    The Chicago Bears in 2009/10

    2009-2010 Chicago Bears

    Opening season depth chart:

    9/12 article

The Chicago Bears 2009 campaign opens on 9/13 at Soldier Field against the Minnesota Vikings. In 2007 the season started with Rex Grossman and ended with Brian Griese and a NFC Championship loss to the Washington Redskins. The 2008 season started with Chris Leak and ended with Colt McCoy and a 6-10 season.

The 2009 season will start with Matt Schaub. Schaub was acquired in the off-season from the Houston Texans via trade. After leading the Houston Texans to a 8-8 record, Matt Schaub lost his starting job to rookie Brian Brohm the following season. Brohm led the Houston Texans to their first playoff birth before a exit to the New England Patriots. A couple months later the Chicago Bears acquired Matt Schaub.

As soon as the trade happened, Schaub was confirmed starter in the 2009 season. However, all that changed in the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In the first round Bears picked their man Steve Slanton. In the second round was top 10 pick Stephen McGee and no way would the Bears pass up on McGee. McGee impressed in the pre-season going for 675 yards and 9 touchdowns and 1 interception in four games. Schaub on the other hand went for 531 yards and 3 touchdowns and 1 interception in four games. However the Bears coaching staff have decided to go with the experienced Matt Schaub over Stephen McGee to start the season. "Matt Schaub is our starting quarterback at this time." Lovie Smith

In other quarterback news is the return of Rex Grossman to Soldier Field, but this time as starter of the Minnesota Vikings. Rex Grossman was signed to a three contract in the off-season and the Vikings are hoping he can squeeze out a victory against his former team.

Kick off time is 1:00 EST at Chicago.

    Other news:

Steve Slanton was confirmed starter but after a terrific pre-season by Garret Wolfe (342 yards/6 TDs), Wolfe will get more carries then believed five weeks ago.

      Thanks.

There was no doubt in my mind who I was going to draft in the first round, especially after he did this to my FSU team.

              Game recap:

A new year, and a new team, but the same results for former Bears quarterback and now present Vikings quarterback Rex Grossman. Rex Grossman came into Minnesota saying how we will be the franchise quarterback and will lead this team to the playoffs. If he continues throwing picks he will lead his team to the bottom of the division. Rex Grossman threw three picks and the third (To Brian Urlacher) being the most important in a 36-36 game in the final minute to give Chicago good field position and later the win.

In a game featuring some nasty weather and a continuous downpour through four quarters, this game turned into a slug fest. The game started off with Grossman’s first throw being picked off by rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga which was returned for a quick six. “Your first play on the field you just hope you don’t mess up but when you get an interception and return it for a TD, what more can you ask of yourself?” And the Bears couldn’t ask anymore of the USC standout. The following possession the Vikings went a quick 3 and out and Devin Hester returned the ball for 36 yards to give the Bears the ball within the Minnesota 40. Couple plays later Garrett Wolfe ran it in for this first NFL TD to put the Bears up by 14.

Start of the second quarter the Vikings responded with a 48 yard completion to Troy Williamson for a quick six. The following possession the Bears turned it over and the Vikings ran it down their throats with Adrian Peterson going in for a TD and to tie the game at 14-14. The Vikings got the ball back in the closing minute of the game to kick a FG to make the game 17-14 Vikings going into half time.
The following possession of the third quarter started off with a Matt Shaub interception that led to another Minnesota FG to make it 24-14. With the Bears struggling to move the ball the Vikings got the ball back and got another field goal to make the game 27-14. The Bears however responded this time with a nice drive and a punch in for the TD by Slanton to make the game 27-21. The Vikings responded with a drive of their own and an Adrian Peterson score to put them up 33-21. Minnesota wanted to increase their lead to two touchdowns but failed on a two point conversation. On the following kick off Devin Hester fumbled the ball to give the Vikings good field position to close the quarter.

In the fourth quarter Minnesota hit another field goal to give them a 36-21 lead. On the following drive Steve Slanton pounded the ball and put the Bears into scoring range where he later punched it in for 6. Score: 36-28. On the following possession with two minutes left the Vikings went three and out with 1:35 left to play and punted to the ball to the 50 where the Bears went to work. The Bears kept to the running game getting two big breaks where they went to the Minnesota 14 with 48 seconds left. On the following play Limas Sweed ran a one on one route and Schaub tossed a jump ball and Sweed came down with a spectacular catch! The ruling was incomplete pass but the crew upstairs challenged the play and the ruling was Sweed came down with the ball with two feet in before going out of bounds. Touchdown Bears; 36-34. With only one time out left, the two point conversation meant win or lose. Minnesota blitzed all but the kitchen sink but Schaub hit a wide open Slaton to pick up the two points and put the Bears and Vikings tied at 36-36. On the following play Bobby Wade ran the ball to the Minnesota 40 with great field position and all their time outs Minnesota had a chance. A quick slant to Rice put the ball at the Bears 45. On the next play Brian Urlacher intercepted a poorly thrown ball and returned it to the Minnesota 45 where Schaub hit Michael Bradley for a 31 yard pass to set up the Bears at the Minnesota 14. A couple runs later the Bears got stopped at the Minnesota 2 with three seconds left. Robbie Gould came out to hit the game winning field goal to put the Bears up 39-36 with no time remaining.

Tune in for our next game where the Bears host the San Francisco 49ers.

              Game notes:

It was a very solid running by Steve Slaton as he ran for 119 yards for two touchdowns in his first NFL game.

Matt Schaub struggled to get into any kind of a rhythm as he overthrew receivers everywhere but managed to move the ball when necessary. Look to him to rebound in the next game.
