    Week 10 Preview
A quiet Week 10, but one big battle out west

    Game of the Week

    #22 Oregon State (6-2) @ #1 Southern California (8-0)

Star tailback Yvenson Bernard has been out most of the season for Oregon State with a broken wrist, and will miss at least two more weeks. His backup however, Clinton Polk, is approaching 1000 yards rushing and is a big factor in Oregon State's 6-2 record. It will be tough going for the Beavers' running game this week though, as they face the nation's 5th-ranked rushing defense in top-ranked USC, led by bone breaking middle linebacker Rey Maualuga. Maualuga is only one star on USC's defense though. If the Beavers key on him, there's always Keith Rivers, Brian Cushing, Taylor Mays, Lawrence Jackson, Sedrick Ellis, and others to clean up plays. The Trojans are one of three unbeaten Pac-10 teams. The others are UCLA (6th), and Arizona State (17th).

Wooo Pig Doozy: Gamecocks blow out Razorbacks
Mitchell is flawless as South Carolina announces their ascension to the SEC elite; showdown with Florida next

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The Gamecocks found the key to stopping Darren McFadden: Bury the Razorbacks on the scoreboard, and make them pass.

South Carolina did just that, as Blake Mitchell threw for 427 yards and 5 touchdowns, and the Gamecocks ambushed the unbeaten, 4th-ranked Razorbacks on their home field, 45-31.

With the win, the Gamecocks have clinched a winning record in the SEC, and have drawn even with the Florida Gators in the SEC East. They still trail Georgia, and will need help to reach the SEC Championship Game. But right now, Steve Spurrier is happy.

"We're really clickin' on all levels right now, the offense was great today...I mean we still got some protection issues with our quarterback, but he still had a helluva game. And the defense, well, the first stringers anyway, had themselves a ballgame too," the Ole Ball Coach said afterward. Arkansas piled on some points and yards on SC's backups in the fourth quarter.

Kenny McKinley was the recipient of most of Mitchell's gaudy numbers, racking up 126 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Chris Culliver got the chance to show off his wheels, as he caught three passes, all in the open field on crossing patterns, and beat Arkansas DBs to the corner each time. He accumulated 124 receiving yards, and added a score.

Florida vs. Spurrier III is next week, and for the first time since late in the 2005 season, the Gamecocks will be ranked in the Top 25.

Re: South Carolina Gamecocks (NCAA 08)

            Week 11 Preview
Time to turn it up a notch on Showdown Saturday

            #10 Florida (7-2) @ #24 South Carolina (8-2)

It is quite possibly the biggest night in the history of South Carolina football. Yes, they have hailed the last two wins over Tennessee and Arkansas as breakthroughs, but it is tonight that will determine the path of the Gamecocks. The Ole Ball Coach's team does NOT hold its destiny in its hands, but if they beat Percy Harvin and the Florida Gators, they will clinch the #2 spot in the SEC East all alone, and while their shot at Atlanta is a long one, it would be a huge step. Plus, Spurrier was audacious enough to schedule this game as the game to showcase his South Carolina program to recruits.

            #15 Auburn (8-2) @ #16 Georgia (7-2)

For Georgia, the mission is simple: Win, and you're in. The Bulldogs are 5-1 in SEC play, and with victories over South Carolina and Florida, they need only one win to clinch the SEC East's berth in the Championship Game in Atlanta. They'd love to do it against rival Auburn in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, but if not, Kentucky comes to Athens next week. Auburn is a long shot to come out of the West; despite beating LSU, their 4-2 SEC record trails both LSU (5-1) and Arkansas (4-1).

            #21 Texas Tech (9-1) @ #7 Texas (9-1)

All the Eyes of Texas will be in Austin this weekend, as the logjam at the top of the Big 12 South will get a little less crowded. Oklahoma sits alone at 5-0, but both Texas Tech and Texas are 5-1. The Red Raiders hold their destiny in their hands, with Texas this week and Oklahoma next week in Lubbock. The Longhorns have Tech's number at home though, winning the last four meetings in Austin by an average score of 48.8 to 17.8.

            #23 Arizona State (8-1) @ #4 UCLA (9-0)

The race to face USC is on in the Rose Bowl this weekend, as 8-1 (5-1 Pac-10) Arizona State takes on 9-0 (6-0) UCLA. The Sun Devils were knocked off in Oregon last week, and face the Trojans in Tempe next week. Meanwhile, UCLA has the exact same record as their crosstown rivals. If the Bruins can get by ASU with a win, they have Oregon at the Rose Bowl next week before a possible showdown with USC in the Coliseum on December 1st.

            #9 Florida State (9-0) @ #6 Virginia Tech (8-1)

It should be a preview of the ACC Championship Game, and what a doozy. The Seminoles' renaissance has come about somewhat abruptly, but no one in Tallahassee is complaining. The Noles are 6-0 in the ACC, half a game ahead of 5-0 Maryland in the Atlantic Division, and they host the Terps next week. VaTech on the other hand, lead Virginia by 1.5 games in the Coastal and Miami by a full 2 games, and they play both of those teams in the next two weeks. Barring a major upset, this is the ACCCG, Part One.

