    The Prowl
    2005 Clemson Tigers
    Volume 1, Issue 1

    Whitehurst is tied for eighth
    in Clemson history in victories
    for a starting quarterback

Clemson, SC - Hoping to continue where they left off in 2004, the new-look Clemson Tigers are looking to become bowl eligible for the seventh straight season. In '04, the Tigers finished 6-5 overall and an even 4-4 in the conference. This year, however, they'll be striving for greatness in an even tougher ACC Conference, as the addition of Boston College to the league will only add more depth to an already strong conference.

Leading the offensive charge for Clemson will be fourth-year starter Charlie Whitehurst, who has often been mentioned among the always-growing list of Heisman hopeful's. Whitehurst passed for just over 2,000 yards last season, and will try to duplicate those numbers in 2005. The senior quarterback isn't without change going into his final season, though, as new offensive coordinator Rob Spence joins the Clemson coaching staff in hopes of bringing more firepower to the program. Joining Whitehurst in the backfield will be Junior runningback Reggie Merriweather, Senior Duane Coleman, and highly-touted Freshman James Davis. Merriweather led the Tigers in rushing last season, but Head Coach Tommy Bowden isn't willing to just hand him the starting spot just yet.

"Oh, he's definitely going to have to earn it. Duane's hungry for that spot, I mean, he was our leading rusher in 2003 before Reggie stepped up last year. He'd love to have the starting job back," started Bowden. "Don't rule out (James) Davis, though, either. We're lucky to have signed him, he's one hell of an athlete. He's been lookin' good out here so far, but we'll have to see what the rest of these practices have to say for these three guys."

Last year's best wideout, Airese Currie, bolted for the NFL after leading the ACC in receiving in 2004. That leaves impact wide receiver, Chansi Stuckey, to be Whitehurst's main target through the air. Stuckey definitley has the playmaking ability to thrive in the ACC, but only time will tell how the junior speedster will fair. Joining Stuckey in the receiving corps are Kelvin Grant and Curtis Baham.

Although their defense is nothing to write home about, the Tigers feel confident that their new defensive coordinator, Vic Koenning can bring the training needed to be effective in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference. Certainly his most talented players on the defensive side of the ball are defensive end Charles Bennett and free safety Jamaal Fudge. Both will be chasing All-ACC Honors this season.

"Those two are leaders of our entire team, not just our defense. Both are seniors, and should provide leadership on and off the football field," stated Koenning.

Although a few practices remain before the real season starts, the Clemson Tigers are eager to begin their season at home against the 25th ranked Texas A&M Aggies.

Sam Keller and Arizona State were stunned
by Temple in their season opener, 38-35

The Clemson Tigers had a bye in Week One, but there was one game for college football fans to feast their eyes upon; Temple at Arizona State.

The Sun Devils went into the contest heavily favored, almost cracking the Top 25 in the preseason polls. They were facing a team in Temple who had never been a national power in football, and definitely wasn't looking to change that this season. However, the Owls hit the field with something to prove against Arizona State, matching them score for score.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the game knotted at 35, the Owls held possession. With under a minute left in the contest, Temple kicker Ryan Lux hit a 35-yard field goal, putting the Sun Devils in a very bad position. Sam Keller was unable to lead the highly-touted Arizona State offense down the field, and the Pac-10 power fell in Week One of the season, 38-35.

                    The Prowl
                    Clemson Shocks Aggies, 51-31

                    Volume 1, Issue 6

TAMU QB Reggie McNeal was outstanding against Clemson, but
his efforts weren't enough. The Tigers put away the Aggies by 20 points

Clemson, SC - Coming into the game, nobody expected the Tigers to be very competitive for the very athletic Aggies. However, with doubt in the heads of thousands of Clemson fans, the hometown team stepped up.

In an offensive attack led by QB Charlie Whitehurst and HB James Davis, the Tigers were able to put up 51 on the scoreboard against the average Texas A&M defense. Whitehurst finished the game with a 50% completion percentage and 291 yards. The real story of Clemson's offense wasn't Whitehurst's performance, though, it was that of freshman James Davis. The youngster was getting his first collegiate start, and came through in a big way, putting up 277 yards against the Aggies. Davis found the endzone three times on the day, capped off by an 80-yard run straight up the gut of the defense.

On the other side of things, Reggie McNeal definitely gave the Clemson defense fits. The scrambling phenom was able to hit any receiver he wanted to in perfect stride, racking up 373 passing yards on the day. McNeal hooked up with receiver DeQwan Mobley for three touchdowns, and later threw another.

When all was said and done, the Clemson Tigers walked away victorious over 25th ranked Texas A&M. The 51-31 victory more than makes up for the loss suffered last season to the Aggies, and Clemson is looking to build on that momentum next week.
