I wanted to see what kind of hardware coach Tovarich was competing for, and I learned it's an extremely generic looking trophy

?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

I don't know if I've ever won the NIT, even simulating. It'll be embarrassing if it says Madison Square Garden on the trophy on the game.

Tovarich: If you're going to fly 4,000 miles, you may as well stay for a couple games.

Reporter: Did you think you played well or Arkansas played badly?

Tovarich: Probably both. They were very sloppy with the ball. They let a lot of people who aren't the PG handle the ball, and it didn't work out for them. We hit 3's very well. They didn't. It happens to everyone.

Reporter: Was Spears at PG an experiment?

Tovarich: Yeah, you can do that up 30. He's in such a prolonged slump, I just wanted to see if we get him a steal and a breakaway or something, anything to give him a little confidence maybe. We might need some 3's from him to beat Kentucky.

Reporter: Are you sure the game wasn't too close for Herman and Stivers to play?

Tovarich: Might as well let them say they played in a "Final Four" before they go....somewhere, or nowhere. I don't know if anyone else takes transfers from Independents. We're pretty well down the food chain.

Tovarich: I was going to say it's nice to be able to win a trophy, but I'm still waiting for someone to hand it to me. I'm starting to think you don't even get one? Anyway, Kentucky had a rough shooting night. I'll gladly take credit for it. I don't think we had much to do with it. Luz was great hitting 3's in the second half with not much time on the shot clock. We rebounded well. Hopefully we built up some team unity and such and can come back better next year with just about everyone back.

Reporter: What have you learned about what it takes to get to the NCAA tournament?

Tovarich: I think our strength of schedule has been pretty similar every year. 4 losses got us an 8 seed. 6 got us a 4 seed in the NIT. That's not much margin for error. It makes you think you ought to just put a cupcake schedule together and 29-2 will get you in.

Reporter: What do you think is the peak this program can achieve given the location and the conference situation?

Tovarich: National championships are unlikely. Recruiting isn't easy, but we get a little better at it every year. It may be a long time before we know what the peak is. We have a long way to go building up the depth. We haven't gotten to a point where we can redshirt people because we have such a loaded roster. We get younger every year. We'll keep building and see. Just get in the tournament and you might get some favorable matchups.

Reporter: Is there any job you'll leave for?

Tovarich: Nope, this is where I'm retiring.

Reporter: What do you think about next year's schedule, roster, etc?

Tovarich: Herman and Stivers are likely to leave. We'll see who we can get to replace them, if anyone. We have a lot of backup plans there. The schedule is always a mystery. I try to undo as much of what the AD gives me as I can. Hopefully Calhoun doesn't retire, so I can go back to Connecticut and give it another shot.

Feels like you really slowed down the game to beat Kentucky. It worked.

For NCAA tournament berths, I don't know how the game calculates RPI based on your SoS, but it does seem l like it uses RPI to determine at-large tournament bids.

I can't really tell. The bubble teams' RPI are all over the place. I was 53 the first season and not listed on the bubble but I remember some teams in the 60's were. I forgot to check where I ended up because I knew I was out. I ended up 36 after the NIT. Butler is 56 after winning a round of the tournament but got an at-large. Marquette lost in the first round and is 53rd after that but got a 10 seed, same for Nevada at 52.

Finally there was some more extensive coaching carousel data.

Jim Boeheim retired from Syracuse, replaced by Mark Fox from Nevada. Both Syracuse assistants under Boeheim were immediately hired as head coaches (listed as unemployed), by Jackson State and Lipscomb.

Virginia Tech fired Seth Greenberg, replaced by Louis Orr from Bowling Green. Greenberg landed at Texas-Arlington. The assistants follow the head coach when he is directly hired by a new school, but when one is fired, and re-hired, the assistants do not stay attached to him. One of Greenberg's new assistants at Arlington was an assistant for Dave Odom who retired from South Carolina and disappeared for a year. Neither of Greenberg's assistants have been hired this offseason.

Nevada hired their new head coach from Cal Santa Barbara, which had their head coach taken for the second time already-original UCSB coach is at Wake Forest, second UCSB coach was an assistant from St. Joseph's, then UCSB coach for 2 years and now up to Nevada. UCSB hired an assistant from Texas.

College of Charleston coach retired, and was replaced by one of his assistants. The assistant did not retain the second assistant. That one is now an assistant at Bucknell.

Original Grambling coach was nowhere last season and has resurfaced as an assistant at Towson under their new coach who was an assistant at Boston U who hired the fired head coach from American as an assistant.

Boise State coach was fired after season 2 and did not coach last season, was hired by Sacramento State. Sam Houston State coach was fired, and landed at American, but both of his assistants now are assistants under Boise State coach instead.

Jackson State's on their third head coach as well, the first retiring after one season and the Memphis assistant who replaced him was hired by Bowling Green.

Utah Valley State coach was fired, but hired by Iona in an indirect promotion, so his assistants did not follow either. Utah Valley State promoted one of the assistants, but he also did not retain the second assistant and one of his assistants is an original assistant under Boise State coach.

