Twins Take Rubber Match in Extras, 7-6

Cleveland (AP) - In a game that was just as exciting as the opener to this series, the Twins took a 7-6 victory over division rival Cleveland Indians. Once again it was Kerry Wood's inability to get an out that bit the Indians in the *** and forced extra innings.

The Twins would score first in this one as Michael Cuddyer singled in Delmon Young who led off the second inning with a double before Aaron Laffey would induce three straight fly balls to center to end the inning with the Twins ahead 1-0. The Indians would answer right back and in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Hafner and Choo doubled back to back to tie it at 1-1. Then Kelly Shoppach hit a two run homer to put the Indians up 3-1. Minnesota would get back to within 1 in the top of the 3rd on a sacrifice fly by Justin Morneau.

The Indians would add single runs in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single by David Dellucci and in the 6th on an RBI sacrifice fly also by Dellucci to give the Indians a 5-2 lead heading into the top of the 8th. The Twins would have a golden opportunity to tie things up or even take a lead but they would not capitalize. Joe Mauer led the inning off with a single followed by a Morneau walk. Young would fly out to center, advancing Mauer to 3rd where he would be driven in by Cuddyer on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. Kobayashi would then walk Casilla and Kubel to load the bases up with 2 outs for Nick Punto. The Twins elected not to pinch hit for Punto as their options were Tolbert, Buscher, and Redmond, and the Indians had called upon Rafael Perez to get out of the jam. Buscher would have been the option had they stuck with Kobayashi, but neither of the bench players hit lefties particularly well. Punto wound up flying out to center to end the rally.

The Indians would add what, at the time, would be a critical insurance run on an RBI double by David Delluci scoring Choo who singled earlier in the inning to make it 6-3 off Mike Timlin. The Twins would not go quietly, however, as they jumped all over Kerry Wood. Span and Nomar each singled to put two on with nobody out. Then Joe Mauer came through with his biggest hit of the season launching a 3 run homer into the right field bullpen tying the ballgame up at 6-6. Rafael Betancourt would come in and sit down the next 3 batters, but obviously the damage was already done.

Extras for the most part was uneventful as both teams relievers were in control for the first two innings. Jonathan Meloan wound up being the loser as Delmon Young led off the top of the 12th with a double off the left field wall, his second of the game. Cuddyer would ground out to 2nd advancing Young to 3rd. Young would score on what was ruled an infield hit for Alexi Casilla. Casilla pretty much hit a swinging bunt that went just past the reach of the pitcher and had to be fielded by the second baseman who had no play at either Young or Casilla as Young came across to score giving the Twins the 7-6 lead. Joe Nathan would slam the door shut in the bottom of the inning picking up his 3rd save of the season.

The Twins improved to 11-8 with the win and the Indians dropped to 13-6. Minnesota will finish off April with a 3 game homestand against the 12-7 Rays. Blackburn (1-2 5.19 ERA) will face off against Sonnanstine (2-0 2.66 ERA) in the opener.

Unlikely Hero Gives Twins Walkoff Win

Minneapolis (AP) - Matt Tolbert is an unassuming fellow. In fact, chances are if you aren't a Minnesota Twins fan then you probably have never heard of him. Actually, there's plenty of Minnesota fans that would give you the old head shake and the "who?". The 16th round pick of the Twins back in 2004 was just 1 for 10 on the season coming into tonight's game and has appeared in just 41 games in the big leagues. Gardenhire even contemplated pinch hitting for him in the 9th with Cuddyer on second and 2 outs in the inning. Instead he showed faith in the youngster and it paid dividends as he would lace a single into the left center field gap scoring Cuddyer and giving the Twins a 4-3 walk-off victory.

Ironically enough, it was a Tolbert error back in the first inning that led to a 2 run first inning to begin with, so in a sense the walk-off RBI was redemption. The Rays scored two runs in the first on an RBI double by Pena, scoring Iwamura who reached on the error. Upton would fly out to center scoring Evan Longoria who advanced to 3rd on the Pena double to make it 2-0. The Twins would tie it up in the 4th on an RBI double by Michael Cuddyer, followed by an RBI single by Nick Punto to make it 2-2.

