    UW-Green Bay Career Legacy - CB2K3 (Xbox)

I decided to start my Career Legacy in College Basketball 2K3 with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) Phoenix. They are a member of the nine team Horizon League (Butler, Cleveland State, Detroit, Illinois-Chicago, Loyola-Chicago, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Wright State & Youngstown State).

UWGB was looking for a young coach who could take them back to the level of play they enjoyed under head coach Dick Bennett in the 1990s. Coach Bennett directed the Phoenix to their first three NCAA Tournament appearances in school history, including a first-round upset of California in 1994 for the team’s first ever tournament win.

To lead this new charge, UWGB is looking to 33-year-old, first-time Division I head coach Britton Davenport. The school is expecting big things for the future, but is just hoping to reach .500 this season as the program adjusts to the new coaching style.

    Meet the 2002-2003 UWGB Phoenix:

Re: UW-Green Bay Career Legacy - CB2K3 (Xbox)

Important public announcement: Due to unforeseen construction difficulties, the UWGB Phoenix will not be playing in the brand new Resch Center this season after all. All games have been moved back to the team’s previous home for the last 33 years, Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena. We regret any inconvenience this has caused our fans and hope to have the facility ready for play for future seasons. For now, please continue to enjoy venerable old Brown Arena, where the Phoenix have enjoyed a 357-99 home court record overall.

11/30/02 - The UWGB Phoenix headed into the season with a lot of enthusiasm under new head coach Britton Davenport. This energy spread from the team to the fans as the two fed off of each other in a big upset over the Big Ten’s own University of Wisconsin Badgers, 73-65. UWGB managed the win despite a huge night for Badgers center Donta Burleson, who scored 31 points to go along with 16 rebounds on 15-of-18 shooting. Burleson was joined in double figures by SF Jerry Mason, who had 16 points on the evening. UWGB was led by PF Steve Waller, a Junior, who scored 23 points and had 6 rebounds, shooting 11-for-13 from the floor. The supporting cast was strong for the Phoenix, with C E.F. Matthews gathering 17 points and 14 rebounds, followed by SG Billy Hutchinson who had 16 points. UWGB shot 57.4% from the floor to the Badgers’ 50%.

12/3/02 – Fresh off their first big win of the season, UWGB played host to the Chicago State Cougars, who came in at 0-2 on the young season. Both teams had trouble finding the net in this contest, with UWGB struggling to a 53-38 win. The Phoenix shot a miserable 38.7%, but the Cougars managed to do even worse with only 33.3% from the floor. UWGB received another big game from C E.F. Matthews who had a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. SF Oscar Rogers was the only other Phoenix with double figures, he had 13. Chicago State was paced by PF Thomas Harmon, scoring 12 points to go along with 15 rebounds.

12/7/02 – Momentum seemed to be building for 2-0 UWGB, but the home court party was spoiled by the Wildcats of Kansas State, who came in and pulled out a 66-59 win over the Phoenix. Both teams managed to make 27 field goals, but Kansas State iced the win by making eight more free throws than UWGB. The Phoenix received two double-doubles on the night, one from C E.F. Matthews with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and one from PF Steve Waller with 15 points and 10 boards. SG Billy Hutchinson was 2-of-7 from 3-point range and had 12 points. Kansas State got 15 points from PF Bert Perry and 14 points, 13 rebounds from C Daryl Russell.

Next up – a 12/9/02 visit to Mizzou.

Re: UW-Green Bay Career Legacy - CB2K3 (Xbox)

12/9/02 – The first road trip of the season for UWGB started in a tough place to play, at Norm Stewart Court against the Missouri Tigers. The Phoenix fell behind early but battled back in the second half to put a scare in the Tigers, only to run out of steam and lose the game 63-51. C E.F. Matthews once again pulled off a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. SF Oscar Rogers played another solid game and just missed a double-double of his own, settling for 17 points and 9 rebounds. C James Jackson was dominant for Missouri, posting 19 points, 16 rebounds and 5 steals.

12/14/02 – Showing some signs of fatigue from the tough loss at Missouri, UWGB started off slowly against the 2-2 Wildcats of Weber State. Falling behind early again, somehow the Phoenix found a way to take control of the game and win a hard-fought game on the road 56-54. The difference seemed to be tougher defense for UWGB, shooting 46.2% while holding Weber State to only 37.5% from the floor. The Phoenix showed a balanced attack, getting 14, 13 and 12 points respectively from C E.F. Matthews, PF Steve Waller and SF Oscar Rogers. Waller also pulled down 11 rebounds. The Wildcats also showed some balance as they were paced by SF Rob Bush and his 18 points, followed by C Israel Hill with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and PG Charles Wilson with 10 points, 8 assists.

