Lan's Minnesota Twins (The Show 09)

Minneapolis (AP) - Year after year the Minnesota Twins contend in the American League Central, often times when they are unexpected to. They are a true testament to the strength of having a deep farm system as for the most part they build strictly from within. After all, they are a small market team, and can't (or won't) afford to do it any other way. Unfamiliar faces can quickly become household names around major league baseball. However, it's usually the unfamiliar faces that get the job done for the Twins with the familiar constant of Ron Gardenhire.

Ron Gardenhire has been with the Twins organization for over 21 years now, starting off back in 1988 as a manager for the Twins single A affiliate. He would work his way up to the major leagues in just 3 years, and would be the club's 3rd base coach for 11 years from the Twins World Series Championship in 1991 up through 2002 before replacing Tom Kelly as manager. Over seven years as the Twins manager, Gardenhire has posted a 621-509 record, leading the team to four playoff appearances, and just one season under the .500 mark. However, they have been unable to make it past the ALCS.

As far as household names go, everyone knows about Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Joe Nathan. Batting champ, MVP, and arguably the most consistent closer in baseball. However, it's the names that you don't necessarily hear outside of Minnesota that are the strength of the ballclub. These players tend to bring a very fundamentally sound skillset to the table and perform in relative anonymity. And that is how the Twins get the job done, with good solid fundamental baseball. They will not beat themselves. The organization values control pitchers first and foremost and you will find that control in everyone from Liriano to Glen Perkins in that rotation. Offensively, this isn't a team that is going to wow you with big power hitters, or exciting superstar base stealers, or anything of the like. It's a team that prides themselves on the basics. Situational hitting, moving the runners along, hit and run, bunting when they have to, they simply know how to manufacture runs.

In 2008 the Twins came within a one game playoff with the Chicago White Sox of making the playoffs. This was with a team that was not expected to be anywhere close to competing after losing their marquee pitcher in Johan Santana, and their star center fielder, Torii Hunter to trade and free agency respectively. They absolutely proved everyone wrong, and it was a 100% team effort. Morneau and Mauer, of course shouldered the offensive load, while a young staff featuring Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins, Nick Blackburn, and Francisco Liriano shined, providing further proof that homegrown talent is the way to go.

In 2009 the Twins will look to mature further and build on their successes of 2008. A young pitching staff will have a year of valuable experience under their belt as Slowey, Perkins, and Blackburn all are just second year starters in the big leagues. Liriano will look to build on his strong second half performance from last season after early struggles and demotion to AAA. Offensively, we hope to see Casilla, Span, and Gomez build on their limited major league experience and provide the Twins offense with some spark as all three players can really wreak havoc on the basepaths. Will Delmon Young discover a power stroke? Will Cuddyer and Crede rebound from injury plagued seasons? Let's find out.

Re: Lan's Minnesota Twins (The Show 09)

2009 Season Preview - Position Players

        Catcher - Joe Mauer
        2008 Stats: .328 9 HR 85 RBI

Joe Mauer is hands down the best hitting catcher in all of baseball. He is remarkably consistent and hits both sides of the plate well, and actually hit .361 vs. lefties last season as opposed to .312 vs. right handers. While he lacks big time home run power, he will give you a solid .315+ batting average and will rarely get himself out at the plate. He is one of the tougher guys in the league to strikeout, as he went down on strikes just 50 times in 536 ABs last season. Joe is no slouch behind the plate either as he threw out 36% of basestealers (29 out of 80) in 2008 and 41% for his career.

        First Base - Justin Morneau
        2008 Stats: .300 23 HR 129 RBI

Justin has really developed into one of the more consistent RBI men in the league. He has driven in 129, 111, and 130 over the past three seasons and does it without overwhelming power numbers. He has gotten progressively better hitting against left handed pitching, but still sees a majority of production coming against righties. Morneau brings stability and durability to the team as he played all 163 games last season, and 157 each the previous two and is a solid, if unspectacular fielder.

        Second Base - Alexi Casilla
        2008 Stats: 281 7 HR 50 RBI 7 SBs

Alexi's 2008 numbers don't do him justice as a player. He had an excellent first half of the season hitting .315 4 HR 36 RBI and 29 runs scored in 200 at bats. He suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb and played through that injury throughout the second half of the season even though it greatly hampered his production as he hit just .243 in the second half because of it. Casilla reminds us a lot a Luis Castillo type player. He won't hit for much power but he should be a consistent .290-.300 hitter and can steal 20-30 bases. His biggest issue right now is his fielding. He has +range due to his speed, but is an erratic thrower.

