Tovarich: I'd like to have seen what would have happened if their 7 foot center didn't get injured early in the game. That may have gone better for us. Their jumpshooting was Hawaii and New Hampshire-esque. Luckily they were sloppy with the passes. We kind of were too as 7 turnovers for us is pretty high, but since we had such a crazy height advantage, we were able to deflect a ton of passes that were going inside the arc. I don't know why they'd bother passing down in the post or in the paint at all, especially the way they were shooting. All 5 of their guys should have just stood outside the arc and shot it.
Reporter: So what did you learn about your team today?
Tovarich: Not much. It's easy basketball to dump the ball down to the big guys and score on a roster where everyone is 6'7" or shorter. That said, we still managed to miss some. Maybe shooting 100% is too much but when you have 4 guys 6'10" or taller and they defend you with guys 6'6' and 6'7", I actually think it should have been better than the 29/40 the bigs shot. Our perimiter defense must have at least something to do with some of the crazy shooting against us, I just don't know what else to do. I tell the defense to stay tight on guys and they just don't do it. That's probably the main problem.
Reporter: How about rebounding?
Tovarich: Yeah, pitiful as always lol. 14 rebounds for a game? Is that a record low? And we get outrebounded by the shortest team you'll ever see? It's embarrassing.
Reporter: Do you feel like you beat the #2 team in the country?
Tovarich: They barely rate higher than us with their 7 footer. They probably don't without him. They almost beat us shooting 65%. But obviously Bucknell beat them in their opener too. It'll be interesting to see how they deal with such a short roster until their C comes back in 3 weeks. They have a pretty light schedule with a weak Maui Invitational field and FIU before they get him back. I need them to help out my SOS.
Reporter: What do you expect from the tournament in Puerto Rico?
Tovarich: Looks like we got a cupcake opener there. There's a decent possible semifinal and then maybe a big school in the championship. If it turns out to be a lame group of opponents, I'll be upset because I could've gone to Fairbanks if I wanted that.

Tovarich: The score looks nice in the end, but I didn't care for much. Rebounding was its usual level of inept. I thank them for taking way too long to get out of their zone and giving us all those open 3's. They scored way too easily on, especially the big guys. We are usually better on interior defense than that. It's usually the 3-point line we can't guard. Some variety is nice I guess.
Reporter: Why so few minutes for the bench?
Tovarich: Partly, I didn't care for what I saw from them. They were 3/12 overall and 0/4 from 3. They'd come in with a lead and the other team would go on a run immediately. Then partly just bad luck. I tried to sub them in the end of the first half with a little over 3 minutes left and there was never a stoppage until halftime. Then there was 5:48? to go in the game and I subbed out Fleming who was tired and next stoppage I was going to send them and we didn't have one. They just stood there are the scorer's table for the rest of the game. Dillard was pretty lonely down at the other end of the bench from me and the assistants. If I had cared for anything they'd done to that point, I'd have called a timeout to get them in, but their performance left me unmotivated to do it.
Reporter: Will you try to get them going tomorrow?
Tovarich: We'll see how it goes. Whether it's Belmont or Charlotte, they both look like solid teams. We'll need to play better. They'll need to play better to earn more minutes. I'd like someone to get a rebound for once in their life. I don't think anyone's going to be dumb enough to play zone tomorrow, so we won't have so many open 3's to make it look this easy.👍 1Comment
