Coaching Legacy of Coach G (CH2K"9")

    Settings:
    Difficulty: MOP
    Half Length: 10 minute halves
Rosters: 2009 Rosters made by Operationsports Group effort
Rules: No Recruiting of foreign players at all

Looking to start a career dynasty that can last many many years. Looking to start with VMI because I like their color scheme and the way that they play in real life is an intriguing aspect to me. However, I won't be able to put up that many points with the time for each half that I have intact, however, on a good day I hope to get up to about 80 points.

    Lexington, VA
VMI has hired a new coach after an exhaustive search. However, the coaching name isn't familiar to anyone. Coach G accepts the offer to take over the Keydets out of nowhere. He wasn't a high school coach, he wasn't a college coach. Coach G applied for the job, sighting only experience playing basketball in high school. The administration was wowed by the time and thought that he put into the interview and are hoping for a great outcome from the suprise hire. The Keydets have never been to a Final Four and only have 3 NCAA tournament bids in their entire history. The last being in 1977.

        Hangar Classic

        vs. Northern Colorado

        74-45

The Keydets didn't know what to expect under the guidance of coach G. However, the players definitely played to their full ability in the opening game. VMI started out scorching the nets from everywhere on the court. At the Half, the Keydets led 42-19. In the 2nd Half it was much of the same as the Keydets extended their lead and coasted to victor 74-45. The Keydets were led by their senior leader Chavis Holmes who led the team with 31 points. Sargent added 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Keydets shot 30/59 from the field and 10/27 from 3.

        1-0

        Hangar Classic Final

        vs. Air Force

        63-67 OT

If VMI thought that the transition early in the season to Coach G's style of play was going to be easy just ask Chavis Holmes. He had 31 in the first game, but struggled to find his shot in the Hangar Classic Final. VMI started off well. Sargent was dominant down low with 12 points in the first half, finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds on the game. However, Air Force dominated the game in the 2nd half. Coming back to tie the game at 49 to send it into OT. In the Overtime period, the Falcons made key shots down the stretch while VMI was unable to convert. Chavis Holmes had 16 points and 5 assists, but was just 6/20 from the field.

          O'Reilly CBE Classic Pod D

          East Lansing, MI

          vs. UL-Monroe

          86-69 OT

I'm not sure what it is about these early season tournaments, but VMI seems to play very well in the opeing round games. ULM was quick out of the gate. They led at the break 31-21. The 2nd half belonged to Chavis Holmes. He led the Keydets back late in the 2nd half to tie the game at 61 heading into OT. In overtime, it was all VMI. ULM was outscored 25-8 in the extra period. Chavis Holmes finished the game with 42 points on 14/29 shooting and was 10/17 from 3. Travis Holmes also contributed 15 points 5 rebounds 3 assists and 4 steals. VMI now faces the home team in this portion of the CBE bracket Michigan State. It should be a nice test to see where the Keydets stand this season.

          2-1

          CBE Pod Final

          vs. #8 Michigan State

          60-58

VMI learned today that it could win the big game when the going got tough. This game was close from the onset. Michigan State struggled all day to find a shooter that could make shots when they really needed one. However, they led at the break 32-31. It was again Chavis Holmes who was the leader for the Keydets with 25 points and 5 assists. He was 10/22 from the field including 5 3 pointers. Stephen Sargent allowed some of the pressure to be released from Holmes. He was able to get key buckets down the stretch and poured in 15 pionts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Chris Allen led Michigan State with 18 points, but he was the only player in double figures as the defense for the Keydets clamped down on most of the solid big men for the Spartans.

            11/22 vs. James Madison

            66-57

The Keydets had their first game at home in VA and their first time to show off their fancy new win over a top 25 opponent. However, James Madison quickly snatched their glory by jumping out to a 32-28 half time lead over VMI. Once again, the Keydets found a way down the stretch to play much better basketball and found a way to win by 9. Chavis Holmes was the only player in double figures. He led the Keydets with 31 points including 8/18 from 3. This is truly his team to lead and he has done a magnificent job early in the season. He is currently 2nd in the nation behind Scottie Reynolds of Villanova in scoring.

            4-1

            O'Reilly CBE Classic

vs. Missouri in Kansas City, MO

            63-51

This might as well have been a home game for the Missour Tigers. They were playing in one of the biggest cities in MO and were definitely the favorite to advance to the finals of the CBE Classic. VMI once again had a terrible start to the game. Missouri led by 7 at halftime 27-22. However, the Keydets once again proved that they were a 2nd half team. Their defense over the course of the game only improved. Every player that entered the game for the Tigers scored, however, no one scored in double figures. Chavis Holmes contributed 27 points, but the player of the game for the Keydets has to be Stephen Sargent. He has been a force down low and his size makes it easy to score and defend. He had 9 points 11 rebounds and 5 blocks against the Tigers and the Keydets outscored the Tigers 41-24 in the 2nd half.

