    Paradise Jam Tournament - St. Pete Times Forum

    11/13 1st Round vs. Illinois-Chicago (0-0)

    81-57

    Coach G didn't really know what to expect from this team. He had high expectations after the conference championship last season with mostly freshman and sophomores. VMI got off to a great start. They began the game on a 17-3 run. However, UIC showed that it wasn't going to go away quickly. They simply chipped away at the lead and were able to tie the game at 31-31 at the break. VMI had a lapse when they took out the starters. They couldn't find a way to score. UIC shot 51% in the first half and were led by SR SF Tori Boyd with 9 points and 5 rebounds. VMI shot 40% including 6/16 FR SG Eddie McCalebb scored 11 points and SO SG Dan Bachanan added 9. VMI came out in the 2nd half to put the Flames away. They used a 13-1 run to start the 2nd half and open up a 44-32 lead. The lead would only balloon from there. VMI led by as many as 30 and went on to win 81-57.

    VMI
    FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 27 points including 7/13 from 3.
    SO SG Dan Buchanan - 18 points 5 assists
    JR C Stephen Sargent - 14 points and 10 rebounds
    JR PF Andre Blue - 13 points 6 rebounds 5 steals (1/1 from 3)

    UIC
    SR SF Tori Boyd - 14 points 7 rebounds
    SR PG Robo Kreps - 12 points 4 assists

        Paradise Jam Tournament - St. Pete Times Forum

        Semifinals - vs. #9 North Carolina (3-0)

        84-57

        VMI looks like they are a much improved team, both offensively and defensively. The addition of the recruits and another season under Coach G have really made a difference thus far. UNC came into the game unbeaten and ranked #9 in the country, however, it was the Keydets that looked like they should have been ranked. VMI once again started the game with an assault of 3s, breaking out to a 14-0 run. After just 3 minutes, the lead increased to 21-5. VMI wouldn't be done there. Their defense was just too much for the Tarheels early on and the lead was 31-14 with 3 minutes left in the first half. VMI would take the lead into the break 45-23. VMI was shooting 69% including 6/11 on 3s. UNC shot 45% in the first half. JR PF Andre Blue rolled in 13 points at the break, SO SG Dan Buchanan had 15 and FR SG Eddie McCalebb had 11. The 2nd half was more of the same and the Keydets rolled. It was 75-43 with 3 minutes left in the game and the Keydets rolled to a 27 point win.

        VMI
        FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 14 points 2 rebounds (4/6 from 3)
        SO SG Dan Buchanan - 30 points 4 assists (6/8 from 3)
        JR PF Andre Blue - 19 points 5 rebounds 10 steals
        JR C Stephen Sargent - 12 points 5 rebounds 2 blocks

        UNC
        SR SF William Graves - 19 points 2 rebounds
        FR SG Michal Munoz - 11 points 3 assists 3 steals

            Paradise Jam Tourament Finals - St. Pete Times Forum

            vs. Kansas State Wildcats (3-0)

            74-61

            The Championship game of the Paradise Jam was a little tougher than the other games for the Keydets. They found themselves in a battle early on in the game. They were down 9-3 early in the 1st half, but used an 8-0 run to take an 11-9 lead. VMI then led 23-20 midway through the first half. Again, VMI was lighting it up from the outside. VMI took a 33-30 into the break. FR SG EddieMcCalebb had 13 points on 3/5 from 3 in the 1st half. VMI shot 52% and KSU shot 52%. Early in the 2nd half, VMI used a 12-4 run to take a 45-34 advantage and would try and maintain that lead throughout the half. It was 49-44 midway through the 2nd half. VMI was able to extend the lead to 61-51 with 2:30 remaining. After a few fouls and missed attempts by Kansas State, VMI was able to start opening up the lead once again down the stretch. It was 65-57 with one minute remaining. VMI then went on to win by 13.

            VMI
            FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 21 points (5/10 from 3)
            SO SG Dan Buchanan - 17 points 4 assists (3/8 from 3)
            JR PF Andre Blue - 15 points 9 rebounds
            JR C Stephen Sargent - 11 points 8 rebounds

            Kansas State

                Yeah and so does Blue. Too bad you only have his services for two years at VMI.

                  For some reason I really have a knack for playing with the big men, even if they aren't highly rated. Sargent is only a 59, but his size makes up for it at 7'1" and he seems to always be around the ball for offensive rebounds. Blue makes it a lot easier since he has a jumper and a lot more athleticism. This team seems like it could be very good. McCalebb is the best shooter I have ever played with in this game. He seems to make everything when he is open. I love the animation for his shot, its a little quicky, but its awesome. He could be the 3rd Frosh in a row for these Keydets.

                  Thanks for following.

                    11/17 at #9 Duke (3-0)

                    73-68

                    Walking into Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time was a little bit of shock and awe for the Keydets. They didn't know what to expect, but they were prepared for a terrific environment against the Blue Devils. Duke was in a rebuilding mode. They were starting 2 Jrs, 2 Soph, and 1 Fr. VMI was able to jump the gun and come out on fire. VMI made 10 3 pointers in the first half which was much of their offense and was able to jump out to a 43-34 lead at the break. FR SG Eddie McCalebb had 12 points at the break, while SO SG Dan Buchanan added 10 for the Keydets. The 2nd half was a little different. VMI only connected on 5 of their threes, ending the game 15/33 from the 3 point line. However, it was still enough despite a late Duke rally which cut the lead to as little as 3 points with 1 minute remaining. McCalebb led the Keydets with 22 points on 6/13 from 3. Buchanan added 17 pionts on 4/12 from 3. Duke was able to have 3 plays in double figures, but it wasn't enough against the red hot Keydets.