12/21/02 – Game 6 for the 3-2 UWGB Phoenix was a welcome one as they were able to return home to the comfort of their usual surroundings. The 1-6 Illinois-Chicago Flames tried their best not to cooperate, however, as they nearly stunned UWGB, losing a close game 56-53. This was an important game, as it was the first within the Horizon League for both teams. Had the Flames not committed 19 turnovers (to UWGB’s 10), they certainly could have pulled out a win. UWGB once again saw C E.F. Matthews (15 points), PF Steve Waller (14 points) and SF Oscar Rogers (12 points) lead the team in scoring. The Flames received 10 points each from C Elijah Price, PF Jevon Crawford and SF Nick Waters. It was certainly a battle of the frontcourts in this game, with UWGB’s proving to be just a little bit better.

12/23/02 – The UWGB Phoenix (4-2, 1-0) were looking to head into their short Christmas break on a high note, traveling into Panthers country with a game at Northern Iowa. The Panthers were not in the giving mood, as it turns out, as they pounded the Phoenix 59-41. UWGB showed very little discipline in their shooting, managing a horrendous 25.4% from the floor. They also lost the rebound battle 46-32. The only bright spot for the team was the continued good play of SF Oscar Rogers and C E.F. Matthews. Rogers led the team with 15 points while Matthews scored 12 points, also adding 10 rebounds and 3 steals.

Next up - the Christmas break and then a home date with Austin Peay.

Keep the legacy updates coming. I'm passing my time until I can get home from work and play the game myself.

You have Northern Michigan on your schedule. Are they in the game? What conference?
Fun Fact: Every Tom Izzo recruiting class has played in a Final Four.

My mistake on Northern Michigan. They are not on the schedule in the game. I took the schedule off of ESPN.com on the UWGB page, figuring they'd be the same. Is Northern Michigan a Div II school or something, or Div I-A? They're not in the game, so my guess is they're not Div I. But then maybe they're just too small to include?

No, I'm not really a fan of UWGB. I did pull for them back in the tournament years, but just because they were an underdog. I took them in the Career Legacy mostly because they're supposed to have a decent team this year, and had some of the better talent of the teams available to start with. Plus they've got that cool logo.

I'm through Game 15 now, so I'll try and get some more game recaps posted soon. Thanks for the interest!

Hey nickb, are YOU a UWGB fan, and do you have the game? If so, can you tell me if that's the new Resch Center they have, or if it's old Brown County Arena? They call it Brown County Arena, so I figure maybe they just didn't get the Resch Center into the game. But it looks too nice to be the old place. Maybe it's a licensing issue and they couldn't call it by the actual name. Do you know which it is?

Its the BCA they dont have the Resch Center yet. Although the arena is pretty close to the BCA. A fan of UWGB...Those are kinda hard to find, UWGB isnt my favorite team but I try to keep up with them because their head coach was an assistent at Marquette last year, and if you couldnt tell Marquette is my favorite team.

Okay, thanks. I figured they probably just didn't get it in the game since it's new. I had a heck of a time finding any pictures of it finished on the inside to verify which it was. Did you see my little public announcement regarding the arena?

12/27/02 - The UWGB Phoenix returned from the Christmas break refreshed and ready to play host to the Austin Peay Governors. The Phoenix used a combination of tough defense and rebounding along with a strong inside offense to defeat the Govs 64-53. Austin Peay managed only 37.1% from the floor and was outrebounded 45-31. The Phoenix enjoyed a 44-28 advantage on points in the paint. Leading UWGB with a huge game was C E.F. Matthews, scoring 19 points and grabbing a whopping 17 rebounds. SF Oscar Rogers had 15 points, 10 rebounds and PF Steve Waller scored 14 points with 9 rebounds. C Frank Becker led the Govs with 12 points and 9 boards.

