Re: The Career of Bryan Dodge (NCAA11)

I try to comment as much as I can during the week.. but work gets in the way until Thursday night. (I dont work Friday through Sunday).

If you're gonna beat either TCU or Notre Dame... beat ND I don't like them.

        WEEK 1

        VS #13

        GAME PREVIEW

This would mark the Cougars 2nd trip to South Bend and the 3rd meeting of these 2 teams in the past 9 seasons. The last time WSU made the trip to South Bend was in 2003 when they took a lead into the 4th Quarter before losing the game 29-26 over some horrific calls.
Even though none of the players or coaching staff is still around, the game tape was played by Coach Dodge all week to help give some extra "MO" to his team and staff.

        THE GAME RECAP

The first half was full of big plays and big hits. The Irish started strong with QB A. Hendriks completing 4/6 passes before 47 yds before being helped off the field with a ankle injury (broken 10 weeks). SR Nate Montana (son of legendary Joe Montana and brother of Washington Huskies Starting QB Nick) would struggle as the Irish were forced to punt. Jeff Tuell would lead the offense onto the field and led 2 Touchdown drives (6 yd pass to R. Jiles and 6 yd pass to T McCoy) before also being forced to leave the game. Conner Haliday would enter and prove he too could play some ball, hitting R. Jiles for his 2nd TD to give WSU the 21-0 lead with 2 minutes to play. After another huge stop by the Cougar "D" Halliday would lead the Cougars down the field looking to add yet another TD, but the Irish would come up big stopping the drive and with 2 seconds to play, Coach Dodge would run out R. Parrish for his 1st college FG attemp. The Freshman would hit the 19 yd kick to give WSU the 24-0 lead into the half.

Montana would finally find his grove in the 3rd Quarter hitting A. Welch on a 10 yd TD pass, and then hit Welch again on the 2pt conversion to make it 24-8. Haliday however would struggle throwing 2 INT's but the "D" would step up keeping the Irish from scoring again as well.

The 4th Quarter started out all Irish as C. Wood scored 2 TD's on the ground (8 yds and 24 yds) to make the game (24-21) after a failed 2pt conversion. With Haliday struggling, the Cougs would go to the ground and C. Winston would deliver breaking off a 52 yd TD run with 2 minutes as the 5,000 fans who traveled went wild. (31-21). Montana would complete 3/3 passes moving the offense down field, but the Cougar D would finally step up forcing the Irish with a decsion to go for it on 4th and 4 and Simmons would show his pass deflecting abilities coming up huge forcing the turnover. Again looking to run out the clock, Haliday would hand of to Winston, but again the RS JR would break off a huge run going 40 yds before getting tackled from behind. With 20 seconds left on the clock, most assumed the Cougs would just kneel down, but Coach Dodge instead ran out the field goal unit as R. Parrish would connect on the 24 yd kick as time expired.

        FINAL SCORE WSU-34 ND-21

POST GAME COMMENTS BY COACH DODGE

"It's not everyday a team can overcome 5 turnovers and still win the game. The game ball goes to our "D" tonight. They played amazing. Even though we didn't create any turnovers of our own, they did a great job of making big plays when needed. I know most of you want to know what's going on with J. Tuell, and from what the trainers have told me he has 3 broken ribs which will keep him out 3-4 weeks. Conner will start but we will prepare Roland to be ready in case something happens."

          WEEK 1 RECAP

The WSU upset over #13 Notre Dame wasn't the only game to make National headlines this week.

La Tech made this most of their chance to take on #1 LSU and brought a exciting game knocking off the Tigers 37-15!!

Last year #8 Oregon started the year #3 but fell to K-State in Manhattan. dropping quickly in the polls which never allowed them to recover in order to play in the National Title game. This year the Ducks made sure that would happen as they beat the Wildcats 37-6

Here is a recap of several other big games

          #7 Boise State-35 UTEP-7
          #20 Michigan State-31 Eastern Michigan-16
          #22 Cincinnati-21 San Diego State-14
          #4 Nebraska-38 Rutgers-7
          #14 Stanford-41 San Jose State-21
          Oregon State-38 Nevada-10
          Iowa-35 UNT-14

(With the loss, #1 LSU falls to #18, and Notre Dame drops from #13 to #25)

I will get your player in next year, as the #1 spot. I am limiting it to 5 players each year.

I'd like to officially lodge a complaint... as "upset over Notre Dame" is clearly some type of error or oxymoron or something...

