Tovarich: Welcome to my favorite press conference of the season. I cut all the walkons from the roster, mostly new ones but also Bobik who played on the B team last year. A certain player I encouraged to leave decided to hold his scholarship hostage and decided to return for his SR year. I have begrudgingly left him on the roster.

Tovarich: Crenshaw will most likely be the B-team PF rather than his true C position since our transfer PF must RS. Everything else should be pretty straight forward. We'll stick to 10 players with Crosswhite probably never playing barring injury or maybe I'll let him go foul people at the end of a game somewhere. I thought starting him on SR night was a hint about what I'd like him to do.

Is the entire offense going to be feeding Hollis the ball? He seems like he'll dominate the conference.

Most likely. He is the highest rated player in the conference. I know the CPU coaches hate centers but I'm still baffled he fell to me. I was hoping for a little better 3-point shooting. My SG has the exact rating from 3 as Atako does, despite the far better overall rating and that ended up in a whopping 30.3% last year. The SF is a slight improvement, but not much. The PG is easily the best shooter from outside. It'll be tough against man to get him many open 3's but the Ohio Valley coaches love the 2-3 zone, so I might be able to shoot over that a little better.

One thing I've never figured out is how to get my PG open threes. I can do it for the wings and sometimes the 4, but if I have a good shooter at PG, I'll often put him at the 2 for spells just to get shots up. Let me know if there's something you do.

Tovarich: Oof. Freshmen. Am I right?

Reporter: Why don't you let us ask questions at the pre-season press confefence?

Tovarich: I wouldn't let you ask them now if it were up to me.

Reporter: Is starting 5 freshmen a good idea?

Tovarich: I'm not sure. Stivers is a C but he'd be perhaps an improvement over Brickens, the world's smallest PF. We'll see. These games luckily don't mean much to our postseason aspirations, especially since this game was meant to get us to start 1-0.

              Reporter: What went wrong?

Tovarich: We couldn't rebound. All their guards shot like crazy from the outside. We couldn't keep up with the outside shooting.

Reporter: When you were down 16, did you think you could come back?

Tovarich: I hadn't seen anything to think we could, but we pressed and forced some turnovers and got back to a tie, then they just got mad and made a bunch of 3's again. We missed all ours. Hopefully this was a bad game and we'll be better at it at some point.

Reporter: What's the goal in recruiting?

Tovarich: I'm still trying to figure out how I have 4 scholarships. I was expecting 2, but I guess I cut some people on scholarship last pre-season. Ideally, I'd get one each of a PG, SG, SF and a PF. We need better outside shooting. We need more size at PF probably, though I can do a bit with that this year perhaps by starting Crenshaw or Stivers. Brickens has a little more speed to help break the press though, which came in useful the first half when they were pressing us. I also expect Ravello, Gomes and Atako to be unhappy and perhaps leave at the end of the year, so I'll do like last year, fill the board with everyone I can find who's not got an offer and have lots of backup plans and just wait and see who falls through the cracks again.

Yep, I've done that lots. The SG and SF position aren't hard to get 3's. In man, they stick to the PG like glue though. If it's 2-3 zone, I can give the SG and ball and sometimes the PG will scoot over into an open spot and I can lure both the guards over to whoever has the ball. I have a lot of experimenting to do with this group.

How big is Hollis? Just trying to calibrate a 5 rebound performance.

He' 6'11" and 274. He didn't play very big against mighty Sacred Heart's 4 JR's. He got stuffed regularly and was grossly out of position on defense and on the boards.

Tovarich: I guess we're lucky we had a game to work out some things and they didn't yet.

Reporter: What did you change at halftime?

Tovarich: I put a voodoo hex on them so they'd shoot badly.

                        Reporter: But really coach?

Tovarich: Nothing. Just two bad teams playing bad basketball and their second half was extra extra bad.

Reporter: Why was Crenshaw less a part of the gameplan?

Tovarich: He stuck to PF this time since we were ahead. Last game we put him at C more because of the familiarity while we were in desperation comeback mode. You can experiment when you start the second half on a 23-2 run.

Reporter: What improvement did you see?