            Game of the Week

            #13 Louisville (8-1) @ #5 West Virginia (8-0)

The Big East rules Thursday Nights once again, and for the third time, Brian Brohm and Pat White face off in what should be another epic clash between the Cardinals and Mountaineers. Two years ago, it was WVU outlasting Louisville in Morgantown 46-44 in triple overtime. Last year Louisville got revenge at home, 44-34. Consider this the rubber match between Brohm and White. Louisville's loss to Syracuse early on in Big East play threw a wrench into things, and the Cardinals chance to repeat as champions will be all but gone if WVU knocks them off, as WVU stands at 3-0 in conference play, Louisville at 3-1, and Rutgers at 4-1. WVU has already handled Rutgers; Louisville gets them in three weeks. WVU has also handled South Florida, Louisville's opponent next week.

                Gamecocks sack Gators!
A dozen sacks caps off South Carolina's greatest SEC season ever

COLUMBIA, SC - If you were one of the three standout defensive recruits visiting the South Carolina campus this weekend that attended the South Carolina-Florida game, how do you not come away impressed?

The Gamecocks put on a defensive display Saturday, blitzing Florida's Tim Tebow from every angle. Sometimes he slipped away and bolted into the open field. Other times SC didn't blitz, and the front four manhandled Florida's offensive line. When all was said and done, Tebow left the field with his jersey basically in pieces, to the tune of 12 sacks, and the 24th-ranked Gamecocks beat their 3rd straight Top 25 opponent, overwhelming #10 Florida, 27-13.

Other than the sacks, the defense could not have forced more opportunistic turnovers. Down 6-3 in the first quarter, pressure up front forced Tebow to throw early, and Stoney Woodson intercepted him in the back of the endzone. In the 2nd quarter, with it still 6-3, Tebow galloped into the secondary in South Carolina territory, when Brandon Issac grabbed him and punched the ball out. Marvin Sapp dove on it. After Cory Boyd put SC ahead 10-6, Issac forced another fumble, this time on the ensuing kickoff, and the Gamecocks recovered it again, setting up a field goal.

The play of the game however, came in the 4th quarter. Florida finally managed to take care of the ball, and Tebow broke through for a short touchdown run, shrinking Carolina's lead to 20-13. A shift in momentum could be sensed. The ensuing kickoff was angled toward the right sideline, but playable. Freshman phenom Chris Culliver fielded the ball at the 10 yard line, made one move, and turned on the after burners. 88 yards later he was finally dragged down at Florida's two yard line.

Two plays later, the Gamecocks got the clinching score.

The Gamecocks did receive some bad news though. Sackmaster DE Eric Norwood, a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award, broke his collarbone on Florida's final offensive snap of the game. Ironically, he tackled Tim Tebow on the play. His season ends with 15 sacks.

I fully expect Michigan to blow its perfect season in the Ohio State game.

                      Wolverines seek revenge

                      Game of the Week

                      #19 Ohio State (9-2) @ #2 Michigan (11-0)

It's not quite Football Armageddon like it was last year, but it's still Michigan vs. Ohio State, and that says it all. Just like last year, Michigan enters The Game unbeaten, ranked 2nd in the nation. This year, however, the Wolverines have already wrapped up the Big Ten title and the BCS bid the conference has. Surprise teams Purdue and Indiana (who are playing against each other this week) are 6-1 in the conference, but the Wolverines have tie breakers over both of them. The Buckeyes are just 5-2 in the conference, but their season would be made if Jim Tressel can continue his dominance over Lloyd Carr.

                                Week 13 Preview
Rivalries and big time implications in Week 13

                                Clemson (5-6) @ #19 South Carolina (9-2)

It doesn't matter that there are no conference title implications. South Carolina has no chance at the SEC Championship, and has virtually no shot at an at-large BCS bid, but Steve Spurrier is determined to send his seniors out with a win over Clemson. SC beat the Tigers 31-28 last year, and haven't beaten them in consecutive years since 1969 and 1970.

                                #14 Boise State (10-1) @ #9 Hawaii (10-0)

Boise State, last year's Cinderella, is looking to retain their glass slippers this week as they face this year's potential...Boise State. Hawaii, looking for a Fiesta Bowl bid, is led by holder of all records Colt Brennan, but the Broncos could play themselves into Fiesta Bowl consideration with a win. It's Hawaii's #1 offense (50.9 PPG, 526.8 YPG) against Boise State's #1 defense (11.6 PPG, 189.7 YPG).

                                #17 Arkansas (9-2) @ #7 LSU (10-1)

The SEC West Championship is on the line in Baton Rouge, with the winner clinching a spot in the Championship Game against Georgia. Darren McFadden and Arkansas are looking to return for the 2nd straight year, but they need to win at LSU, something they haven't done since 1993. They also haven't beaten the Bayou Bengals period since 2002.

                                Game of the Week

                                #1 Southern California (10-0) @ #23 Arizona State (8-2)

Arizona State started 8-0, but has now lost back to back games to Oregon and UCLA. UCLA hosts Oregon this weekend, and although Arizona State certainly has a chance at home, it is unlikely they'll be able to match #1 USC's firepower. Both USC and UCLA should win, setting up the ultimate showdown next week in the Coliseum between the 11-0 Bruins and 11-0 Trojans.
