Tovarich: Unfortunately we didn't have the ball as time expired so I could draw something up for us. It was nice to have such an easy opponent that we could get everyone in the scoring column and get all 5 starters in double digits and get some good minutes for the backups to practice against.

Reporter: Do you feel bad about full court pressing them the entire game and embarrassing them like that?

Tovarich: I'll sleep just fine tonight. And I didn't press the entire game. We didn't press after the first basket. I gave the instruction after that though. We also didn't the first basket of the second half. Then I put it back on. Don't exaggerate.

    Reporter: What about their players?

Tovarich: They shouldn't have signed on with a clown coach.

Reporter: Tracy Wolfson said you didn't feel it would be classy to run up the score.

Tovarich: She's lying. She makes up more quotes than Charissa Thompson.

Reporter: So what about Purdue coming up next? Were you worried anyone might look ahead to them or were you pounding your hatred of Denver into their heads so much that they forgot Purdue was next?

Tovarich: I just looked at their record and they're going to kill our SOS. I wish we could cancel that one. I just hope we're not looking ahead to Arkansas State, Troy and Little Rock while we're playing that one. They're 45-16 and we play all three in six days.

Tovarich: I see why they're having a rough season. We got a few of them in foul trouble early and they had to go to the bench. You'd think the one SR they start at PG would know better.

Reporter: Fran McCaffrey didn't like the FT disparity. What did you think?

Tovarich: Fouls were 12-6, theirs almost all just happened to be shooting fouls, which we can almost never finish, so they got their money's worth on their fouls. We were hit with some ticky tack reach ins and such. They weren't as aggressive, so that's on him. He's just an angry person, so not surprised he's upset about something.

Reporter: Why do you think you feel from 13 to 15 in the polls after last week

Tovarich: Denver hurt our strength of schedule. In a way, we're unlucky to only get them once this season, because they're such an easy win, but they would kill our RPI too.

Reporter: You were worried about the team looking ahead to the big conference games. Is that really possible against a power school, regardless of their record?

Tovarich: You never know in basketball. On paper, they'd only be about the 4th best team in the Sun Belt, but we've had some incredible performances by some not so incredible teams. You have to take everyone seriously, except Denver. That's just for fun.

Reporter: The initial RPI has you 14th. Do you think that's accurate?

Tovarich: We tried to put a tough schedule together to make up for the conference only being rated 10th overall. Except for Purdue, all the power schools we played are over .500. Looks like only Illinois up at 9 is ranked, but the rankings don't come out until after the schedule is made, so there's a bit of guesswork involved, and you get in some tournament where you think you might play someone good.

Tovarich: Incredible 3 by Tamayo to win it with .9 to go. Another one that's hard to explain how we won. We couldn't shoot, we couldn't rebound. They were getting most of the calls it felt like. They were up 7 a couple times, and I was thinking it wasn't our night.

Reporter: Tamayo was 2-9 on 3's prior to the last, what gave you the confidence to let him shoot it still with the game on the line?

Tovarich: They went up with 4.9 to go, so there was no plan, just get the ball up the court. He was pretty well defended, just an incredible shot.

Reporter: Both teams struggled from 3, did you consider giving up on trying them?

Tovarich: We were 1/11 at halftime, so I figured it can't get worse in the second half than that, so we kept going with our normal amount. They couldn't hit any either. Normally it would be more, but they were in their man press most of the first half, so that sped the game up and we tried to get some transition buckets, but we shot terribly in the paint. A good 7 or so point blank misses that would have made that a lot more comfortable game.

Reporter: You gave the backups a lot of minutes in the second half even though it was such a tight game. What went into that?

Tovarich: The starters just weren't playing well, and I had a feeling the backups were going to get it done. They were more effective with the press for whatever reason there the last few minutes and got a few critical steals.

Reporter: @ Troy next, is that a revenge game like Denver?

