Tovarich: Wasn't expecting to be one of the better teams in the conference. They had a rough night shooting. We dribbled the leather off that ball on virtually every possession and we had some timely shooting to keep them at arm's length so we could continue executing the game plan.

Reporter: Still just 2 FT's and it wasn't a lack of getting the big guys the ball, is it a reputation you think you now have with the MEAC refs?

Tovarich: They'd have to answer that. A second game with just one foul called on the opposition. We were only called for 6 instead of 13 or whatever last game, but it's still frustrating. I know we don't drive it in a lot and we usually just do it to kick it back out in case the 3 isn't open already, but something does seem up.

    Reporter: Mirjacic and Moore...

Tovarich: (interrupting) are they still here?

    Reporter: That's my question.

Tovarich: They still have all those chairs down at the end to sit in. I almost did stick them in there at the last minute. But they got it down to single digits so I didn't.

    Reporter: Will they transfer?

Tovarich: I doubt that's an option for them. We're the worst team. So maybe they'll just leave the team. Should they somehow not take either of the obvious choices, I'd be stunned if they weren't released in the pre-season. I expect I'll have walkons show up who are more useful.

Reporter: Coppin State is in last place, but it's still a road game. What are you thoughts on possibly winning there?

Tovarich: They're 3-16 and yet 12 spots higher in the RPI than we are, so maybe they played a tough schedule. On paper, they're obviously better. We made 4-14 Bethune-Cookman look good. We can make them look good too.

Tovarich: Rough night for them, don't think we had anything to do with it. We're due some after winning 3 out of 4 on that road trip.

Reporter: What changed on this road trip to win 3 when you couldn't win one before?

Tovarich: Nothing. We're doing the same thing we always do. We're against more level competition in conference. We're second to last in RPI for a reason.

Reporter: You're only 2 games out of first, do you have increased expectations for where you can finish the season?

Tovarich: Not at all. Just stay out of last and make it to the postseason and wait for some new players to arrive.

Reporter: Moore and Mirjacic got to play. They've officially expressed that they are unhappy. Any changes there?

Tovarich: No, but when you're up 20 late, you might as well get them in. Don't want them getting the equivalent of bed sores from sitting on the bench the whole time.

Reporter: Recruiting by all accounts seems to be going poorly. Do you expect to end up being any better next year?

Tovarich: I don't see how it can be worse. We only have one SR. I think it's Nimocks, so all the starters will be on the roster. I think we can sign the 2 SF's. We're going for a lot of foreign guys. I hope we can get a big guy but any school can jump in at the end and would be way ahead of us. So, in short, I don't know. If we can sign an even slightly competent true C, I'd be thrilled and I think it would get better, although probably still we're not going to be much to brag about.

Tovarich: Not sure what changed at halftime. We shot 6/12 on 3's one half and 1/17 the other. The constant missed shots in the paint was frustrating. I don't get it. 12-2 FT's for the road team. It's somehow never a foul on them but always a foul on us in the paint.

Reporter: You've occasionally referred to your arena as Lytche instead of Hytche.

Tovarich: Based on our attendance, I don't think most of the fans know the name of the arena either.

Reporter: Is is frustrating to drop a home game after seemingly figuring things out on the road?

Tovarich: We're still well ahead of where I expected. It was frustrating the way it happened, not the result. I'm not surprised when we lose, more the other way around.

Reporter: Is there any explanation for why you shot so well from 3 one half and not the other? Or why you couldn't make a layup in the first half but made most in the second?

Tovarich: I can't explain the inconsistency. Seems like forces beyond my control. It never just seems to happen to one player though. It's EVERYONE somehow. It's like there's hot and cold zones on the court or something and it doesn't matter how tries to make a layup. It becomes impossible. Sometimes they're not even contested. I remain irritated people won't just slam it. These stupid cute little twirl shots from 1 foot away that end up being missed are infuriating, but no matter how many times I wish they'd just dunk it from right under the hoop, they seem to refuse for some reason.

Tovarich: I wish I'd bugged the other locker room. I'd love to know what their coach said at halftime. Must have been truly inspirational for them to shoot 70% in the second half while we continued to not be able to do anything. 11/25 in the paint is pitiful. Krleski was broken. Inexplicable.

Reporter: Maybe they have better players?

            Tovarich: Everyone does.

