Six Run Fifth Propels Twins to 8-4 Victory

Minneapolis (AP) - Sometimes all it takes is one bad inning to make or break a ballgame. John Lackey got a harsh reminder of that reality today courtesy of the Twins. Lackey cruised through the first 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk before things turned ugly, and fast, as he would allow a total of 7 hits and 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th.

It was the bottom of the order that actually got to Lackey first in the fifth with Casilla and Punto both singling to center and right respectively. Gomez would drive in Casilla from 2nd and setup 1st and 2nd with no one out. Then, what was intended to be a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position by Span turned into an infield single loading the bases up with nobody out for the newly acquired Nomar Garciaparra. Nomar simply knows how to get the job done in those situations as he is a career .328 hitter with RISP and .359 with the bases loaded. He would indeed deliver to start the Twins explosion driving in two and setting up first and third with still nobody out.

Mauer would make it 4-1 with a sacrifice fly to left field. Morneau, who struggled all game, struck out looking to make it two outs and pulled the Halos closer to getting out of the inning with the game still somewhat within reach. It wasn't to be however, as Juan Rivera made a terrible decision on a sinking liner off the bat of Delmon Young, electing to go for a diving catch instead of playing it off the hop and holding him to a single. Instead, the ball would get by to the wall scoring Nomar, and advancing Young to second with a double making it 5-1. Kubel would drive in Young from second on a shot back up the middle, finally chasing Lackey from the game. Casilla would record his second hit of the inning off reliever Moseley on a blooper, but Moseley would force Punto to line out preventing any further damage.

The Angels would not lay down as they scored three runs in the top of the 6th to pull it back to within two at 6-4. Liriano was only able to record one out in the inning before deferring to Matt Guerrier. Guerrero led the inning off with a double, and was driven in by Mike Napoli. Rivera lined out to left, and was Liriano's lone out. After giving up a single to Abreu and a walk to Hunter, he was lifted. Quinlan jumped on Guerrier's first pitch lining one into center and knocking in two of Liriano's runners and putting guys on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Aybar would ground out slowly to first and Morneau's only play was to the bag to make it 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Guerrier made a great pitch to Figgins forcing him to squib one back to the mound. It was not an easy play by any means to get the speedy Figgins, but the throw was in time to get him to get out of trouble.

Guerrier would stay in the game until 1 out in the 8th before the ball was turned over to Breslow who required the final two outs of the 8th as the Twins middle relief chipped in with 2.2 scoreless innings. The Twins would get two insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th on a surprising two run homer from Carlos Gomez (who went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored for a change). Joe Nathan would close things out, despite it not being a save situation as he has only appeared in two games thus far this season and needed some work out of the pen.

Hunter, Halos Get Payback in 9-1 Win

Minneapolis (AP) - A lot of players thoroughly enjoy beating up on their old teams throughout major league baseball team. Torii Hunter is one of those players. Hunter went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a home run, scoring three times, and helping to lead the Angels over the Twins 9-1. Guerrero once again tore up the Twins pitching driving in 3, while Kendrick chipped in with two in front of him. Four other Halos had an RBI each.

The game really hadn't gotten out of hand until the 7th and 8th innings as Slowey was rather effective through the first 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, but nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately for the Twins it looked like the wrong decision to send him back out for the 7th inning as he would eventually allow 3 more runs on 4 hits and a walk putting the Twins in a huge 6-1 hole. Mike Timlin would not help the cause either as he would allow 3 more runs to score in a total of 1 inning pitched. Both pitchers got themselves in serious trouble with two outs in their respective innings.

The Twins lone run came on back to back doubles in the second inning by Delmon Young and backup catcher Mike Redmond.

The Twins fell to 7-6 with the loss, while the Angels improved to 9-3. The series will conclude tomorrow with Glen Perkins (0-0 3.55 ERA) facing Ervin Santana (1-1 1.38 ERA).

Santana Too Hot to Handle as Twins Fall 4-0

Minneapolis (AP) - Ervin Santana really came into his own in 2008 after struggling in '07 going 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA and 214 strikeouts. He has started this season with a 0.93 ERA in 3 starts trying to prove that '08 was no fluke. Well, I'm certainly a believer anyway. Santana went six strong innings scattering just 3 singles, two of which were of the infield variety, walking none, and striking out 10 Twins batters. The Angels manager made a strange decision in lifting him in the 7th with 1 out and two on, but it turned out to be the right move to go to Speier as he induced a line drive double play from Michael Cuddyer to end the only semblance of a jam the Angels pitching staff got into.