12/28/02 - The new year started on an exciting note for UWGB as the Phoenix beat the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens in a thriller, 49-47. The win raised UWGB's record to 5-3 on the season. UWGB trailed by four points with four minutes left in the game, but were able to rally and gain the victory. Sophomore SG Billy Hutchinson was the hero for the Phoenix, nailing a jumper with 2.2 seconds on the clock to break a 47-47 tie. C E.F. Matthews was the only Phoenix player in double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Delaware got 15 points and 8 rebounds from SF C.J. Barker, with C Steveroy Prince adding a solid all-around game - 9 points, 15 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocked shots.

1/2/03 - UWGB began a three-game road trip with a determined, come-from-behind win over the Cleveland State Vikings 55-48. The Phoenix, trailing 44-43 in the second half, broke off an 8-0 run to take a 51-44 lead with 1:13 remaining in the game. That 8-0 run was part of a 12-4 advantage that closed the game and sealed UWGB’s second Horizon League win in as many games. C E.F. Matthews, who only had 2 points at halftime, finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds. SF Oscar Rogers added 17 points and 5 boards. PG Eddie Robbins scored 14 points for the Vikings, while SF Keith Callans added 11.

1/4/03 - UWGB improved to 2-0 on the current road trip and boosted their record to 7-3 overall (3-0 in the Horizon League) with a 60-54 win over the Detroit-Mercy Titans. The Phoenix shot 48.3% to the Titans' 40%. SG Billy Hutchinson was the spark at the end of this game, scoring on a driving layup with :59 remaining to give UWGB a 58-54 lead. The Phoenix closed by scoring the game's final six points. C E.F. Matthews tallied 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the team, hitting on 10 of 15 shots. Other notables were SF Oscar Rogers with 19 points, 5 rebounds and PF Steve Waller with 12 points 6 rebounds. Detroit-Mercy was led by SF Don Gross with 14 points and 4 rebounds, while teammate C Ted Erwin contributed 9 points and 15 rebounds.

1/7/03 - In the season's most exciting game to date, UWGB dropped the final game of their road trip to the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 64-61. The Phoenix started out hot, opening the game on a 12-4 run and extended that to 18-8 with 6:43 left in the 1st half on a highlight reel, one-handed tomahawk jam by SF Oscar Rogers. UWGB led 33-26 at halftime after shooting 51.8% in the 1st half. The Eagles fought back in the 2nd half, however, and tied the game 57-57 on a driving layup and foul for a three point play by backup PG Duncan Holt with 2:02 to play. This play started a tense, exciting sequence of baskets by both teams. The Phoenix answered Holt's play with a driving layup of their own by SG Billy Hutchinson, regaining the lead 59-57. That lead was short-lived as the Eagles knotted the score once again 59-59 on a tip-jam by C Seth Meyer with 1:20 remaining. C E.F. Matthews scored on the next possession for UWGB, hitting a foul line jumper with :59 to go. However, starting PG Roger Anderer hit a turnaround jumpshot with 45.9 seconds left to once again deadlock the game at 61. In an attempt to feed the ball inside to Matthews the Phoenix committed a dangerous turnover, only to have Eastern Michigan come back and miss a baseline jumper, losing the rebound battle to UWGB. The Phoenix called time out to set up a play for the winning shot, but PG Blair Abbott was called for 5 seconds closely guarded before the play could develop. This mistake proved costly, as the Eagles delivered the knockout blow on a 3-pointer by Anderer with 5.1 seconds left on the clock. Hutchinson had time to get off a rushed 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot clanged off the rim and the dejected Phoenix headed to the locker room with a tough loss and a missed opportunity. Matthews led UWGB with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Anderer paced Eastern Michigan with 22 points of his own.

1/11/03 - UWGB analyzed the previous loss for four agonizing days before they could take the court in an attempt to redeem themselves. The Loyola-Illinois Ramblers came to town and dashed those hopes, holding UWGB to 36.9% shooting in a 53-52 win. The loss dropped UWGB to 8-5 overall, 3-1 in the Horizon League. The Rambers improved to 10-8, 3-2. The four days off left the Phoenix rusty, managing only 25.7% shooting in the 1st half and trailing 28-18. For the second consecutive game the contest came down to trading baskets in the final minutes. UWGB tied the game 46-46 with 2:46 to go on a jumper by PG Blair Abbott. A few minutes later SG Billy Hutchinson gave the Phoenix a lead 50-49 with only 56 seconds to go. The Ramblers were able to answer and take a 51-50 lead on an inside jump shot by PG Roberto Collison with 42.9 seconds left. Hutchinson took the ball and drilled a short jumper with 29.2 remaining for a 52-51 lead. After a time out, Loyola-Illinois called Collison's number and he responded with a layup with 19.7 seconds on the clock and a 53-52 advantage. Feeling that Hutchinson had the hot hand after his previous two scores, Coach Davenport asked his SG for one more basket. Hutchinson got a great look at a short jump shot but could not deliver this time, missing with 7 seconds left. The rebound went to the Ramblers to seal the win. C E.F. Matthews, the model of consistency this season, contributed 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals in the losing effort. SF Cecil Moody and PF Barry Thomas both had 13 points for Loyola-Illinois.

