Vrbata, Brind'Amour propell 'Canes to Victory
    - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
    (December 2, 2003)

The Hurricanes first line, compiled of Radim Vrbata, Rod Brind'Amour, and Erik Cole put on a show, and helped the 'Canes to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild at the XCEL Energy Center.

A minute and a half into the game, Radim Vrbata scored, after he shot the puck, and backhanded his own rebound in threw the five hole of Manny Fernandez. Brind'Amour and Wesley got the helpers.

In the second, Andrew Brunette scored for the Wild, to tie the game at 1 a piece. He shot a backhander towards Weekes, and a Carolina defenseman came sliding in, trying to block the shot. Instead, they helped the puck in, and Weekes had no chance. That goal ended his 2 game shutout streak. Rod Brind'Amour scored the second goal for the 'Canes with about 5 minutes to go in the period. He deflected Aaron Ward's shot from the point, and put it passed the standing-up Fernandez.

Jaroslav Svoboda put the 'Canes up 3-1 in the third period, with a goal in which he put it top shelf over Fernandez's stacked pads. Ward and Vasicek got the assists. Andrew Brunette struck again for Minnesota, to put them only down by a goal. It was a chase for the puck right in front of Weekes, and when Tanabe missed the puck, Brunette grabbed it and blasted it past Kevin Weekes.

Radim Vrabata scored his second goal of the night, an empty netter, to secure the victory. Brind'Amour had the assist, and finished the night with 3 points, 1 goal, and 2 assists. Vrabata finished with 2 goals, and 2 points.

Notes: Shots were 38-27 Carolina.....Kevin Weekes shutout streak ended at 2 games.....Carolina is in a 3-way tie for first in the SE Division

          Be patient, O'Neill Fans
          - Editorial, Raleigh News & Observer
          (December 3, 2003)

Jeff O'Neill will be returning from an injury the next game the 'Canes play, which is at Chicago. But, don't expect him to score 3 goals and have 2 assists. It will take awhile for him to get back in the swing of things, as it will and has for any injured player. O'Neill will have to get used to playing with his linemates against other teams, as he has been only playing against his own team during practices. Wait, and good things will come out of it.

Notes: Sami Kapanen is still out 2-4 months.....Jeff O'Neill will probably play on the 2nd or 3rd line

                Thibault, Blackhawks shut out 'Canes
                - AP, Raleigh News and Observer
                (December 4, 2003)

Jocelyn Thibault stood tall, making 27 saves and getting the shutout as the Blackhawks blanked the 'Canes 2-0 at the United Center.

The first period was scoreless, but both teams had many chances. Kevin Weekes and Thibault both made some great saves, taking the scoreless tie into the second period.

Eric Daze struck first from a behind the net pass. Nyalnder was behind the net, and hit Daze with a lazer pass. The puck settled on his stick and he thrusted it into the net. The Hurricanes failed to quit, pelting Thibault with many shots.

David Phelps added another tally in the third, 4:20 into the period. The Hurricanes failed to clear the puck, and Egor Korolev found Phelps open, and he threw it past Weekes, making the score 2-0 Chicago. That's the way the score ended.

Kevin Weekes made 34 saves on 36 shots, in his 27th outing of the year.

Notes: Each team failed to score on the powerplay.....Patrick DesRochers will get the start in net for the 'Canes, next game against Ottawa

O'Neill gets hat-trick as 'Canes win
                      - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
                      (December 7, 2003)

Jeff O'Neill, playing in just his second game after being injured, scored a hat-trick, and Jan Hlavac got 3 assists as the 'Canes whopped the Senators 4-2 at the RBC Center.

O'Neill fans were told to be patient. The wait is now over (quick wasn't it?). 3:23 into the first period, O'Neill scored his first of three on the night. He picked up a loose puck from in front of the net and stuck it top shelf.

In the second, it looked as if the tides had turned. Ottawa came out and scored 2 quick goals, each coming in under 30 seconds. At 6:26, Arvedson scored on the powerplay, sticking the puck past the sprawling DesRochers on the one-timer. Then, at 6:53, Chris Neil scored on an empty net. DesRochers had made a diving save and had given up the rebound; while he was getting back up, Neil picked the puck up and threw it into the net.

The 'Canes had to gather it up in the third if they wanted to win, or just to tie. They did just that. Jeff O'Neill struck again for the 'Canes, as he got a feed from Jan Hlavac, his first of the night, and scored. The Hurricanes wouldn't give up. Oleg Tverdovsky got his first goal as a 'Cane, making the score 3-2 and giving them the lead. The line made up of Hlavac, Tverdovsky, and O'Neill entered the zone, and Hlavac fed it to Tverdovsky, Tverdovsky passed it to O'Neill, and O'Neill slung it back to Tverdovsky who stuffed it into the net.

With a little over 1 minute left in the game, Lalime was pulled. O'Neill got a pass from Hlavac and stuck it into the empty net for the hat-trick. Jan Hlavac finished with a 3 assist, 3 point night. O'Neill finished with 3 goals, 1 assist, and 4 points. Patrick DesRochers made 24 saves, standing tall in the 3rd period, and preserving the win for Carolina.

Notes: Shotswere 44-26 Carolina.....Carolina gave up one goal on 3 powerplay's of Ottawa, but didn't score on their 3 powerplays
