Re: The story of coach Andrew Meredith pt 2.(CH)

Miami, FLA(AP) The Florida International Golden Panthers picked up their first victory of the season in a game that was much closer then the already close enough score line.

"We had a lot of good moments in tonights game, but we also played sloppy when we had our ten point lead but we managed to rise above it all and come out with the W, and that's the important thing." Said head coach Andrew Meredith following this evenings game.

Meredith can thank his starting center Otis Wadood for that. Wadood but up a double double in tonight's game with fourteen points and tweleve rebounds.

The Golden Panthers look to continue their winning ways when they head out on the road to play George Washington University on November 24th.

Final Score FLA INTL 46. Howard 41

Panther Pizza Award Winner(POG) Otis Wadood 14 points, 12 REB, 4 ASSTS, 1 Steal.

Wadood The Hero as FIU emerges with W from nailbiter

Washington, DC(AP) Otis Wadood came up HUGE for the Florida International Golden Panthers for the second straight game. The Panthers were down two with less then a minute to go in regulation, and well here's Panthers Radio announcer Mike Anderson with the call.

"George Washington leads 47-45 with less then one minute to go as you just heard the announcement, Powell with the ball for the Panthers, pass inside to Wadood, fades away, WHISTLE, BALL RATTLES AROUND AND IT GOES IN. OH MY LORD WE GOT A TIE GAME WITH 48.1 TO GO IN THE GAME AND WADOOD TO THE LINE WITH A SHOT TO PUT THE PANTHERS AHEAD. Wadood to the line for the free throw, it's up, and... IT GOES! FIU LEADS 48-47 WITH 48.1 TO GO IN THE GAME. George Washington pressing now, knowing that they've got a shot to win it here, Wadood comes up and HE POKES IT AWAY, DAVENPORT COMES UP WITH IT, HE'S PUSHING IT UP COURT AND HE LAYS IT AND AND HE'S GOING TO THE LINE FOR ONE MORE, MY GOD THAT'S GOTTA BE ALL HERE."

Davenport went on to hit that freethrow and give the Panthers what would be an insurmountable lead and won 51-47.

"We started off real slow(in both halves)" said Panthers head coach Andrew Meredith, "But we came up big when it counted and that's why we're 2-0 right now."

Otis Wadood was also asked to comment on his performance in the game tonight

"I played good tonight, I got some key rebounds and I put in what turned out to be the game winning bucket and free throw. When I hit that free throw I felt real good because I'm not known as a good free throw shooter by any means. But I knew I could probably win it if I knocked it in, so I did."

Other key performances came from Guard Dominic Davenport of the Panthers who had seven points and three assists to go along with that big steal. But that's not to say George Washington didn't have their big players as well. Center Dennis Hunter combined with teammate Billy Brand for twenty points and a big twenty three rebound performance which kept the game close the entire night.

"We played our butts off tonight," Said Hunter following the game "But sometimes it's not good enough and you come out a little short in the end, but that's okay because we'll be back we're not the type of team that likes to go on long losing streaks, because we know we've got the talent here to contend and to string together some wins.

With the Win the Panthers improve to 2-0 on the early season while with the loss the Colonials will drop to .500 at 1-1.

Next Game for the Panthers is aganist Florida Atlantic on the road.

                Panthers Blow out State Rivals

The Florida International Golden Panthers started off fast and continued that pace for the entire game as they won in a complete blowout. 33 points was the difference as they picked up their third straight victory to start the year by a scoreline of 70-37.

Two big players for International was the ever consistant Otis Wadood who had a monster of a game. Collecting 25 points and 17 rebounds on the night. Another big contributer was Guard Allen Powell who had seventeen points and three assists to help his teams cause.

However Florida Atlantic head coach Mike Anderson took acception to the score line, saying that International was unsportsmanlike by running up the score.

"They had us burried at the half, and yet they continued to have their two best players in there almost all the time except when they got into foul trouble even when the game was way out of our reach, I don't think that that's very sportsmanlike and I will not stand for it."

The war of words continued once coach Meredith found out what his opposing coach had said about him as well as he team.

"He thinks I was running up the score by having two starters in there, well that poor son of a gun needs to recognize that everyone that was out there was contributing not just the two starters that were left out there, the young kids were getting minutes, you play every game like it's a championship, that's how you become a championship team."

The tones escalated when the two of them met in the hallway outside of the media room.

"There was 2.2 seconds left in the game Andy, you could have just inbounded and held the ball, but no you had to jack up another three," Anderson said

"I could have held the ball but I didn't, I put up another shot because there was time to put up another shot, and if you're so worried about it, try getting you kids to play some defense every once in a while," A now irrate coach Meredith said with a sly grin on his face.

And that's when all hell almost broke lose. Anderson came after Meredith who just stood his ground to a swearing, much smaller man in Anderson, Meredith just simply walked back to his teams locker room, leaving a very upset Mike Anderson and his words, behind him.

Are You kidding me? FIU Beats Miami in a barnburner

FIU jumped out to an early eleven point advantage and held a nine point lead at recess over the University of Miami Hurricanes. Game Over Right? Dead wrong! The Canes stormed back to make it a seven point game with less then a minute to go. Two quick threes put them to within one point with under ten seconds to go. Here's Scott Morrison with the call.

10.1 seconds remaining on the game clock, Miami down one point 65-64. Baseballed down to Wadood, wide open, HE BOBBLES IT, OFF HIS HANDS OUT OF BOUNDS. 6.9 TO GO, FIU STILL CLINGING TO A ONE POINT ADVANTAGE Miami Pushing up court, SULLIVAN FOR THREE AND THE WIN, OFF THE BACKBOARD....IN AND OUT NO GOOD! FIU SURVIVES! MY LORD WHAT AN UPSET HERE IN MIAMI!

But what followed next no one expected. Once again, here's Scott Morrison.

Miami Head Coach Andy Minor and FIU Head man Andrew Meredith meeting at center court and what a class act by Meredith shaking hands. But Meredith just said where are you going coach, and he grabbed a chair and set it up by the scorers table and climbed onto the table and now he's inviting Minor up there with him. MEREDITH JUST RAISED MINORS HAND IN THE AIR IN FRONT OF THE MIAMI CROWD, WHAT A GREAT AND UNEXPECTED SHOW OF SPORTSMANSHIP BY MEREDITH HERE!

"He's a class act," Said Hurricanes head coach Andy Minor, "What can I say, thats the last thing I would have expected from anybody, let alone him."

Meredith got wind of the comments and responded with some of his own,

"He gave us one hell of a game, and nearly gave me a heart attack," Meredith said jokingly, "It was the least I could do for the man,"

Panther Pizza Award Winner, Dominic Davenport.

With the win the Golden Panther now improve to an outstanding 4-0 on the season, and their next game will be aganist LaSalle.

                        Panthers: 4-0

FIU Squeaks by LaSalle to remain Undefeated

Miami, FLA(AP) Don't let the 77-68 score line misslead you, this game was much closer then it should have been.

The Golden Panthers held a twenty point advantage at the half and stretched it out to as many as twenty-eight during the second half when LaSalle starting forcing turnovers and got right back into this game.

"We played like absolute bull(Explict)during the second half tonight, if Lasalle woulda came back and beat us tonight I woulda been fine with it because it was our own damn fault that we didn't get off our asses that second half and keep pressing the entire time." An irrate Andrew Meredith said during the post game media confrence.

Nonetheless, the Panthers improved to 5-0 on the year and dropped LaSalle to a still very good 4-1 record.

Panther Pizza Award-no one deserved it.
