    Braves Comeback to Beat Rockies
Andruw Jones continues to rake, hits two bombs in win
    Rockies 5, Braves 7

Kelly Johnson went 2-5 vs COL, still leads MLB in average

Denver, CO -- For the first several innings, it appeared that the Braves would drop a game at the hands of the hometown Rockies. Chuck James struggled through just over four innings, giving up four runs in the effort.

In the sixth inning, though, Atlanta got back on track behind the second homerun of the game by Andruw Jones. Later, Edgar Renteria homered for the second time this season. At the end of the inning, the Braves held a one-run lead and the game stood at 5-4.

Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez pitched flawlessly in the contest, and eventually gave way to Braves' closer Bob Wickman in the ninth. For the third time this year, though, the righthander blew a save by giving up a first-pitch homerun to Cory Sullivan. With the game knotted at 5, Wickman got out of the inning, and the Braves were set to hit in the tenth.

Kelly Johnson and Andruw Jones both scored in the tenth, and Atlanta held on for the 7-5 win.

    WP: Bob Wickman (2-1) - 2 IP, 2 K, 2 H, ER
    LP: Brian Fuentes (0-2) - 0.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER
    - Chuck James (ATL) - 4.1 IP, K, 8 H, 3 ER
    - Rodrigo Lopez (COL) - 5.1 IP, K, 7 H, 3 ER

    Kelly Johnson - 2-5
    Chipper Jones - 3-5, 2B
    Andruw Jones - 4-5, 2 HR (11), 5 RBI
    Brian McCann - 3-5
    Edgar Renteria - 1-5, HR (2)

    Jamey Carroll - 1-4, HR (1), 3 RBI
    Garrett Atkins - 2-5, 2 2B
    Todd Helton - 2-5, 2B
    Cory Sullivan - 3-4, HR (3)

Atlanta Hangs On in 2-1 Contest
The Braves have found their new closer in Mike Gonzalez
      Rockies 1, Braves 2

Mike Gonzalez pitched two scoreless innings for the save

Denver, CO -- This season has been frustrating for Atlanta starter Mark Redman. Despite having two innings in which he has recorded 12 strikeouts, the lefty stood at 0-2 before his start against Colorado.

This time around, though, the Braves gained the lead early for their pitcher. Redman didn't disappoint, either, as the veteran went seven strong innings and recorded nine strikeouts before departing with a 2-1 lead.

Mike Gonzalez got the call from the bullpen, and pitched two flawless innings in relief to earn his second save of the season. Bobby Cox opted not to go with Bob Wickman in the ninth, who has blown three of his four save opportunities so far this season. "I think we have a new closer," said Cox after the contest.

      WP: Mark Redman (1-2) - 7 IP, 9 K, 3 H, ER
      LP: Josh Fogg (1-3) - 6 IP, K, 7 H, 2 ER
      S: Mike Gonzalez (2)

      Kelly Johnson - 2-4
      Jeff Francoeur - 2-4, 2B
      Chipper Jones - 1-4, HR (8)
      Brian McCann - 2-4, 2B

      Jamey Carroll - 1-4
      Matt Holliday - 1-3, HR (4)

      Record: 13-10

        Braves Complete Sweep Over Colorado
Kelly Johnson extends hit streak to 18 games
        Rockies 2, Braves 5

Atlanta's Brian McCann went 2-3 with a homer in the finale

Denver, CO -- The Atlanta Braves had no problems in completing the three-game sweep over the Colorado Rockies with Kyle Davies on the hill. Atlanta's #5 starter pitched well as he earned his third win of the season after going seven innings and recording five strikeouts in the game.

Kelly Johnson led the offense, goin 4-5 with a stolen base to set the table for the rest of the lineup. Jeff Francoeur and Andruw Jones both added three hits apiece, and Brian McCann continued to swing the bat well as he homered and hit safely twice.

        WP: Kyle Davies (3-1) - 7 IP, 5 K, 7 H, ER
        LP: Jason Hirsh (1-3) - 6 IP, 2 K, 9 H, 3 ER
        S: Mike Gonzalez (3)

        Brian McCann - 2-3, HR (6)

        Matt Holliday - 1-4, RBI
        Todd Helton - 3-4, 2B
        Kaz Matsui - 2-4, RBI

Jimmy Rollins, right, and Aaron Rowand celebrate a homerun

Atlanta, GA -- Tim Hudson had only thrown one pitch, and the Braves were already down by a run. Jimmy Rollins deposited the first-pitch fastball over the right field fence for his second homer of the season, and would later add his third of the year in about the same spot. The Phillies hit a total of four homeruns on the afternoon, all of which were off Hudson.

Kelly Johnson extended his hit streak to 19 games in the third inning, and later added another single off of Philadelphia starter Jamie Moyer. Altogether, however, Atlanta struggled against the aging southpaw. Moyer improved to 3-2 on the year with the victory, and K'd seven in his performance.

                        Atlanta Braves' May 2007 Schedule
Another tough month ahead for the Tomahawks

Atlanta, GA -- In all honesty, not one series in May is a gimmie for the Atlanta Braves in 2007. After starting off with nine home games against the Phillies, Dodgers, and Padres, the Bravos do a little traveling. Pittsburgh should prove to be the easiest team on the schedule in May, but the month finishes brutally with games against Boston, the Mets, and the Phillies.

Atlanta ace John Smoltz went 7.1 innings in the Braves' win

Atlanta, GA -- The Braves started May with a game against division-foe Philadelphia, and didn't disappoint the hometown crowd. John Smoltz pitched very well for the Bravos, recording six strikeouts and allowing just one run in his efforts. Jeff Francoeur had another huge game for Atlanta, and continues to hit well from the second spot in the order.

Kelly Johnson stayed hot at the plate, as well, going 2-5 on the afternoon with an RBI. The secondbaseman extended his career-high hit streak to 20 games and added his ninth stolen base of the year in the first inning.

Cole Hamels puts an end to Kelly Johnson's streak

Cole Hamels allowed just a single run in eight innings of work

Atlanta, GA -- Chuck James just didn't have his best stuff in the rubbermatch of the three-game series against Philadelphia. The left-hander allowed six earned runs in just 4.2 innings, and gave way to the bullpen after giving up his eleventh hit.

On the other side of things, however, pitching was tremendous. Lefty Cole Hamels carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning against Atlanta, but did eventually cool off to allow one run on nine hits.

Kelly Johnson's hit streak was snapped at 20 games, and Atlanta's leadoff man will look to start fresh against the Dodgers.
