Tovarich: Did we have to lose to Portland freaking State to motivate ourselves to play like this?

Reporter: Maybe Rice is just bad?

    Tovarich: So is Portland State.

Reporter: Is Canisius a revenge game?

Tovarich: I'd save revenge for people like Connecticut and Portland State who ran up the score, pressed way up and fired off 3's near the buzzer. Canisius just beat us. So payback? We get them again in 3 weeks or so, so if we lose this one too, then maybe I'll upgrade that next one to revenge-level.

Reporter: How improved were the bigs tonight?

Tovarich: I'm not sure if they did anything differently, or the refs called it differently or Rice didn't just play amazing perfect interior defense. Portland State got 7 blocks, and so did the Air Force, and we only went to the line for a total of 15 FT's. And that stat is usually under-recorded. It was just one tonight and we got to the line 11 times. Maybe if I change all my players names to Mahomes the refs will like us more.

Tovarich: Big guys were great, the outside shooting was pretty dismal. Great FT shooting. 3 good games in a row now. It'll need to be better to beat Baylor. 3-point shots will surely be needed. Rebounding will need to be a bit better too.

      Reporter: Is Baylor a must-win?

Tovarich: Rarely is anything a must win as an Independent, but having a second loss already would really put us behind the 8 ball. A 5th loss might be more than we can get away with, so to only be 3-2 would require probably a 15-game or so winning streak later in the season.

Reporter: What's improved since the opening game?

Tovarich: These last 3 games make that first one even more frustrating. I know Portland State played out of their mind and won't shoot like that again and we'll get revenge on them for running up the score next year, but we couldn't get a stop in that game and it felt pretty out of our control. It happens in basketball. Some team or just a player or two play out of their minds. It's just unfortunate we can't afford for those games to happen against teams we really should beat.

Tovarich: I should thank Baylor coach for his poor strategy there at the end. We were trying our best to let it slip away. We came out with a quick 12-6 start and we're up 16 and it felt good. Then they just gradually chipped away.

Reporter: When you got the block with 54 seconds left up 6, why do you think they didn't foul?

Tovarich: Baffling, especially when you consider they had to foul us 5 times. Then their PG gets 4 fouls and he refuses to foul out, so that was pretty selfish of him. And that all allowed us to run those last 8.6 seconds off after they hit the 3 to make it a one score game.

Reporter: What made you decide to start slowing the game down with 7 minutes to go?

Tovarich: Mainly we had become inept. After the 12 points in 2 or 3 minutes, we couldn't do much right. We didn't make a 3 the last 10 minutes. We only got 6 rebounds after halftime. It's a miracle we dragged that out to make the lead last, though they get a lot of credit for not forcing us to hit any FT's late.

Reporter: You haven't won any of these Alaskan tournaments yet. Would it be a big deal to get one finally?

Tovarich: This field is a lot weaker than Anchorage is, but both times we've run into the lone power school here in the second game because they seem to keep putting us in the same spot in the bracket, so now we should hopefully have an advantage in the championship. Winning our home tournament in a much taller task. That's usually got 4 or 5 power schools in it. We've won some lesser tournaments, but this would be a good step.

Reporter: So was this a must-win?

Tovarich: Now that we won it is. Starting 3-2 would've made about 23 games a must-win. We have a tiny margin for error and this made it a little less tiny.

Tovarich: Nice to jump on them early. I think we got up 36-16 there, and things were fairly boring after that. Things were pretty even. We both clanked a lot of 3's, especially that Messy guy. That's got to be the worst shooting night I've ever witnessed. It was the first time in my life I called for loose defense. Normally I'm imploring everyone to get tight on anyone who can shoot. That guy probably should've just sat down. They must not have many other good options.

Reporter: Usually people pose with the trophy on the table. Where is it coach?

Tovarich: It's with our imaginary NIT trophy from last year. The only way our trophy case ever gets filled is with national championships since we can't win a conference championship either.

Reporter: Was there concern that only the bigs scored on a regular basis tonight?

Tovarich: That's ok when they're pressing all game and we usually end up with a good situation for them. We hit some 3's early, then must have missed our last 7 or 8 there. We remain inconsistent. As long as some aspect of our game, or group of players at a certain position are excelling, we'll work with it.

Tovarich: We were lucky they were so bad in the first half. We didn't exactly light it up either, but it didn't take long to see they got a rousing halftime speech and came out shooting ridiculously. We probably should've slowed that down a little bit more but we hung on.

Reporter: They score to make it a 3-point game with 40 seconds left. Are you surprised they didn't foul?

