After letting a 17 point halftime lead slip away, Georgetown's sophomore sniper shoots them into the Big East final with dramatic buzzer beater

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Perhaps it's just a little bit of fate that the Big East Tournament was in the nation's capital at the Verizon Center this year. The Hoyas call it home during the season, and had won 36 games in a row there entering the tournament. They needed a furious comeback and overtime to beat Villanova yesterday in the Big East quarterfinal. So how would they handle Pittsburgh, a team that clobbered them by 22 only a week ago in Pittsburgh?

Well they fell behind 17-4.

And then when on a 35-5 run, heading to halftime up 39-22.

But when DeJuan Blair returned for Pitt in the second half after being neutralized with foul trouble in the first, the tide began to turn, as the Panthers got physical with Georgetown's young frontline, with Blair using a mix of finesse and strength to outmaneuver Hoya freshman Domonic Braxton. Pitt's big man racked up 14 points and 20 rebounds as Georgetown's lead dwindled down until it was 58-53 with 21 seconds left. Blair grabbed another offensive rebound - eight of his 20 were of the offensive variety - and put it back with 15 seconds to go. A mental lapse and a little carelessness on Georgetown's part turned the ball back over, giving Pitt the opportunity to tie, which they quickly took. The only triple Pittsburgh hit after halftime was Bradley Wanamaker's from the corner with 7.2 left, improbably tying the game at 58.

After a Georgetown timeout, the Hoyas made one substitution - putting Chris Wright in for Austin Freeman. Wright is Georgetown's three point specialist; it is not uncommon for all of his shots in a game to come from behind the arc. That was the case this time, as all seven of his attempts were from three, and the seventh was the best, as Wright took a pass from Jessie Sapp, picked up a slight screen from Sapp and fired away from straight on at the top of the key as time expired. The shot hit nothing but net, and the legions of Hoya fans in the stands exploded as Georgetown advanced to their third straight Big East Championship Game in a row, where they will face Louisville or top-ranked Connecticut.
