Tovarich: Copy and paste previous speeches. We can't rebound. I should just make a recording of that. Their PF, who we got in foul trouble and only played 9 minutes had more than twice as many rebounds as any individual on our team, and half of our team total. Their two bigs in 28 minutes outrebounded our whole team 15-14. We might beat Denver and the Citadel like that, but no one meaningful.

Reporter: Is the losing streak going to weigh on the team's confidence on these long road trips?

Tovarich: I think they're happy to stay in a hotel that isn't an igloo and the sun comes out sometimes. These four game road trips are going to be the norm in scheduling. They're probably often going to be full of teams who are better than we are. I wish I could see the RPI so I can see how much these games are affecting us. I have to figure out the scheduling balance. Is it better to go 29-2 against a schedule full of cupcakes, or is it better to go 20-10 against a schedule laden with power foes? I have a lot of experimenting to do with that for these first few years. We're going to stick to home and homes with a lot of these teams as per the norm, and obviously some of these are one offs. Obviously Dayton and Ohio State and not coming to see us unless their hockey teams are going up and the hoopsters can tag along on the flight. Not sure how we make money to have a hockey team, but I guess that's the AD's problem. He might be spending our money on cloning assistant coaches. Maybe I'm fired in a year or two and a clone can coach the team to save him some money.

Reporter: Is it discouraging to shoot 7/12 on 3's and still not really threaten at the end of the game?

Tovarich: Yeah, we shot well from out there when we could get open, which wasn't often. They only played a little 2-3 zone. And it's harder in man to man to get open. We struggled finishing down low though. Atkinson recovered nicely from his 0-5 start. Marsh never could do anything. Taft was so-so. I don't even know if Scalzo or Wagner know how to shoot. I'm not sure they've taken a shot yet, I'd have to look. I'd prefer they don't, since I doubt they can help. We'll hang in there as best we can. I don't know what to do with rebounding, other than accept we can't. We'll try to keep forcing turnovers. We haven't had much chance to press yet, haven't been even slightly effective when we have. That's a last resort anyway. I don't want people tired. The bench had to play more than usual today and that's not a good thing.

Tovarich: Who needs rebounds huh? Of the games on this road trip, I thought we might win, this would've ranked last. I see they have 3 players injured, so we caught them at the right time I guess. Had to be a reason they just lost to Sacred Heart too.

Reporter: Is this the biggest win in school history coach?

Tovarich: Yep, out of all 6 wins in D1.

Reporter: Which play at the end was the biggest?

Tovarich: They were all big. The 3 by Spears to break the tie with about 90 seconds. Then one of their bigs was going in for a tying layup with 37 seconds to go and Atkinson was in perfect position and got the block. Then 11/12 on the intentional FT's was huge. It got them into taking quick 3's and they finally missed a few there.

Reporter: So, do you not need rebounds?

Tovarich: If you can be +10 in rebounds and +19 at the FT line, then no. But it took that just to squeak it out at the end. Also, Atkinson isn't usually going to go for 33. He's capable obviously, and we were lucky Ohio State's C is also a FR. You hope things will improve against the lower competition there. But it takes a lot of other factors to make up for being outrebounded by 15 a game or so on average.

Tovarich: Well, we almost sort of rebounded. I'm not sure if our center getting 5 rebounds can be construed as progress, but sadly it kind of is. Only -2 today doesn't seem so bad on the surface, but their two starting big guys only combined for 29 minutes because we got them in foul trouble, and we still didn't exactly deliver in the rebounding totals. But we made shots, and other than the one guy, they couldn't.

Reporter: Do you feel the momentum coming back after the 3-game losing streak?

Tovarich: Not really. I'm sure they're 1-8 for a reason. Most of our home games are pretty winnable.

Reporter: What might rebounding have looked like if you didn't draw some fouls on their bigs?

Tovarich: Their center only had 2 rebounds in 16 minutes, so maybe they have the same problem we have.

Reporter: Has it set in yet that without conference games, no games on the schedule are any more important than any other?