1/18/03 - Taking the court with renewed determination after two tough losses, UWGB bounced back and forced 24 turnovers in a 55-46 win over visiting UW-Milwaukee. The Phoenix held a 27-20 lead at halftime and were able to extend that lead by two points for the final margin. UWGB had three players in double figures in scoring led by SF Oscar Rogers with 14 points, followed by SG Billy Hutchinson and PF Steve Waller both with 10. PG Kirby Robinson had 11 points to lead the Panthers. The win pushed UWGB to 9-5, 4-1 on the season and dropped UW-Milwaukee to 9-6, 3-3.

1/23/03 - In a Horizon League showdown between the two first-place teams, UWGB ran out early and held on late to beat the Wright State Raiders 51-47. Both teams entered the game 4-1 in the Horizon League. The Raiders took the floor this evening with every player sporting a white headband in a show of team unity. It was the Phoenix who showed team unity after tip-off, however, exploding to an 18-5 lead and forcing a time out by Wright State with 9:25 left in the 1st half. That time out seemed to help settle the Raiders, who closed the gap to 29-21 at halftime. The second half proved to be a hard-fought battle with the two teams nearly even in most categories by game's end. The Phoenix led in the most important category, though - the final score. Balance was the key in this game for UWGB, showing four players in double figures. This group was led by C E.F. Matthews and his 13 points, the three others contributing 12 points each. Wright State was carried by C Joe Murray who exploded for 24 points, 19 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

                          Next up: 1/25/03 vs Butler!

1/25/03 - Entering Week 12 of the season, the UWGB Phoenix were trying to position themselves to retain their #1 seeding in the Horizon League standings so they could carry that momentum toward the conference tournament. They got off to a slow start against the visiting Butler Bulldogs, but finished strong in the second half and secured a 66-59 win. The first half ended with the Phoenix trailing 35-32, but they gained some momentum going into the break from the shooting of SG Billy Hutchinson. Hutchinson hit three straight baskets to close the half, including two 3-pointers. The second one just beat the halftime buzzer. For the game UWGB shot 52.6% from the floor, their second-best performance of the season (57.4% vs Wisconsin). SF Oscar Rogers led the Phoenix with 18 points, with Hutchinson and C E.F. Matthews both collecting 14. Butler received 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks from C Brent Lowe.

1/29/03 - Once again setting out on the road, UWGB was able to pull away in the second half to defeat Youngstown State 51-40 for the team's 12th win. The game was close at halftime with the Phoenix up only 25-24. However, a 10-0 run midway through the second half gave UWGB a 39-33 lead with 6:58 remaining. The run was capped with two straight dunks by PF Steve Waller, who had 8 points and 10 rebounds for the Phoenix. The two teams battled evenly for the next five minutes, with the Penguins even managing to close the gap a little. But UWGB took control of the game with 1:21 remaining when C E.F. Matthews jammed home a rebound on a missed 3-pointer by SG Billy Hutchinson. Matthews and Hutchinson had 12 and 9 points, respectively, and SF Oscar Rogers contributed 11. PG Troy Wooten led the Penguins with 16 points.

2/1/03 - The next stop for the Phoenix (12-5, 7-1) was in Chicago to play the Illinois-Chicago Flames, a team they beat 56-53 back in Week 6. This result was decidedly more lopsided, as UWGB pounded the Flames 82-62. The Phoenix started hot and stayed that way, shooting an eye-opening 63.3% from the floor in the 1st half, yet they only led 40-35 at the break. It was a 12-0 run in the second half that put UWGB up 72-48 with 6:13 remaining that essentially sealed the win. The Phoenix were even able to get some valuable playing time for their reserves, clearing the bench with 4:52 left in the game. SF Oscar Rogers had a season-high 22 points to lead Phoenix scorers, with C E.F. Matthews adding 20. C Elijah Price was high-scorer for the Flames with 22 points.