Reporter: You drew lots of fouls and go to the line, is that a positive?

Tovarich: I guess. We couldn't shoot from anywhere else. Not one single time someone was fouled could they finish the shot though. I don't think I can sign a quality big guy either, so I'm stuck with this for another year I think. It's embarrassing to not be able to make a layup. All the other teams can. Doesn't matter if we're playing defense or not. We can't do anything. They should just stick 5 guys around the 3-point line. We just need to feel the AC out of the vent in the rafters and we'll miss.

Reporter: Any other ranting you'd like to do?

            Tovarich: No, I'm good.

Tovarich: Oof. That was a real roller coaster. Huge to survive that. I'd have probably needed an entire bottle of whiskey tonight to get over that one if we'd lost it.

Reporter: Down 2 at the end of regulation, you chose to go for 3. Is that always your mindset as a coach?

Tovarich: Not necessarily always, but with this lack of depth it is. Tyson missed it, and we were fortunate that Nimocks was there to grab the rebound and then I almost fainted when he actually made a layup with a few tenths to spare. I'd normally just assume we'd miss that because there was someone in the same arena as him, so that usually is sufficient defense.

Reporter: How much tougher was it with Popovic fouling at in the last minute of regulation?

Tovarich: That was a lame foul call. Just totally lame. That made it tough on the big guys to have some energy as OT went on. Luckily we'd saved an extra timeout that I normally would use in regulation to get to the finish line. Had to stick a 4th guard in there for a couple minutes though.

Reporter: At the end of OT, you're up 2 and you end up fouling going for a steal, was that wise?

Tovarich: Maybe. Maybe they hit a 3 and win it. They had a guy we felt good about at the FT line and he missed, but of course, they just grabbed the rebound and put it back in to tie it.

Reporter: Just tell us about Krleski's night.

Tovarich: Insane. He started 3/3 against the zone and they never got out of it. Tyson wasn't hitting many, so I just kept telling everyone to feed him. He had a cold spell at the start of the 2nd half when they went on their big run, because apparently I suck at halftime adjustments and everyone else is amazing at them. But he found it again. Between him being on fire and all the missed shots in the paint that I had just seen enough of, I'd have let him shoot on every possession if he wanted.

Reporter: Did you notice they seem to have two guys with the same name?

Tovarich: Yeah, I guess they must be clones. I know a little about that.

Tovarich: I'd normally LOL at the other team shooting over 70% but I just roll my eyes and expect it most of the time. Still trying to solve the mystery of why every time we breathe on someone in the lane it's a foul but not the other way around. Maybe when I'm older and more experienced I'll know the big secret the rest of the conference knows.

Reporter: The big guys were making shots, why not go to them more?

Tovarich: When the other team's shooting the lights out, you gotta keep up. We traded a lot of 2's with eachother. Eventually I just accepted that defense was non-existent and we needed some 3's.

Reporter: Did you expect to be more competitive on rebounds with them?

Tovarich: Not when we miss all the shots. Defensive rebounds are easier.

Reporter: We haven't seen any zone lately. Thoughts on switching out of man?

Tovarich: If I thought leaving jump shooters on teams who shoot 70% open more was a good idea, then I'd do it.

Reporter: You have 4 in a row at home now, and because of the parity in the league, you're only 2 games ahead of last to get in the tournament, how many wins do you think you need to make the MEAC tournament?

Tovarich: I guess 2. I don't know. It's not worth thinking about it that way. Norfolk State's tied for last and we're half their wins. I just need something resembling some defense at some point. It'd be nice if we could shoot 70% some time. I guess I don't have the players for that, and it doesn't look like I will next year either.

Tovarich: Once again, apologies to everyone who fell asleep watching.

Reporter: Why do you think that strategy works against FAMU?

Tovarich: I doubt it has anything to do with the opponent. We just had a continuous 6-8 point lead for most of the game, so it seemed prudent to run the clock. They just made a pretty mediocre shooting night. We got 3-4 offensive rebounds that helped us run some more time. That 1-3-1 zone usually leaves a 3-point shooter open so that option's almost always there. Might as well wait till there's 5 seconds left instead of firing it off with 25.

Reporter: You tried some 1-2-2 zone, do you think that was partly effective?