Tovarich: Since conference tournaments decide autobids, I'm not sure it matters. You're just playing to get into your tournament if you're in a league that doesn't let everyone in, and then anything can happen when you get there. Our scheduling right now is purely experimental. Once I can see some RPI numbers, I can look around and see where we rank relative to teams with identical records and see who they played and where they might have some advantages or disadvantages. I know RPI is volatile with so few games played, but I'd like to start seeing how it's affected now.

Tovarich: (sits down and keeps laughing)

Reporter: You laughed most of the game coach. What's so funny?

          Tovarich: Rebounding.

          Reporter: Any ideas?

Tovarich: Just laugh. I especially liked when the missed the and-1, and we fouled them on the putback, and then when they missed THAT and-1 also, they got the rebound and put it back for a 6-point possession. If I were them I'd miss on purpose too just to get it back so you don't have to settle for 1 point.

Reporter: Can you keep overcoming it?

Tovarich: Well, we can be +20 in turnovers. They were unbelievably lazy with the passing. Too bad for them. They scored on 80% of their possessions. They had 11 offensive rebounds. We barely had 11 for the game.

Reporter: Atkinson is usually a more dominant part of the offense, why not tonight?

Tovarich: 22 steals probably resulted in about 36 points in transition, so that's a lot fewer halfcourt possession. They were overwhelmingly 2-3 zone and we were shooting well, so that was the primary offense tonight. It's good to have some variety and get some others involved and know you have other plans.

Tovarich: Lots of ridiculous individual performances in that game. We couldn't do anything to stop Allen Iverson I and Allen Iverson II there. Luckily Atkinson was great too. We're lucky they didn't have a true center on their roster and were undersized down low, so they couldn't really defend him.

Reporter: Was any defensive strategy going to work against Whitney and Sessoms?

Tovarich: I resorted to double teaming them both. I've never in my life considered doing that with a PG because it always leaves someone open, usually Sessoms in this case. And there wasn't much of anyone to go double team him. Crazy numbers. They either shot it well or drove right by us. I don't feel like anything was going to stop them.

Reporter: You seem more comfortable playing at a fast pace?

Tovarich: Yeah, even the B team has some ability to score and rebound occasionally. They're not just out there to stand around either. We have some shooters, though not Spears today, and we can score down low. We're in every game so we don't seem to be outmatched even when we should be.

            Reporter: Concern for Spears' shooting?

Tovarich: It happens. We accepted he wasn't hitting anything, so he ended up with 6 assists. He even tied with the team lead for 5 rebounds. I'd call his night successful.

Reporter: Is winning a tournament, even a small one like this a big deal?

Tovarich: It would make me a better coach, so I'll take that.

Tovarich: I certainly didn't come to this tournament expecting to end anyone's undefeated season. I'm not sure why we're overachieving so much. I thought it would be harder. I don't expect to go win either of these next two on the way home, but I didn't expect to win either game here either.

Reporter: Are you surprised they didn't abandon the zone?

Tovarich: More I'm surprised they abandoned it and went back to it. We started 4/5 on 3's and they got out of it and went to man to man for the rest of the half. Then they came out of halftime back in their 1-3-1. So we kept taking all the open 3's. We cooled off considerably but since we'd built a big lead in the first half, we could afford some misses.

Reporter: Did this seem like another step back in rebounding?

Tovarich: Well, you love when your SG leads your team with 5 rebounds. That's just called Thursday around here though.

Reporter: This was your lowest FT output this season. Was it just because of all the jumpshots?

Tovarich: Probably mostly. But they seemed stingy with the fouls. We were lucky they couldn't make any.

Tovarich: Frustrating to have so many chances in the last minute and we couldn't execute a single thing right in that time. They press us up 3, we beat the press, can't make a layup. We have to foul 5 times. They miss the front end but it takes 3 bounces on the rim first so Atkinson's timing is off and they grab the rebound. Then they miss again and we manage that, but we brick the tying 3. We get a steal and try to get it down for a quick 2, they block it. We get another chance at a 3 to tie and miss that. We could do nothing right at the end, and it might just have taken one of those things to get us to overtime.

