See, reading this makes me want to just go hard with my Redskins' journal on 2k5. I'll probably get a game in today after work.

          Offseason Report #1

Charlotte, NC - The Carolina Panthers entered the offseason looking to make the team better for next season. GM Hunter Crow vowed to make some big free agent signings this offseason, but it's not that time of year yet. The Panthers entered the offseason with 18.7 million dollars of cap room, but with many many players still needed to be resigned or released. Rod Smart, though only in his 20s, decided to hang up his cleats for good. With his contract expiring and unlikely to be signed by another team, he decided to hang it up. "I had a good 5 years in the NFL," he said, "but I'm ready to move on with my life and explore new frontiers. I think I've done all I can do in the NFL, which isn't much, and that's the reason I am retiring." Smart was the Panthers 3rd string halfback, so Mr. Crow will probably need to sign another runningback to take his place.

Below is a list of players that the Panthers decided to re-sign or release.

          Re-signed Players

          - QB Jake Delhomme
          New Contract: 4 years, 11.15 million, 40 % bonus

          -LB Jessie Armstead
New Contract: 2 years, 3.94 million, 50% bonus

          Released Players

          - WR Muhin Muhammad
          - OLB Will Witherspoon
          - OLB Mark Fields
          - CB Artrell Hawkins
          - DT Shane Burton
          - CB Davis Wesley

          Retiring Players

          - Rod Smart

          Summary

          - The Panthers decide to resign quarterback Jake Delhomme and veteran Jessie Armstead, but pass up and release 6 players. Rod Smart also retired.

            Offseason Report #2

Charlotte, NC - The Carolina Panthers came into the free agent signing period with big names like Matt Hasselbeck, Joey Galloway, and Bubba Franks in the mix. The Panthers immediately went after Matt Hasselbeck, Bubba Franks, offensive guard DeMulling, and wide receiver Joey Galloway.

In the end, the Panthers were only able to sign Joey Galloway and Bubba Franks. Galloway is a very talented wide receiver and to get him at such a cheap price is a steal. Bubba Franks is one of the elite tight ends in the NFL. Both players should be starters next season and should contribute to the offense immensely.

            Signed Players

            - WR Joey Galloway
New Contract: 1 year, 1.92 million

            - TE Bubba Franks
New Contract: 5 years, 18.17 million

Man, I can't believe Denver lossed the title game by one. I can't wait to start a franchise in this. Gonna take a couple more games to get used to it though. I'm in awe at the presentation of this game. I couldn't believe my eyes during the halftime stuff. It's really awesome.

Haha, yeah I thought the Broncos were going to get to the Super Bowl, then they lost by 1 point. I didn't think you'd like that too much.

Yes, the presentation is great. That's one of my favorite parts of the game.

                      Panthers Initiate Trade

Charlotte, NC - For the first time in the Hunter Crow era, the Panthers made a trade. The Panthers had 55 players on their roster after preseason, and as many of you know, the NFL maximum is 54. Not wanting to simply release a player, Hunter Crow decided he would do a 2-for-1 trade. As it turned out, he traded Strong Safety Jarrod Cooper (53 OVR) and Wide Receiver Drew Carter (52 OVR) to the Miami Dolphins. In return, the Panthers receive rookie halfback Rodolfo Kelley (56 OVR). "We feel Kelley has great potential and we would love to see him mature under our organization."

                      Dophins Get:

                      J. Cooper (53 OVR)
                      D. Carter (52 OVR)

                      Panthers Get:

                      R. Kelley (56 OVR)

                            2005-2006 Carolina Panthers Preview

Charlotte, NC - Could this be the year the Panthers return to the playoffs. The Panthers offense features 2 runningbacks, Steve Smith and Deshaun Foster, who are rated 90. Hunter Crow will start Davis, but hopes to use Foster extensively as well. The quarterback position is manned by Jake Delhomme, who had a shaky year last year, but looks to bounce back this season. Delhomme had few weapons at wide receiver last year except Steve Smith due to Muhsin Muhammad's injury, but this year he'll have plenty. With the addition of Joey Galloway and tight end Bubba Franks, Delhomme will have other weapons besides Steve Smith to go to, which should open up the passing game a bit more this year. Couple that with a solid offensive line, and things are looking good on the offensive side of the ball.

On defense, the Panthers have a very solid front 7 with their great defensive line of Jenkins, Peppers, Rucker, and Buckner. These 4 have been together for years and are thriving together. At linebacker, Brandon Short and Jessie Armstead will start in place of Mark Fields and Will Witherspoon, who whose contracts were not renewed by the Panthers. The cornerback position may be a bit thin this season, but a solid crew of safeties should keep things under control. After missing the majority of last season, veteran strong safety Mike Minter will be back and should be the leader of the Carolina secondary.

On special teams, John Jasey will be a reliable kicker as always. Todd Sauerbrun will punt the football again this year. Steve Smith will be a force returning kicks again this year with his blazing speed.

Overall, we think the Panthers will finish 10-6 and earn a Wild Card spot in the NFC.

Tampa, FL - The Carolina Panthers dominated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as Carolina forced Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson into throwing a career-high 7 interceptions in the 37-10 win in Tampa. Brad Johnson continually mad bad decisions as the Carolina secondary was pressuring him all day long. Combine that with excellent pass defense, and you have a recipe for interceptions. The Carolina defense also returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns, which accounted for 2 of the 4 Carolina touchdowns.

Jake Delhomme had a good today as he threw no interceptions in the game. He completed 17 of his 29 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. The Stephen Davis-Deshaun Foster runningback tandem worked well for the Panthers as Davis ran for 132 yards and Foster ran for another 48 and a touchdown. "I really like what we're doing here with our runningbacks," commented Coach Crow.

Coach Crow was very pleased with the performance of the defense. "If we can play like this all year," he said, "we certainly have the ability to beat anyone. I really think we can make the playoffs this year if we play our best. I know I'm be cracking open the champagne tonight!"

With the win, the Panthers beat division-rival Tampa Bay as the Panthers gain a leg up in the division. The Panthers improve to 1-0 and the Buccaneers fall to 0-1.
