Texas Longhorns vs Marquette Golden Eagles
Tropical Invitational Tournament - Championship - University of Hawaii

The Longhorns of Texas and the Marquette Golden Eagles squared off in a battle of unbeatens in the Tropical Invitational Championship.

In the first half, both teams played very well. The two squads traded baskets for much of the first period, and neither team seemed to gain much of an advantage. Texas freshman Daniel Gibson lit up the Golden Eagles in the first half, but the Longhorns only held a one point lead going into the intermission.

Travis Diener, who was, for the most part, quiet in the first half, went off in the second. Hitting shot after shot and dishing off assist after assist, Diener's play was the reason the Eagles were able to contend with Texas.

With a minute left, the score was tied. Kenny Taylor hit a clutch three for the Horns, but Steve Novak quickly answered with a bomb himself. After Texas blew a possession, Marquette held for the last shot. Diener dribbled his way into the corner, and with one second left, released his 8th three point shot of the game.. beating the Longhorns and winning the tournament championship, 70-67.

        Players Of The Game
        MARQ - Travis Diener - 28 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds
        TEX - Kenny Taylor - 18 points, 4 rebounds

        MARQ
        Novak - 22 points, 5 assists
        Mason - 10 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds

        TEX
        Gibson - 12 points, 14 assists
        Tucker - 12 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists

Damn Diener went nuts against those guys. He should have a similar game against Delaware St. We've got Delaware St. (2-12) our my next MEAC game. The scouting report says if we play our game we should be able to give it to 'em.

Yeah, I should run the Hornets pretty badly.

On another note.. Diener for POY.

                        Bradley Center - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Delaware State Hornets traveled northwest to Wisconsin to take on the Golden Eagles of Marquette University.

After witnessing the Hornets' horrendous shooting performance in the early going, people were forced to believe the cold weather outside had an affect on DSC's game. They were unable to do anything on the basketball court except look stupid when Travis Diener & Co. drove right by them.

The second half was boring, as Marquette got up by 30 and took their starters out of the game. After all was said and done, Marquette won 77-58.

                            Recruiting Update
                            Kerry Bernard, Florida's Mr. Basketball

The Marquette Golden Eagles had been contacting Kerry Bernard, the #3 point guard in the class, for the entire season to date. When Travis Diener departs after this season, the Golden Eagles would be without a good guard to lead the attack, and that's exactly what Bernard would do. Out of Hialean, Florida, Bernard is an offensive force that can do it all, including a lights out three-point shot and great potential.

On the last day of the fall signing period, Marquette got their guy, as Bernard signed his letter of intent to play with the Golden Eagles next season. He will be playing in the High School All-Star Game later this season, so everybody will get a first-hand look at the next great Marquette point guard.

                            Top 5 Recruits

The fall signing period has come and gone, and this is what the top players of the five positions have decided..

                            1. C - Stevin Parker - Seattle, Washington* - UNDECIDED - The #1 prospect in this year's recruiting class is simply a force on the inside and outside. This 6'10" big man can handle the dirty work or step outside and hit a three-pointer. Parker is still undecided on what college he is going to next year, but Washington is the frontrunner in the Parker-sweepstakes.

                            2. PF - Stanley Duncan - San Antonio, Texas* - SIGNED WITH BAYLOR - The best power forward in the class signed to lowly Baylor, and will definitely be welcomed by the Bears program next season. Another big guy, standing at 6'11", Duncan has his fundamentals down and has great potential to be a force for years to come.

                            3. SF - Andry Winkfield - Brooklyn, New York* - SIGNED WITH DUKE - Winkfield is a lights out offensive player that can do it all. A very smart player, Winkfield will thrive under Coach K's guidance and coaching.

                            4. SG - Demetrius Daniels - Mobile, Alabama* - UNDECIDED - Daniels is still not sure what school to accept a scholarship from, but lists his top schools at Kentucky and Duke. He is a great athlete, and will turn out nicely no matter where he decides to go to school.

                            5. PG - Sheray Atkinson (JC So.) - Memphis, Tennessee - SIGNED WITH VANDERBILT - This junior college product will head to Vanderbilt for his junior season in college. A very quick, intelligent player, Atkinson will turn out to be a force at the D1 level.

                            * denotes Mr. Basketball

The Marquette Golden Eagles take on rival Wisconsin in the Bradley Center tonight

The Wisconsin-state rivalry between the Badgers and Marquette Golden Eagles has been going for years, and the two schools will meet for the 111th time tonight. The Eagles enter the game ranked 20th in the nation, whereas the Badgers find themselves sitting at 4-2 in a "rebuilding year" of sorts.

This year's matchup is being held in Milwaukee at the Bradley Center, where the Golden Eagles have a 36-25 record against the Badgers. Like every rivalry game, this one will be close, no matter how lopsided the talent is.