Reporter: What could you have done to defend the 3's better?

Tovarich: I thought we did a good job getting a hand in people's face. 11/20 is pretty crazy. I'm not fooled by Allen Iversen changing the o to an e. I could see who it was. It didn't matter if we stayed tight on them. They drilled it like we weren't there, and they probably rebounded it anyway if they did miss.

Reporter: Is playing it close with a good team on the road encouraging?

Tovarich: More just frustrating because we had chances. I know we can beat better teams. We haven't done a lot of it on the road yet, but we know we can, so I don't need moral victories to tell me we can. We just need to finish in the paint better. We need rebounds. In 30+ games in a season, you run into some hot shooting sometimes. You have to try and do some other things to counter it.

                  Reporter: More 3's for you?

Tovarich: They were strictly man to man the entire game, which was a first this year. So open 3's were tough to get. They blocked a couple of them when we tried to force it.

Reporter: How would you assess your pressing at the end?

Tovarich: I think this is only the second or third time we've tried to press in the last minute so I have very little to go on, but I think we've only managed one steal in it this season. It's been ineffective. We've forced way more turnovers in the half court.

Tovarich: Sucks to lose, but hell of an effort. It was a gritty second half to come back. We missed the 3 at the buzzer unfortunately. It would've been an unlikely win.

Reporter: Was there a plan at the end after they missed the front end of the 1 and 1?

Tovarich: I could've called a timeout and seen what we could do with 5 seconds, but they were on their heels, so we tossed it over to Murry. He had a decent look. I don't think anyone had time to get down in the paint without a timeout but I wasn't going to overtime unless I had no choice.

Reporter: Can you take some positives from this, even though you said you don't need moral victories?

Tovarich: Yeah, the kids have character. There was no reason to think we were going to come back and make that interesting. We were garbage in the first half. We couldn't make many shots. We couldn't rebound. We couldn't force many turnovers. We couldn't force many misses. That carried on for a bit into the second half too. Then we got on a run there with about 5 minutes to go and we made it suspenseful. It'd have been easy to give up and acknowledge they're better than us. We fought back. That's why you play these games where you're outmatched.

                    Reporter: And a check.

Tovarich: Yeah, who knows where money goes in this world. I certainly don't see it.

Reporter: You're only back home for 2 games. Is that enough to get some positive momentum back?

Tovarich: If we win, sure. But the next road trip's going to be tough. That last one we have in February everything's pretty winnable on that trip. The 4 game trip won't be about the wins and losses. By then maybe we'll have some RPI to look at and get some information from every game, see how we compare with other people and collect some data to see how we should schedule in the future.

Tovarich: +12 in rebounds. I wondered if that was a feeling I would ever come to know.

Reporter: What did you do on defense to force all the misses?

Tovarich: Nothing we didn't do our first 16 games.

Reporter: Is there something about your home court? You haven't lost there yet?

Tovarich: That's probably more the competition than anything we're doing, but we've sold out every game so far. It only takes 4,000 but that probably still isn't easy when you play up here.

Reporter: Can you bring these types of performances on the road? That hasn't happen a lot yet.

Tovarich: There's a lot I can critique about that one even. Rebounding just for once isn't one of them. We shot 3's poorly. We missed in the paint a lot. We didn't quite get to the line like we normally do. 6 turnovers is fairly high for us. It's tougher to get those messages through when you did it in a game you won by 24. We have 8 road games left and 5 of them are pretty winnable. So, I expect the answer is home is just where our easier competition usually is, and I'd say we play pretty well on the road too. We've been in every game even when we lose.

Tovarich: Incredible what we had to do to overcome the greatest 90 seconds in the history of basketball.

Reporter: How big was their steal and halfcourt shot as the first half expired?

Tovarich: It must have been the greatest momentum shift there ever was. We got a rare rebound with 5 seconds and tried to throw it down court to someone before the buzzer and they snag it out of the air at halfcourt and throw it in. Then come out of halftime and outscore us 12-0 in 90 seconds. We missed multiple point blank layups. They got every miss right back for an easy putback. Literally everything went 100% wrong for us and 100% right for them for that minute and a half.