            5-1

            O'Reilly CBE Classic FINAL

vs. #3 UCLA in Kansas City, MO

This was the most complete game for the Keydets this year. They were the most efficient that they have been under Coach G. Chavis Holmes had a perfect first half. He was 7/7 from the field and 3/3 from 3 point range with 18 points in the first half. The Keydets started the game on a 9-0 run. They led by as many as 11 (19-8) and finished the first half with an 31-23 lead. Holmes didn't cool down much in the 2nd half either. He finished with 33 points on 12/15 shooting and 5/7 from 3. Once again Stephen Sargent was a factor. He didn't score many points this game, but he was once again effective down low. He had 6 points 5 rebounds and 4 blocks. Josh Shipp and Darren Collison each had 14 points for the Bruins as they fell for the first time this season.

              Columbus, OH

              at #12 Ohio State

              56-54

VMI started the game on a 15-8 run. Ohio state cuts the lead to 24-22 with a run led by 3 Jon Diebler 3 pointers. VMI countered with their own run of 13-7 to extend their lead at half time to 35-29. Travis Holmes had 10 points and Chavis had 16 points. Jon Diebler led Ohio State with 12 at the break. In the 2nd half it was back and forth. OSU came back to take the lead, but VMI responded. With 44 seconds left and up by 1 SO PF Quinn Brownfield hit a layup to put VMI up 54-51. He then hit 2 free throws to give the Keydets a 5 point lead. As time expired Nikola Kecman hit a 3 pointer to make the final difference 2 points. VMI was led by Chavis Holmes who had 18 points and OSU was led by Jon Diebler, who was almost unguardable in the 2nd half, with 24 points.

                  Lexington, VA

                  vs. Army

                  63-49

The Keydets came out lethargic and cold from the field early on against the Black Knights of Army. They found themselves down 10-3 early in the 1st half. Then later on they trailed 25-16 after a late half 8-0 run by theh black knights, who led 31-20 at the half. VMI shot 27% in the first half. However, once again VMI came out guns blazing in the 2nd half. A quick 11-2 run to start the second half, cut the lead to 33-31. After minutes of trailing by between two and four points, VMI was finally able to take the lead 44-43 on a 3 pionter by Holmes with 4:20 remaining in the game. Army had put up a good fight early in the game, but this was the last time that they would see the lead. VMI ended the game on a 22-6 run. Army was outscored 43-18 in the 2nd half. Chavis Holmes had his worst game of the year scoring 24 points, however, he shot 9/28 from the field including 3/16 from 3. Travis Holmes on the other had had his best game of the year with 23 points and Stephen Sargent again was solid inside with 8 points 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Army was led by one scorer in double figures SO SG Rickey Royal with 10 points.

I wish you luck with the Keydets.

I started out with them when I first started my coaching career and was amazed at how good a shooter Reggie Williams was. I even got VMI to the Sweet Sixteen my first season so that shows how good he was at adapting to a new playbook and how well Chavis & Travis Holmes adjusted as well.

As a "former coach" of VMI, I will be following to see how you and your changes work.

                      12/4 at South Carolina State

                      61-29

SC State was completely slowing down the game. Every possession that they had they ran their SG across the lane through traffic to the opposite corner where the ball was. Combine that with a lack of shooting for the Keydets and SCSU had an advantage. They took a 13-5 lead midway through the first half. However, VMI went on a 20-2 run to end the half and flexed a little defensive muscle taking a 25-14. Chavis Holmes had 10 points in the first half for the Keydets and SR PF Jason Johnson led SCSU with 4 points. SCSU quickly answered with a 6-0 run to begin the half and cut the lead to 5 points. However, VMI once again used a 20-2 run to lengthen its lead. VMI outscored SCSU 36-15 in the second half. They allowed a season low 29 points and held SCSU to 33% shooting from the field. Chavis Holmes once again led the Keydets with 28 points including 4/8 from beyond the arc. Travis Holmes chipped in 13 points and 2 rebounds. SR PG Jessie Burton led the Bulldogs with 10 points and 3 rebounds.

Thanks for following. The Keydets have a different feel with out Williams as I am using the 2k9 set of rosters, so I was not fortuntate enough to have him here. I did use VMI in 2k7, and Williams was a complete beast. Looking forward to the conference schedule. Next year could be difficult as I will lose the Holmes boys. I might struggle to score and be forced to use the big man Stephen Sargent for points.

                          vs. Howard

                          60-52

This game was the complete opposite of the last. Howard came out of the gate running a fast paced offense. The first half was very even. There were no huge runs and Howard led by as many as 5 and VMI led by as many as 3. Howard took a 28-26 lead into the break. Chavis Holmes had 12 points. Howard shot 55% in the first half led by FR PG Chris McHenry with 11 points. The 2nd Half began much like the first. The teams were even after 2 minutes into the 2nd half, then VMI went on a 12-0 run with 6 minutes to go to extend their lead to 8 points. The Keydets would never look back. Chavis Holmes had 19 points in the 2nd half to finish with 31 points and 4 rebounds. VMI contained McHenry in the 2nd half to finish with 13 points. VMI's offense was a little contained as no one else finished in double figures.

                          10-1
