Tovarich: I almost don't know what to say about that. I think I know how Wisconsin felt against Arizona in that NCAA tournament game in 2015.

Reporter: What are you talking about coach?

Tovarich: Oh, right. That hasn't happened yet. Anyway, insane shooting. We were trying to be nicer in the second half so, we only shot 3 3's, and we stuck with the 2's, which we had no trouble with either.

Reporter: Did Western Michigan just run into a buzzsaw?

Tovarich: Then were run through a woodchipper and plowed over with a bulldozer and then fed to a polar bear.

Reporter: Is +12 in rebounding a school record?

Tovarich: I should think so. And it may stand forever. We didn't give them a lot of chances at the easier to come by defensive rebounds, and I think we only gave up 2 or 3 offensive ones.

Tovarich: The final margin looks nice, but we were only up 2 or 3 for most of the last 5 minutes and we finally made some shots there at the end. Both teams' shooting went awry there in the second half after a good first half. Maybe we both would have preferred to skip halftime and keep going. Nevertheless, we did just enough to get by.

Reporter: How tough is this 5-game road trip going to be?

Tovarich: Very. These next couple teams have some impressive records. Iowa again, I expect a better game from them. They're young, so they should be improving. Connecticut obviously will be a tall task. We'll certainly need to be better than today.

Reporter: Did Pippen have a breakthrough today?

Tovarich: He's supposed to be our best 3-point shooter and we've only occasionally seen a glimpse of that but today was much needed from him. We didn't have a lot of open looks from 3 today since they never played any zone, but he was huge.

Reporter: Where did Spears disappear to?

Tovarich: Great question. He was just never open. I know his minutes are limited and he doesn't like it. We stuck him in there to shoot the FT's at the end there when they were fouling us just to remind ourselves he was there.

      Reporter: How's recruiting going?

Tovarich: Quiet so far. We've been evaluating a handful of PG's. Now that the in-season window is over, we're looking for backup plans for Herman and Stivers now that everyone who missed out on a kid who already signed has re-allocated their offers. We'll see who's falling through the cracks.

Tovarich: Pitiful rebounding. Poor field goal defense. More pitiful rebounding. It all adds up to a loss.

Reporter: Are they just actually good?

Tovarich: Obviously. Their only loss is to North Carolina. They went to Michigan and Penn State and won. But -15 in rebounds is still pitiful.

Reporter: What did you think of the consistency of the refs?

Tovarich: Well, 0 FT's for either team in the first half and then 15 in the second before the 6 intentional ones at the end.

Reporter: What did you think of the decision Carbaugh made after the steal?

Tovarich: In retrospect obviously, it would have been wise to call a timeout and set something up. But we're down 3 with 9 seconds to go and we feel like we maybe had a quick layup, but Wolfe got stuffed on it. Then they hit some more FT's. We got one miss on a FT there, and let them have the offensive rebound. Shocking, I know. We weren't good enough at much of anything tonight. +4 in turnovers is well below average for us, and doesn't make up for -15 in rebounds, or letting an 11ppg guy go for 19 at halftime and 27 for the game.

Reporter: Is the youth of the team the reason for the inconsistency home and away?

Tovarich: That goes for most teams, probably. It especially goes for young teams like us. They only get harder from here.

Tovarich: I'm usually on the other side of the miraculous second half speeches. Wild stuff. We couldn't have done much more wrong in the first half. Fouls were 8-1 against us and FT's 8-0. Rebounds were 26-7. They outshot us 67%-35%. We couldn't hit a 3, we couldn't finish a layup. Incredible transformation. I wish I could explain it.

Reporter: So you don't know what was different?

Tovarich: We made some baskets, and down 21 you need to get the press on and you can't really do that if you can't make some baskets to get it set up. Once we did that, we were able to cause some havoc with it. But that also doesn't matter if you keep shooting 35%. We must have been closer to 70 in the second. They were pretty consistent from half to half shooting. We were just so ultra-aggressive that we got a lot of steals and prevented shots.

Reporter: How about the late game FT's?

Tovarich: Yeah, 1/3 is poor. Wolfe missed one, Grady missed both. We need better there. The big guys are generally the only ones who get to the line with any regularity, so the guards are pretty unknown. Luz, I know I don't want him near the line with that herky jerky motion that makes finding the right release point difficult. But the guards are a small sample size. Wolfe's ok. Maybe Spears is a better choice, I'm not sure. We were lucky to stay up 4 though, so when they hit that 3 with .7 to go, we were good.

Reporter: No ideas for improving rebounding?

Tovarich: Force turnovers. Don't allow shots. Fixing the big guys' timing on jumping is just futile. Even as a JR, Atkinson does not seem to be getting better at it. Grady maybe will if we're lucky. We keep getting younger every year, so that's part of the battle.

Wild that Canisius is actually good. Someday you'll be a dominant rebounding team...hopefully.

Tovarich: That went a lot like the first game against Iowa, except we shot better on 3's this time around.

Reporter: Why are you able to rebound against Iowa so well?

Tovarich: They're pretty small for a "big" school. I know their FR C is out, but 6'7" and 6'8" down low is very small, even smaller than us. But mostly it's because they were rushing shots in the second half and we had a lot of uncontested rebounds because they were spotting up from 3 before half the team was down the court. If things stayed closer longer, that probably wouldn't be true.

              Reporter: Why is Iowa struggling?

              Tovarich: Low team unity.

