Re: Oregon Ducks
A Hero is Born in Eugene
Ducks Overcome Astronomical Odds
Eugene, OR- The #2 USC Trojans walked into Autzen Stadium confident with their team, the #1 offense and #4 defense in the entire nation. They took the tough crowd out early and gained a huge lead, but Oregon chipped away and then broke free late in the game. Oregon star QB, Kellen Clemens was benched after the first half, he was making poor decisions and wasn't helping the team out, so Dennis Dixon got the rest of the game to show what he was worth. Dixon is a more agile quarterback with great speed to avoid the pass rush and get out of the backfield if needed, and that helped against the tough USC defense. The USC Offense had no trouble against the Ducks through the first 3 quarters of play, Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart led the charge and were almost perfect against Oregon. Matt Leinart was 11/19 for 178 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception. Reggie Bush was unstoppable for most of the game, rushing 12 times for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns. The second half could go down as one of the most entertaining halves of all time, the Ducks trailed 28-7 and USC scored first to make it 35-7. Oregon railed back with a Dennis Dixon scramble to make it within 21 again and a collapse in the secondary for Oregon caused a 64 yard touchdown pass to silence the crowd and perhaps clinch a victory.
Oregon's fourth quarter play was incredible, the defense stopped USC every possession and the offense executed flawlessly. Whitehead scored first in the fourth quarter to bring Oregon within 2 touchdowns. Dennis Dixon got another scramble touchdown to bring Oregon within 7. The defense hunkered down and stopped USC on 3 plays to force a punt, which Tom Malone pinned inside the 20. Cornerback Terrell Thomas of USC slipped on the first play for Oregon which led Dennis Dixon to pass deep to Demetrius Williams who caught it and outran Scott Ware to score and tie the game. Oregon once again stopped USC in 3 plays and got the ball back with 55 seconds. The USC defense was had Oregon go three plays and out but Oregon didn't settle for a punt, they ran a fake punt to throw off the USC D and they got the first down. The Trojans still wouldn't allow any passes to be completed and Paul Martinez has a good leg, but 52 yards is out of his range. So, Dennis Dixon ran a QB Draw with 10 seconds left and ran 13 yards down the sideline to set up a 39 yard field goal for Paul Martinez. The Autzen crowd was going nuts and the noise was deafening, Martinez was easily rattled by the noise, but he was able to get the kick up without trouble and kicked it straight down the middle. The Oregon Ducks had pulled off the miracle win over the Trojans, 45-42.
Scoring Summary
First Quarter- USC, 29 yard run by Bush (XP Good); 4:42
- USC, 25 yard pass from Leinart to Jarrett (XP Good); 1:57