(just kidding, couldn't resist taking a shot at the Irish)

                    WEEK 2

                    (1-0) @ #19

                    GAME PREVIEW

For the 2nd straight week the Cougars would be taking to the road to take on a Top-25 team, and for the 2nd straight year they would be doing it without their #1 starting QB. Last year RS FR C. Haliday played well in the relief last year, so Coach Dodge hoped it would happen again.

                    GAME RECAP

It was a Defensive battle from the start and the underated Cougars stepped up, holding TCU to just 3 FG's in the 1st half. However they were not the on Defense playing well. TCU kept WSU off the scoreboard until just 14 seconds remained when Haliday finally connected with B. Ratliff on a 17 yd TD pass to make it 9-7 going into the locker room.

WSU would get the ball 1st in the 2nd half, and with 4 minutes to play in the 3rd Q, C. Winston would run in from 1yd out to give WSU the lead (14-9) TCU would answer back scoring their 1st TD of the game with 1:31 to play in the 3rd as M. Tucker rumbles in from 1yd out to make it 15-14, TCU would elect to for the 2pt conversion and score making it 17-14 going into the 4th.

In the 4th Quarter a costly INT in the endzone by Haliday would prevent WSU from retaking the lead and TCU would add on 2 FG's the last coming with just 2 minutes to play to give the Hornfrogs a 23-14 lead. Down by 9, Coach Dodge made a interesting move putting in true freshman J. Roland at QB. The Freshman would complete his first 2 pass attempts moving the ball down field but then on a 3rd and 4, his pass would be tipped at the line of scrimmage and fall into the hands of a TCU defender. On the very next play M. Tucker would dance through the defense on his way to a 62 yd TD. The 2pt conversion would fail though making it 29-14. When the Cougar Offense would retake the field with just 55 seconds remaining it was C. Haldiay leading them out. Haliday would work his magic connecting on 4/4 passes before hitting R. Jiles on a 13 yd TD pass to make it 29-21. Down by 8pts WSU would try for the onside kick, but the Hornfrogs were ready and after WSU used their last 2 timeouts. TCU would kneel down the ball to hold on to the win.

                    FINAL SCORE WSU-21 TCU-29

                    KEY PLAYERS

                    QB C. Haliday-21/42 330 yds 2 TD 1 INT
                    QB J. Roland-2/5 32 yds 1 INT
                    RB C. Winston-7 carries 11 yds (1.5 avg)

                    WR R. Jiles-2 rec 24 yds 1 TD
                    MLB L. Bland-11 tackles (6 solo)
                    ROLB C. Mizzell-8 tackles (7 solo)

                    RB M. Tucker-29 carries 211 yds (7.2 Avg) 2 TD
                    PK D. McCoy-5/5 FG

POST GAME COMMENTS BY COACH DODGE

"Do I regret putting in Roland and not sticking with Haliday? NO. Roland made some plays and his INT wasn't like he was trying to throw into double coverage or anything. I felt like Conner needed a chance to regroup and forget about his previous INT in the endzone. We lost today, because the O-Line failed to block and open holes, thus we were forced into 3rd and long situations which in turn forced us to throw the ball alot. The "D" played well enough to help us win, but in the end 2 big plays by Tucker made it look like we gave up alot of yards. That's part of the game too. We can't keep thinking about what went wrong and need to think about what we did right moving on. We have a week off next week which gives us 2 weeks to prepare for USC, so they better be ready because I know we will be."

Normally winning over Notre Dame wouldn't be considered a upset, but being how they were ranked #13 and it was a home game, I figured I would give them the benifit of being the favorite to win. Then again ,both Herbie and Corso picked them as well.

                            WASHINGTON STATE COUGAR TEAM REPORT

JEFF TUELL TO MISS MATCHUP WITH #17 USC

Tuell will miss his 2nd straight game with Broken ribs. Conner Haliday will get the start. Haliday is 36/65 with 526 yds 3 TD/4 INT so far this season.

COACH DODGE SAYS THE TEAM MUST RUN FOR 100 YDS

After watching JR C. Winston rush for 150 yds in the win over Notre Dame, the Coach has publically called out his 0-Line and Tailback C. Winston saying this must get 100 yds on the ground in order to beat USC this week. Coach Dodge also stated that FR P. Smith will be taken out of the rotation in the backfield with Winston projected to take 90% of the touches and FR R. Mayfield still getting some looks on short down situations.

