Tovarich: I don't want to tell Northern Colorado coach how to coach or anything, but maybe get out of the 2-3 zone sooner when we're shooting like that. Waiting until the last 4 minutes of the game is a little late. Also, if we're destroying your press, maybe just give it up down 38?

Reporter: Would you like to get excited about winning rebounds or blame it on all their desperation shots that they had no one around the basket for?

Tovarich: It's pretty clear that's what it was. They had us in rebounds at halftime I think 18-11, so we got them 20-9 in the second. Obviously it's from them jacking 3's before they even had anyone under the basket. Also we didn't miss that many shots so they got fewer defensive chances to grab one.

Reporter: You're finally playing a game next against one of the other independents? Is that like a conference game in a way?

Tovarich: Someone thinks so. I'm not allowed to schedule them myself. Unless I get handed a rough draft of a schedule with them all on it, I can't add them. But, no. All games are equal and I can actually say it without it being coachspeak.

Reporter: It appears you're going to finish the season without any of the players being unhappy. How do you achieve that?

Tovarich: Cut the ones who are going to be unhappy before they get a chance to be.

Tovarich: I don't want to tell Utah Valley State coach too much about how to play defense when we didn't play any ourselves either, but maybe watch some tape from 2 days ago and see what Northern Colorado so brilliantly showed you not to do?

Reporter: How about Atkinson being perfect?

Tovarich: Yeah, the other three big guys were 7/16, so he was a godsend. Couldn't rebound to save his life as usual, but that's ok. We shot well from 3 luckily. We couldn't stop them from making everything they took either.

Reporter: You seemed unhappy with the refs.

Tovarich: 12-4 is quite a difference. Do we get independent refs? How does that work? Does each school get a crew? That was definitely a pro-Utah Valley State crew.

Reporter: Why do you think they didn't shoot more 3's?

Tovarich: I certainly would have if I were them. That Pranciiauskas guy seemed like he couldn't miss. I swore we just played one of those the other day. Maybe that's like the Lithuanian version of Smith.

Reporter: What was the strategy at the end?

Tovarich: Well, going back to the last question, I guess I should thank them for not taking more 3's. We were up 3 and they didn't once go for the tie. They probably scored 5 in a row but all 2's. So, they scored with 39.1 to go and the plan was to run the shot clock down to 1 and fire off a 3, so that even if it missed, time would hopefully run down enough that best case, they're firing off some 75 foot shot or so. Turned out to go in and that was the dagger.

Tovarich: It seemed like the writing was on the wall when we're down 8-0 in 51 seconds. Then someone came along and graffiti'd the wall with something more permanent when it was 25-7 4 minutes later. I was shocked to come back and take the lead, but so many things went against us in the game, so many superhuman efforts from their shooters, that even with 57 seconds left and the first lead of the game, it felt like something was going to happen for us to lose, and sure enough, on what had to be the 30th deflected pass of the game, 27 of which seemed to go back to them, we got punished for our deflection and it went right to someone under the basket for a free layin with 7 seconds to do, and then shocker, like almost every 3 we took, we bricked it at the buzzer.

Reporter: Was there for hope for getting into the tournament if you won this?

Tovarich: It doesn't seem like it. We're not even listed on the bubble with an RPI for 53, but we just played a team who was 66th, and they're one of the first four out. So, I'm not sure what conclusion I should draw there. But obviously now it is hopeless. We'll see where we get seeded in the NIT, so long as we don't lose to Monmouth and FDU wins their last 4 to steal it from us.

Reporter: What was the plan on the last possession?

Tovarich: There wasn't one. I should have called a timeout and gotten organized. 8 seconds was too long for Atkinson, who was on fumes to get down into the post. Murry was open for 3 so we took it. When you're 4/23, you don't have much hope of it going in, but in the chaos, you don't always do it right.

Reporter: Why so many 3's when they weren't falling

Tovarich: I did give up on those eventually. Those were largely trying to get back in it from 18 down, but eventually you notice a pattern. You've fought back to get within 3 and you shoot 0% on tying 3's, but then you shoot almost 100% on a two to get within one point. Then they go down and shoot like 95% to get it back to 3. So, you finally get it down to 1 and then get a steal and take the lead, but it still wasn't good enough. It took a lot of things going wrong, and an other-worldly performance by them and a lot of bad bounces and we still had a chance. We'll be a better team next year.

Tovarich: Good win to finish the regular season, a nice 11-1 home season. We won on Senior Day.

Reporter: Speaking of Senior Day coach...

Tovarich: I know, I know. I'm a bad person. I should've started Zwikker. I forgot. I tried to make it up to him during the game. I let him have as many shots as he needed to get double digit points for the first time. We were on 67 and the students were chanting about tacos. I assume they mean fish tacos because we're closer to Greenland than we are Mexico. So he got the breakaway on a steal and the and-1 to go us to 70 and we gave him some extra minutes, so hopefully I made up for it.

              Reporter: How does recruiting look?