        Third Base - Joe Crede
        2008 Stats: .248 17 HR 55 RBI

Joe has spent the better part of the last three seasons plagued with various injuries. However, when healthy he is a very productive third baseman. He has 20-30 HR pop and is another tough guy to strike out. He won't hit for much of an average though, and doesn't get himself on base often via the walk. There is some question as to his true defensive ability as last year he was downright awful committing 20 errors in just 97 games, and 4 in 46 in 2007. However, prior to that in 2006 and 2005 he was a superb defensive player committing just 10 errors in 130 and 149 games. It remains to be seen what Crede the Twins will get on the field, but whatever Crede they get can't possibly be a worse fielder than Harris or Buscher.

        Shortstop - Nick Punto
        2008 Stats: .284 2 HR 28 RBI 15 SBs

Nick is definitely one of those throwback shortstops from back when shortstops were there for their defense, and not their bat. He is a well above average fielder at multiple positions. He's really more of a utility guy, but with the absence of anyone better to put at shortstop, he gets the starting nod. He won't really do much at all with the bat. His biggest strength is his situational hitting; the ability to move runners over, or sacrifice into scoring position.

        Left Field - Delmon Young
        2008 Stats: .290 10 HR 69 RBI 14 SBs

Delmon Young catches a lot of undue flak from the media for his opposite field approach at the plate. They feel it hampers his power numbers and that he needs to pull the ball to be more useful. Personally, as long as Delmon is hitting close to .300 and getting himself on base, then I don't see what the major problem is. I think expectations have been set a little too high for him as far as the power numbers go.

        Center Field - Carlos Gomez
        2008 Stats: .258 7 HR 59 RBI 33 SBs

Gomez was a pretty big flop in his rookie season due mainly to his utter lack of plate discipline. He has the speed of a leadoff hitter, but his inability to get on base caused him to get bumped from the top of the order in favor of Denard Span. Carlos has electric speed, a solid glove, and a strong arm, and those assets will keep him in the lineup, but in order for him to be effective he's going to have to become a more efficient basestealer, and get on base more consistently. With Michael Cuddyer now healthy, if Gomez can't get it together then we could easily see Span take over in center and Cuddyer take Gomez's place in the lineup.

        Right Field - Denard Span
        2008 Stats: .294 6 HR 47 RBI 18 SBs

Denard Span came up partway through the season due to Cuddyer's injury and never gave the Twins an opportunity to boot him out of the lineup. Span provided the Twins with prototypical leadoff hitter abilities and quickly knocked Gomez out of the #1 spot. In just 347 ABs Span managed to score 70 runs on the strength of a .294 batting average and 50 walks for a .387 on base %. He also demonstrated the ability to hit for extra bases with 16 doubles, 7 triples, and 6 home runs. Barring a sophomore slump, Span looks to easily score 100+ runs leading off for the Twins this season.

        Designated Hitter - Jason Kubel
        2008 Stats: .272 20 HR 78 RBI

Kubel had somewhat of a breakout year last year and really provided the Twins with a little bit of protection behind Mauer and Morneau in the lineup. However, Kubel is pretty much strictly a DH, and strictly a platoon type player and he has no aptitude to hit lefties whatsoever, and is an atrocious fielder (in fact the picture you see here, is the only time you'll ever see him field a ball). He does have the ability to hit 15-20 HRs and drive in 70-80, so he will be the primary DH.

        Bench

Michael Cuddyer - Cuddyer will platoon with Kubel at DH, and will spell the corner outfield positions on occasion.
Brendan Harris - Utility infielder. Primarily at SS, and 3B.
Mike Redmond- Backup catcher. Solid hitter for average, no pop whatsoever. One of the better backup catchers in the league.
Matt Tolbert - Utility infielder. Primarily at 2nd Base.

Re: Lan's Minnesota Twins (The Show 09)

2009 Season Preview - Starting Pitchers

          Starting Pitcher - Francisco Liriano
          2008 Stats: 6-4 3.91 ERA 67 Ks.

Liriano returned in 2008 after missing the entire 2007 season due to elbow surgery. He struggled mightily in his first three starts of the season and was demoted to AAA with an 11.32 ERA. He returned to the Twins in August and was dominant going 4-0 with a 1.23 in August, and finished off the season with 11 starts, a 6-1 record, 2.74 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 65 IP. Liriano's main concern is his control as he walked 32 batters in just 76 IP on the season. He features a fastball that averages out around 91 mph, an 84 mph slider, and a 82 mph changeup, all with +movement.

