    The Cardiac Cats

Hey, I am restarting this dynasty since I am going to start posting this over at DSM as well.

Hello, hello. Welcome to the Cardiac Cats dynasty featuring who else but the Carolina Panthers. In this dynasty, we will take a trip back in time to the 2003-2004 season where we will follow the Panthers coming off a 7-9 season. John Fox has unexpectedly left the team, but will not release why to the public. James Frizzell has been hired to take his place and will also hold the General Manager position and be in charge of all personel decisions.

The Panthers have had only 1 winning season in their first 8 seasons of the franchise. A 12-4 season in 1996 in which they reached the NFC Championship was their only winning season. Mr. Frizzell hopes to change that and bring a winning atmosphere to this expansion franchise.

Here are some guidelines I plan to follow:

1.) I will use "ask Madden" for playcalling for offense and defense usually, but if I do not like the play called, I have the freedom to manually pick a play.
2.) I will do my best to run a fairly balanced offense.
3.) I will not make any bizzar trades.
4.) I will try not to abuse the computer or "cheese" and will do my best to play realistically.
5.) Quarter length shall be 10 minutes with Accelerated Clock on.
6.) The difficulty setting shall be All-Pro with adjusted sliders

So, here we go. Feel free to post now if you would like. Thank you!

            2003 Preseason Results

Alright, I am going to go ahead and simulate the preseason. To be honest, I do not get much thrill our of playing 4 meaningless games. So here are the results of the preseason games.

            Code:
            WK Opponent
            1 Washington Redskins W 24-9
            2 @ New York Giants W 20-10
            3 @ Green Bay Packers L 41-6
            4 Pittsburgh Steelers W 20-10

                      2003-2004 Carolina Panthers Preview

The Panthers have an unproved leader in Jake Delhomme.

Charlotte, NC - The Panthers come into this season not expecting much. The franchise has endured painful losses and mediocrity throughout it's first 8 years of existence. The Panthers unexpectedly fired coach John Fox after only one season in which he posted a respectable (to Panthers' standards) 7-9 record. James Frizzell, a lifelong Panthers fan has been hired to take his place and also become the General Manager.

The Panthers have an unproved starter at the quarterback position in Jake Delhomme, who was brought in for New Orleans where he was a third stringer behind Aaron Brooks. If he does not perform, do not expect Coach Frizzell to hesitate to put in last year's starter, 38 year old veteran Rodney Peete. Peete is likely in his final year as an NFL quarterback and would love to earn the starting position.

Stephen Davis will lead the potent rushing attack which should perform barring any injuries. The wide receivers look decent with Muhsin Muhammad being the star there. Speedy Steve Smith will pile up some yards along with clever veteran Ricky Proehl.

The defense looks capable and that is what Coach Frizzell is emphasizing this season. "If we can stop them on offense, we will win most of the time," he says. "That is the key." The front four looks great. Star Julius Peppers will be great as usual. He is joined by fellow defensive end Mike Rucker and the 300 pounder Kris Jenkins who will clog up the running lanes. Dan Morgan is a force at middle linebacker along with Mark Fields. Mike Minter is a very good safety and will help prevent big plays. Depth is a problem for the defense as most of the offense is as well. If a starter gets injured, the Panthers may have to look to free agency to provide a capable backup in many cases.

Overall, this Panthers team has the tools to have a decent year, but injuries are bound to happen and this team has very little depth. While the Panthers certainly could exceed expectations, we see them finishing 8-8.

8-8 is a great record to shoot for. If you overcome the Buccs and Falcons you should be able to challenge for the divisional record.

Yes, I am hoping for 8-8. 8-8 may even be enough to win the NFC South or Wildcard since the NFC is rather weak.

                            Panthers Tame Jaguars 27-24!

Mark Fields returned a crucial interception for a touchdown to make it 24-10.

Charlotte, NC - The Panthers just barely escaped the ravenous Jacksonville Jaguars in this matchup. The Panthers jumped out to an early 3-0 land led 10-3 at the half. Both teams traded touchdowns in the 3rd as the Panthers went into the 4th quarter with a 17-10 lead. Mark Fields picked off Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell and took it 81 yards to the house to make it 24-10 with 9 minutes remaining. Then, the Panthers fell apart. Frank Taylor got a touchdown run with 5 minutes left. Then, after a Panthers 3 and out, they punted the ball to the Jaguars' Lewis, who pleasantly took the ball 72 yards to the house to tie the game up. Jake Delhomme proceeded to throw a huge interception, but the Jaguars failed to capitalize as they missed their field goal attempt. Jake Delhomme on the next drive ran an effective 2 minute drill as he piloted the offense down to the 28 yard line, where with 30 seconds left, John Kasey nailed a 47 yard field goal right down the middle. The Jaguars got the ball back with no timeouts, but ran out of time and the Panthers survived this dangerous game.

Jake Delhomme was decent for the Panthers today as he completed 15 of his 30 passes for 139 yards. He also ran for a 6 yard touchdown. Unfortunately, he threw 2 interceptions, 1 of which nearly cost the Panthers the game. He was good enough to keep the starting job as Coach Frizzell announced he would indeed start next week against NFC South rival Tampa Bay.

The Panthers were committed to the running game in this game, even though it was largely ineffective. Stephen Davis only ran for 62 yards on 27 carries and overall the Panthers only ran for 91 yards. They were able to maintain possession of the ball, though and limited the mistakes Jake Delhomme could make.

This is certainly a big win for the Panthers. Even though the Jaguars are not particularly playoff-caliber, this win will give the Panthers confidence as they head into their showdown with the Buccaneers next week in Tampa. As Coach Frizzell put it, "We won and that's all the matters. I'd like to win big, but as long as we win and are successful, I will be happy."

With the win, the Panthers open the season up 1-0 and travel to Tampa to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 2.
