Re: Madden 2004: Restoring the Roar

            Arizona 0 14 10 7-31

            Detroit 0 20 0 7-27

            First Quarter
The first quarter was simple and scoreless.

            Second Quarter
Jason Hanson scored from 45 yards out 1:11 into the quarter, but former Lion Scotty Anderson torched the special teams for a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Two minutes later Joey Harrington hit Az Hakim for a 25 yard touchdown, only to see Jeff Blake strike Kevin Kasper for a 46 yard touchdown. The seesaw battle continued when James Stewart scored one play later on an 82 yard run. Hanson connected from 46 yards out with nine seconds remaining.

            Third Quarter
Bill Gramatica hit a 22 yard field goal with 1:51 to go, and on Detroit's first play Joey HArrington appeared to have his arm going forward, but he was drilled and the ball went crazy, shooting backwards. The Cardinals recovered at the Lions' nine, and Blake hit Bryan Gilmore for a touchdown on the first play. 24-20 Cards after three.

            Fourth Quarter
Joey Harrington led the Lions' comeback, hitting a wide open Mikhael Ricks in the endzone with only 48 seconds to play to give the Lions a 27-24 lead. But the Lions' horrid secondary showed their futility once more, as Blake hit Kasper for a 48 yard touchdown with 16 seconds left. Harrington has hit as he threw on the first play, leaving 8 seconds left. He hit Rogers for a 43 yard gain to the Cardinals' 35, but his last second shot to Rogers was tipped away and the Cardinals survived.

            Grades

            Quarterbacks: B+
Harrington went 19/32 with 244 yards and 2 touchdowns, but made some costly throws that should've been intercepted.

            Running Backs: A-
James Stewart had an 82 yard touchdown but only had 69 yards the rest of the game.

            Wide Receivers: A-
Tight End Mikhael Ricks led the Lions with six catches for 57 yards and a score. Rookie Charles Rogers had 126 yards on 5 catches. Bill Schroeder dropped 4 of the 5 balls thrown at him.

            O-Line: C-
Rather dreadful. Harrington was sacked 3 times and pressured several other times. This will have to improve. Stockar McDougle did have 16 pancakes.

            D-Line: B+
While they did hold Emmitt Smith to 24 yards on 17 carries, a line of Robert Porcher, Luther Elliss, Shaun Rogers and Kalimba Edwards should've had at once one sack.

            Linebackers: A-
They combined for 15 tackles, 8 of which by rookie Boss Bailey, but MLB Earl Holmes had only one.

            Defensive Backs: E
294 yards. 3 touchdowns. No interceptions. Even with Deion Sanders recently signed, this unit is the worst in football. The Lions may need to seek a trade or investigate the FA market better.

            Special Teams: D+
Jason Hanson was good, 2-2 on FGs, but they allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown. Worse, Az Hakim had no blocking all day long.

            OVERALL GRADE: C-
The Lions may be in for a long day next week at Green Bay...

            Comments from the Coach
"Our defensive backs need a lot of help. I thought veteran Deion Sanders could help out, but there's the whole thing of a guy named Sanders wearing #20 here in Detroit. Joey looked good, but our defense can't let a team like Arizona score 31 points on us, or we'll never compete."

Desperate to improve their secondary, the Lions have traded backup QB Mike McMahon, not-used DT Dan Wilkinson and their first round pick to the Houston Texans for 94 rated Cornerback Aaron Glenn.

"I think Aaron is exactly the kind of player that we need. We might actually have a chance in Green Bay now," Coach Mariucci joked at the press conference welcoming Glenn to Detroit.

                              Detroit (0-1) @ Green Bay (1-0)

                              First Quarter
After the Lions opened with a three and out, Ryan Longwell kicked a 33 yard FG for the Packers, but on the Lions' first play from scrimmage, the corners blitzed, and Az Hakim high-stepped 77 yards to the house. The Packers narrowed the gap to 7-6 on a 51 yard Longwell FG.
                              Score after one: Lions 7-6

                              Second Quarter

Jason Hanson atoned for an earlier miss with a 47 yarder 4 minutes into the second. After a Packer first down, newest Lion Aaron Glenn immediately proved he was worth the price of two players and a draft pick, stepping in front of Brett Favre's pass and dancing 47 yards to a 17-6 lead. Favre led the Packers down the field, only to be intercepted by Boss Bailey at the Lions' 24. Bailey returned it 56 yards before Donald Driver caught him at the Packers' 21. Several plays later Joey Harrington snuck in with 16 seconds left for a 24-6 lead.
                              Score at halftime: Lions 24-6

                              Third Quarter

On the first drive the Packers stormed down the field and Lamar Smith punched it in from a yard out to make it 24-13. The Lions seemed to be driving down field for the dagger but Joey Harrington fumbled at the goal line, giving the ball up. After a two yard Ahman Green run, Brett Favre stepped back to pass, but Boss Bailey blitzed, tossed Green aside, and crushed Favre for a safety. On the ensuing free kick, the Lions began to drive again, leading into the fourth...
                              Score after three: Lions 26-13

                              Fourth Quarter

1:02 into the final quarter the Lions all but sealed the end of their 12 game losing streak at Lambeau, when Harrington found Charles Rogers for a 1 yard touchdown and Rogers' first career NFL score. A two point conversion made it 34-13, and when the Lions got the ball back, Harrington struck Rogers repeatedly, the final being a eight yard touchdown that sent the Packer faithful to the exits in swarms. The Packers got a meaningless touchdown in the final minute.
Final Score: Lions 41, Packers 20

                              Grades

                              Quarterbacks:
                              A+

Joey was beautiful today, going 20/38 for 351 yards, 3 scores and no interceptions. He did make a few bad choices that should have been interceptions, but his performance was amazing in hostile territory.

Stewart wasn't a big part of the offense today, only getting 47 yards on 10 carries.

Charles Rogers was amazing. His first game at the venerable Lambeau Field and he storms the place with 10 catches, 163 yards and 2 fourth quarter scores to end the Lions' drought of road futility not only at Lambeau, but over the past two seasons. Az Hakim only had one catch, but it was a 77 yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Aaron Glenn!! His interception for a touchdown in the second quarter put the Lions up 17-6 and began the blowout. Still, they allowed 299 passing yards, but Glenn is the answer. He will truly be tested next week against Randy Moss.

12 years, and finally the Lions clip the Packers at Lambeau. Joey and Charles are a deadly combo. The Vikes are next, but you know the Packers are going to want to spoil the Lions' Fan Appreciation Day, like they spoiled theirs' today.