                    VMI
                    FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 22 points 3 assists (6/13 from 3)
                    SO SG Dan Buchanan - 17 points 2 rebounds (4/12 from 3)
                    JR C Stephen Sargent - 10 points 8 rebounds
                    JR PF Andre Blue - 7 points 10 rebounds

                    Duke
                    SO PG Hans Newsom - 14 points 6 assists
                    JR SG Elliot Williams - 16 points 4 rebounds
                    JR SF Olek Czyz - 10 points 6 rebounds

                      11/22 vs. Bowling Green (6-1)

                      91-69

                      "When you see a break out performance from a freshman, you know you have something special," Coach G said. Well that is exactly what Coach G has in Eddie McCalebb. He was absolutly spectacular against the Falcons. VMI didn't have any trouble with them either. VMI sprinted out to a 49-37 lead in the first half. In the 2nd, Bowling Green just couldn't keep up the pace any longer. VMI ended up winning by 22 and the Falcons were just out played by McCalebb and company. He hit 8 3 pointers, a new career high and finished with a game high 30 points. Also, 3 other Keydets were in double figures as well.

                      VMI
                      FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 30 points 4 assists (11/16 FG, 8/13 3s)
                      SO SG Dan Buchanan - 22 points 5 assists (4/9 3s)

                      JR C Stephen Sargent - 12 points 7 rebounds

                      Bowling Green
                      SR SG Adrion Graves - 18 pionts 4 assists
                      SR PG Joe Jakubowski - 13 points 11 assists
                      SO PF Sterling Banjo - 10 points 7 rebounds

                      78-73

                      VMI continued its hot streak as it entered El Paso. VMI started out a little sloppy. They were down 20-17 early in the first half, but were able to rally for the 36-33 lead at the break. In the 2nd half, VMI again was able to outscore the Miners, however, this time only 42-40. VMI was led by SO SG Dan Buchanan with 24 points on 9/19 shooting. VMI was not as hot from the field as they had been in previous games, however, they were able to pull out the win tonight. They were a mere 10/28 from 3. They were able to stave off the Miners by 5 points, 78-73 for their 6th win of the season.

                      VMI
                      SO SG Dan Buchanan - 24 points 5 steals (6/14 from 3)
                      FR SG Eddie McCalebb - 16 points 4 rebounds 4 assists (4/11 from 3)

                        11/27 #22 at Louisville (3-1)

                        89-93 2 OT

                        The game started out well for the Keydets. They went on a 14-9 run to start the game. With 3 minutes left they were down 20-19 to the Cardinals. However, VMI countered and was able to take a 28-24 lead into the break. VMI shot 44% led by SO SG Dan Buchanan with 10 and FR SG Eddie McCalebb with 10 points as well. JR SF George Goode led Louisville with 7 points and they shot 45% in the first half. Early in the 2nd half, VMI found themselves trailing 38-36. VMI again responded to tied the game 51-51 with 2:45 left. VMI also led 58-55 with 1 minute left, but FR SG Logon Cohen was able to tie the game 58-58 to send the game into OT. In the extra period it was 73-73 with 1 minute left. VMI couldn't hit the game winner and we were sent into a 2nd OT. In the 2nd overtime it was all Louisville. VMI mounted a comeback after trailing 80-73 with 3:36 left. They were able to take a 85-84 lead with 1:45 left. However, after that VMI had nothing left in the tank. "We used all our energy in the 2nd OT to come back and take the lead, then we couldn't hit a shot down the stretch to grab it again," Coach G explained. VMI dropped their first game of the season.

                          Press Conference:

                          Reporter: How is your team responding to its first loss of the season?

                          Coach G: I think they are dealing with it well. We have a very young team, with 1 freshman, 3 juniors, and a sophomore starting, therefore we don't have too high of expectations for this year. We did start off really well, but we have to continue to grow as the year goes on. Louisville did make the Final Four last season as a number 1 seed. Therefore, their program is one of the top programs in the country. You can't get too far down when you lose to a program like that in double overtime.

                          Reporter: What is the most suprising aspect of the team this year?

                          Coach G: There are a few. How well we have shot the three pointer has been suprising. Eddie McCalebb has been on fire for the first 7 games of the season. He is a freshman and has one of the sweetest strokes from 3 that I have ever seen. Also, I am shocked at how well our big guys are playing together. Andre Blue and Stephen Sargent have really locked down the paint and controlled the rebounding in all the games we have played. Blue is a beast, it is a shame that he is already a Junior.

                          Reporter: I know that you turned down job offers in the off-season from great mid-major programs around the country such as Southern Illinois (MVC) and Western Kentucky (Sun Belt). What programs could draw you away from VMI?

                          Coach G: That is a rough question. I am really focused on VMI for this year and building the program like I said in the off-season. It would take a pretty special opportunity to draw me away from the program that I am building.

                          Report: Any comment on the signing of Jackie Camper?

                          Coach G: I will address the recruits that have signed with us after the recruiting signing period has ended on Sunday. Thank you all for the questions.

                            12/1 vs. Ohio Bobcats (3-3)

                            72-49

                            Coming off their first loss of the season, the VMI Keydets were looking to rebound with a win against the Bobcats. However, they not only responded to the adversity, but they responded in a big way. VMI ran out of the gates and was not only solid on offense, but they were great on the defensive end. They held the Bobcats to merely 21 points in the first half and took a 33-21 lead into the break. The 2nd half was more of the same as the Keydets won by 23 points with a 72-49 victory.

                                Overall N/A

                                Skills = A-
                                Defense = B
                                Athleticism = B+
                                Rebounding = C
                                Intelligence = B
                                Potential = C+
                                Size = C+

                                Camper looks like a good shooting point guard that can run the VMI team like they want. They need a shooter at the point that has the ability to hit the open shot when their other shooters are all doubled or covered.

                                VMI Continues to recruit a few players:
