The first quarter was crazy. Young had about 125 yards and Sims 90 at the end of the first quarter. It is nice to have two quality backs like them. NIU's run defense was pathetic. I saw the real life game on TV and it was bad there too as Sims and Young ran all over them.

After the first quarter, things calmed down a bit. I also began to get a lot of the youngsters in to get them some reps. With 6 minutes left in the game, every player that is not being redshirted had seen action.

I won game number 2 and will post the story and stats tomorrow, but I just wanted to add to the long list of people that feel the interception bug may be ruining an otherwise great game. I set the slider down to 15 and still had a lot of picks. I guess I will have to move it to zero. When you see the stats, you will, as I did, wonder how Iowa was able to win in spite of all the INTs thrown. Needless to say, there may be a quarterback controversy looming as Christensen was frustrating the heck out of me, while Nelson had a nice game. He may be in line for more playing time, or I may use a two quarterback system.

While checking the depth charts I noticed that Erik Ainge was not starting for Tennessee and was redshirted. Turns out that he sustained a severly briused tailbone early in the Cal game and is out 8 weeks. But they have him taking a medical redshirt.

                Re: Iowa Hawkeyes (NCAA 2008)

                A Comedy of Errors

Hawkeyes win turnover plagues game, Ferentz not pleased

Iowa City (AP) - Iowa overcame a total of nine turnovers and a ten point deficit to defeat Syracuse (0-2) in the home opener at Kinnick Stadium.

The Hawkeyes (2-0) jumped out to a 28-14 lead with 5:26 left in the second quarter, but a touchdown scored on a 57 yard lateral by Lamar Lobdell ignited the Orange.

The third quarter saw Syrcuse score 17 unanswered points as a capacity Kinnick crowd sat in stunned silence. At that point, starting quarterback Jake Christensen was removed from the game. Christensen struggled, throwing eight interceptions. The turning point came when Syracuse quarterback Andrew Robinson was intercepted by Iowa linebacker Jeremiha Hunter. Two plays later, new signal caller Arvell Nelson, audibled and hit tight end Tony Moeaki for a 21 yard touchdown play. The Hawkeyes regained the lead for good.

The big story were the postgame comments by Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who seemed to implay that there be a change in starting quarterbacks for the big rivaly game against Iowa State.

"It would be an understatement to say that Jake struggled out there today," Ferentz said. "As a staff, I think we may have left him in there too long as, being a first year starter, he needs to fight his way through adversity. Arvell did a very nice job and didn't force things. When the defense started to stack against the run, as Syracuse did in the second half, we have to be able to adapt. We demonstrated that we can move the ball in the air, but we have to stop throwing the ball to the wrong colored jerseys. We also need to eliminate the dumb penalties like running into the kicker and excessive celebrations. All these things will be addressed in practice and I told the guys, enjoy your day off because practice will not be fun. They brought this on themselves"

Iowa's defense stood out, harrassing Robinson all day, sacking him ten times.
