Week 1 at the Chargers
The Chargers came out passing, but had a 3 and out on their opening drive. A terrible punt gave the Texans the ball in field goal range to start. The drive would go -1 yards, amounting only to a 53 yard field goal try. From the right, Duncan missed it wide left.
Off of that, the Chargers would throw 8 passes in a row moving into field goal range, but getting stopped short for a 30 yard field goal try. Jamal Avery from the left would shank it left, keeping the game scoreless.
The Texans would have a 3 and out. To the 2nd, the Chargers would get sacked out of field goal range and have to punt. The punt would land at the 3 yard line. The Texans run game struggled all day, but they amounted an 11 play drive (7 passes) to get a field goal try. From 46 yards, Duncan from the left hash hit the left goal post. Still 0-0.
On the Chargers next drive, Jahmar Sweeley would make a big interception over the middle, and two long passes later, the Texans were inside the 10. They would let the time tick down as they were at the two minute warning. The first two tries were runs, both short, and then the 3rd down pass try was a sack. Duncan would finally make a kick, from 26 yards, making it 3-0 with 34 seconds left.
The Chargers would complete one big pass, then timeout around midfield. On their 2nd play, they would be sacked, forcing their last timeout. They would complete one to the 36, but would run out of time. 3-0 at halftime.
The Texans would start with it in the 3rd, and move well through the air. 11 plays, 7 passes, 74 yards, getting a 3rd and goal touchdown on a 2 yard pass to Vernon Davis. 10-0.
The Chargers would then have a 3 and out. Once again, the Texans would start in field goal range. But Cody Withers would throw an interception to Mike Best, ending the drive.
The Chargers wouldn't go far, LaDainian Tomlinson would fumble (He had 5 carries all day) forced by Sweeley, and recovered by Nate Branch at the SD 43.
To the 4th quarter, it would take 6 plays for the Texans to add another touchdown, scoring on a QB sneak. 17-0. The Chargers would then put together a 14 play drive, getting as close as the HOU 11, but would end up with a turnover on downs.
After some time ran down, the Chargers would get it back late, and make it all the way to the 1 yard line, but would run out of time. A shutout to start the year, 17-0 final score.
Withers had 16-22, 201, 1 TD, 1 INT. Not liking the INT, but the pass game was solid. Hawkins had a 27 yard run, final total of 52 on 10 (Which looks good until you minus the one good run) Goldwire had 18 on 10.
Dontrell Dillinger was excellent in his debut, 7 catches, 106 yards. Vernon Davis had 5 catches for 43.
Defense would notch 8 sacks against the pass happy Chargers, only Mario Williams would have 2. Rivers was 26-47, 303, 1 INT. Tomlinson had 2 yards on 5 tries. Greg Jennings was their best WR, 11 catches, 146 yards.
Not a bad way to start the season. Buccaneers are up next.
