    Biggest Lost: Markus Naslund

    Biggest Acquisition: Cody Hodsgon

The Vancouver Canucks were defiently in need of goal scoring players, they got it in cody Hodsgon, but for a very expencive price. Captain Markus Naslund signed a contract with the New York Rangers, and Trevor Linden retired. Can the Canucks Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin become leaders to lead the Canucks to the playoffs? With Roberto Luongo between the pipes, there is a good chance.

      Biggest Lost: Olaf Kolzig

      Biggest Acquisition: Jose Theodore

The Caps have lost a very important player or goalie in Olaf Kolzig, who signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Capitals were able to acquire top goalie Jose Theodore from the Colorado Avalanche. Can Alexander Ovechkin lead the Capitals back into the playoffs and acquire another scoring title?

The Montreal Canadiens are going to host the 2009 NHL All-Star Game. This will be the 57th All Star Game in the NHL. Player favorites to be nominated to the All-Star Game are for the Eastern Confrence:

Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins

Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins

        and for the Western Confrence:

Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames

Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings

Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings

The 58th All-Star Game will not be next year because of the Winter Olympics.

Penguins Interested In Free Agent Mats Sundin

Mats Sundin will be the hardest to acquire because he still hasn't made his decision whether or not to play next year or not.

Stamkos Excited Against Playing Against Penguins In Starter

Tampa Bay Lightning Rookie Stamkos was reported to saying that the Penguins will be an easy first two wins in the pre-season. "They lost almost everyone that helped them get that far into the playoffs against Detroit" said Stamkos

The Penguins did lose most of they're franchise players in Ryan Malone, Ty Conklin, Gary Roberts, and even more important was Marian Hossa, who signed with the very team that beat them in the finals, Detroit Red Wings.

The Penguins did manage to lock up star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for a pretty long time, and Sidney Crosby is going to play in the Penguins uniform for a while, 5 years to be exact. The Penguins did need to re-sign star centerman Evgeni Malkin to a contract. Jordan Staal will be needing a contract renewal this coming off-season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have come from a two man team to an actual stacked team, adding power forward Ryan Malone, who could really help out Vincent Lecavalier from him infront of the net.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have decided to fire GM Ray Shero for his lack of negogiating skills with Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa, who the Penguins were really hoping to keep on the team. "It all went by so quickly, I was looking to lock up Malkin, Fleury and Hossa but they just wouldn't budge about their salary" said Shero. "I was able to get Malkin and Fleury, but when I turned around, Marian Hossa was on the Red Wings, Ryan Malone was on the Lightning and others were gone, I just hope I can get to another team before the season starts".

Jason Skyland was enraged by the words of Steven Stamkos and even Ray Shero. "Ok Ray, this is what your supposed to do when your a General Manager. Step 1 you plan out before the playoffs even start, maybe a week before the regular season ends. Then in Step 2 you watch your players carefully during the playoffs, see if you need to make any changes. The Final Step is to watch for other players and see if they'd play well with the players you got already. It's easy.

Oh and Steven Stamkos is such a punk. You just got drafted, even if we have lost most of our players, we're still gonna cream you easily. You better get it through you thick head.

Sidney Crosby did well for his first year as the team Captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was atop the league in points until the All-Star Game where he was injured from slamming into the boards, legs first. Sidney Crosby stepped into the playoffs and led his team, along with Marc-Andre Fleury stopping the oppisition on every shot, to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Crosby will step into the season with a quest for the Stanley Cup.

Crosby And Staal A Hit In NYC

Penguins Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal were among 14 NHL players who took part in the NHL Player Media Tour this week in New York City.

Sidney Crosby took a breakaway against Martin Brodeur during the video shoot.
Player Media Tour Making an NHL Commercial
It was a concerted effort by the NHL’s marketing department to make top players available for pre-season interviews and promotional spots with the league’s television rightsholders as well as the NHL Network, nhl.com, NHL Radio and national media outlets. Versus, TSN and CBC were among the national networks participating.

“Marketing our players in an authentic manner is of critical importance to the league,” said Brian Jennings, the NHL’s executive vice president of marketing. “Our aim during this season launch time period is to efficiently use our players’ time to capture key story-lines which create compelling content, and to allow the media to capitalize on that content. Based on this year’s results and feedback, we couldn’t have been more pleased.”

In addition to Crosby and Staal, other players participating were Vincent Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers, Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks, Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres, Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames, Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders, and Staal’s brothers – Eric of the Carolina Hurricanes and Marc of the Rangers.

“It’s a fun thing for the parties involved to get in touch with the players before the season starts,” Brodeur told nhl.com. “Promotion of the game is a big thing right now, especially in the days of the internet and TV and how big of an impact each has on the business part of the game. For the young guys and the old guys like myself to commit to come is a great thing.

