Tough loss to Russia and it's kind of surprising that Germany got 4 goals but with that beatdown of Finland you seem to be back on track.

yea Germany gave me lots of trouble but I was worried about finland cause of Kiprusoff, but we took him out of the game early with all our goals and Lethonen filled the void but it was too late.

Short Interview With Game Winner Crosby

Reporter: Crosby, just one question. How was the feeling when the buzzer rang and you know that you lead Team Canada to a championship?

Crosby: It was mind blowing knowing that I helped my team to a championship. It was so loud after the buzzer and maybe even louder when Sakic and I stepped on the ice when we were announced as two of the three stars.

Reporters: Thank you for your time, and enjoy celebrating with your teamates.

              Crosby: Thank you I will.

Congratulations on the championship. Switzerland is certainly a relief after battling Russia...9-8 damn! Then again, Canada and Russia is almost like an All-Star game.

Almost from the day he was drafted, Flyers center Mike Richards was referred to by many as the future captain of the club.

On Wednesday, that speculation became a reality, as the 23-year-old fourth year center was named as the 17th captain in franchise history, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

After having four captains in the last four seasons, Richards is likely to be in that position for awhile. His 12-year contract extension, signed last December, kicks in this season.

He was reached for comment while participating in a club-sponsored golf outing in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

“It’s obviously a privilege to be part of such a traditional organization, and be captain of it,” he said. “I am going to do my best to do it. We have a lot of great team leaders right now on our team, and you don’t have to change anything. I think everybody really helps out around the dressing room. There are so many leaders, you just kind of have to do your own thing and more worry about yourself and help out where things are needed.”

                      Richards Signs 12-year contract extension

Richards was asked at the end of last season if he would be ready to be captain this year. At that time he said that he would not be, but according to John Stevens, Richards was just showing respect for the current captain at the time, Jason Smith. Smith signed with the Ottawa Senators in the offseason.

“I think that was a little unfair to Mike,” said Stevens of the questioning. “That was probably a day or two after the season, and I think in his mind, everybody was still on our team and as a player you don’t think of who might not be here. So, I think it was an indication of Mike and the respect he has of the veteran players on our team, and that included Jason Smith at the time. Since then, Smitty has moved on and we feel Mike is a great choice to replace him.”

Richards also spent plenty of time during the offseason thinking about the prospect of becoming the captain. He said that playing a year with Smith, as well as several other established veterans, helped him to learn what it takes to become a good leader.

“I learned a lot from (Jason Smith) last year. He is a great leader, and probably one of the best that I have had. Being around last year with Kimmo (Timonen) and Danny (Briere), it makes it easy when you have so many great leaders and great players around you that you don’t have to do too much.”

The decision was made jointly by Holmgren and Stevens.

We want a guy out there, that when we see him playing, he is representative of the identity of our hockey team. I think Mike is all of that.” - John Stevens

“It is something John and I had talked about over the course of the summer time,” said Holmgren. “John has spent a great deal of time with Mike just to make sure that he is ready for this. I spent some time with Mike since he has been back in town, and we are positive it’s the right time to do this with Mike. We look forward to him being the leader of the Flyers for many years to come.”

                      “I just think
Mike Richards is a player that has all the characteristics we want on our team,” added Stevens. “We want a guy out there, that when we see him playing, he is representative of the identity of our hockey team. I think Mike is all of that.”

A former first round pick with the Flyers in 2003, Richards’ professional accomplishments include winning the Calder Cup with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms in 2005; being named to the NHL Eastern Conference All-Star team in 2008; and being awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy at the conclusion of last season as the Flyers’ team MVP. Richards led the Flyers in scoring (75 points), assists (47) and time on ice (21:30).

                      Timonen and
Simon Gagne will serve as alternate captains for the 2008-09 season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have named center Vincent Lecavalier as team captain, executive vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton announced. Lecavalier, in his 11th year with the Lightning, previously served as captain during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons. Alternate captains will be announced prior to the start of the 2008-09 regular season.