Tovarich: Yeah, we ran the shot clock down to 1 second and took a 3, so by the time they rebounded it, they maybe had 3 seconds and just a desperation heave. I'd say I'm surprised they didn't make it, but luckily they never caught fire from 3 or I'm sure they would have.

Reporter: Is it good just to survive the first road game of the season with a win?

Tovarich: It's not one of the better road opponents we'll play this year, so that's a little disappointing. Hopefully we're saving a better effort for the two bigger schools on this trip.

Reporter: Did you just play down to the opponent?

Tovarich: The opponent in the second half was better than a lot of ranked teams I've seen in my years. The first half they looked like a 20-loss team, so that can be taken any number of ways.

Reporter: Only 8 rebounds in the second half. Is that because they missed so few shots?

Tovarich: That certainly had a lot to do with it. We were 15-15 at halftime, so we lost the second half 15-8. We got some offensive boards in the first half, but not in the second. They were just a totally different team and we were lucky to be up 14 before it started and that they fumbled the strategy there at the end.

Tovarich: That's the most ridiculous performance I've seen since...2 weeks ago against Portland State. -20 in rebounds was a joke. Like, did they have a magnet in the ball? It's crazy how many times some little guard ran in and outjumped 2 big guys and took the ball. 4 whole rebounds at halftime was the most pitiful half of rebounding I've ever witnessed. It was shocking they ever missed though. We were right in their face, and it was like we weren't there. And they got it back when they did anyway. We missed over 20 times in the paint. The press did a pretty good job getting us back in it. We were down 23? at one point. We got it to 9 three times and all three times, they immediately went on a run to get it back up to 15. It's like they got bored and let us catch up a little and then when it was single digits, they decided to start trying again, like clockwork.

Reporter: Usually you save the power games for later in the season. Is this too soon for a young team?

Tovarich: Yeah, I should know better. And this is the worst power team we play this year. We got another one before we head home. The schedule's frontloaded in terms of quantity, but it needs to be more backloaded in quality until we yet again re-establish a whole new identity when we keep getting younger every year. There aren't many power teams available too late in the year though.

Reporter: Why isn't the rebounding improving?

Tovarich: I might have to read Alaska laws and see if they're actually illegal.

Reporter: Why do you think they unnecessarily dunked the ball with 8 seconds to go?

Tovarich: Seems to be a theme with the teams who beat us. I usually refrain, but maybe I'll stop. We'll have to come take a trip back here I think next season.

Tovarich: I'm not sure if Minnesota just beat us again, or there's just something terminally wrong with us. On paper, that was the worst team on our schedule, but we got killed on the boards again. We miss 3 FT's in the last minute and lose on a jumper with 1 second left. It took 10 tries to take the lead before we finally managed. But it felt the entire time like we just did enough wrong to make sure we were going to lose at the end, and sure enough, we did. You could see it coming. It felt predictable.

Reporter: Is hope for the tournament gone?

                Tovarich: Yes.

Reporter: How do you keep the team motivated?

Tovarich: We're 100% preparing for next season now. Everyone's back except for Spears and Atkinson, unless some unhappy people want to leave. I think Bryan may leave. I'd encourage that. Wolfe is possible. I'd encourage that too.

Reporter: With everyone transferring constantly, how do you ever get an experienced roster together?

Tovarich: Keep recruiting better. Eventually we'll be able to redshirt people, and set up the roster for the long term. For now, it's just getting better talent, and some of the talent we have, we can improve on now that we're getting better at recruiting and theoretically improving as a program, though this season is an obvious setback.

Reporter: So what changes will you make?

Tovarich: I don't know. We have 23 games to experiment, develop the people who are instrumental to the future of the program, etc. Obviously the pathetic rebounding is priority #1. Consistency is obviously something we're incapable of achieving this season. It's supposed to be the most talented roster yet, but it's not working.

Tovarich: That's the kind of response I was hoping for last game.

                    Reporter: Better late than never?

                    Tovarich: So they say.

Reporter: How was it to be on the other side of the high shooting percentage?

Tovarich: All those 3's we hit early were big. They're not built to come from behind. 48-29 at halftime is crazy, that's usually what Tony Bennett's final scores look like.

Reporter: What did you experiment with today?

Tovarich: Not much. We flipped Carbaugh and Riley and let Riley play C on the B team. I was hoping for some better rebounding. We did come out +5, though much of that was late with them firing off 3's as soon as they could. I know there weren't a ton of misses to rebound, so as odd as it is to say, that game was a small sample size for that. Between our hot shooting and their snail-like pace until they were forced out of it, rebounding opportunities were fairly minimal, though you wonder how there were 41 misses from the field and only 35 rebounds for the game.