The Twins would take the lead in the bottom of the 5th with a good display of fundamental small ball. Gomez lined to center to lead off the inning and then stole second base. Nomar would do his job and advance the runner to 3rd rolling a pitch over to Iwamura at second to get Gomez to 3rd with 1 out. Joe Mauer drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-2. The lead would last all of 2 batters in the top of the 6th as Carlos Pena would hit a solo homer to straightaway center that snuck just over the glove of Gomez scaling the wall making it 3-3.

Tolbert's RBI in the 9th as mentioned previously gave the Twins the 4-3 victory.

Joe Mauer left the game late with an undisclosed injury. We will report more when we know it.

            Twins Suffer Devastating Injury

Minneapolis (AP) - Minnesota Twins all-star catcher Joe Mauer has been placed on the 60-Day DL today with a fractured wrist sustained in yesterday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mauer left the game after sliding hard into second base trying to break-up a double play ball. X-ray performed in the clubhouse revealed the fracture. He is expected to miss 2 to 3 months and likely will not return until sometime after the All-Star Break.

He was hitting .280 with 1 HR and 12 RBI on the season.

Veteran backup Mike Redmond will have to take over the everyday catching duties in the interim. The Twins have called up Wilson Ramos to take over backup duties.

Ouch.. losing Mauer is going to be tough, even if he wasn't putting up great numbers so far.

Twins Can't Overcome Rocky First Inning, Fall 7-2

Minneapolis (AP) - Scott Baker has been frustratingly inconsistent so far this season. He has turned in 3 quality starts out of his 5 starts, but his other two starts have been so god awful that they have inflated his season ERA to 6.00 despite the other 3 good starts. Today, he gave up 5 runs in the first inning, and 1 in the second before settling down to pitch 5 shutout innings while giving up a total of 2 more hits the rest of the game. Unfortunately, a 6-0 deficit is pretty tough to rally from behind against, especially against the likes of Matt Garza.

(Sorry for the short article. This was played last night, and there's not much to talk about).

Twins Close Out April With 5-2 Win

Minneapolis (AP) - The Twins bounced back from their disappointing loss yesterday with a 5-2 win to take the rubber game of this three game series and end April on a high note, after hitting a low with the news of Joe Mauer's injury. Mike Redmond did his best Joe Mauer impression today, however. Redmond's only hit of the game was a 2 run homer on an ugly hanging slide piece from Scott Kazmir.

Scott Kazmir did not have his best stuff today. In fact, he didn't have any stuff today. He lasted just 4 innings giving up 5 runs on 9 hits, striking out 3 and walking 1. The Rays bullpen was much more effective than their starter as Howell and Isringhausen combined to pitch 4 scoreless innings allowing just 2 more hits and 3 walks, while not striking anyone out. Francisco Liriano improved to 3-0 on the season for the Twins pitching 7 innings and giving up just 1 run on an RBI single by Willy Aybar in the 7th inning.

Every Twin in the lineup reached base at least once in what was a well-balanced attack on Kazmir. Nick Punto was the lone player without a hit, but was issued a walk. Nomar Garciaparra went 3 for 4, scoring once and driving in 1, while Justin Morneau added 2 more RBI to his team leading total bringing him up to 17 on the season.

The Twins end the month of April tomorrow with an off-day and are currently tied with the Cleveland Indians for first in the AL central with a 13-9 record.

                        Slowey Tosses CG Shutout

Minneapolis (AP) - Kevin Slowey was sharp in his last start throwing 8 innings and allowing just 2 runs despite scattering nine hits. What would he do for an encore? How about a complete game shutout? Slowey rolled through the Royals lineup scattering 6 hits over 9 innings, striking out 3 and improving to 2-1 on the season. The Twins needed the strong pitching performance as they managed just 3 runs on 6 hits, all off Royals starter Bannister who only lasted 5 giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Ron Mahay turned in 3 innings of hitless relief.

