Panthers come back to win a gutsy performance

Denton, TX(AP) The Golden Panthers were down by nine with under 1:15 to go in the second half and they went on a 18-0 run to win it 67-56.

"We came through when we needed to," said a very emotional Andrew Meredith "We've never been down like that before and came back, we showed real heart out on that court tonight and we're champions no matter what the final score of the real championship says.

Injury Report:Thomas gone for Three Weeks

Ken Thomas is out for the next three weeks with a strained achiles.

"That's a big blow to us, he was consistant game in and game out and his presence will be missed, especially on the glass." commented coach Andrew Meredith at a media confrence.

Meredith also hinted that he may keep Thomas out a couple extra games to make sure that the injury is as healed as it could be.

No word yet on who will be replacing Thomas in the starting lineup but it will most likely be the surprising true freshman Ryan Scalzo.

Panthers come from behind again to beat Cajuns

Miami, FLA(AP) The Golden Panthers of FIU were down at one point nine points to the La. Laf. Ragin' Cajuns but stormed back to take a 70-69 lead with 41.8 remaining on the game clock. Nat Jackson added an insurance bucket with 8 seconds remaining to clinch the game.

Speaking of Jackson he had a double double tonight with 22 points and 10 rebounds, speaking of double doubles Otis Wadood also had one with 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

In fact everyone in the starting lineup had at least 10 points on the night except for freshman starter Ryan Scalzo who had eight points.

"We played really well down the stretch." said coach Andrew Meredith.

            Panthers Pizza Award winner presentation.

*Coach Andrew Meredith stands in the middle of the locker room, in his hand he holds one basketball, to his left lie two more.*

"I'll bet you're wondering why I have three balls, well it's a birth defect okay! I'm just as normal as any of you," Meredith said jokingly as the room laughed.

"But seriously, there is three award winners tonight, the first one is no stranger to this award, he had a double double tonight with 12 points and 12 boards, Otis Wadood!"

*The locker room cheers as Wadood grabs his game ball and stands next to his coach as he picks up the second basketball,*

"This second one goes to someone who hasn't gotten one yet this season, but he's gonna get one now double double, 22 points, 10 boards, gentlemen Nate Jackson,"

*The locker room lets out a moderate cheer as Jackson accepts his game ball and stands next to his teammate and his coach picks up the final game ball*

"The one goes to a kid who'll probably get a lot more over his career, he didn't have a double double tonight but he did one hell of a job filling in for one of our walking wounded, this one goes to the freshman Ryan Scalzo!"

*The entire locker room lets out an uproar that you could probably hear and feel all the way to the ends of the earth as a very shocked and surprised Ryan Scalzo goes up and accepts his game ball.*

*Thanks coach," Scalzo said to his coach

            "No man, thank you,"

Panthers Fast Fact: the two double doubles tonight for the Golden Panthers is the most they've had all season.

Panthers come from behind yet again to beat aggies

The Golden Panthers squeaked out a very slim 63-60 victory tonight over the New Mexico State University Aggies.

"We're getting used to being the under dogs in games and having to come from behind is beginning to become like second nature to us now," commented head coach Andrew Meredith

He jokingly followed that up by saying "They should change our nicknames from the Golden Panthers to the comeback kids we're doing it so much."

Kent Dukes played the majority of the game tonight in place of Otis Wadood who got into foul trouble early and didn't return.

Dukes had 18 points and nine rebounds on the night.

"I put in a really solid effort tonight," said Dukes following the game, "Some more playing time would be nice but you've got to take what you can get at this level."

Panther Pizza Award Winner: Kent Dukes

In polls news the Panthers are listed in the others recieving votes category in the ESPN top 25 poll(46 pts), in the USA Today Press Poll(96 pts), and they cracked the top 25 in the rpi currently sitting at #24 on that list with 6418 points.

"It feels good to finally get some national recognition, we're not a school that's known to be a powerhouse, especially in a state that's more known for it's football then it's basketball." Said head coach Andrew Meredith when he was informed of the news.

Panthers Blow out Hilltoppers by 21
Miami, FLA(AP) The Golden Panthers of Florida International jumped out to an early 18-3 lead over confrence foes Western Kentucky and that would be a lead that they would not relenquish as the went on to win the game by a score of 76-65.

"We got the fast break going right away and it carried through right until the final buzzer,"A notably impressed Andrew Meredith said following the game.

Trace Hunt had 23 in his return to the starting line up.

"Felt good to finally be out there again," said Hunt on his performance

Kent Dukes filled in nicely for the injured Otis Wadood putting up a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Also filling in nicely for the walking wounded was Ryan Scalson who is replacing the injured Ken Thomas who is cleared to comeback next week but no word on whether he will start right away, however, due to precautionary reasons from coach Andrew Meredith.

                        Panthers: 15-1(7-0)

"Felt good to finally be out there again," said Hunt on his performance

Kent Dukes filled in nicely for the injured Otis Wadood putting up a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Also filling in nicely for the walking wounded was Ryan Scalson who is replacing the injured Ken Thomas who is cleared to comeback next week but no word on whether he will start right away, however, due to precautionary reasons from coach Andrew Meredith.

                            Panthers: 15-1(7-0)

Poll Update The Golden Panthers are still in the others recieveing votes category in both the ESPN and Press polls, and on some not as good news they fell out of the top 25 in the RPI rankings but are still noted as being one of the top teams in the rpi who didn't quite crack the top 25 list.