“Vinny has displayed ********* qualities on and off the ice through out his career,” Lawton said. “He is a natural leader in the locker room and sets a great example for others by the way he competes night in and night out. We are extremely proud to have him as captain of the Lightning!”

The franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 273 goals and 602 points in 710 games with the Lightning, Lecavalier, 28, posted 40 goals and 92 points in 81 games in 2007-08, becoming the first Tampa Bay player to record back to back seasons of 40 goals or more. That came on the heels of his 52-goal season in 2006-07 which earned him the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s top goal scorer. A 6-foot-4, 219-pound native of Ile Bizard, Quebec, Lecavalier has scored at least 32 goals in his past five NHL seasons.

A consistent playoff performer, Lecavalier has tallied 18 goals, 33 points and 64 penalty minutes in 45 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. His nine goals and 16 points in 23 games helped lead the Lightning to the 2004 Stanley Cup, and he has six goals and 11 points in 11 games during the Lightning’s past two playoff appearances.

Selected first overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Lecavalier has played in three NHL All-Star Games and has represented Canada in the World Junior Championships (1998), the World Championships (2001), the World Cup (2004, MVP) and the Winter Olympic Games (2006). Lecavalier played two seasons for Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, tallying 86 goals, 132 assists and 218 points in 122 regular season games. Following the 1997-98 season with Rimouski he was ranked as the top North American draft prospect by the Central Scouting Service and was named to the Canadian Hockey League First All-Star Team.

Lecavalier has made community giving and charitable work a part of his daily life since joining the Lightning in 1998. In October of 2007, he made his largest commitment yet to the Tampa Bay community, announcing a $3 million pledge to construct the
Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. Following the 2007-08 season he was awarded a $25,000 grant by the NHL Foundation in recognition of commitment and service to charities in the community. He also received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy as the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution in his community.

Tim Taylor served as Lightning captain the past two seasons, preceded by Dave Andreychuk (2002-03 to 2005-06). The Lightning did not have a designated captain during the 2001-02 season. Paul Ysebaert was named the first captain in team history prior to the 1995-96 season, and others who’ve held the honor are Mikael Renberg (1997-98), Rob Zamuner (1998-99), Bill Houlder (1999-00) and
                        Chris Gratton (1999-00).

The Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin had 33 goals and 55 points in 41 road games during 2007-08 season.
                          Alexander Ovechkin 2007-08 season highlights
Before Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin burst upon the NHL scene, there was Ilya Kovalchuk of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Kovalchuk, who has scored at least 50 points in each of his six NHL seasons, tied his career-high with 52 goals in 2007-08 despite the Thrashers finishing with just 76 points, the second-fewest in the Eastern Conference.

Kovalchuk also exhibited a fine scoring touch on the road last season, registering 49 points to finish in a three-way tie with Ottawa's Jason Spezza and Boston's Marc Savard as the second-highest scoring performers among Eastern Conference players away from the friendly confines of the home arena.

Ovechkin, who also led the League with 112 points, was claimant to the top spot among road-point producers in the League in 2007-08, with 33 goals and 55 points in 41 games away from the Verizon Center.

Here's a look back at last season's top 10 road-point producers in the Eastern Conference:

                          1. Alex Ovechkin, Washington -- There wasn't too much more the standout left wing could have done last season after leading his team in just about every offensive category. In addition to ending the season with the most goals and points on the road, he also had 15 multi-point games away from home, including four goals and an assist in an 8-6 victory in Ottawa on Dec. 29. Ovechkin also finished second in the Eastern Conference scoring race for points on home ice (57).

                          2. Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta -- The two-time NHL All-Star also was a road warrior in 2007-08, collecting 27 goals and 22 assists in 39 road games. Kovalchuk, who had 15 multiple-point games on the road, capped his season by scoring the championship overtime goal for Russia at the World Championships in Quebec City. Kovalchuk holds franchise records with 254 goals and 466 points.