Tovarich: That's the toughest game on the conference schedule for sure. They give us trouble a lot. They blew us out in the championship game last year, but it's nothing like Denver. That one's personal. They just played better than us last year, and it'll be a tough one to win the only regular season game at their place.

Tovarich: Well, that's not how we typically go about things, but Troy dictated most of the game with the full court press. We'll take it. That's never an easy game for us.

Reporter: How important was it to get their big guys in foul trouble early?

Tovarich: Even with them sitting out most of the game, we tied in rebounds, so who knows how bad that would've been if we didn't.

Reporter: Do you feel like them going small even helped?

Tovarich: Not really. They shot so well in the 1st half that they were up anyway.

Reporter: You don't like to sit people in foul trouble, what do you think of everyone else?

Tovarich: They all must use the same analytics company, gosh. 2 fouls and EVERYONE sits them until halftime, no exceptions. Then it seems like they won't go back in with a 3rd until there's under 5 minutes left. I must be the only coach in America who doesn't subscribe to that philosophy.

Reporter: Why is Riley so good at breaking the press?

Tovarich: Having his kind of speed at the PF position makes it easy. Whoever is guarding him simply can't keep up and so he can drive it on a center who's trying to decide if he's going to stick to ours or come over and often be late to try and defend, which lead to some clumsy fouls today. They were relentless with the press, and that puts their big guys on an island to guard ours and they start 4 seniors, so you'd think they are experienced enough to be smart in that situation, and obviously whoever coaches Troy trusts them to do that, but we were determined to get it down there and force them to try no to foul us. We'll miss his speed next year, because Pawlak can't break it like Riley can, because he doesn't have the speed to get by his defender and life against the press will likely take a different strategy next season.

Reporter: Only 12 3's. Will you try and take 20 extra next game to make up for it?

Tovarich: I felt like we never got into our half court offense in the first half because of the press and the fact that they shot almost 60% so yeah, just 4 attempts at halftime is probably a record low. But even when we were in a half court set, they were missing their two big guys and threw a SF out there down low, so it was most sensible to take advantage of that, as much as it pained me inside.

Reporter: They were 50% on 3's and almost 60% overall in the first half, what was the plan in the second half?

Tovarich: Dare them to do it again. And it was baffling they didn't give the one guy more attempts. He was 5/5 on 3's at halftime and they should have let him keep shooting. Eventually they stopped pressing us, and so I felt like that was the time to turn it back on them but they weren't as aggressive driving it in, and would prefer to set up their half court offense, so there was nothing stopping them strategically from doing it all over again. Must have been bad coaching on their part.

Studbucket: Where did Arkansas State rank in your most dramatic wins?

Tovarich: Probably top 5. I think my two most dramatic ones were at Eastern Shore, getting a block in the conference championship game is definitely the best, because it was some rare defense on our part. We had a dramatic double OT game there. I remember one of our big guys driving the baseline on someone back in my first or second season here and laying one in at the buzzer to win a frustrating game, so maybe 4th or so.

Tovarich: Big to go 3-0 this week. Those three all have good records, they're all very experienced teams. The next one against Middle Tennessee is important too, but other than a trip to FIU, it's not a tough road down the stretch, those were the big ones.

Reporter: Both teams shot so well in the first half, why do you think that didn't carry over after halftime?

Tovarich: I don't know why it didn't, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't. 68% for us and 62% for them I think in the first half. My gut said that wouldn't last, so I figured we better slow it down and if we're both going to shoot under 50%, I better limit possessions a little, so we bled the clock a little until they sped it up with the press late. Capel was sloppy with the ball late, 3 turnovers doesn't make me happy, but luckily we had a good lead.

Reporter: You often single out one or two players on the opposite team to try and close down on in the second half, how hard is that when 4 guys are in double digits?

