    Nats Comeback on Braves Again
Atlanta coughed up the lead late to lose the game
    Nationals 5, Braves 4

Chad Cordero closed the door in the 9th for the save

Washington D.C. -- Again, things looked perfect for Atlanta against the lowly Nationals. A four run lead and the offense rolling at a smooth pace, and Chuck James was on the hill throwing strikes. Then the dam burst and the Braves bent over and took it like... well, use your imagination.

The Nationals, behind Ryan Church, scored five runs in the sixth inning, and eventually won by the score of 5-4. Washington starter, Shawn Hill, got the victory despite giving up thirteen hits and three earned runs on the afternoon.

    WP: Shawn Hill (1-1) - 6.2 IP, K, 13 H, 3 ER
    LP: Chuck James (1-1) - 5 IP, 2 K, 5 H, 3 ER
    S: Chad Cordero (2)

    Jeff Francoeur - 2-4, 2B, RBI
    Scott Thorman - 2-3, 2B, RBI
    Chuck James - 2-2, 2 RBI

    Ryan Church - 2-3, HR (1), 2 RBI
    Felipe Lopez - 1-4, 3B
    Nick Johnson - 1-4, 2B

    Record: 7-5

Braves' Skid Continues; Nats Win Again
Mark Redman has solid outing, but Atlanta offense putters
      Nationals 6, Braves 2

Ryan Zimmerman finished the day 3-4 with a double

Washington D.C. -- The Braves were supposed to be back in 2007. The offense was solid in '06, but the pitching let the team down. This year, it appears that it may be the exact opposite. Mark Redman couldn't have done much better, as the lefty struck out twelve in just seven innings, but Atlanta's offense managed to score only two runs off of mediocre pitching.

Not to take anything away from the Nationals, though, as they played a solid ball game. Nick Johnson clobbered his first dinger of the young season, and Ryan Church went yard yet again against the Bravos. Former Brave, Ray King, nailed down the victory with his first save of the season.

      WP: Matt Chico (2-0) - 7.2 IP, K, 11 H, 2 ER
      LP: Mark Redman (0-1) - 7 IP, 12 K, 5 H, 3 ER
      S: Ray King (1)

      Kelly Johnson - 2-5, RBI
      Edgar Renteria - 3-5
      Jeff Francoeur - 3-4
      Craig Wilson - 2-4, 2B

      Nick Johnson - 2-4, HR (1), 2 RBI
      Ryan Zimmerman - 3-4, 2B
      Ryan Church - 2-4, HR (2), 3 RBI

      Record: 7-6

The Tailspin Continues; Atlanta Drops to .500
Late comeback attempt comes up short for the Braves
        Braves 5, Cubs 7

Aramis Ramirez drove in four runs against Atlanta

Atlanta, GA -- For about the 1,000th time this season, the Braves fell behind early in this contest. Chicago's Aramis Ramirez opened up the scoring with a three-run bomb that nearly cleared everything in the first inning. A couple of innings later, Ramirez would add another homerun to make things 4-0.

In the fifth inning, the Braves actually managed to put a few hits together. Kelly Johnson doubled in a run, and Atlanta actually looked like they could put up a fight. The sixth inning rolled around, and Andruw Jones went big fly to tie up the ball game at five apiece.

The very next inning, the Cubbies answered with two more runs, and the score would remain 7-5 until Ryan Dempster came in to close the door for his fifth save of the season. The loss was Atlanta's six in seven games.

        WP: Scott Eyre (1-0) - IP, 2 H, ER
        LP: Rafael Soriano (1-2) - 2.2 IP, 2 K, 2 H, 2 ER
        S: Ryan Dempster (5)

        Ryan Langerhans - 2-5

Rain Shortens Game to Eight Innings, Braves Triumph
Atlanta finally gets back on track thanks to rain
          Braves 4, Cubs 2

Chipper Jones & Atlanta hurdled over the Cubbies 4-2

Atlanta, GA -- Bobby Cox has obviously been frustrated by his team's performance over the past week or so, and definitely let the Braves know before the second game against Chicago. As a result, the Braves did something they hadn't done in awhile: get an early lead. Kelly Johnson has recently regained his form from the first few games of the year, and finished 3-4 as the catalyst at the top of the lineup. Andruw Jones hit his fifth homerun of the season, knocking in Johnson, giving Atlanta the lead that they would never give up.

Jacque Jones and Michael Barrett both had RBI's for the Cubbies, but the hits for Chicago were few and far between with Tim Hudson on the hill for Atlanta. The righty struck out four in seven innings of work, and allowed just one earned run in his efforts. After Mike Gonzalez pitched an inning, the game was called due to rain, but the game still counts towards the standings. Because the game was called, however, no winning or losing pitcher was announced.

          Kelly Johnson - 3-4, 2B, RBI, SB (4)
          Chipper Jones - 2-4
          Andruw Jones - 1-3, HR (5), 2 RBI
          Scott Thorman - 2-3, RBI

          Derrek Lee - 2-3
          Jacque Jones - 1-4, RBI

Mets Top Bravos in Shea Stadium
Pedro Martinez dominated the Atlanta lineup
            Mets 5, Braves 0

Pedro Martinez tallied nine strikeouts against the Braves

Queens, NY -- In short, Pedro Martinez dazzled in his complete game shutout effort. The aging righty recorded nine K's en route to his second victory of the season, and the Atlanta hitters looked terrible all day long. In fact, the Braves were unable to earn a single extra base hit all day long against Martinez, and reached third base only once against the Mets.