Tovarich: I don't know. I hate how compact it is around the key and leaves the 3-point line wide open. Most teams will take advantage of that I think.

Reporter: It's the last week of in-season recruiting. Are you still pessimistic about it?

Tovarich: Extremely. I *think* we have one SF locked up. The other JC SF is going to High Point it looks like. It's going to be a struggle to sign literally anyone else the way it's looking. We're going to need a competent walk-on or two to fill in the roster. These foreign guys just have zero interest in us.

Tovarich: More apologies to those who fell asleep.

Reporter: Is this the new strategy?

Tovarich: It's really always been the strategy. The teams who press can get us into a track meet a little bit sometimes, or we're behind and can't do this, but any time we can jump up a couple possession, we'll try this.

Reporter: You've now made sure you're in the MEAC tournament, is that all that really matters?

Tovarich: Pretty much. We're just playing for seeding in that. We can aim for the top 5 to get a bye in the 1st round to maybe improve our chances but all the matchups seem pretty random, so it makes not much of a difference to me who we face, etc.

Reporter: Don't you feel that in addition to winning games, it's partly your job to entertain the fans with an exciting style of play?

Tovarich: I think if you poll the few hundred people at the game, they'd rather watch a win than a loss.

Tovarich: Thankfully they couldn't handle a little press and threw it all over the place, because their 65% shooting was incredible. Thought we were done down 8 in the second when we missed I think 8 shots in a row.

Reporter: Doesn't this tell you that you should press more?

Tovarich: When I have enough players to do that, I might, but this was just me being annoyed that they wouldn't miss, so the only way to stop a team shooting 65% is to not let them shoot. Or put them on the FT line in their case, because they couldn't make anything there. The FT disparity was pretty irritating, despite it evening out a little at the end.

Reporter: You missed every shot in the paint in the first half, what changed in the second??

Tovarich: Tremendous question. It's confounded me for my entire 28 game career so far how that happens so often. We're either useless from 3 or useless in the paint, then the second half comes and it usually magically flips. Greater forces at work beyond my understanding. I'll have to check in with Yoda about that.

Reporter: You've won 3 in a row and 4 of 5 with a loss just by 3, have you seen improvement from the players? Better strategy? What do you attribute the momentum to?

Tovarich: I have no idea. It's such a random game. One day Krleski goes for 0 and another it's 54. We've seen a lot of zone, so that's bad coaching by our opposition to leave 3 point shooters open. I still don't know why sometimes our big guys are all banned from making layups, but it happens. Continuing to just fire off 3's has typically kept us in it if we can get the right people open. I'd like to think I've given a few good pep talks now that we're heading into the postseason. We could go lose by 20 in a couple days though, so I wouldn't call it momentum, just a coincidence that a few good results happened to go consecutively.

Tovarich: LOL. I don't know where to start. That's the worst shooting I've ever seen, and it was pretty much the entire roster. Amazing how it conveniently came together that EVERYONE sucked. The rebounding was embarrassing. I think that one guy got 4 offensive rebounds in a row. There was another time it was 3 in a row. It's like they had to get it back until they scored. We would've pressed, but it helps to score to get it set up. Since we couldn't score, we couldn't really do anything. It was a real comedy out there, only no one was laughing.

Reporter: Did the opponent have anything to do with it?

Tovarich: Not even slightly. They're 6-21 and they mostly played like it. We played like an 0-28 team.

Reporter: How important is getting a bye in the first round of the MEAC?

Tovarich: I think we can get one if we win. If not, looks like we'd play possibly Norfolk State, who beat us twice. I guess it's important.

Tovarich: Good bounce back from the last nightmare of a game. We were mostly a one-man team, but that works for me.

Reporter: You still don't seem to have a plan B for games like the last when you aren't hitting 3's.

                                Tovarich: Correct.

Reporter: How do you feel heading into the conference tournament?

Tovarich: We drew Morgan State I see. I don't know how we beat them twice, but we did even though they're far better. I'm not really overly optimistic about anything. If we win, we had absolutely nothing for Winston-Salem State back when we saw them. It'll take a Herculean effort to win either game really.

Reporter: Do you have a good speech prepped?

Tovarich: I used up my pep talks on this game, we needed it after the last one. Hopefully they'll just remember this one, because I think I'm fresh out. It's the postseason, so that'll have to be motivation enough.