                          Reporter: Then after the timeout?

Tovarich: Then I just subbed out all the starters for a minute to see if the bench could do anything. That didn't work either. Their lead went up to 14 I think. The crowd was booing us for the first time, rather disappointing. They seem to have become spoiled quickly by the overachieving start to the season.

Reporter: How did your starters find the energy for the rest of the game?

Tovarich: It defies all logic. I think they went back in with 11 minutes to go, down 14. We had to put the press on to try and come back. We were semi-effective with it. But they played the final 11 minutes without ever getting tired. They should've been exhausted about 3-4 minutes into the frantic pace we were all playing at, because they full court pressed us all game until there were about 6 minutes to go in the second half. But I kept checking and they had great energy that whole time. Then we must have gone forever without a stoppage too. Maybe the adrenaline from the comeback or when the crowd stopped booing us. I've never seen an extended stretch of 100% effort basketball like that not drain them of energy.

Reporter: How do you feel about your spot in the mid-major poll?

Tovarich: I still don't have any RPI to go by, so that's the best indicator I have. We're down at 21. No one in that imaginary made-up poll is in the actual top 25. I have no idea if they have votes or not, which is a silly thing to hide from us. So, you figure there are 73 power schools and another 35 major ones. 86 of the 108 have won 60% of their games, so you figure we're ranked behind all of those teams, maybe even some below 60% and we're 21st amongst everyone else. So you have to imagine the rankings say we're about 120-125th right now. The two teams we just beat aren't very good, so that probably didn't do us much help. We dropped 5 spots for losing to New Mexico and Arizona State on the road in close games though. So, right now, you kind of lean toward thinking you have to schedule a boatload of major/power schools and win a majority of them to get yourself where you want to go. We'll see what the RPI says. Maybe it likes us better than the pollsters.

Tovarich: Whew. They really caught fire in the middle of the second half there, took the lead briefly. Clutch lay-in by Atkinson there with about 51 seconds to go. We forced a miss on their end and made both our FT's. Needed them both when they hit the 3 with 10 seconds to go.

Reporter: What did you think of their inability to foul you at the end?

Tovarich: It wasn't really an inability, just selfish by their PG. He racked up 4 intentional fouls there at the end since they were only at 3 for the half. But he refused to foul out, so we were able to run around and avoid it when someone else finally ran over.

Reporter: Atkinson gets the first double-double in school history!

Tovarich: Yeah, about time huh. And in our only rivalry game. Maybe he just needs more motivation.

Reporter: You held at #21 in the mid-major poll despite going 2-0 last week. Is that worrying?

Tovarich: The NCAA tournament isn't on my mind for this season, but in the long term trying to figure out the right philosophy to get there, it's a little concerning. I know they were two struggling teams, but to see no tangible benefit, it leans you toward thinking you need a tough schedule rather than filling it with cupcakes. But we need the talent to be able to beat bigger schools on a regular basis too, and we're far from that. Trying to play 26 easy games and then hope a couple tournaments give you a little SOS is probably not looking like a solution.

Reporter: How does the team feel about being somewhere warm for the first time?

Tovarich: Yeah, you leave bundled up in a parka and it's 70 and sunny when you land and they're handind you a lei. It's an odd trip for sure. You wanna go hit the golf course or something but you get attacked by nene. That's a bit of an improvement from a grizzly bear or an angry moose. We'll see what Southern California has in store for us.

You've had a lot of exciting games lately, taking all sorts of different forms too. I'm glad this season seems to be a fun one.

Lots of close games, but still a bit easier than I expected. I remember when I started at Eastern Shore the first time, I was 8-2. Then I started over after I bumped it up one level and I was 4-8. I noticed the difference for sure. This one I don't nearly as much. They shoot better and rebound better, that much is obvious, but I think they're actually worse at turning the ball over. Offense on my end seems about the same.