Jose Reyes and Jose Valentin both recorded three hits apiece, a double, and Valentin also added a homerun.

            WP: Pedro Martinez (2-2) - CG SHO, 9 K, 4 H
            LP: John Smoltz (2-1) - 6 IP, 5 K, 7 H, 2 ER

McCann's Monster Game Pushes Atlanta to Victory
The Braves put up eleven runs against El Duque
              Mets 4, Braves 11

Brian McCann drove in six runs against New York

Queens, NY -- When he's on, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez is one of the toughest pitchers in the league to face. He changes speeds well and has five pitches to choose from. When he's on, Hernandez can out-duel anybody in the Majors. That's when he's on.

Against the Braves, El Duque was anything but on. The righthanded starter gave up six earned in just over four innings of work, and was given fits by the Atlanta offense. Brian McCann did most of the damage himself, hitting four a double, two homeruns, and driving in six runs against the Mets.

              WP: Chuck James (2-1) - 7 IP, 6 K, 6 H, 3 ER

                Despite Redman's Heroics, Braves Fall
                John Maine sparkles in victory
                Mets 5, Braves 2

John Maine gave up just one earned run to Atlanta in the finale

Queens, NY -- Just a day after their offensive outburst in Queens, the Atlanta Braves' lineup took a step or two backwards against the Mets in the series finale. John Maine struckout six in the New York victory, and scattered nine hits that led to only one earned run on Atlanta's behalf.

Mark Redman pitched great for the Braves, striking out twelve Mets in his 7.1 innings of work. This marks the second time this year that Redman has K'd twelve in a losing effort because of run support.

Chipper and Andruw Jones both went deep for Atlanta, but in a losing effort.

                WP: John Maine (2-0) - 7.1 IP, 6 K, 9 H, ER
                LP: Mark Redman (0-2) - 7.1 IP, 12 K, 8 H, 5 ER

Edgar Renteria Drops in Lineup to Sixth
Hot-hitting Jeff Francoeur takes second spot

Edgar Renteria was 1-25 during one stretch this season

Atlanta, GA -- If you've been wondering why Edgar Renteria's name hasn't been mentioned much in the recaps, then look no further than the Cold Hitter's List of the Major Leagues. Renteria is struggling to keep his average at the Mendoza Line, and has been anything but clutch this season. As a result, Renteria has moved from his usual #2 spot in the order to #6 until he makes the changes needed.

Jeff Francoeur has been hitting the cover off of the ball this season, and has kept his average above .400. The rightfielder will move from #6 to #2 in the order in an effort to produce more runs for the offensively struggling Braves.

Atlanta Fries Fish in Game One
The Braves collected 21 hits in the contest
                    Marlins 5, Braves 13

Kyle Davies struck out nine in his 7.2 inning effort

Miami, FL -- When the home team hits five homeruns in a game, the chances of a victory are pretty high. The exception to the rule, however, is when the visiting team hits even more... like six. The Braves did just that, and outslugged the 1st-place Marlins in game one of their second series of the year.

Andruw Jones and Ryan Langerhans both homered twice for Atlanta, and the two drove in a total of nine runs against Ricky Nolasco's Fish. Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann added a double and a homerun apiece, as well.

Kyle Davies was on the bump for Atlanta, had a superb outing, and gained his second win of the season. In his 7.2 innings of work, the righthander K'd nine and gave up four earned runs.

                    WP: Kyle Davies (2-1) - 7.2 IP, 9 K, 7 H, 4 ER

Andruw Jones continues to hit the ball well, goes 3-5

Miami, FL -- Going into the eighth inning, all was well for the Florida Marlins. Their lead stood at 5-3, and Dontrelle Willis just exited after pitching seven strong innings. Then, all hell broke loose, and the Braves couldn't stop hitting even if they wanted to.

In the eighth, Atlanta batted around, and scored seven runs. Capped off by Chipper Jones' seventh homerun of the season, the Braves gained a 10-5 lead, and won by the same margin.

Atlanta starter, Tim Hudson, pitched well, but gave up five earned runs in the no decision. Hudson recorded four K's in five innings of work.

Miami, FL -- In the final game of the three game series between Florida and Atlanta, the Fish proved to be victorious behind a great pitching performance by youngster Josh Johnson. Johnson went all nine innings in the contest, scattering eight hits and allowing just a couple of runs.

John Smoltz pitched well for Atlanta, but was pinned with his second loss of the season after striking out seven in just over six innings of work. Run support has been a problem for Smoltz this year.

Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, and Alex Sanchez all recorded at least two hits apiece, and combined for three doubles, two triples, and three RBI.

In all honesty, not that many. I'm very impatient at the plate, so I only earn like one if I'm lucky. While pitching, I probably give up two or three per contest.