Tovarich: Exactly, everyone was shooting well. The center probably would've made it 5/5 on double digits if he could play more minutes but he had the foul trouble and apparently the chart told them to sit him for a bit, not that it made any difference. Even the guys we tried to get tight on, they kept beating us in too. Their scoring was too balanced. They have 3 SR's too, so they've got a lot of talent and experience.

Reporter: Did Jack make a case for getting more minutes tonight? He beat the press well and got to the line and did the kind of things Riley does against the press.

Tovarich: He definitely has a little more speed than Pawlak, so maybe in that scenario, I'd give the edge to him. They're very even in skills and that'll be a battle next year for starting. For now though, we need a comfortable lead for him to get in. Obviously we're set at PG and C, but the other 3 positions to start next year are wide open with the existing players and some FR.

Reporter: Can you keep up the quality of a play for a fourth straight game. You just played three quality teams in a week, and you've circled Middle Tennessee as a revenge game since they beat you last month.

Tovarich: We will be relentless. It may not rise to the level of vitriol I have for Denver, but maybe Middle Tennessee just needs a reminder of who is better despite the first result. They're also right in line for the 8/9 game which means they get us a 3rd time in Mobile and it would be nice if they're not so confident.

Tovarich: That was a nice scrimmage there. I think the starters broke a little sweat, not sure. Nice light practice out there in the second half, really gave me some time to evaluate some potential starters for next year without having to worry about the game.

Reporter: When you said you would be relentless, we assumed a game like Denver that involved a full court press the entirety of the game to embarrass them. You barely ever pressed at all.

Tovarich: I merely implied that. It just sounded like a nice thing to say. We got up 23-13 early and every time they made a little mini run to get it down to 4 or so, we'd usually respond, so there was little need.

Reporter: What adjustments did you make on Ford at halftime?

Tovarich: He was pretty much the only discussion at the half. He was destroying us. We doubled him when he got the ball, but he still got in there and scored, dominated the boards. Luckily we started on that 22-2 run, and everyone not named Ford couldn't hit a shot for some reason, so he ended up getting some putbacks later, but they mostly jacked 3's for the second half and he kind of became irrelevant for that reason.

Reporter: How many shots were you going to let Blankenship take to get in the scoring column like everyone else?

Tovarich: As many as it took. We comfortably lead by 20+ the entire second half, so it was ok that he started 0-5.

Reporter: How is recruiting your final scholarship going?

Tovarich: Well, since we had 3 games last week, there was no time to recruit, which is really annoying, but we're still in good shape on our PF. I have no plan B there, so we'll just roll that scholarship over if he ends up bailing on us.

Tovarich: I think they might rename Boca Raton Rossville if that true FR average 10 per game keeps shooting 75% and going for 29 against top 10 teams. Luckily no one else could do anything. I've never gone full blown double team someone every time they touch the ball anywhere on the court, but I was getting close. Getting everyone some points for the 3rd game in a row is always nice.

Reporter: Riley usually doesn't contribute much on offense except when he needs to break the press. How did his involvement in the offense come about?

Tovarich: Tamayo was cold from 3, so I hoped the scoring in the paint would come easier. Both big guys were tremendous on the boards and scoring. The refs weren't really calling anything on anyone, so I'm surprised they didn't get more physical. Both guys got some putbacks on rebounds, which is unusual for us.

Reporter: You looked annoyed at Capel again and subbed the starters back in late.

Tovarich: He gets very sloppy against the press for some reason, so yeah, a couple turnovers irked me and the lead was down to 14, so I subbed them back in. He needs to be better at handling the ball. He's lucky it's only against the press and it usually means we're way ahead. There won't be a 3rd PG on the team next year, so it's still his show, but I definitely need to recruit one next year.

Reporter: Even before their quick shooting at the end that lead to some rebounds, did you feel rebounding was going well?