Reporter: What other experimentation do you have planned?

Tovarich: I have no idea. When I said we were getting ready for next year, it doesn't change much. The 10 in the main rotation are all back next year. Atkinson and Spears at the end of the bench are SR's. I mainly just mean they won't be playing probably. Those minutes are needed to develop other people. We'll try a little bit here and there, but I didn't mean we're going to blow everything up. The 10 guys who play are still the future.

Tovarich: That was some of the most pitiful shooting I've ever seen. That goes for them for a half too. They suddenly improved a lot of after halftime. I guess we did too. We improved from 30% up to 52% in the second half. I've never seen 9 consecutive point blank shots missed. Wilkins going 0-6, I just have no words for. If not for the FT's, I'd have believed it physically impossible for him to put the ball through the rim. That went for Grady too, who started 0-5 lol. He was great after that.

Reporter: Hawaii coach thinks the refs were biased.

Tovarich: Of our 15 FT's, I'd bet 12 of them came on breakaways where we had easy dunks, but making FG's was banned somehow. Whatever had to happen to stop us from making a shot was going to happen and they smartly fouled us from behind on breakaways to see if we could miss the FT's. We'd probably have missed the easy breakaway dunks if they let us. They were jump shot happy, so no foul shots for them isn't surprising. We were lucky they had a bad first half from out there because their 6/10 in the second was getting hard to keep up with.

                      Reporter: How about the rebounding?

Tovarich: We were 20-19 at halftime. That tells you how pitiful the first half of shooting was. They got us 11-8 after, so we could've done better there.

Reporter: So how did you overcome the bad shooting?

Tovarich: Turnovers mainly. +12 turnovers gave us 10 extra shots. They were trying to play too fast. It admittedly did end up with us leaving them open a lot. If they'd hit them in the first half like they did the second, we'd have been run off the court.

Tovarich: Luckily the big guys were much better than the last game, because allowing them to shoot 10/14 on 3's in the second half was embarrassing.

Reporter: Does it matter when you make all your shots and they're way behind?

Tovarich: Yes. I told everyone to stay tight on the outside shooters. It was literally their only offense. It's a bad habit. Just because it didn't matter today doesn't mean it won't later. I'm very unhappy with the perimiter defense.

                        Reporter: How about rebounding?

Tovarich: It didn't feel like we won on the boards. I swear they had at least 4 offensive rebounds in the first half on just 2 possessions. I was surprised to see the stats there. I guess we didn't miss enough shots for them. They pressed early and often and the big guys killed it.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting window is about to end. How's it going?

Tovarich: There won't be anything to report, as usual. We're going for a lot of guys that are out of our league, but don't have offers yet. I expect that will change as soon as the window closes. Then we'll have to cut it down and get a little more realistic but we're shooting for the stars.

Reporter: Usually you play the bench more in blowouts like this?

Tovarich: Other than the big guys, I wasn't really feeling them today. The starters were all playing well, so I let them keep capitalizing on it.

Tovarich: We've pulled a lot of games out with no logical explanation for it, that seemed unlikely. This one wins. When they got the "block" that lead to a breakaway layup with 25 seconds to go to go up 8, I thought there was no chance. Our 3-point shooting had been pitiful. They had been making their FT's. And then they didn't, they got it right back anyway because we can't rebound. So so Crandle to hit a couple 3's, for them to finally miss a FT and us rebound, a big steal, and then to defy everything that had happened up until then, to make the tying basket with 4 seconds to go was unbelievable.

Reporter: How many times do you think you missed the tying or go-ahead shot before that?

Tovarich: It felt like 8 or 9. And usually as soon as we got it down to 2, it would end up right back at 6 as fast as humanly possible. They got careless with the ball there late. I don't know why we suddenly hit 3 3's in a row late when we'd been awful. Rebounding was still pitiful but we got just enough somehow. That Collum guy I am shocked only shot 50%. He seemed like he made everything.

Reporter: You seemed unhappy with the refs.

Tovarich: We were getting hacked in the paint pretty good, really obvious fouls, and they just wouldn't call it most of the time. 6 of our 14 FT's came intentionally in OT.

Reporter: Can this win give you some momentum for this road trip?

Tovarich: I don't think momentum really is a thing. We needed 15 extra shots and some miracles to get to OT today. We can just go shoot 30% in any of these games. This one was unlikely, but we only were in that situation because we were awful, and there's nothing stopping us from being awful again and there not being a miracle at the end.

Reporter: How is the recruiting board looking after the signing period?

                          Tovarich: Blood red as usual.