Reporter: Still no Herman or Stivers?

Tovarich: Way too close, couldn't risk it.

Reporter: Are you hoping for Notre Dame in the championship tomorrow?

Tovarich: I'd love to get them. A top 25 team looks good on the resume no matter the result. I don't want to come over here and just play Albany, who would probably end up playing like Notre Dame because it's a tournament championship, so hopefully we don't see an upset in the next game.

Tovarich: Maybe I'm accustomed to it, but it didn't seem obvious to me that we were -20 in rebounds in the game. It's hard to explain how we won that one though. +12 turnovers is good, but shots were even in the end. They outshot us from 3 slightly. We only edged them at the FT line because of the intentional fouls at the end, which we were only 3-6 on. It's hard to look at the numbers and explain how we won. They just went cold at the end I guess. We certainly left them a chance with the missed FT's.

Reporter: Was the press the reason why?

Tovarich: They were pretty sloppy with the ball even before we put the press on down 61-49 with 9 minutes to go. And they were sloppy again after we took it off when we caught back up. You'd think an experienced team with such good team unity would hold on to the ball better.

Reporter: Is the road trip a success win or lose @ Connecticut?

Tovarich: For sure. Canisius was supposed to be the easy game on this trip. Rhode Island we pulled out of our backside in the second half, just like this one. UConn will be a tall task. Literally. I've glanced at their roster. They're enormous down low, especially compared to Notre Dame and Iowa who are no bigger than we are. Their C is 7'1" but a FR, so if we're lucky, he'll be a little clumsy. Maybe we can get him into some foul trouble. He only averages 5 boards a game, so if we can keep him under 12, that'll be good by our standards.

Reporter: Is a 4th loss this early in the season catastrophic for your tournament chances?

Tovarich: We went in as an 8 seed with 4 last year, so you'd think we could survive with 5. We have a lot of losable games left, especially when you don't beat Canisius like you think you should. Beating Notre Dame unexpectedly made up for that, so we're still at least one game ahead of expectations for now.

Tovarich: I'd say I know how Western Michigan felt, but I wasn't a jackass like Calhoun was about it. Crazy pace, crazy everything in that game really.

Reporter: Why do you think they kept full court pressing up 30?

                  Tovarich: Only Calhoun can answer.

Reporter: Why do you think they were shooting 3's with 9 seconds to go?

                  Tovarich: Only Calhoun can answer.

Reporter: What do you think he would say?

Tovarich: I don't know. I hope he doesn't retire, so we can come back next year.

Reporter: What do you think will be different next year?

Tovarich: We have everyone back. Everyone will remember what they just saw. We will full court press right back for all 28 minutes. We'll fire off 3's in transition. We'll shoot on every possession with 25 or more second on the shot clock and we'll keep doing it all.

Tovarich: A+ for Dartmouth coach for creativity.

Reporter: What would you call that defense?

Tovarich: I seriously have no idea. The opposite of a box and 1? Instead of picking one to play man against, they decided to just not play defense against one player at all?

Reporter: How effective did you think it was?

Tovarich: In a strange way, our 3-point shooting was below average. It had the potential to be a disaster if we'd shot better, like how they shot at almost 60% somehow. So, in some really bizarre way it wasn't the worst result for them.

Reporter: Is Spears going to need shoulder surgery after shooting that many 3's?

Tovarich: I doubt it. That's a once in a lifetime opportunity there I think. We owe Dartmouth a road game, so maybe when we go back to UConn, we'll swing by there and see them again and maybe he'll do a little better. That is, if Dartmouth coach isn't fired. Since they're 2-12, that strategy isn't working against much of anyone.

Tovarich: Frustrating game. We were in Lane's face on all his shots. He hit them like we went there anyway. We couldn't hit a 3 to save our lives. We probably should've just threw it into the post on every possession. They did that successfully too. We couldn't stop anything.

Reporter: Should you have given up on 3's earlier?

Tovarich: I'm not sure it mattered. I swear we shot 0% in one score situations and I swear they shot 100%. We managed an occasional steal down one score, but rarely and we missed every time. We needed more turnovers. We needed more rebounds. We needed more shooting. We needed more defense. We were just slightly not good enough at anything.

Reporter: What do you do when you're playing tight defense and they score anyway?

Tovarich: Try to double team them. We tried it with Lane, and we tried it with the center, and they were too fast every time.

Reporter: Can you survive another loss?

                          Tovarich: Maybe one.

Your post game quotes are brilliant! Opposite of a box and one! Good season you have going this year. Tough loss to St Marys, I'd imagine you were hoping to win that one.

Tovarich: OK game, better than the last one. We let them hang around with all the 3's. We still struggled from out there. Despite 14 against Dartmouth, our percentage from out there is lacking right now. Back on the road already.

Reporter: Should this team just get the ball in the paint on every possession?

Tovarich: Probably. They are not as inconsistent down low as we are from the outside. That wasn't true for Delaware, so I can't say that's how it goes for everyone, but it should be true more than not.

Reporter: Is Farley contributing enough to remain a starter?

Tovarich: I think about that a lot. He shows some promise here and there. But Spears and Pippen are every bit as inconsistent, so we'll leave it for now. It's not why we lose when we do. And there's no guarantee anyone else would contribute more.

Reporter: How important are the first two on this road trip before Texas Tech? It would be disappointing not to get those two before we go to a top 20 team that will be a tough game.
