Amazing Comeback Pitt Victory at Peterson's

    South Carolina @ Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has played cupcakes all year, constantly knocked my Vitale for only difficult tests against Memphis and Oklahoma State, in which they failed. The Panthers would get another big test in tonight's matchup with South Carolina.

South Carolina is playing very good ball at 7-3. It was also evident when they came out and embarassed the Panthers on the road. Krauser has been the key for the Panthers every game this season, but he was a non-factor in tonights game. He complained about the refs calling "ticky-tack" fouls, and had an early exit, leaving the game in the second half with 13 minutes left because he fouled out. South Carolina stepped up with his absence, and led the game at the break, 40-22.

This game had blowout written all over it, but Pitt showed tremendous heart and fought their way back into the game with 6 minutes left. Chris Taft scored all 21 of his points in the second half, and played great defense on the other end. Freshman guards Keith Benjamin and John DeGroat got out in transition with high-flying dunks to ignite the crowd.

Pitt had the last possesion of the game, in which they went inside to Taft who got fouled with no time left. The game was tied, and he sunk the two free-throws to win the basketball game.

Pitt pulled off an amazing comeback and win 65-63.

    Pittsburgh Stats
Chris Taft 21 points, 9 rebounds
Chevvy Troutman 8 points, 10 rebounds
Mark McCarroll 13 points, 8 rebounds

    South Carolina Stats
Josh Gonner 27 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assist
Terence Kinsey 13 points, 6 assist

      Panthers Chase Ryan Howel

Ryan Howel looks for an oppurtunity out of New Jersey
      ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
Ryan Howel, a combo guard out of Trenton, NJ is looking forward to going to college and playing ball. He has obvious talent, but was patient enough to not sign with the first suitor. Pittsburgh looks like his number one choice, but he also considers Maryland, Wake Forest, UNC and Duke.
      ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

He's 6'2", 190 lbs as of now. He's a 'gamer' as scouts put out, and shows extraordinary offensive awareness. They say he really won't take over a game from either guard position, but he can control the wing from the point or from the wing. He's decent and slightly above average in almost every facet of the game, but his intelligence and hustle make him a Top 10 shooting guard (although projected to play point guard to any school he goes to) in this recruiting class.

Pittsburgh's first '05 Big East Game is a Good One

          Georgetown 6-4 (0-0) @ Pittsburgh 10-2 (0-0)
          @ Peterson's Events Center

Pittsburgh faces Georgetown in their first game of the 2005 Big East season. Coming into the game, they knew they'd have to disturb Brandon Bowman's athleticism and take him out of the game.

          - - - - -
The game was constantly changing leads to begin, but Pittsburgh hit a huge stride in which they went on a 14-3 run, and later a 10-0 run to end the first half. Freshman sensation Keith Benjamin had 14 points on 7-8 shooting to lead the Panthers to a 40-28 halftime lead.
          - - - - -

In the second half, both teams play solid, but Georgetown had a run early in the second half to bring them within 4. They were never really able to close the gap for good in this game. Brandon Bowman continued to be Pittsburgh's matchup problem, but he was often the only option for offense. With 6 minutes left in the second, they tied the game, but Pittsburgh went inside to their horse, Chris Taft, and virtually put the game away. Pittsburgh sneaks out with a win, 64-58.

Howel sounds like he'd make an excellent addition to your squad, assuming Krauser makes an early departure. Even if he doesn't, the backcourt between those two would be nice.

Anyway - Damn, Bowman lit you up homie. Big win, though. Good luck against Rutgers, they have some pretty solid shooters.

Pittsburgh has played the majority of their basketball games at home, or a neutral site. They go into New Jersey today to meet the surging Scarlet Knights at 9-1, surprising people.
                  - - - - -
Both teams were even for most of the game, but Rutgers' guards Quincy Douby and Ricky Shields were the most counted players for Rutgers and they provided. Pittsburgh achillies heel has been defending good wing perimeter players, and it killed them today.
                  - - - - -
Pittsburgh was athletic enough to keep in the game with a few small spurts, but Rutgers simply closed the deal in the last 3 minutes when they shut down the Panthers offense. In result, Rutgers won the game, surprisingly, 77-72.
