    (5-2)

Houston, TX - Houston came into the game on a roll looking to have a franchise best season. They were 5-2 and were on a roll. One problem presented itself unto them, however. David Carr was out with a broken Jaw and would not return for another 6 weeks. So backup quarterback Tony Banks gets the nod to start. Then, in the 3rd quarter, he is knocked out for the game. In comes 3rd stringer Mike Quinn, who would actually pilot the Texans to a near comeback, but Carolina would score a touchdown with 30 seconds left to secure the win.

Jake Delhomme had a very efficient day. He completed 20 of 33 passes for 230 yards, a touchdown, and most importantly, no interceptions. Tight end Kris Magnum surprised many with 5 receptions for 66 yards in the win.

With the win, the Panthers improve to a very surprising 6-2 as we are now at the midway point of the season.

Charlotte, NC - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers once again destroyed the hopes of the Carolina Panthers, as the Panthers lost for the 2nd time to them this season, 31-24. This may all but kill the Panthers chances at an NFC South Title with the way the Buccaneers are playing, but I Wild Card Birth is definitely a possibility.

The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 20-7 lead in the 1st quarter before letting the Panthers back into the game. The Panthers led 24-23 in the 4th before Brad Johnson threw his only touchdown pass of the day with 11 minutes left. The Bucs would get the 2, and go up 31-24. The Panthers would drive down the field again, but fell short at the 17 yard line, as they failed to get in the endzone when it mattered most.

Stephen Davis had a monster game. He carried the ball 27 times for a startling 200 yards and 2 touchdowns, one on an 82 yard scamper down the middle. He was the lone star for the Panthers, however, as Jake Delhomme would toss 2 costly interceptions in the game.

The Panthers fall to 6-3 with the loss and the Buccaneers improve to 8-1, something that nobody really expected.

Tampa Bay is on a roll. 8-1, wow. Hopefully you can get another win over the Falcons and take control of that wild card spot. It looks like a 4 team race, i'll be interested to see how it turns out.

Yeah, I don't know why they're doing so good. They are on quite a roll, though and seem quite unstoppable.

                      Turnovers Doom Carolina
Sloppy weather leads to six Carolina turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns

Charlotte, NC (AP) - The Carolina Panthers (6-3) and the Washington Redskins (5-4) matched up in what appeared to be a good matchup and a nice matchup it was.

The torrential rain which fell this afternoon in Charlotte created a field of mud and the ball was muddy, soggy, and downright disgusting. This contributed to six combined turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play as both teams had thrown two interceptions and fumbled the ball once by the 10 minute mark in the second quarter.

The game was tight throughout the first three quarters. The Redskins led 10-9 before quarterback Patrick Ramsey threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to give the Redskins a 17-9 lead.

Then things got ugly as the rain picked back up. Jake Delhomme tossed two interceptions in the fourth quarter and both were returned for pick-sixes to give the Washington Redskins a 34-9 road victory.

"This was a rather disappointing game, but the rain made it difficult to execute our plays," explained Carolina head coach James Frizzell. "We were only outgained 307 yards to 303 yards and we both had 16 first downs. The difference was that we turned the ball over six times compared to their four turnovers."

                        Carolina Blows It
Another stagnant offensive showcase leads to third straight loss

Dallas, TX (AP) - The Carolina Panthers (6-4) looked poised early on to end their two game losing streak as they led the slumping Dallas Cowboys (4-6) 16-3 late in the third quarter after Steve Smith returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown, Carolina's first and only touchdown of the day.

Then things turned ugly as the Cowboys reeled off 24 straight points in the final 15:25 after being held to a single field goal for the first 44:35 of the game.

"Our defense collapsed," said Panthers head coach James Frizzell, "but it had a lot to do with our inept offense. Our defense was out there for practically the entire game and they held up well. But the chickens finally came to roost for us."

The Panthers have now been held without an offensive touchdown for their last two games and have now lost three in a row to fall to 6-5, a losing streak which the Panthers could not afford. It will be a tall order to qualify for the playoffs now, and the offense better improve by leaps and bounds if the Panthers would like a piece of the pie.

The Panthers will be without outside linebacker Will Witherspoon next week as the 30 year old will be out with an injury.

I'm liking this: Madden NFL 2004 and very realistic results. Tough loss against Quincy Carter (lol) and 6-5 is a hard hole to comeback from.

                          Nice format as well.

                              Carolina Bounces Back
Defense steps up big in 17-10 downing of Philidelphia

Charlotte, NC (AP) - After losing three straight games, Carolina's defense stepped up big as the Carolina Panthers (6-5) ended their slump with a 17-10 win over Donovan McNabb and the Philidelphia Eagles (7-4).

Donovan McNabb threw for 190 yards and completed 20 of 34 passes, but the Carolina defense forced three inteceptions. Duce Staley ran for 136 yards on 30 carries, but Carolina's defense forced enough turnovers to offset Philidelphia's 343 offensive yards.

Carolina only mustered 318 yards of total offense, but only turned the ball over once on a Ricky Proehl fumble, which set up Philidelphia's 21 yard field goal in the first quarter. Jake Delhomme threw for 178 yards and, after last week's unmemorable four interception performance, threw none this week.

Stephen Davis also managed 111 yards on 35 carries for a pair of touchdowns as Carolina continued to rely heavily on the running game. He also caught three passes for 43 yards.

"The running game is key," explained first-year Carolina head coach James Frizzell. "The run wasn't working very well last week, which forced us to put the ball in the air more than we would have liked to. That led to Jake's less-than-stellar performance. The running game is key for this team."

The Panthers improved to 7-5 with four regular season games remaining.

                                Atlanta Downs Carolina
Carolina falls to 7-6 with loss to first place Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (AP) - Carolina's Wild Card hopes took another blow today as the Carolina Panthers (7-5) were edged out 23-16 by the NFC South-leading Atlanta Falcons (9-3).

After starting the season with low expectations, coming off a 7-9 season last year. However, the Panthers came out of the gates energized by first-year head coach James Frizzell and jumped out streaking to a 6-2 record. Since then, however, the Panthers have now dropped four out of their last five games and a once promising Wild Card berth is slipping out of reach.

The Carolina defense came into the game hoping to contain Michael Vick and force him to throw the ball. Unfortunately for Carolina, they didn't contain Vick and Vick threw the ball quite well. He passed for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also rushing for another 84 yards on just eight carries.

"We didn't stop him," explained Frizzell, "but I guess that's what makes him so good. We thought we had him wrapped up for a sack several times only to see him escape down the field for five, 10, or even 15 yards. He made several key scrambles on third and long plays which kept our defense on the field as well."

Carolina's running game was less-than-stellar as Stephen Davis only managed 49 yards on 20 carries. Jake Delhomme actually led the team in rushing as he got off several key scrambles of his own, finishing wiht 56 yards on five carries.

"When they leave a gaping hole open for me to run, I'm going to scramble," explained the quarterback. "I'm not any Michael Vick, but if there's no defender wihtin 20 yards, I can certainly pick up some key first downs with my legs."

Delhomme also passed for 202 yards, a touchdown, and threw two picks.