As usual, even Utah Valley State hired C+ assistants, while my only choices were C coaches. Among the available choices for me were original head coaches at Alcorn State and Bethune-Cookman, an assistant from American who was just fired with the head coach, an original Jacksonville State assistant who was fired with the head coach after year 2 and did not coach last year, and freshly fired assistants from Navy and SC Upstate.

Norm Roberts, the original St. John's coach fired after year 2, sat out year 3 and is now an assistant for Coppin State under a previous assistant for Long Beach State. The original Coppin State coach is now an assistant at Kennesaw State under a USC assistant.

The South Carolina Upstate coach who was just fired, is an assistant for....South Carolina Upstate, under Loyola Chicago coach who was just fired, also assisted by Dino Gaudio, the original Wake Forest coach who has sat out 2 years after being fired after year 1. I expect this is the only staff of 3 fired head coaches.

As has been consistent in all 3 offseasons, no assistant coaches had to be replaced due to retirement. All retained head coaches kept their staff in tact 100%

Great data. Virginia Tech is the one that I haven't seen yet I believe. Syracuse, Nevada, and Boise State seem somewhat common a few years in (just like Mark Few to Arizona happens every single time after 1 year).

This one I have Gonzaga in the Mountain West so he's a major coach and won't leave. Mark Few was often the Lute Olson replacement in all of mine. If it wasn't him, it was usually Southern Illinois coach. This one he happened to go to year 2, which is rare, so everything was thrown off and Western Michigan coach got it.

I've been keeping track of everyone's records. Greenberg was 34-54 (18-36 ACC) in 3 years with 3 losing seasons. Todd Lickliter has somehow survived Iowa at 36-56 and 17-31 in the Big 10 though. Gaudio was 9-22 in one year and axed, but Al Skinner was 8-22 at BC and survived. That was wise because BC is 44-25 since. I didn't look into what coaches default job security was though and that must be significant to explain some things. Boeheim was 23-38 his first two seasons before 23-12 last year. St. John's coach was not surprisingly fired going 14-46 in 2 years. Jay John at Oregon State is often fired pretty early, and 24-37 in 2 years wouldn't have surprised me but he may have saved himself with a 19-15 year.

20 losses and more seems like you have a high chance of being axed but there's a lot of randomness. The grade the coach has often seems more important. Oral Roberts coach got promoted to Southern Mississippi after 2 years only being 31-31. Or one good season can propel you. Green Bay went 23-7 so the coach got promoted to Western Michigan. Then to make it more confusing, IPFW coach had a nice first season of 21-11, then went 9-18 but got hired away by Grand Canyon for it.

Tovarich: That's gotta be the best game in the history of Portland State basketball. It was much like the UConn game last year, with the neverending press up 15 in the last minute, firing off a 3 with 9 seconds to go, etc etc. If that clown doesn't get fired, I'll see him in Portland next year.

Reporter: Is it just because your team is young again?

Tovarich: I imagine that's part of why we played badly. We missed a lot of shots. We were awful from 3. We missed a lot of layups. We were our usual level of horrible at rebounding. I don't think it's why they shot 65% though. You'd think they'd cool off after the first half shooting 60% and they actually got better.

Reporter: Why was there no pre-season press conference?

Tovarich: I wouldn't even do these if I didn't have to. I'm just here so I don't get fined.

Reporter: Was there something different to try on defense?

Tovarich: I doubt it mattered. We had no chance in that game. They apparently played the game of their lives. That Weisse guy never averaged 10 ppg in his career and went for 33. The other guard went for 18 which is his career high. He's at 8 ppg for his career.

Reporter: What did you think of the refs?

Tovarich: Obviously from the Big Sky. Twice as many fouls against us as them.

Reporter: What about Riley's FT motion? It looks complicated.

Tovarich: We'll need to fix that or he'll probably never make one as long as he lives.

Reporter: Your assistants look new. Who are they?

                              Tovarich: No idea.

Reporter: Why did you fire the other ones?

Tovarich: These ones seemed a tiny bit better.

Reporter: You said you were going to make the schedule harder.

Tovarich: Yeah, then I saw we were going to get younger yet again. We can only lose 4 games, 5 max. And we're already 0-1.

Tovarich: They had some first game of the season rustiness obviously. They were a turnover machine. We did most things better. It's easy to play up in the second half when they're taking the first 3 they can find. Rebounding is easy when they're not even set in their half court offense before they shoot. Good bounceback.

                                Reporter: Is Riley's injury serious?

Tovarich: Just a sprained ankle that'll linger for a week. He won't miss any time.

Reporter: What's the goal in recruiting?

Tovarich: We need another C. That's goal #1. PG is probably where we can improve the most right now. That might be plan B. I also expect we'll have a whole board of backup plans ready for when someone gets unhappy.

Reporter: Is this the starting lineup you'll stick with?

Tovarich: We'll see. Crandle had a rough day. He shot well against Portland State though. We're experiment with the big guys in different spots. The bench has some of the better outside shooters, so the starters may stay the same, but I might have a quicker trigger getting Pippen or Luz in if we're behind.