          Starting Pitcher - Scott Baker
          2008 Stats: 11-4 3.45 ERA 141 Ks

Baker is the staff "veteran" heading into his 4th season with the Twins, although it will only be his second full season. He struggled in his first two go-arounds posting a 6.37 ERA in 2006 and a 4.26 ERA in 2007 but came into his own last season. He has excellent control of all four of his pitches and will rarely walk himself into trouble. Although he tends to be more of a flyball pitcher, he allowed just 20 HRs in 172 IP. He features a 4 seam fastball in the low 90s, an 82 mph changeup and slider, and a 78 mph curve. He will go either of the four pitchers at any time which is what makes him as effective as he is.

          Starting Pitcher - Kevin Slowey
          2008 Stats: 12-11 3.99 ERA 123 Ks

Kevin Slowey pretty much is the definition of a control pitcher. He walked just 24 batters in 160 IP in 2008 in his first full season in the majors. He features pretty much the same exact same pitching arsenal as Scott Baker, with the exception of a substantially slower curveball at 74 mph, and a 86 mph slider. The bigger differentials in speed tend to make one believe that he'll be a bit more effective in the long run, especially when you consider his control.

          Starting Pitcher - Nick Blackburn
          2008 Stats: 11-11 4.05 ERA 96 Ks

Nick is another one of the Twins control pitchers. And it's really quite surprising how effective he managed to be as he did not miss very many bats all season long. He managed to keep his ERA at a respectable 4.05 despite allowing 224 hits in 193 IP. His success stemmed from the fact that he throws 5 pitches effectively, and was just as likely to throw you something off-speed or a breaking pitch as he was to his fastball. In fact, he only threw his fastball 49% of the time while mixing in a cutter, curve, slider, and a change and managed to keep the ball on the ground 45% of the time.

          Starting Pitcher - Glen Perkins
          2008 Stats: 12-4 4.41 ERA 74 Ks

Of all the Twins starters I really see Glen as the most likely to fall short of being an effective starter. He relies far too much on his fastball, and despite his good control, isn't tough at all to hit. He has a propensity to give up a lot of long balls because of the fact that he falls in love with the fastball (25 in 151 IP). He's either going to have to mix it up more on the mound, or he could easily lose his spot in the rotation.

Re: Lan's Minnesota Twins (The Show 09)

            2009 Season Preview - Bullpen

            Long Reliever - Boof Bonser
            2008 Stats: 3-7 5.93 ERA 97 Ks

The less we have to use this guy the better. Bonser quickly went from being a semi-useful starter to pure garbage in about half a season's time. He's just simply not all that hard to hit out there on the mound. Could very easily lose his relief job to Phillip Humber or R.A. Dickey.

            Middle Reliever - Matt Guerrier
            2008 Stats: 6-9 5.19 ERA 59 Ks

Matt Guerrier had kind of an awful year out of the pen for the Twins last year which is very uncharacteristic of him considering his reliability in the past. In 2007 he was one of the Twins best relievers posting a 2.35 ERA in 88 IP. We'll be looking for him to bounce back, but in order for him to do that he needs to rectify his newfound control issues that he ran into last season.

            Middle Reliever - Luis Ayala
            2008 Stats: 2-10 5.71 ERA 50 Ks 9 saves

Ayala struggled mightily in 2008 for the Nats and Mets after being a solid setup man for as long as anyone can remember. He never has posted big strikeout numbers but was able to get the job done by avoiding walks and pitching to contact. Unfortunately for him last year he pitched to too much contact and wound up getting rocked. The Twins are taking a chance on him and hoping he returns back to his career form.

            [b]Middle Reliever[b] - Jose Mijares
            2008 Stats: 0-1 0.87 ERA 5 Ks

Mijares impressed in his September call-up allowing just 3 hits and 1 run in 10 IP. He is expected to fill the role left by Dennys Reyes who left via free agency. However, he is more versatile than Reyes in that he can pitch to both right handed and left handed hitters. It remains to be seen how good he actually is, however, as he appeared in only 10 games at the major league level.

            Setup Man - Jesse Crain
            2008 Stats: 5-4 3.59 ERA 50 Ks

Jesse is entering his 6th season as a Twins relief pitcher and has been one of their most consistent relievers over that entire span. He sports a career 3.26 ERA in 249 appearances and a 25-16 record. With Neshek still on the shelf due to his injury, Crain will be the primary setup man.

            Setup Man - Craig Breslow
            2008 Stats: 0-2 1.91 ERA 39 Ks

Finally someone gave this guy a chance to stick. Breslow bounced around from San Diego, to Boston, to Cleveland before finally settling in Minnesota last year and man did he ever exceed expectations. It's curious as to why he never really stuck anywhere as he was fairly effective in spite of his control issues. In any case, he ironed out the control problems for the most part in 2008 and was able to be a force out of the Twins bullpen, at one point going the entire month of June without giving up a single run. He is expected to be the #2 setup man.

