Tovarich: Awesome recovery from an awful and nervous start. The big guys were incredible. We didn't do everything well, but we finished down low. We're so far ahead of schedule it's hard to believe. I thought it might take 5-10 years to get to a tournament game, let alone win one. It's been much easier than I thought.

Reporter: Even if you lost, was it a big deal just to get here?

Tovarich: You have to go back to 1991 for a reason for an independent to be in. And that was DePaul, so they were an established program who just so happened not to have a conference at the time. But the challenges of getting a roster together too. These guys play way over their heads so far as what they're supposed to be on paper.

    Reporter: What changed at halftime?

Tovarich: I'm not even sure it was halftime. It was just the awful start we had to be down 14-4, turning the ball over, missing easy shots, etc. But everything did seem to turn around at halftime too. They went from 0-6 on 3's to 7-10 after the half. FT's were 6-1 for them in the firt half, then 17-2 for us, though 4 of those were intentional there at the end, so call it 13-2. Rebounding got better too. We went from 13-8 down to winning 10-7 on the boards. There weren't many misses in the second half, so rebounds were scarce. Both teams shot like crazy. Ours were overwhelmingly from 1 foot away unlike their barrage of 3's, but all those FT's finally that we weren't getting in the first half were huge.

Reporter: Assuming nothing crazy, what do you know about Duke for the 2nd round?

Tovarich: Nothing yet. We'll glance over the roster. As much as we did right today, I suspect that wouldn't even be close to good enough. We'll need to hit 3's better. We'll do our best to hang in there on the boards. We'll try to draw fouls. We were even in turnovers. That might be a first for us. We almost always win that. We have to again for sure. We might have to be near perfect. We certainly can't come out and get down 10 in 3 minutes and get desperate.

Tovarich: I said we needed an A+ game to win that one. We probably had a B- game. That'd never be good enough against them. It was hard to feel like we were ever really in it after we lead 6-2 or so. They had us at arm's length the entire second half, somewhere in the 10-15 range and we never really could make a dent.

Reporter: Why do you think they drove it in with 15 seconds left and drew a foul and then dunked with 1.5 to go instead of running the clock out?

Tovarich: K will be retired before I'd have the ability to get him back in any way for that most likely, so he's safe I think. He must've watched the Southern Utah game where they did the same. I can do something about them though.

Reporter: Did you feel outmatched? Or just didn't play well enough?

Tovarich: Both. We did ok on the boards, relatively speaking. That could've easily been worse. They shot 3's and we didn't. Atkinson tried to carry us, but that's a big ask. We needed more people to step up. We were sloppy with the ball. Their halfcourt trap was effective. It was like playing UCLA. They're too big and too athletic and there are things you can't do against them that you can do against the Grand Canyon's of the world.

Reporter: Can the program become a regular in the NCAA tournament?

Tovarich: It'd be hit and miss I imagine We toned down the schedule a tad this year. We backloaded the big teams until we were ready because we start 2 freshman and 2 sophomores. We had one less power opponent, 2 fewer majors and even 4 fewer mids. It just kinda turned out that most of the teams we were finishing home and homes with were worse this year than last. It takes 27 regular season wins to get an 8 seed though, so we had a little bit of wiggle room, maybe could've lost one more game in there and still made it. That's a high emphasis on beating the teams you're supposed to and not slipping up more than once like we did with Southern Utah. We had a win over Arizona to fall back on though, and Western Michigan.

Reporter: What will next year's team look like?

Tovarich: We'll be crazy young. 7-8 FR on the roster. We lose the top 2 PG's and I expect Scalzo to leave, so no PG's returning. We'll go from 4 PF's to likely just one. I'm going to have to bring in a real big haul of players. Hopefully I don't get handed a stack of rejection letters from all the recruits on day 1 of recruiting.

I thought you may have lost to the champion, but alas Duke was eliminated in the Elite 8.

Further info on coaching changes: All coaches who switched jobs brought both assistants with them. Both assistants under Lute Olson were hired as head coaches. Only 2 assistants available to me (Norfolk State coach and Hargett (previously St. John's assistant) were just fired. All other schools hired assistants C+ or better while I only had C choices. No one unhired from the previous offseason seems to exist anywhere. Texas Tech coach hired 2 assistants that did not previously exist to assist him at Oral Roberts. Arizona assistant also hired 2 assistants that did not previously exist to assist him at Western Illinois. Bowling Green assistant promoted to head coach at Drexel replaced by a previously non-existent assistant. No assistants retired or were fired by any returning head coach. South Carolina's two assistants are nowhere to be found after Odom retired.

Reporter: Is the rumor true that your first game in both tournaments is going to be Iowa?

                        Tovarich: Yes. Crazy coincidence.

Reporter: So this schedule will probably have more power opponents than ever before?

Tovarich: For sure. We're guaranteed at least 6. We have better talent, it's just younger talent.

Reporter: It looks like we're done even sooner than last year.

Tovarich: Yeah, the AD really needs to be fired. We'll be done on the 19th of February. I can't add games that late. All he gave us in terms of Independents were the two games with Southern Utah. We won't see any of the other five. So we'll be playing two games per week like clockwork for almost the entire season.