Tovarich: That wasn't as unlikely a win as the last game, but it's tough to play basketball 5 against 6 when you're already playing poorly in most aspects of the game. Turnovers really saved us for most of that game, and then thankfully their shooting was brutal the last 8 minutes, only scoring 7 points. They struggled at the FT line despite how many attempts they were given, since everything was a foul on us. I know I've been on their end of games where fouls were 13-3, but that's often against a jump shooting team, and we of course took those open 3's for too long against the zone despite how miserable we were at shooting them, but we took a lot of shots in the paint too. It wasn't a lack of aggression. It just felt like bias refereeing from the Big West.

Reporter: Are you worried about being fined for talking about the refs?

Tovarich: Who's going to fine me? The commissioner of the Independent Conference?

Reporter: How'd you like the start of the game?

Tovarich: Jumping out 21-7 was nice. Everything felt good. Then you go to halftime down 1, and you're up 9-0 in turnovers and you're baffled. But rebounds are 22-11 against you. Fouls are 8-1. FT's are 12-2. That's a lot to overcome.

Reporter: How much sooner in retrospect should you have abandoned the 3-point shooting?

Tovarich: 2 of those 5 makes were by Luz in the second half, so we needed those. It's hard to abandon it when they're happily giving them to you. 5-26 is pitiful though. Normally that's a bad strategy. You wonder if they knew we'd shoot like that. We gave up finally there with about 8 minutes to go and started using some clock and getting it into the post. Despite the somewhat low score, that was a crazy fast pace for a while. I don't know why they cooled off and shot 3 of their last 16, but I'm glad for whatever changed. I'm also glad they struggled at FT practice since that's what that was for them. Hopefully we don't see those refs in Long Beach next week. I was ready to break a clipboard and get a technical if that was allowed.

Reporter: Despite all the complaints, it turned out to be an easy win in the end. Is that progress in the maturation of the team?

Tovarich: You'd hope it's coming somewhere. We're semi-young and never seem to get much older. And that'll probably go for next year too. So I know resetting the clock so to speak doesn't help that and the inconsistency is just a fact of life right now until we can miss with the recruits less and build up the depth to where we can redshirt people, but game after next is #16 of 31, so that's the halfway point. I'd rather not make these games so difficult like the last one so we don't have to be mature enough to overcome all this stuff and come back after getting ourselves behind. I'm ready for some more practice at playing from ahead.

Tovarich: There's our playing from ahead practice. It gets an F. It was brutal. From the point we were up 37-11, it was awful. We obviously needed to slow the game down. They pressed on every basket, and we let it speed us up. They played a ton of zone and we took all the 3's, even though we missed 16 of our last 17. I don't think we got one single rebound in the last 5 minutes. I might be exaggerating, but it's hard to remember getting one. We won, and yet, it feels like a loss.

Reporter: Crandle's injury obviously wasn't significant?

Tovarich: No, he was only out a few minutes and he was our leading scorer. He's one of the few whose offense was embarrassing.

Reporter: What will you do differently with a big lead next time?

Tovarich: Obviously stop with the 3's, even when they're playing zone and trying to get us to do it. A lot of the time we'll kill it, but it should've been given up on sooner obviously. We won't let the press speed us up. Maybe we'll get one single rebound somewhere in there. The big guys were above average and we should've gone to them more. Hopefully we're saving all the 3's for next week because it's brutal right now.

Reporter: Are you sure this season is actually over?

Tovarich: Based on all the data so far, 6 losses has no chance of making the tournament. Last season, 5 was borderline. We still have to go to UConn again, we have Texas A&M in a tournament next week and we go to Auburn later. We'd have to win 2 of those 3 and not pull anymore disasters like Portland State and North Dakota State because if you can lose those, then we can literally lose to anyone on the schedule. So I'm not holding my breath.

Tovarich: That was a pretty complete performance. For once, I don't have much to complain about.

Reporter: Are you sure you can't think of something?

Tovarich: We should have saved that kind of performance for the next game?

Reporter: Do you think the complaint about the Big West refs last week played a factor today?

Tovarich: 20-7 FT's for us was pretty nice. It was a far cry from the stripes we had to play against @ Northridge. We'd have overcome it either way today. It wasn't perfect, but we couldn't do much wrong.

Reporter: Why are there so many games where the guards don't score and the bigs account for 80% of the points?

Tovarich: If not for Luz' sharpshooting in the second half, it might have been over 90%. They were in man to man and tight on the guards in the first half. When they switched largely to the 1-3-1 in the second half, we had a lot of open looks. We went to half at 1/5 from 3, and that often reverses itself magically at halftime.
