Morehead, KY (AP) – The Morehead State Eagles used a 17-5 run in the second half to take their first lead of the game at the 1:11 mark, then hit their free throws down the stretch as the Eagles defeated Southeast Missouri State 64-59 Thursday night at Johnson Arena. Point guard Brandon Callahan led all scorers with 16 points.
“This game was simply a tale of two halves,” said Coach Whitt. “In the first half, we couldn’t hit water if we fell out of a boat. We couldn’t hang on to the ball. We couldn’t do anything right. In the second half, we started hitting some threes, we forced some turnovers and we got to the line. Still couldn’t hit water if we fell out of a boat, but we did a ton of damage from the line tonight. Plus we got a solid contribution from our bench.
Senior guard Terrick Willoughby led the Redhawks tonight with 15 points. Junior point guard Paul Paradoski chipped in with 10.

Morehead State (9-9, 7-5 OVC)
Morehead, KY (AP) – The last three games have showed that the Eagles can play in the second half and could be signs that this young team may be starting to gel. After getting down early once again, the Eagles used a strong second half to pull out their second straight game, and five of the last seven, as the Eagles defeated the Eastern Illinois Panthers 67-63, avenging an earlier loss to the Panthers.
“It’d be nice if we could put together two halves of basketball,” said Coach Whitt. “But a win is a win and we’ll take it. We didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half, but unlike the first time around against this team, we got hot in the second half. The difference in this second game compared to the first game was that we forced turnovers and got some easy baskets, something we couldn’t do when we played this team back in December.”
Junior guard Jamyron Steward continued his Jekyll and Hyde ways, this time leading the Eagles with 15 points. Senior big man Shaun Williams also had 15 points.
The Panthers were led by junior guard Julio Anthony, who scored a game high 23 points, 18 of those coming in the first half.
Next week, the Eagles will split their two games at Johnson Arena and on the road. They will first travel to the Eblen Center in Cooksville, Tennessee to take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. In their previous meeting in Morehead, MSU defeated the Golden Eagles 79-67. The Eagles will then host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Johnson Arena. In their previous meeting, the Eagles defeated the Colonels 63-46 at McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

Tennessee Tech (9-10, 8-5 OVC)
Cooksville, TN (AP) – It was a battle between two of the better point guards in the conference, and unfortunately for the Morehead State Eagles, Brandon Callahan lost both the battle and the war. Callahan led the Eagles with 27 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles defeated MSU in a very exciting game, 76-73. The Golden Eagles were led by junior point guard Anthony Fisher, who scored a game high 32 points.
“Fisher was just hot tonight,” said Coach Whitt. “I think he only missed like four shots. I mean it was unreal. And despite having a player like that dominate the game; we were able to stay with them. But in the end, we let them get to the foul line too often and that was the difference in the game.”
Despite the domination by Fisher, MSU had the ball in the closing seconds with a chance to send the game to overtime after Belton Rivers missed the front end of a double-double for the Golden Eagles. Unfortunately, Callahan was on the bench because he fouled out, and Quentin Pryor missed the contested three.

Morehead State (10-10, 8-6 OVC)
Morehead, KY (AP) – Jamyron Steward continued his Jekyll and Hyde ways tonight. This time though, Jekyll showed his face instead of Hyde. Steward was on fire, scoring a game high 29 points including five three pointers as the Morehead State Eagles defeated rival Eastern Kentucky 76-59.
“This was a huge win for us tonight,” said Coach Whitt. “The last thing we want to do at this point in the year is to lose both games in a week. Jamyron was on fire tonight, and our defense completely put the clamps on EKU in the second half. We did a good job of forcing turnovers, and when we do that, nine times out of ten, we win.”
Shaun Williams recorded another double-double for the Eagles, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 boards. Point guard Brandon Callahan scored 19 of his own and dished out eight assists.
The Colonels had four players in double figures, led by Mike Rose and Jamaal Douglas, each scoring 14 points. The Colonels however were unable to overcome their 25 turnovers in tonight’s game.
With six games remaining in the OVC season, the Eagles currently find themselves sitting in third place, which is normally considered a comfortable position in conference play. Not this year. The Eagles are only a game and a half up on 9th place Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles have a slim margin of error, the Eagles record against their upcoming opponents is 2-4, and only two of their remaining six games will be in the friendly confines of Johnson Arena. It’s a tough road ahead for the Eagles.
Next week, the Eagles will take to the road to take on the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks and the Murray State Racers. The Eagles won their previous meeting over the Redhawks in Johnson Arena, winning by a final score of 64-59. The Eagles lost to the Racers back in December at Johnson Arena by a margin of 79-67.

Cape Girardeau, MO (AP) – The people who showed up at the Show Me Center tonight saw a very exciting game of basketball, as the Morehead State Eagles and the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks were involved in a track meet. The Redhawks’ Terrick Willoughby scored a game high 35 points, but it wasn’t enough as four Eagles scored in double figures to hang on to the 86-80 victory.
“Tonight’s performance was the perfect example of team play,” said Coach Whitt. “Offensively, we shared the ball and our defense forced a lot of turnovers. Defensively, we let two guys go off on us, but we put the handcuffs on the rest of their team. But this was an important win for us tonight, but at this point in the season, they are all important.”
Quentin Pryor led the Eagels with 21 points. Brandon Callahan, Jamyron Steward, and Shaun Williams also scored in double figures, scoring 20, 18, and 16 points respectively. Vincent Crutcher grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.
The Eagles build a ten point lead in the second half, but the Redhawks were willed back into the game by Willoughby, who didn’t miss a single shot in the second half. The Redhawks took a six point lead late in the second half, but the Eagles were able to go on a run, and were able to hit enough shots down the stretch to hang on to the victory.

Murray, KY (AP) – It was a tale of two teams going in two different directions. For the Eagles, they’ve been on a roll, winning seven of their last ten. For the Racers, after starting 5-0 in conference play, they have gone 2-9 since. This isn’t the same Eagles team that lost to the Racers earlier in the year, just like this isn’t the same Racers team that thumped the Eagles 79-67. Tonight, MSU proved why they have won seven of their last ten.
Team basketball was the name of the game, as once again, the Eagles had four players in double figures, led by Jamyron Steward and Shaun Williams, who each scored a game high 20 points, as the Eagles defeated the Racers 81-70.
“You can’t game plan for turnovers, but they have been the key for these last three wins,” said Coach Whitt. “Forcing turnovers allows us to run and leads to easy baskets. Those easy baskets allow us to get into our full court press and the cycle continues. Murray went on a run in the second half like we thought they would, but we had simply built too big a lead for them to overcome. To come in here and beat Murray like we did tonight is a testament to how underrated this team was in the beginning of the year.”
The Racers were paced by Shawn Witherspoon, who scored 15 points.
Next week, the Eagles will play their final two regular season home games, as they host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and the Samford Bulldogs. The two teams beat the Eagles in mid-January down in Alabama, the Gamecocks winning their meeting 70-66 while the Bulldogs thumped MSU 73-48.