Tovarich: The depth chart is going to be a work in progress for much of the season I think. I was shocked to see Scalzo back. I thought I'd have another scholarship for a PG. He came back, but I don't imagine him being on the court. One of the SG's will be the backup PG-whichever one shoots 3's the worst. Herman I expect will transfer at the end of the season. Stivers has no real range from 3, so I'm not sure how much use I have for him. Spears will just be the backup SF when I send the B team out. Atkinson's not going to be happy moving to the bench after averaging 24 ppg for his career so far. But if for some reason our new C doesn't rebound either or keep up with his scoring pace, I won't hesitate to make that change despite what the ratings on paper say.

Reporter: Are we going back to the NCAA tournament coach?

Tovarich: The schedule is challenging, more power opponents, and more major opponents even, it's far lighter on cupcakes like we had last year. The talent is better, but we will be lacking in team unity, so expect some inconsistency. I don't know how ready they will be for the harder schedule. Scalzo is our only SR, so everyone else is back next year, except Herman hopefully. So, down the road, hopefully this helps. But it wasn't the ideal schedule to get us back to the tournament this season, no.

Reporter: Who is your new assistant coach?

Tovarich: I kept tape guy. I hired a new assistant recruiter. I don't know his name. I didn't know the last one's either.

Reporter: So what is the goal in recruiting?

Tovarich: Just Scalzo's scholarship is open, so obviously we'll go aggressively for a PG. Then I expect Herman to transfer at the end of the season and we'll be going to just whoever is the best player we can get at any position probably as we don't have any other kind of immediate need. A center would be the preference for when Atkinson graduates next season, but we're flexible with that.

Almost all your recruits are from warm weather locations. You must have really tricked them during recruiting

Slight update-my new assistant Copeland was an original Grambling assistant who did not coach last season, but was available for me to choose this time, ruining my theory that assistants left jobless for a year disappeared. The current Grambling assistants are C+ assistants, an improvement over Copeland who is a C, leaving me as the bottom of the totem pole apparently. Even though better assistants appear to be available, like Dave Odom's previous assistants, there seems to be a certain grade available to each school and the ones with better grades will apparently hold out for a better job rather than settle. I did also notice that one of the assistants available in the pool to me was an original Jackson State assistant who was left jobless when Jackson State coach retired after the first season, making 2 freshly jobless coaches and one other previous coach available for me to choose. The only other opening from the first offseason was Tennessee-Martin, whose assistants are nowhere to be found. None of the original list of assistant coaches prior to the first season have been hired anywhere.

Tovarich: Wow. I'm stunned. We were out of that game, with pretty much nothing going right. I can't believe we're sitting here 1-0. I really can't.

Reporter: What changed when you went down 66-44?

Tovarich: They couldn't hit a shot all of a sudden. They were ridiculous in the first half. 8/11 on 3's. I don't know about overall. They were 18-11 on the boards. They even came out on fire and started up 16-7. Then for whatever reason, they missed at least 10 shots in a row. So we get to 66-60. They only got their next two baskets because of offensive rebounds. They were cursed for a while. We went from 2/9 on 3's in the first half to 5/7 in the second. We're back ahead. They have 2 FT's to tie it with about 5 seconds to go and they miss the front end. We were able to get the clock down to 1.1 and we hit the front end to make it 3 and intentionally missed the second so all they had was an 80 foot heave.

Reporter: You came out of halftime pressing, but did you feel it was effective?

Tovarich: It really wasn't. We got almost no turnovers off of it. They were pretty good with the ball. They blitzed us early. I can't possibly say what changed all of a sudden. It's baffling.

Reporter: Why do you think the slow start?

Tovarich: Poor team unity. Freshmen doing freshman stuff. We were brutal in the paint. We were brutal from 3. We weren't getting to the line. We were turning it over. We weren't playing defense. They were having a freak shooting night, but we still weren't tight enough on the 3-point shooters despite my instructions to do so. We were soft on the boards, as per usual. It's hard to explain how we were only down 13 actually.

Reporter: Do you think the first 18 minutes or the last 10 is the best indication of what this team will be?

Tovarich: All of it wrapped in one. We are going to be wildly inconsistent. I don't think you'll see all that stuff in one game again. That was a lifetime of stuff wrapped up into one wild game. But there are going to be some awful performances minus the 22-point comeback. There might be some amazing performances like the last 10 minutes. Obviously the talent continues to improve. I expect to be really good next year, but this year I think there's no getting around inconsistency and we may never know what we're going to get game to game. Today we went back to the veterans who used to start more like Spears and Atkinson when we were down. Hopefully a lot of the freshmen just had freshmen nerves and they've worked it out and we'll be better back at home. They get a couple easier games before the Great Alaska Shootout where I know the competition will be stiff.

Reporter: Why start on the road against a rival with such a young team when you eased up on the schedule so much last year to accommodate the majority of the starters being freshmen?

Tovarich: That probably wasn't a good idea. We haven't done it before. We stay home before we get into our hosting duties for whichever tournament up here and then we had out on one of our long road trips. But we got to the point in the scheduling process where we had one game left and we realized we forgot to get our rivals on the schedule and the only time it made sense to travel there was to start the season. It wasn't ideal. Nothing about this schedule is ever ideal. I wish this moron AD would get me some games later in the season instead of wrapping up on the 19th of February again.

Reporter: Hawaii seemed upset you were trying to plant your flag on their court? How do you even do that?

Tovarich: You don't, the same way you don't on an astroturf football field, but it doesn't stop everyone from trying.