Glen Perkins was the tough luck loser in this one, going 8 strong innings allowing just 3 runs on 6 hits striking out 4 and throwing 106 pitches. The Twins left him in to start the 9th as they had the lefty-lefty matchup, but Abreu would single off him regardless. Abreu played a key role in this one as a matter of fact as he had a bases clearing double back in the 3rd inning of the game scoring Aybar and Figgins to give the Angels the only two runs they would need. They of course would add two more in the 9th on a two run homer by Vlad Guerrero to make it the 4-0 final.

The Twins will have their first off-day of the season tomorrow before heading to Boston for a two game series.

              Blackburned! Twins Roll 6-1

Boston (AP) - Remember that whole Torii Hunter beating up on his old team that we mentioned a couple games ago? Well, former Sox superstar Nomar Garciaparra has more than a bone to pick with his former team and he made that point well known early in this one. Nomar homered the first pitch he saw from former Dodgers teammate Brad Penny over the monster out on to Landsdowne to put the Twins up 1-0 early. He also chipped in a second RBI in the 3rd inning giving the Twins a 3-0 lead at the time on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Twins got to Penny for 1 run in each of the first 3 innings. We already mentioned two of them, and the third one came in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by Casilla which just wrapped around Pesky's pole in right. The Red Sox' lone run off Twins starter Nick Blackburn came in the 4th inning on back-to-back-to-back singles by Lowell, Drew, and Baldelli with one out in the inning. That pretty much covered the extent of Blackburn's troubles as he scattered just 4 other hits over 7 innings.

The Twins would get two insurance runs later in the 6th inning. Mauer would reach first on what should have been ruled an infield single, but was called an error. Pedroia made a diving stop back up the middle but then threw it away on the throw to first. Mauer did not advance, and he likely would have been safe anyway so it really should have been a single. In any case, that would be the last batter faced by Brad Penny in the contest. Hideki Okajima was called on in relief, and that turned out to be the wrong decision. Morneau promptly doubled to center putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Delmon Young lined one hard down the left field line, continuing his hot hitting with runners in scoring position, driving in both Mauer and Morneau for his 11th and 12th RBI of the season. Casilla would ground into a double play, and Punto would line out to end the inning.

A 1 out double by Delmon Young in the top of the 8th would lead to the Twins 6th and final run. Casilla singled to left scoring Young. The Twins bullpen sat down all 6 batters they faced as Timlin bounced back from his awful previous appearance, and Guerrier continued his effectiveness out of the pen.

The win puts the Twins back above .500 at 8-7, while the Sox fell to 7-7 with the loss. The final game of this series features a matchup between Tim Wakefield (0-1 6.43 ERA) and Scott Baker (1-1 5.82 ERA)

Twins Win a Crazy One, 12-8

Boston (AP) - Fans of the Boston Red Sox know how quickly a game pitched by Wakefield can turn from good to bad to awful. If they didn't, there was a harsh reminder of that today. The Twins were able to get just 3 hits through the first four innings of the ballgame today before exploding in the 5th for a total of 9 runs. John Smoltz did not help much in relief either as two of those runs were his, and he would allow 3 more in the sixth inning to make the score 12-3 after 6 innings.

At that point the Twins felt like Baker had gone long enough to turn it over to Bonser for a couple innings to give the bullpen a night off. Wrong. It turns out the Twins really needed those 9 runs as Bonser went ahead and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in 1 inning of "relief". He got credit for one of the ugliest holds in baseball history probably. Breslow would pitch an uneventful eighth giving up 1 hit and striking out 1, while Joe Nathan struck out the side in the 9th to give the Twins the victory.

Nomar Garciaparra once again gave his old team a big fat kiss my *** as he went 4 for 5 scoring two runs, and driving in 3 to raise his season average to .292. He has 5 RBI in his last 2 games and 12 total on the season. Baker pitched well turning in a quality start, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits over 6, striking out 4. Every player that played in the game had at least one hit except for Delmon Young.