The Twins runs all came in the 5th inning. Denard Span hit a sinking liner to center which Coco Crisp dove and missed at. Span would come all the way around and score an inside the park home run, driving in Nick Punto as well to make it 2-0. Then Nomar Garciaparra hit a real home run off Bannister on a first pitch fastball, his 3rd of the year. Bannister would settle down and get the next two batters to ground out to second ending the inning. The Royals manager had a bit of a quick hook as he did not send Bannister out for the 6th, despite a pitch count in the 70s, and the fact that he settled down after the two homers.

The Twins moved to 14-9 with the victory. Glen Perkins (0-1 4.39 ERA) will matchup against Luke Hochevar (1-1 3.97 ERA) in the second game of the series.

No Mas! Nomar! Twins Walk Off Again

Minneapolis (AP) - Walk-Off wins are pretty much the most exciting a baseball game can get in the regular season. Well, the Twins love the excitement so much that they went ahead and got another one. I'm pretty sure this is like the 3rd or 4th time already on the young season. And once again it was a come from behind victory. However, this time it wasn't spurred by an explosion of hits. It was the Twins ability to get on base and wait out the bad relief pitching of the Royals.

The Royals got on the board first in this one on a 2 out RBI single by Mark Teahen. The Royals ran themselves out of the inning in that case though as Crisp tried to advance 1st to 3rd on the hit to center and was gunned down at 3rd base for the final out of the inning, instead of having two on with two out. The Twins answered back quickly in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Nomar Garciaparra off a hanging deuce from Hochevar to make it 1-1.

The next 3 innings would be quiet as both pitchers settled in for the early innings. Glen Perkins, however, would quickly become very unsettled as the Royals touched him up for a 4 run 5th on 6 hits in the inning, including two doubles and two triples. DeJesus, Crisp, Gordon, and Teahen all had extra base hits and all drove in one run each before Perkins finally managed to get out of the inning trailing 5-1. The Twins got two back in the bottom of the inning on 3 straight hits, singles by Redmond and Punto, and an RBI double by Span to make it 5-2. Nomar drove in Punto from 3rd with a sacrifice fly. Hochevar narrowly escaped a huge inning after hitting Cuddyer to put 2 on with 2 out for Morneau. However, he got out of it by forcing a Morneau pop-up to end the inning ahead 5-3.

Philip Humber threw two scoreless innings of relief in the 6th and 7th to give the Twins a chance to back into this one. And that is exactly what they did against Royals reliever Robinson Tejeda. Tejeda walked Punto, who was sacrificed over to second by Denard Span. He then issued another walk, this time to Nomar putting 2 on with 1 out. Michael Cuddyer drove in Punto from second with an RBI single to left. Nomar advanced to 3rd as the throw went to the plate. The Royals then gave the ball to Juan Cruz, but at this point it was too late for him to bail out Tejeda. He would induce a fly ball from Morneau, but it was deep enough to score Nomar from 3rd tying the ballgame up at 5-5.

Both the Twins and the Royals had opportunities to break the tie in the bottom of the 8th and top of the 9th respectively. The Twins got two on with 1 out in the 8th, before Punto grounded into a double play to end the inning. The Royals would load the bases up on Matt Guerrier, however, he would bail himself out forcing Crisp to pop up and inducing a ground out to 3rd by Aviles to end the inning.

The Twins would not be denied in the bottom of the 9th. Doug Waechter threw just five pitches in relief. Problem for him was, 4 of them were balls to Denard Span, walking him on 4 pitches. Then, trying to get ahead in the count, he grooved a first pitch fastball to Nomar who jumped all the opportunity lacing a double into the left centerfield gap. Span would score easily from 1st giving the Twins the 6-5 victory. Nomar's 3 RBI performance tied him for the team lead with 18 RBI on the season with Justin Morneau.

The final game of this series features Nick Blackburn (1-2 4.44 ERA) and Kyle Davies (0-1 6.75 ERA). The Twins will then head off for a two game series against the Tigers, followed by a two game set against the O's.

Thanks. Trying to stay patient with this team. Not really a whole lot of guys that would draw that many walks so I guess it's alright if I don't either, haha.