Tovarich: Rebounding was better obviously. Hollis played more like his size. Maybe it was just nerves for his first game last time out. Maybe it was our improving team unity. Considering we start 5 FR, you'd think it would have been zero the first time out. Not sure how that works, but it sure is important. I need more of a sample size still.

                          Tovarich: We won.

Reporter: Can you see the improvement each game so far?

Tovarich: It was a mix as it almost always will be. We shot well from the outside. That makes offense so much easier when you don't have to force it down low and can feel some confidence of some kind in an outside shot. The rebounding was nice, although a lot of that was our own misses we got back. I've probably experienced the 3 missed layups, 3 offensive rebounds and finally putback on the 4th shot, but 95% of the time, we're on the wrong side of it. I have some mixed feelings about being on the right side. It's a little embarrassing watching all the point blank misses, but we get two points in the end to make it a little less embarrassing.

Reporter: Gomes, Ravello and Atako already seem unhappy.

Tovarich: Everyone is when they start one year and don't the next. I encourage them all to transfer.

Reporter: But they started for you last year, coach.

Tovarich: George Costanza might've started for this team last year if he were on it. The rules require me to start 5 players, so we did. There's little chance of them seeing meaningful minutes ever again. It'd be best for everyone.

Reporter: Have you figured out why you have 4 scholarships yet?

Tovarich: Nope. We have 12 players on the rosters, none are walkons. The PF from Wake Forest is RS'ing because he's a transfer. Crosswhite and Stivers are SR's, so we have 10 scholarships coming back next year and that means we should have 3. I'm not sure if I won some kind of bonus scholarship from the NCAA, but it doesn't really add up.

Tovarich: We couldn't make a basket, get a rebound or stop anyone.

Reporter: Why do you think they shot a 3 with 20 seconds left when they could've run the clock out?

Tovarich: There's a lot of O'Bannon's out there, like at Murray State. Trent Johnson probably won't live long enough for me to be in a position to get him back for it though.

Tovarich: Rough start. Rough free throw shooting. That's going to be the death of me in a close game some time.

Reporter: Why did you choose Buckman as the FT shooter there at the end?

Tovarich: He's supposed to be the best. I've never seen such a collection of long, complicated drawn out free throw motions. I had no idea I had so many lefties. The FT shooting was embarrassing. I may take Crenshaw off the bench and have him handle the ball at the end of games and shoot the FT's because his motion is the least ridiculous on this team. Everyone else is so herky jerky, some of them are leaning like they may as well shoot sideways.

Reporter: Brickens didn't score, is that a concern?

Tovarich: His main scoring will be against the press, more specifically the 1-2-1-1 which is most common. This was a man to man press, so it was a little different. I like his speed to take advantage of the press, but in the half court, he's so undersized, I'm not going to rely on him.

Reporter: Mbanugo and Buckman have been very up and down with their shooting.

Tovarich: Yeah, freshman, am I right?

                              Reporter: (rolls eyes)

Tovarich: I know, I know. It didn't even make sense against Stanford. We lost because they have better talent, not because we start 5 FR.

Reporter: How about the crowd support here?

Tovarich: Incredible. We had 3,500 or so at our first home game. We started last year with such sparse crowds that I think we were an approved venue for people in witness protection. It got better as the season went on, but we can fill up an arena on the other side of the country, crazy.

Tovarich: We didn't look much like freshmen today.

Reporter: No chance you'll play Crosswhite even in a blowout?

Tovarich: Him playing accomplishes nothing for the future of this program. I'll toss him out there for a minute on senior night.

Reporter: What about Atako, Ravello and Gomes? Why so few minutes in a blowout for them?

Tovarich: Because they're also less relevant for the future of the program. I'm hopeful they all choose to leave. Regardless of who is a starter or not, the 5 FR need to be out there to develop whether it's a close game or a blowout. So the minutes go mostly to them.

Reporter: You tried one possession of 2-3 zone defense?

Tovarich: Yeah, and they hit a 3 immediately. I think that's the end of that.

Reporter: Is there any reason to think you can win @ Gonzaga?

Tovarich: No. That's a learning experience. We have a weak field in Montana for this tournament it looks like, so hopefully we take care of those two games. Compared to Gonzaga, our two conference games ought to be easy, so we'll see what we can and can't do again with an elite opponent. Our un-elite conference should feel like a breeze comparatively.