                          3. Jason Spezza, Ottawa -- One of the more electrifying centers in the League, Spezza matched Kovalchuk in the Eastern Conference with 49 road points. His best night away from home was a 2-goal, 2-assist outing in a 4-1 victory in Pittsburgh on Dec. 13. Spezza also finished tied for ninth in scoring on home ice in the East with 43 points. In 322 NHL games spanning five seasons, Spezza has 229 assists and 345 points.

                          4. Marc Savard, Boston -- Savard, 31, continues to post impressive numbers as one of the League's most dominant playmakers. He has registered at least 30 assists in five straight seasons and finished 2007-08 with a League-leading 40 assists on the road to finish tied for second among Eastern Conference scorers with 49 points in 36 games. His finest showing on the road occurred Oct. 12 in Los Angeles, when he had a goal and four assists in an 8-6 victory over the Kings. Savard was named to his first NHL All-Star Game last season, replacing injured Ottawa forward Dany Heatley, and scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds remaining in the third period to give the East an 8-7 triumph over the West.
                          5. Alex Kovalev, Montreal -- It was quite a rebound season for Kovalev, his third full season with the Canadiens. The 35-year-old forward, whose 84 points was the second-best output of his 15-season career, also was a marksman away from Bell Centre in Montreal, posting 28 assists and 46 points on the road. Kovalev, who totaled 47 of his 84 points on the power play, was one of only three Montreal players to perform in all 82 games last season.

                          6. Tomas Plekanec, Montreal -- Plekanec finished the season with career highs in goals (29), assists (40) and points (69) and finished behind Kovalev among Eastern Conference road scorers with 42 points. He also was effective in the playoffs, posting 4 goals and 9 points in 12 games. His most memorable road performance came Oct. 26, when he had 2 goals and 2 assists, all on the power play, in a 7-4 win in Carolina.

                          7. Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh -- Malkin, who finished first among Eastern Conference players in scoring on home ice, posted 26 assists and 42 points away from Mellon Arena. He had 10 multiple-point games and ended the season averaging 1.02 points per game on the road.

                          8. Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa -- Alfredsson has scored at least 80 points in four straight seasons and averaged 1.27 points-per-game in 2007-08 (89 points, 70 games). The 35-year-old right wing finished eighth on the road among Eastern Conference scorers with 40 points, including 26 assists. The Ottawa captain, a five-time NHL All-Star, set a career-high with seven points (three goals) in an 8-4 victory in Tampa Bay on Jan. 24.

                          9. Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay -- Lecavalier collected 39 points in 40 road games last season. He also placed third among Eastern Conference point-producers at home with a 1.29 points-per-game average (53 points, 41 games).

                          10. Jason Pominville, Buffalo -- The 25-year-old forward set career highs last season in with 53 assists and 80 points while playing all 82 games. He also was first on the team in points scored on the road with 39, and No. 10 among Eastern Conference players. Pominville is developing into a perennial 30-goal scorer in the League. He was a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy as the NHL's most gentlemanly player in 2007-08.

"It's tough to say personally what I want to accomplish because everybody wants to improve in every area of their game,” Pominville told the Sabres' Web site. "I just want to be a better player overall (in 2008-09), a better teammate overall and help out so we can make the playoffs.”

Ok guys here's the deal. This dynasty has to wait until October 23rd because that's when I get the game and my 360. So since I'm getting bored I've decided I'm going to do my 08 Penguins dynasty until the date. I will update this one everytime I think or find an update for this. As soon as 09 comes out this starts backup and the 08 one dies down.

Also if you want to see how my updates will be when 09 comes out check the new one out.

Some may see Tuesday's contest between the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres as nothing more than an average preseason game, but Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau knows it is much more than that.

