Devils score in OT to win
    - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
    (December 8, 2003)

Patrick DesRochers gave up a goal in overtime to Jeff Friesen, as the Devils won 2-1 against the the 'Canes at the RBC Center.

Jan Hlavac got his 4th point in 2 games when he scored in the first period to put the 'Canes up 1-0. Oleg Tverdovsky skated into the zone with the puck, and found a trailing Hlavac who recieved the pass right on the tape and slapped it past Brodeur.

Martin Brodeur looked strong for the rest of the game. He stopped every shot from the start of the second period on, 29 in all.

The 'Canes lead fell apart when Turner Stevenson scored 5:20 into the third period. He came into the 'Canes zone with the puck, and wristed it past DesRochers.

The game went into overtime, and the 'Canes had the powerplay. They couldn't score on that one or any of them the whole game. Instead, the Devils tacked on a goal, giving them the win. Jeff Friesen walked in and scored on an incredible angle, ending the game.

The game was a physical one, featuring 39 hits in all; 20 from New Jersey and 19 from Carolina.

Notes: Shots were 32-30 New Jersey.....Kevin Weekes will be back as the starter the next game

'Canes win to split home-and-home series
      - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
      (December 6, 2003)

The Hurricanes went to Continental Airlines Arena after a loss at the RBC Center to the Devils, and rebounded to split the home-and-home series. The 'Canes won 2-1, with the help of Kevin Weekes, who made 27 saves.

The first period was scoreless, but was dominated by Carolina. At the end of the first period, the shots were 12 to 5 in favor of Carolina. Weekes and Brodeur looked strong the entire period, making save after save.

Scott Stevens, or actually Bret Hedican, scored late in the second to make it 1-0 Devils. On the powerplay, Jeff Friesen found Scott Stevens open up top and fired the puck right onto his tape. Stevens loaded the gun and fired, but Weekes made the save. Hedican, however, stuck out his stick and the loose puck found it's way into the net.

The Hurricanes wasted no time, however, getting that goal back. Jaroslav Svoboda notched on a Hurricanes goal less than 20 seconds later, tieing the game at 1. Marty Brodeur thought he had a teammate near him, and passed the puck along the boards. Instead, Svoboda was their to intercept it and slapped it into the empty net.

52 seconds into the third, the deadly Hurricanes penalty kill struck. Jeff O'Neill recieved a cross ice pass from Rod Brind'Amour on a shorthanded 2-on-1, and he was able to tack on another goal, making the score 2-1 'Canes, and that's the way it was the rest of the game.

Weekes finished the game strong, as well did Brodeur making some timely saves, keeping the Devils still withen reach. New Jersey was the only team to capitalize on the powerplay, as they went 1/9.

Notes: Carolina went 0/5 on the powerplay.....Shots were 30-28 in favor of Carolina.....Martin Rucinsky has been reported to be on the trade block, as he hasn't lived up to his contract

Weekes gets 7th shutout of the year in 2-0 win
            - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
            (December 12, 2003)

Kevin Weekes is a workhorse. 'Nuff said. He works his tail off game after game, and it has payed off for him as well as the team. Weekes got his 7th shutout of the year as the 'Canes won 2-0 against the Coyotes at brand-spankin' new Glendale Arena.

Sean Burke and Kevin Weekes were the highlights of the first two periods, stopping every shot that came their way. It wasn't until the third period that a goal was put onto the board. That goal was from Carolina, preventing the game from being sent into overtime and preventing the game from ending in a dreadful 0-0 tie.

Oleg Tverdovsky was the man to do it at 14:54 of the third period. Jan Hlavac began the play by breaking the zone. He thought about shooting it, but the puck was stolen. Sticks poked at it for a couple of seconds and then it landed square on Tverdovsky's stick. He skated with it and slung it past Burke, putting the 'Canes up 1-0.

Kevin Weekes was the star of the show, as mentioned already, making 29 saves on the Coyotes 29 shots.

The Coyotes had two powerplay chances, as the 'Canes were very disciplined, after giving up 9 powerplays a couple nights ago. Phoenix, however, was more disciplined, as they took no penalties, offering the 'Canes no chance to have a man-advantage.

Erik Cole scored near the end of the game on an empty net goal, securing the 2-0 Hurricanes win. The win pushes the first-place 'Canes farther ahead of Washington in the Southeast Division.

Notes: Shots were 29-27 Phoenix.....Martin Rucinsky didn't have anything to show for his performance tonight, making him an even bigger threat on the chopping block

                  - AP, Raleigh News & Observer
                  (December 10, 2003)

Today, Michael Smith, President and GM of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that Martin Rucinsky has been released. Rucinsky, when first signed, was playing on as high as the second line, but fell back to the fourth line when he couldn't convert.

"Martin wasn't living up to his contract. He wasn't playing hard every shift, he wasn't recieving passes well, I mean, I could go on forever," Smith said.

"Maybe Martin can get his game going somewhere else, but we have given him plenty of time, and it hasn't come together."

Notes: Craig Adams will most likely take Rucinsky's space on the fourth line in the game against St. Louis.....The Hurricanes play St. Louis at the Savvis Center tonight to complete their 3-game road trip

Today, Michael Smith, President and GM of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that goalie Jamie Storr has been aquired from the Kings in exchange for Patrick DesRoches and an 8th round draft pick. DesRoches played in 2 games for Carolina this season, recording a 1-1 record, and a fairly good GAA and Save%.

"Patty has given us a lot of depth in our goalie system, posting good numbers when Weeksy isn't in goal. However, I've had my eye on Storr for awhile now, and I like what I have seen," Smith says.

Jamie Storr has played in 10 games for the Kings so far this season, posting a 7-3 record, with a very impressive GAA and Save%.

"Jamie has formed incredible numbers this season, and now, with his presence, our goalie tandem should be the one to beat for the rest of the year."

"Jamie has formed incredible numbers this season, and now, with his presence, our goalie tandem should be the one to beat for the rest of the year."

Notes: Storr will wear the number 1 on his jersey.....His Hurricane debut is unknown at this point.....The Hurricanes travel to St. Louis to play the Blues in the Savvis Center tonight

Jamie Storr made his Carolina Hurricane debut at Savvis Center in St. Louis. He looked strong for the entire game, allowing only one goal, which came at 17:43 of the third period. That goal forced a 1-1 tie.

Storr made 37 saves on 38 St. Louis shots, proving a good pickup by the 'Canes. He also denied all 7 of St. Louis' powerplay chances, keeping Carolina in the game.

In the second period, Jaro Svoboda scored for the second time in 3 games in which he re-directed Bret Hedican's shot passed Bret Johnson. Johnson was prepared to make the chest save on Hedican's slapper, but instead, the puck found it's way through the five hole, making it 1-0 Carolina at 14:18.

Bret Johnson looked good for the rest of the game, giving St. Louis the chance to tie it. And they took advantage of it. Late in the third period, the Blues were cycling the puck well in the 'Canes zone. Demitra found a wide open Dallas Drake who fired the puck top-shelf past Storr. The Savvis Center crowed went crazy, knowing they would now most likely send the game into OT.

In the waning seconds of the third, Carolina had a chance in which Radim Vrbata had a cross-ice pass to Rod Brind'Amour. Johnson did a pad stack, but Brind'Amour still had the puck. Luckily enough for St. Louis, Brind'Amour's stick was tied up by a St. Louis defensemen, preventing him from getting the shot off.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie, giving both teams a point in the standings. Carolina played a physical game, laying 21 hits on the Blues.

Notes: Shots registered at 38-36 St. Louis.....Carolina had 2 powerplay chances, but didn't convert on any of them