Tovarich: Undoubtedly we inflated that a tad there, because they couldn't even get anyone in the paint to try and rebound before they were firing off shots, but Suotamo had 9 at halftime, so we were doing well before that. I don't know why. The big guys were awesome tonight. Glad someone was, because Tamayo was not his usual scoring self tonight

Tovarich: They were incredible tonight. Shot amazing, rebounded more of their misses than they didn't. We had no chance.

Reporter: What can you do to defend a team shooting 60% for an entire game?

Tovarich: We tried to get tighter on the shooters, but it didn't matter. They'd have rebounded any misses.

Reporter: Why did it feel like they had way more blocks than just 3?

Tovarich: Yeah, 3 is harsh by the statekeeper. It felt like 10, and we missed all sort of point blank layups when they didn't block it. I think we never got much closer than 10. I think they shot 100% after we got it to single digits.

Reporter: You could have clinched the regular season tonight, is it frustrating not to?

Tovarich: We'll just clinch it next week. We're up a game and a half on them still. One clinches a tie and we just have to win our last two and that banner that already got delivered can go up.

Tovarich: That might be the worst played game ever by a team who won somehow. The ineptitude was extensive. I question whether the refs measured the basket we were shooting at. I think it was 10'1". It seems improbable but I think at least 6 shots managed to land on the rim from 1 foot away and fall backwards off the rim. I thought we were inept in the paint last game. This was far worse. The refs felt like they were against us. We couldn't make a free throw anyway. Tamayo 0-13 is incredible. Pawlak 04 on FT's is incredible. Their interior defense was incredible. It was a mosh pit down low and the refs felt almost pre-determined that they were just going to let North Texas do whatever they wanted down low. 2 fouls in the first half and again, only 5 blocks is rough statkeeping. It felt like 10. Our rebounding was inept. Their C is a much less heralded FR than mine and he more offensive rebounds in 5 minutes than ours had the entirety of his minutes.

Reporter: Have you ever benched your entire starting 5 before like that in the second half?

Tovarich: Of course not, but good grief, it was a tragic comedy watching them. The big guys managed to score a little, and they probably didn't deserve to get yanked, but for some reason, I just felt the backups were gonna shoot us out of it, and they did. Li hit some big 3's. Lewis hit the go-ahead 3 with like 8 seconds to go and we managed to get a great steal on their long pass and then shocker, I sub Stivers back in because he's great at FT's and he missed but luckily there was only 1 second left, not that it stopped their FR C from hitting the rim from 85 feet away, which I'd have just laughed and clapped if it went in because it felt like the only way that game could've ended.

Reporter: You've clinched a share of the Sun Belt, does that make it gratifying?

Tovarich: Not really. I know we'll win the conference and be the 1 seed. It's more gratifying to have a team that played their D- game and still won a road game. I assume that was their senior day, I don't know. The game was a street fight, and I'm not sure how many of our guys know anything about that, but we won a game we had no business winning.

Tovarich: Great night all around. Started all 4 seniors on senior night, even Petrauskas the walkon. We got everyone a basket. We got all the seniors in double digits, Petrauskas had a double-double. He's a great walkon and I don't know how he ended up here, but he's been awesome for 4 years. +14 in rebounds might be a record for my career. Tamayo's not broken after the last game. We didn't get to the line, but we did a lot of things right.

Reporter: You only forced 4 turnovers, probably a low for your career. Was it just because the game was lopsided?

Tovarich: Yeah, there was no reason to be our usual hyper-aggressive selves on defense. Never pressed, scarcely double teamed anyone although the two guys went off for them and we probably should've tried something different on them, but I honestly wasn't paying much attention. We were just having fun getting everyone minutes and stats.

Reporter: Do you have a preference who you get in the Sun Belt tournament?

Tovarich: Denver. Oh, they're 0-17? I guess I don't like their chances. Middle Tennessee looks like they'll be in the 8/9 game. I wouldn't mind a shot at them again. Other than that, no. I expect we'll see FIU in the championship game. There seems to be a gap between them and everyone else and hopefully we can play better if we see them again.