Tovarich: We're 100% at the mercy of whether or not anyone else offers a scholarship. There's not a single guy we're 1st in except for the 2* PG from Fairbanks. As much as I appreciate his Mr. Basketball title for the great state of Alaska, I probably don't gain much from signing him. It makes me a better coach to be able to say I got the best player from my state, but probably not worth a scholarship. That's like doomsday scenario when we whiff on everyone, which we might.

Reporter: FDU lost 2 games, so you had clinched the NIT autobid before this game. What do you hope to get out of that tournament?

Tovarich: I mostly just want to see what seed we get there, so I know how far we were from the tournament. I wouldn't expect to beat whatever 14-loss power school we draw who is angry they're playing us instead of being in the real tournament and it's not particularly relevant to the future of the program if we do anything in it.

Reporter: Can you conclude anything about your scheduling strategy yet?

Tovarich: I'm trying to figure it out. We're not on the bubble at 53 in the RPI, but some people who are 68 and 69 are, so does the RPI matter? The rankings in the fake mid-major poll aren't in line with Joe Lunardi's bracketology either. So, what do we do differently? Just get more talent? We scheduled three power schools and they all have 11, 13 and 15 losses right now, with more to come because we're probably the first team to finish our season. So did that help us any? Or were we better off playing more Butler's who are 23-5? We got 7th ranked Wisconsin in the Great Alaska Shootout only for them to finish 14-14, so do I accept that scheduling is just totally random and I have no idea how it'll pan out? My schedule for next year I think will be similar, maybe a little bit harder and we'll try to get more talent. That's more within our control.

Tovarich: I appreciate the committee letting us stay at home for no reason. Even if they got half the tickets apparently, it was nice not to travel 3,000 miles or whatever it is.

Reporter: Were you surprised by all the Nebraska fans?

Tovarich: I guess if you have an excuse to leave Nebraska, you take it. We filled up a much bigger arena in El Paso for the Sun Bowl Classic somehow. Half the state must have traveled for that one, so no surprises.

Reporter: What did you think of your placement in the bracket?

Tovarich: You kinda wonder when you get a 6 seed and all the other 6's and all the 7's and 8's are automatic if you were even going to be in the tournament without the autobid. You can analyze the RPI and we were around 50 but an afterthought in the eyes of the committee. People in the high 60's got in though. You can analyze your spot in the fake mid-major poll, and you finish 7th, but you're seeded the same as 24 and 25 in the poll, so the analysis in the end tells you those things don't really mean anything. We played a decent schedule I think. Ultimately, I'm not even sure it was the results that matters. Somewhere, someone just looked at our team and used the talent level as an excuse to put us where they did. I think we'll find if we achieved these same results next year with some decent recruits hopefully, we'll be slotted better.

Reporter: Do you wish Atkinson could have played all 28 minutes?

Tovarich: Yeah. It was hard to find anyone else who had a good night. Nebraska struggled too. Maybe they were tired. Maybe we turned the heat off inside the arena and it affected them because even Nebraska may as well be a desert compared to here.

Reporter: How do you feel about a re-match with Butler?

Tovarich: I can't remember much of that game. Maybe when I see the names something will register, but they get to come here again inexplicably. I'll take it. I know we lost by 10, so I'll take a glance at the boxscore and see what we did and maybe it'll just go differently since it was a road game and we were on a losing streak at the season. I imagine both teams have come a long way since.

Tovarich: Luckily Spears came out of halftime on fire from 3 because it would have otherwise been hard to keep up with their 8/13 3-point shooting in the second half. Nice win, nice payback for them beating us by 10 at their place.

Reporter: Is the NCAA going to keep letting you turn the heater off and freezing the opponents?

Tovarich: No, mostly because that was our last home game. We've gotta be like 4,000 miles away the day after tomorrow.

Reporter: What was the difference between this game and the first?

Tovarich: I didn't really remember the specifics but I saw rebounding was 31-12 the first time. Easily the most embarrassing for that statistic. Now we outrebounded them. We're up to 3-26-1 at rebounding? Crazy. Must be our home court. We're one point away from a perfect home season.

Reporter: Is the 6-seed from the NIT committee fueling the team?

Tovarich: It sure offended me. It's nice to prove we belonged, and it was even extra nice of them to let us play at home twice which we had no business doing.

Reporter: Do you care about which opponent you get next?

Tovarich: It's a long way either way. We may as well get on the plane and just start flying that way (points toward the rest of America) somewhere and adjust when we find out.

Reporter: Would it be a big deal to win the NIT?

Tovarich: Yeah, it's better than putting up a banner that says 2008 Independent Champions. It would be unexpected though. Playing away from home is a lot different.

I wanted to see how terrible it would be to get from Anchorage to Bowling Green, KY. Turns out not as bad as I thought.

                                1) 3.5 hour flight to Seattle
                                2) 1 hour layover
                                3) 4 hour flight to Nashville
                                4) 1 hour bus ride to Bowling Green

Good luck with the flights coach Tovarich.
