last day of the season with 5 losses. So far, we're avoiding defeat in games we'd have lost last year, but we'll drop a couple eventually. I don't know if it's familiarity or what, but some of these lowly rated teams put forth Herculean efforts against us.

Tovarich: I assume we'll end up losing one of these eventually. Another game where I have no idea how we came back from everything going against us in the second half.

Reporter: Do you think sticking with your cold shooters won the game again?

Tovarich: That's one of the things. Rakiecki was 0-2 until he hit the last two late. Tamayo was 0-7 on 3's until he finally hit one late. It was another game of terrible shooting. It's a little aggravating to have to beat inferior teams at home while being +9 in turnovers and +8 in shots just to eek it out at the end.

Reporter: Speaking of the end, what made you intentionally foul late?

Tovarich: Based on their incredible shooting in the second half, I assume they'd make a 3 and beat us, so we had fouls to give, so we used them and made them inbound the ball. We were able to steal that 3rd one and run out the clock.

Reporter: Why do you think everyone can seem to struggle simultaneously?

Tovarich: The basketball gods decided that's how it would be. I know were started 1/13 on 3's, so finishing 4/7 was tremendous progress for us, but I'd seen enough missed layups. Big guys, little guys, whoever. It's a freaking layup. They were barely contested, and we'd miss. It's something a middle school kid should execute.

Reporter: How about Petrauskas hitting a 3?

Tovarich: I don't know what he was doing over there, but Capel was driving it in and saw the D collapse so he kicked it out, probably just assuming it was someone who's supposed to be there. He's shockingly 2/3 in his career. But we'll try to keep it that way, total accident.

Reporter: Next up is Little Rock. Can you keep their walkon center from getting 26 rebounds again?

Tovarich: I've seen nothing from us that encourages me to think we'll do better. That guy averaged 5 boards a game for the season, and that's with 26 against us, which basically averages his entire season by 1 almost. We get outrebounded by everyone, so he likely is perfectly capable of doing that to us again, especially when the entire roster apparently forgets how to shoot.

Tovarich: It was nice to have a comfortable win for once. The backups let them make it look closer than it was. Thank goodness for Tamayo. No one else seemed to do much.

Reporter: How do you feel you did on their walkon C?

Tovarich: Well, instead of 26 rebounds this year, he had a very pedestrian 7. He scores 8 of those 12 points in the first few minutes, so I was expecting him to score 26 points this time, but he finally started to miss some after that. I guess he's human after all. It was hard to tell last year.

Reporter: Did you think about leaving Tamayo out there longer to go for some records?

Tovarich: I did. But I'd like to get some unhappy people some minutes in blowouts too. He's only a SO. He'll have other nights like that.

Reporter: Little Rock still shot very well, despite never seeming to be in it in the second half.

Tovarich: Yeah, they were good on offense and we left Danelius open way too many times. I told people to play tight on him, it didn't seem like they listened, just like I instruct them all to crash the boards harder and they don't seem to either (shrugs)

Oops, just forgot. Although the poll jumping was crazy last week, wouldn't stun me.

Tovarich: Nice to have another easy win. 4-14 teams don't often seem to play like 4-14 teams, but this one did for once. Too bad we only get to play them once this season, we've had 3 easy games with them. I'd like more of them and less South Alabama.

Reporter: You always say you don't shoot at the end of the game if the shot clock is off, unless it's Denver and you're getting payback, but you scored with 10 seconds left tonight.

Tovarich: The people wanted nachos. How unopopular would I be if I denied them nachos?

Reporter: Don't you worry about payback yourself?

Tovarich: Not from them. They can try if they want, but right now they're not even going to make the Sun Belt tournament, so I find it unlikely we'll see them again this season.

                        Reporter: What about next season?

Tovarich: That might be someone else's problem, who know?

                        Reporter:

Tovarich: Before you even start, don't take that as an invitation to ask about whether I'll be here or not next year.

Reporter: Are you worried about back to back scoreless games by Stivers?

Tovarich: No. He only took 2 shots tonight and 1 in the last game. He had a rough night against the Florida schools. 4/19? That would worry me. But my PG position has never been about scoring. I know he's a great shooter, even if he's struggling this year like everyone else on the team not named Frazier, but missing 3 shots in 2 games isn't a big deal. Even if he has another 2-9, 2-10 game like he did last week, I'd let him keep shooting just like I let Rakiecki and Tamayo.

Tovarich: Rough night for them. They were turnover machines, press or not. Felt kinda bad for them. Lots of minutes for the bench. Good night.

Reporter: Why did you start pressing?

Tovarich: We were only ahead 16-14, and I wanted to put a little pressure on them. It went off the rails quickly for them. I didn't press in the second half at all, obviously was unnecessary. The press was only about half the turnovers. They were turning it over in transition as well trying to hurry on offense and make long passes when they got defensive rebounds.

Reporter: Ryan is now also unhappy, along with Magley. Thoughts?

Tovarich: Honestly, I'm ok if Ryan would like to leave the team in the offseason. I'll keep him around next year if he wants to stay because he's a SR and I can't use his scholarship yet anyway, but there'll be even fewer minutes for him next year and I'll probably pass out some redshirts next year because we'll be crazy deep. I'd prefer Magley stay, but he'll be the 3rd C next year at best, so minutes won't be easy to come by for him either. I don't know if either will transfer. Ryan can RS and still be a SR somewhere. We used Magley's RS last year, so he can't play elsewhere until someone invents a transfter portal where you don't have to sit out a year.