            Closer - Joe Nathan
            2008 Stats: 1-2 1.33 ERA 74 Ks 39 Saves

This guy, is easily one of the, if not the most consistent closer in all of baseball. Over the last 3 years he has converted 112 out of 124 save opportunities, with just 4 of the blown opportunities resulting in a Twins loss. He has appeared in 200 games since 2006 with an ERA of 1.60 and 246 strikeouts in 207 IP and just 135 hits allowed. If the Twins have the lead in the 9th you can pretty much call it a wrap once this guy takes the mound.

Re: Lan's Minnesota Twins (The Show 09)

Baker Spins a Gem in 3-1 Opening Day Victory

Minneapolis (AP) - They say pitchers tend to have the upper hand in spring training and early on in the season. Well Scott Baker and company certainly did not do anything to dispel that notion today as Baker, Crain, and Nathan combined to allow just 1 run on 4 hits in a 3-1 victory over King Felix and the Seattle Mariners. Baker pitched 7 strong innings allowing just a solo home run to Griffey, in addition a double by Betancourt and a Johjima single. He did not walk a single batter, and threw a total of 94 pitches. Jesse Crain pitched a flawless 8th, and Joe Nathan settled in in the 9th after giving up a leadoff single to Ichiro. He would strike out Betancourt on a filthy slider, Beltre on a fastball, and got Branyan to ground out weakly to 2nd to record his first save of the season.

Offensively, the Twins got to Hernandez early and often, but weren't able to generate much in the runs department. Felix was chased after facing just 1 batter in the 6th inning having thrown 92 pitches. He gave up 7 hits and a walk over 5, but also Kd 7 and allowed only two runs to score. Washburn would give up the Twins 3rd run in the 7th inning. The Twins top of the order 1-3 all had 2 hits a piece, while Morneau reached based 3 times with two walks and an RBI double.

Game two of this opening four game set will feature a pair of southpaws in Francisco Liriano and Erik Bedard.

8th Inning Implosion by Ayala Gives M's 7-4 Win

Branyan Robs Morneau of extra bases in the 9th.

Minneapolis (AP) - It wasn't the best of starts for either starting pitcher today as both were chased after just 5 innings of work, each allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, and 3 walks. The only difference between Bedard and Liriano was that Liriano K'd 6 while Bedard managed 4, otherwise the two were mirror images of each other in their poor season debuts. The game would obviously have to be decided by the bullpens, and it was Seattle's pen that got the job done in this one.

David Aardsma, Tyler Walker, and Mark Lowe combined to pitch 4 scoreless innings of relief allowing just 2 hits (both allowed by Lowe in the 9th inning) and 2 walks (both by Walker in the 8th). The Twins had two opportunities late, but weren't able to push across any further runs. Casilla flew out to the warning track following back-to-back two out walks in the 8th, and Justin Morneau was robbed of extra bases by a spectacular diving play down the 1st base line by Russell Branyan with two on and two out in the 9th ending the ballgame.

The Twins got a strong bullpen performance out of Boof Bonser who relieved Liriano in the 6th and pitched 2 hitless innings, and struck out the side in the 7th. He would K 4 total. It was Luis Ayala who blew the game for the Twins today, and he's lucky to have come out of it with just 1 earned run credited to his name. He gave up back to back singles to Griffey and Lopez before Joe Crede threw away a sacrifice bunt attempt by Gutierrez allowing the run to score from 2nd and setup 1st and 3rd with nobody out. Ayala would allow another hit before being pulled without recording an out.

Twins Walk-Off With Come From Behind 6-5 Victory

Minneapolis (AP) - It certainly wasn't pretty, but a win's a win. In this case, it just seemed like both starting pitchers flat ran out of the gas in the later innings as the Mariners jumped on Slowey in the 6th putting up a 4 spot on a solo home run by Adrian Beltre, followed by a 3 run homer later in the inning by Franklyn Gutierrez. Slowey was otherwise relatively strong scattering 6 hits over the first 5 innings, but was never really in a serious bind until that 4th inning.

Morrow followed suit for the Mariners an inning later in the bottom of the 7th. After allowing just 1 hit through the first 6 innings Morrow hit a brick wall. After recording the first out of the inning on a Crede line out, he would give up back to back singles to Kubel and Casilla before forcing Gomez to line out hard to second. Punto would then single loading up the bases with 2 outs followed by an RBI single by Denard Span. Wakamatsu then made a curious move turning the ball over to Jarrod Washburn, a lefty to face Delmon Young who hits 19 points higher against lefties for his career. Young made him pay with a 2 RBI single into center to cut the lead down to 2. A Joe Mauer single on the next AB would bring it to within 1. Washburn finally managed to get out of the inning just narrowly missing giving up a go ahead 3 run homer to Morneau as he just got under it and Ichiro would reel it in on the track.