“We’re a big family and we’re all playing the game we love and trying to grow it for the next kid that comes in.”

Top 5 Helpers In The East

                          1. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins -- Among the NHL’s top 100 all-time assist leaders, only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux retired with more assists than games played. Crosby has a chance to do just that if he just accelerates his current pace, which is already at an otherworldly level.

Crosby will enter the 2008-09 season, his fourth in the NHL, with 195 assists in 213 games. He had 48 assists in 53 games last season after registering 84 in 79 games the year before, when he led the NHL with 125 points and took home the Hart Trophy.

Crosby was slightly better than an assist-per-game player in last season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs (21 in 20 games), when he led the Penguins to the Final while also leading the NHL in assists and points (27).

He lost Marian Hossa from his line, and odds are Evgeni Malkin will center his own line, but that just means Crosby will have to turn someone else – Miroslav Satan? Ruslan Fedotenko? – into a 30-goal scorer.

Flyers see plenty of room to improve
The Philadelphia Flyers emerged from the abyss last season to reach the Eastern Conference finals. What do they plan on doing for an encore this season? Taking the next step, that's what. ...more

Coyotes seek to end non-playoff streak
After five consecutive non-playoff seasons, the Phoenix Coyotes hope the addition of veterans like center Olli Jokinen and the arrival of talented rookies like Kyle Turris will be enough to get them into the postseason. ...more

                          2. Marc Savard, Boston Bruins -- Savard is one of only two players in the NHL who has more than 200 assists since 2005. Joe Thornton is the leader with 231, but Savard runs second with 206. In fact, last season was the first time since 2005 he didn’t register 70 assists.

He finished with 63 on a team that scored only 206 goals. But when Savard registered 74 assists in 2006-07, he also played to a minus-19 rating. While he was helping the team produce goals, he couldn’t help the Bruins keep the puck out of the net.

His assist total dipped by 11 last season, when his point total dropped by 18 from 96 to 78, but Savard was a plus-3 and the Bruins made the playoffs. He became more defensive-minded under coach Claude Julien, who preaches defense first.

This season, Savard could be centering a line that includes Michael Ryder, who is looking to regain his 30-goal form. He had only 14 goals last season, but Savard may be the antidote Ryder needs to pull out of his scoring slump.

                          3. Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins -- You all know the story by now: Crosby goes down with a high-ankle sprain in January. Malkin takes over his own line for the first time in his career. Malkin dominates and leads the Penguins surge to the top of the Eastern Conference. Crosby returns to lead the team to the Stanley Cup Final. Malkin continues to center his line.

Malkin finished last season with 59 assists to go along with his 47 goals. He finished second behind Alexander Ovechkin in points with 106 and sixth in the NHL in assists. He is truly one of the game’s most dynamic talents.

Malkin should enter the season centering his own line again. It’s likely that Petr Sykora is back on his right side, but with Ryan Malone in Tampa Bay, coach Michel Therrien could choose to slot Jordan Staal on the left.

Staal was the team’s third-line center last season and one of its best faceoff guys, and he’s big, physical, rangy and fearless. He could be exactly what Malone was last season, when Malkin was getting him the puck and piling up the assists.

                          4. Jason Spezza, Ottawa Senators --Spezza has the third most assists among Eastern Conference forwards during the last three seasons, trailing Savard and Crosby. He has 182 after helping on 58 goals last season while playing a lot of the time with Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, who each reached the 40-goal plateau.

If new coach Craig Hartsburg decides to keep that trio together – although it is lumping a lot of offense on one line – Spezza could see another season of 60-70 assists. The only reason he didn’t hit the 70-mark last season was because of injuries.

He missed six games while Alfredsson and Heatley combined to miss 23. Spezza’s 58 assists were seventh in the NHL and his 92 points were a career high.

                          5. Nicklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals -- It took an unfortunate injury to fellow countrymen Michael Nylander, who was sort of Backstrom’s father figure in North America, for Backstrom to start running his own line with Alexander Ovechkin on his left side.

Ovechkin wound up pumping in 65 goals and Backstrom finished with 55 assists, the most among any rookie last season.

It remains to be seen if Backstrom, Nylander or Sergei Fedorov will center Ovechkin this season, but Backstrom has become one of the leading passers in the game, which is what he was advertised as when Washington took him fourth overall in 2006.

Raw and lacking in confidence at the beginning of the season, Backstrom developed chemistry, both on and off the ice, with Ovechkin last season and he flourished. If he finds it again, he could reach 70 assists or more this season, easily.

Evgeni Malkin was able to fit right into his role when Captain Sidney Crosby went out with an ankle injury. Malkin evolved into a team leader, learning that he has the skills to be atop of the league and came in second in the points leaders, below only Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin. "Geno" Malkin is ready to have an even better year for the 2008-2009 season.