The Twins have a day off tomorrow before heading off to Cleveland for a 3 game set. They will miss their ace Cliff Lee, but will face Fausto Carmona, Anthony Reyes, and Aaron Laffey. The Indians are 12-4 and have a 3 game lead over the Twins in the Central.

The Twins also learned after the game that they lost utility infielder Brendan Harris for 1-2 months with a broken hand he sustained sliding into home during today's game. Brian Buscher was called up from AAA Rochester to take his spot. Buscher will handle corner infield backup duties, while Matt Tolbert will handle middle infield.

I don't even know with the pictures. I just uploaded them photobucket and posted the links like I would for any other one.

Boxscores you have to do in notepad and just copy and paste in code tags.

Stupid Glitch Ruins Classic Game, Indians Win 6-5

Cleveland (AP) - Is there anything more frustrating in a video game than a glitch costing you a ballgame? The Minnesota Twins had a comeback effort and exciting extra innings affair ruined by a glitch in the game in this one. The Twins fought back from down 5-3 heading into the 8th, scoring a run off Joe Smith in the 8th to make it 5-4, and forcing Kerry Wood out of the game in the 9th after back to back walks. They would tie it up at 5-5 on an RBI single by Delmon Young off Rafael Betancourt.

2 1/2 scoreless innings of extra ball went by with no scoring until the bottom of the 12th. Ben Francisco pulled one sharply down the third base line. Michael Cuddyer (who shifted over to 3rd base when the Twins elected to leave Gomez in the game after pinch running for Nomar) made a nice backhand grab and fired one over to Morneau at first. The throw was wild high and looked to go into the stands for what should have just been an error that allowed Francisco to advance to second. This wasn't the case according to the game though. The ball went through the stands into what looked to be eternal blackness and was irretrievable. This allowed Ben Francisco to circle the bases and score the game winning run ruining an extra innings classic.

I had a glitch lose me a game last night.

Pujols hugged first for some reason on a groundball that went by him and scored the GW run. I guess you had to see it and yes it sucks.

Happens a lot less this year than it did last year in 08 though.

Slowey-in Them Down, Twins Win 7-5

Cleveland (AP) - Kevin Slowey has struggled quite a bit early on this season. Not with his command or anything, but really just with his inability to miss his opponent's bats. Well, today wasn't a whole lot different. He did give up 9 hits, but this time it was scattered over 8 strong innings of work, allowing just 2 runs, striking out 4, walking one and picking up the quality start and the win. Justin Morneau carried the Twins offense driving in four, and reaching base a total of 5 times.

The Twins jumped on Anthony Reyes early and often forcing him out of the ballgame after only 4 innings of work. He gave up 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and hit a man. Justin Morneau drove in the first two runs of the game on an RBI double off the right field wall just missing a home run. Reyes would settle down and retire Young on a groundout to short and struck out Kubel on a 3-2 changeup out of the strike zone. The Twins only other run off Reyes would come in the next inning on an RBI double by Denard Span scoring Carlos Gomez and giving the Twins a 3-0 lead.

The Indians would make a game out of it as they scored a run in the 3rd on an RBI groundout to short by Mark DeRosa, and a run in the 5th on a 2 out single by Victor Martinez to make it 3-2. Justin Morneau would see to it that the game wouldn' t stay like that however as he laced a 2 run homer into the right center field bleachers off of Indians reliever Rafael Perez to make it 5-2. Joe Smith wouldn't fare much better out of the pen giving up a solo home run to Brian Buscher, which also happened to be his first hit of the season, in the 8th. Nomar led off the 9th taking a first pitch fastball into the left field stands to make it 7-2.

The Twins turned to Boof Bonser with a 5 run lead as everyone else in then pen except for Nathan pitched yesterday. That turned out to be a bad decision, as Bonser continues to be incapable of getting anyone out. In fact, this might have been the last game that we will see Bonser in a Twins uniform. Bonser would allow 3 runs without recording an out turning the game into a save situation for Joe Nathan who sat down all three batters he faced recording just his second save of the season.

The Twins improve to 10-8 with the win while the Indians fall to 13-5. The rubber match will feature Glen Perkins (0-1 3.48 ERA) and Aaron Laffey (2-1 5.51 ERA).

Following the game the Twins waived Boof Bonser and designated him for assignment to AAA. He will have to clear waivers in order to go down. Phillip Humber was called up.