DEPTH AT WR IS A GOOD THING

Even though SR I. Barton has 20 rec for 355 yds in the first 2 games, he has still yet to catch a TD. FR T. McCoy is 2nd on the team with 10 rec for 110 yds but its been SO R. Jiles who has caught 6 balls but 3 of them for scores.

                            COACH DODGE CHALLENGES THE "D"

Even though the Defense has looked dominating at times in the first 2 games, they have yet to record a turnover (INT or Fumble) and have gotten only 2 sacks. If they have any chance against #17 USC that will have to change.

                              WEEK 4

                              (1-1) @ #17 (0-1)

                              GAME PREVIEW

USC has dominated the Cougars of late winning the past 13 meetings between them. (Stike 1). This would mark the Cougars 3rd straight road game vs a Top-25 team (Stike 2). The Trojans are coming off a disappointing loss to Rutgers and are looking to take out their fustrations on the Courgars Run Defense (Strike 3).

Nobody expects the Cougars to win the game but 1 man. Coach Dodge believes that on any give Saturday his team has the potential to beat anyone in the nation. The question is does his team believe it?

                              GAME RECAP

Like the previous 2 games, the WSU "D" would play well in the 1st Quarter keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard, but the same could be said of their opponent though too.

WSU however was driving as the quarter ended, and just a minute into the 2nd Quarter WR I. Barton would catch his 1st TD of the season (10 yds from Haliday) to give WSU the 7-0 lead. USC would battle back though tying the game with 2:27 to play as J. Scroggins hits R. Woods on a 1yd slant. (7-7) WSU would get a chance to put some points on the board before the end of the half, but R. Parrish 32 yd FG would bounce off the left upright giving the ball back to USC with just under a minute to play. It would take the Trojans just 3 plays and 20 seconds to score though as D. Baxter rumbles in from 3 yds out putting USC up 14-7 at the half.

WSU would get the ball to open the 2nd half, but C. Haliday would miss his WR and instead the ball would fall into the hands of B. Baucham who would return the pass 49 yds for the score. The PAT was no good though giving USC the 20-7 lead. WSU would continue to work the ball down field using the run and with 1:38 to play FR P. Smith would score his 1st TD of his career from 1yd out to make it 20-14.

                              D. Baxter however wasn't done showing the Cougars what he could do as he bounced off Cougar defenders running 34 yds for the score. USC would go for 2pt and convert to make it 28-14. Again WSU would move the ball down field with ease and again a FR RB would score his 1st TD of his career. This time it was R. Mayfield going in from 3 yds out to make it 28-21 with 4 minutes to play. Coach Dodge would elect to kickoff and hope the Defense could get a stop and they would, but then on 3rd down I. Barton would have a rare drop forcing WSU to punt. Needing a turnover, Coach Dodge told his Defense to step up and take chances, instead they were burned for a 40 yd TD pass from Scroggins to D. Flournoy. (35-21) However on 3 passes in 20 seconds it was I. Barton catching his 2nd TD of the game to make it (35-28) as this game turned into a shootout. WSU would elect for the onside kick, and it looked like they had recovered but a late yellow flag showed WSU offsides and the ball went to USC. A minute later USC had the ball down to the 1yd line. On a 3rd down play A. Beck caught the ball off the hands of C. Simmons however it looked like he failed to get a foot inbounds as the refs called a incomplete pass, but Lane Kiffin challenged and on the replay it showed 1 foot was in giving USC the TD. Again J. Young's PAT attempt would miss though making it 41-28 with 1:39 to play. Again drop passes would plague the Cougars but finally on a 3rd and 8, Barton would hold onto the ball catching his 3rd TD (23 yds) over 2 USC defenders to make it 41-35 with 40 seconds to play. Again Coach Dodge would call for the onside kick but a unlucky bounce would put the ball into the hands of USC and with only 2 timeouts left, the Trojans were able to run out the clock.

POST GAME COMMENTS FROM COACH DODGE

"Again what can I say, I felt like we played well enough to win the game, but in the 4th Quarter we had 6 dropped balls!!

You have to give Lane Kiffin credit, this team came ready to play. Baxter was a beast, when I put 8 guys in the box, Scroggins made plays, when I dropped back in pass coverage Baxter would run for 6 yds. There was nothing we could do right. I felt like we did a great job of cutting down on our turnovers, the O-Line and RB's stepped up giving us 100+ yds on the ground, but in the end when we need a turnover or a stop the "D" wasn't able to come through."