The Twins would tie it up in the 8th on back to back hits by Crede and Cuddyer off Jarrod Washburn who for whatever reason was allowed to remain in the game. Casilla sacrificed Cuddyer up to 2nd, but Gomez and Punto were unable to bring him in as Gomez rolled one over to 3rd and Punto flied out to right. .Jesse Crain would pitch a clean top of the 9th giving the Twins an opportunity to walk-off with the win in the bottom of the inning. They would lead off the inning with back to back hits off Roy Corcoran, with Span going from 1st to 3rd on Young's single. Joe Mauer then got into a battle with Corcoran working the count to 2-2 and following off several pitches before lifting the 9th pitch to deep center field scoring Span and giving the Twins the victory.

Deja Vu? Twins Walk-Off Again, 6-5

Minneapolis (AP) - If this set of circumstances seems similar to you, then there's a good explanation for that. It was indeed quite a similar game as both starters once again pretty much matched each other's performance only this time it took an extra inning before the bullpen (and the Twins defense) decided to blow things. Perkins pitched 6.2 solid innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits walking one and striking out 5, while Rowland-Smith went 6 giving up 8 hits, 1 walk, 3 runs, and 6 strikeouts. It was once again Jarrod Washburn that was on the mound when the lead was blown and the Twins tied things up at 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th.

Fast forward to the top of the 10th for our next scoring situation. This time we saw the Mariners take advantage of an extended inning. After recording the first two outs relatively quickly, Guerrier walked Jose Lopez. Then Gutierrez would reach first on a throwing error by Crede on what was a routine groundball. This gave the M's an extra out and Chris Shelton took full advantage lacing a triple off the right center field wall scoring both runs and giving the Mariners a 5-3 lead.

That, however, would not be the end of this one as Mark Lowe was unable to record the save for the M's. He got the first out on a ground out by Joe Mauer, but then proceeded to give up a single to Morneau, a walk to Crede, and a single to Cuddyer to load the bases. Then Gardenhire elected to pinch hit for Carlos Gomez due to his completely ineptitude with the bat and called on Jason Kubel who had the first nine innings off due to the lefty Smith starting. Kubel laced a single to center scoring both Morneau and Crede tying the game at 5. Lowe would be replaced by David Aardsma who walked Alexi Casilla on 4 pitches re-loading the bases for Nick Punto. Punto would fly out to relatively shallow center field and Gutierrez did a good job of running into the throw, but it was offline up the first base line allowing Cuddyer to score the game winning run.

7 Run 6th Propels White Sox to 10-2 Win

Chicago (AP) - Well, we saw one of the biggest innings we'll see all year in this one. We mentioned something about Morrow hitting a brick wall against the Twins back in the Mariners series. I guess you could say that would be what happened to Blackburn in this one. Except, not only did he hit a brick wall, but he also caused the entire building to come crumbling down on top of him.

The Twins actually would score first in this one on a 2 run homer by Jason Kubel, his first of the year in the second inning. That would pretty much be it for the Twins as they would harmlessly scatter 5 hits over the next 7 innings. Blackburn looked to be sailing along smoothly until the 5th when he allowed the White Sox to tie it up on back to back doubles by Thome and Pierzynski.

Now, that wasn't so bad as it only tied the game fairly early in it. It was the 6th inning where all hell broke loose as Blackburn and Ayala would combine to give up 7 runs. Dye led the inning off with a solo homer on the first pitch of the inning. Then Blackburn would load up the bases on a single, a fielder's choice, a double and an intentional walk trying to setup a double play ball. That bit the Twins in the *** as Fields doubled in two, and was the last batter that Blackburn would face. The Twins turned to Luis Ayala who beaned Getz with an 0-2 slider, struckout Jerry Owens on an 0-2 changeup, and then promptly gave up a grand slam to Alexei Ramirez to make it 9-2. And since that wasn't enough he would give up a 2 out homer to Thome the next inning to push it to 10-2, which would ultimately be the final.

Contreras pitched well for the south siders giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 5 over 6 innings. He also only struck out one. Thornton, Russell, and Dotel combined to pitch 3 innings of 2 hit relief. The Twins offense had a propensity to shoot themselves in the foot as they grounded into multiple double plays throughout the evening.
