Travis Diener leads Marquette into 2004-2005 season

After finishing 17-11 last year in an up and down season, the Marquette Golden Eagles are hoping to rebound. The Eagles have two key components to last years team, Travis Diener and Steve Novak, returning, and expect to get production from the top and bottom of the lineup. To begin the 2004-05 season, this is what the starting lineup looks like..

    The Starting Lineup..

pg - Travis Diener - After adding almost 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason, Diener returns to the Golden Eagles as a preseason All-American up for the John R. Wooden and Bob Cousy Awards. He will be expected to score and distribute the rock, and he's more than capable of doing so.

sg - Dameon Mason - This sophomore sensation is a dynamic scorer, and can put the ball into the hoop almost at will against any team in the nation. He'll only grow as a player, but Marquette faithful are excited about this guy already.

sf - Steve Novak - If there was ever such a thing as a 6'10" forward with a jumper ranging across three area codes, Novak's that guy. He is also a natural scorer, and will be expected to carry a big load this season.

pf - Marcus Jackson - Jackson, a senior out of Illinois, is an awesome rebounder. He won't be expected to score, but please believe he'll get his fair share of points off of offensive rebounds.

c - Mike Kinsella - This sophomore towers over most players in the nation at an astounding 7'. Again, he won't be expected to carry much of the scoring load, but he'll get his share of points.

    Key Reserves..

    g - Joe Chapman
    f - Ryan Amoroso
    f - Todd Townsend
    f - Chris Grimm

#24 Iowa Hawkeyes vs Marquette Golden Eagles
Tropical Invitational Tournament - 1st Round - University of Hawaii

The 24th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes took on the Marquette Golden Eagles at a neutral site in the Tropical Invitational Tournament.

In the early stages, it was all Marquette, specifically Travis Diener. Doing a little bit of everything, the senior point guard acted as a catalyst for the Eagles' offense and lead them to a more than comfortable 13 point lead going into the half.

The second half was much of the same, and the Golden Eagles continued to whoop up on the Hawkeyes. Iowa was unable to get anything major going, although their backcourt, at times, looked decent. However, Marquette was just too much, and won the game 65-57

                    Players Of The Game
                    MARQ - Travis Diener - 23 points, 13 assists, 6 rebounds
                    IOWA - Jeff Horner - 21 points, 11 assists, 4 steals, 3 rebounds

                    MARQ
                    Mason - 23 points, 4 assists
                    Novak - 13 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals

                    IOWA
                    Pierce - 17 points, 4 assists
                    Haluska - 11 points, 4 rebounds

North Carolina Tar Heels vs Marquette Golden Eagles
Tropical Invitational Tournament - 2nd Round - University of Hawaii

The UNC "Tar Holes" hooked up with the Golden Eagles of Marquette University in the second round of the Tropical Invitational.

Rashad McCants and Jawad Williams ran the game from the get-go, but senior leader Travis Diener wouldn't let his team fall too far behind. In the opening minutes alone, the point guard hit 5 threes, allowing his team to jump out to an early lead. McCants often tried to answer with threes of his own, but they stopped dropping, and Marquette's other scoring options picked up the slack, helping the Eagles pull away.

The second half couldn't have went better for the Golden Eagles, as Diener continued to light it up from the perimeter and Steve Novak did the same. Sean May was included in the Tar Heels' offensive attack, and pulled down some key rebounds, but UNC fell short to Marquette, 82-69.

                        Players Of The Game
                        MARQ - Travis Diener - 40 points, 11-15 3PT FG, 10 assists, 4 rebounds
                        UNC - Rashad McCants - 21 points, 4 assists

                        MARQ
                        Novak - 20 points, 3 assists
                        Mason - 14 points, 3 assists

                        UNC
                        J. Williams - 18 points, 11 rebounds
                        May - 14 points, 8 rebounds