An entire village soon will come together and turn Roberval, Quebec, into Hockeyville -- the annual competition sponsored by Kraft that the city on Lac Saint-Jean won earlier this year. Carbonneau, who is from Sept-Iles, Quebec, is familiar with the area and knows just how much this event will mean to a city with a population of roughly 10,000 people.

"I had the chance to play four years in Chicoutimi, which is about an hour away," Carbonneau told NHL.com. "I've never had the chance to go there too often, but I know the people there are excited. It's always been a corner of the province that really supported the Canadiens. I'm sure I'm going to have a few fans in the stands."

No doubt, Benoit Levesque Arena will be packed. Although the facility can only hold about 1,200 people, another 8,000-10,000 people are expected on the grounds to witness the event outside on a large-screen television.

One has to believe the majority of the people in town will be rooting for Montreal, given it's in the same province. Carbonneau realizes that for many in attendance, this could be their one chance to see the Habs in person.

                                "I think the
Montreal Canadiens -- especially in Quebec -- have always been the No. 1 team," said Carbonneau, who played 13 seasons for the Canadiens. "That part of the province has always been supportive of our team. Every time we have the chance to do those kinds of trips, people are really excited because they don't have the chance to see us too often -- especially on their ice."

                                2008-2009 SEASON PREVIEWS
This is the third year for the Hockeyville promotion, and the second time the Canadiens will participate. In 2006, Salmon River, Nova Scotia, hosted Montreal and the Ottawa Senators in a game the Canadiens won, 7-3. Last season, the Atlanta Thrashers topped the New York Islanders, 4-3 in overtime, in North Bay, Ontario.

Since the inaugural season, the prize money for winning the event has doubled. Roberval received $100,000 from Kraft toward arena upgrades and also put in another $200,000 of its own money. Clearly, the town is excited to host these festivities, which get underway Sunday morning.

"I saw the last couple of years there with the Hockeyville, we had the chance to see how excited the people are to have teams come in," Carbonneau said. "I know there's a lot of work that's been put in to win that contest. At the end of the day, I think it makes a lot of people happy."

Roberval, which is roughly a three-hour drive from Quebec City, is just off the shore of Lac Saint-Jean and is hockey-crazed during the winter months. It was the clear-cut winner in this competition, as it received more than 2 million votes last spring. While it's a pretty long hike from Montreal, Carbonneau knows it will be worthwhile in the end.

"That thing with Hockeyville, it's across the country," Carbonneau said. "I think they do an unbelievable job, just to try to win that contest. It's always fun. You get back to your roots. It's an inconvenience sometimes to go that far, but once you get there and you meet those people, you come out of it with great, great admiration for those people."

While the competition didn't exist during Carbonneau's playing days, the coach said the Canadiens participated in several charity events across Canada during the summer months. No matter how far he was from Montreal, he said it wasn't difficult to find Canadiens fans. The case will be the same in Roberval, but the coach nonetheless is appreciative of the love his organization receives across the country.

"I still remember when I started my career with Montreal, we used to play softball -- anywhere from five to 10 games -- everywhere in Canada," Carbonneau said. "We used to go to small towns, and I couldn't believe in parts of British Columbia or Saskatchewan, in the middle of nowhere, that we had people that loved the
                                Montreal Canadiens."

Surely, Carbonneau understands just how much a victory Tuesday night would mean to the people of Roberval. More importantly, though, Carbonneau's job is to have his team ready for the regular season, which begins Oct. 10 at Buffalo. After finishing atop the Eastern Conference with a 104-point season, Carbonneau and the Habs are out to prove the 2007-08 campaign was legitimate.

"I think everybody's excited," Carbonneau said. "There's always nervousness when you start every season -- it doesn't matter if you had success or not. Nobody wants to have a bad season. We made a lot of strides last year. I think we improved a lot. We made some great transactions this summer to improve our team. I think everybody's anxious to start, to prove that last year was not a fluke."
