Washington's Felipe Lopez was 1-4 with the GW RBI-double

Washington D.C. -- Kyle Davies and Michael O'Connor hooked up in a nice pitcher's duel in game two of the four game set between Atlanta and Washington. Davies pitched seven innings, struck out seven, and gave up just one unearned run. O'Connor threw eight strong frames, K'ing seven and allowing one earned run in the contest.

The lone run the Nationals scored off of Davies was due to an outfield error by Willy Aybar, who was taking Jeff Francoeur's place in right field in the contest. Aybar had no trouble getting to the ball, but the whole catching thing seemed to allude him.

In the eighth inning, Bob Wickman took the mound for Atlanta. Wickman's appearances have seemed to be an adventure this season for the Braves, and this one was no different. The former closer gave up an earned run after Felipe Lopez doubled in Christian Guzman, and Washington won the ball game 2-1.

Washington D.C. -- Like the other couple of games so far in the series, the third game between the Braves and Nationals was a low-scoring affair. Tim Hudson pitched well for Atlanta, and Jerome Williams went eight strong innings for Washington.

Kelly Johnson got back on track at the plate with a 3-5 contest, including a double in the first inning to get things going. In the ninth inning, with the score knotted at two and with two outs in the inning, Johnson delivered yet again. The second baseman hit a hard line drive up the middle, and the game-winning run crossed the plate.

Andruw Jones stroked his fourteenth homerun of the season

Washington D.C. -- It came as a pleasant surprise that both John Smoltz and Shawn Hill gave up a combined seven runs on the evening. In the previous three games of this series, the Nationals and Braves combined for just nine runs.

In the top of the ninth, the game was deadlocked at five apiece after a brief Nationals comeback in the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Kelly Johnson came to the plate. Atlanta's leadoff man delivered for the second straight night, and hit a single into right field that scored the game winning run. Although the Braves eventually tacked on three more runs in the inning, it was Johnson's production that gets all of the glory.

I usually put out player stats at the end of each month... not that much longer.

I'm 4th in the division right now... like a game behind the Phils for third place. I've got some serious work to do if I want to make the playoffs.

Kevin Youkilis connects on his first inning homerun

Boston, MA -- Japanese phenom Daisuke Matsuzaka was as intimidating as anybody the Braves have faced yet this year. In the first inning, the Braves went down in order, and the feeling of a pitching gem was cast over the crowd.

Kevin Youkilis, Boston's second batter, homered on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the inning, putting the Sox up 1-0 very early on.

Several innings later, though, Matsuzaka was beat up by the Braves' offense. Brian McCann continued to hit well, and hit his ninth homerun of the season off of the Japanese starter. Ryan Langerhans handled the lumber with ease as well, going 3-5 with a 2 RBI double.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Braves held a three run lead, and closer Mike Gonzalez was coming to the bump. Guaranteed win, right? Wrong. Gonzalez allowed to quick runners to get on base, but the got two easy popups to the infield for two outs. The last batter in the lineup, Alex Cora, was due up, and Atlanta started to breath a little easier. However, after going down two strikes, Cora hit his third homerun of the year over the green monster, tying up the ballgame and giving Gonzalez a blown save.

The Braves hit poorly in the extra frames, but so did Boston. However, in the eleventh inning, Coco Crisp was on second base with two outs. Julio Lugo walked to the plate, and delivered with a double to win the game for Boston.

Kelly Johnson was 3-4 with an RBI-double against Boston

Boston, MA -- After a heartbreaking loss, the Braves returned to Fenway Park to take on Boston for the second day in a row. This time around, Mark Redman took the hill against Josh Beckett of the Sox.

Neither pitcher lasted seven innings, but both were very effective. Redman threw 6 innings and recorded eight strikeouts. The lefty only gave up an earned run to Boston, and departed after giving up just six hits. Beckett threw 6.2 innings, but struck out just three Atlanta hitters on the evening. The former World Series MVP gave up three earned runs to the Bravos.

Kelly Johnson hit well at the top of the lineup, recording three hits on the afternoon including an RBI-double. Andruw Jones, Edgar Renteria, and Willy Aybar added homeruns, and the Braves won 4-2.

Chipper Jones drove in seven runs and hit three homeruns

Boston, MA -- When Jonathan Papelbon takes the hill for Boston, things are usually lights out. However, when he started for the Red Sox against Atlanta in the third game of the series, things went to hell.

Four Braves finished with three or more hits, but none had the day that Chipper Jones did. The long-time Brave finished with three homeruns, giving him sixteen on the season, and seven RBI. Not much else needs to be said, other than Atlanta rolled behind a hot offensive effort.
