Boise State to play for National Title??

For the 1st time in the history of the BCS rankings, it might actually work. It's been a super crazy year in the Top-25 as only #15 Missouri still has a undefeated season at 11-0 and we might actually finally see Boise State play for a National Title.

The Broncos are 9-1, having lost to #16 SMU (8-2), however 5 straight wins and only a game @ UNLV (2-8) have the Broncos currently sitting at the #1 Ranking in the BCS and the #1 Ranking in the Coaches Poll.

#2 Michigan (8-2) moved up 3 spots after beating previous #1 Nebraska handing the CornHuskers their 2nd loss of the season (10-2). Nebraska falls to #3 in the latest ratings.. TCU (9-2) is #4 well Oregon (8-2) is #5. The Hornfrogs still have a Mississippi (6-4) and the Big 12 Championship game to strengthen their bid, well the Ducks still have games vs #13 USC (9-1) and instate rival Oregon State (0-9).

Here is a look at the rest of the Top-10
#6 Alabama (9-2, they have a FCS school remaining)
#7 LSU (9-2, they have to play #12 Arkansas)
#8 Florida State (8-2, they have to play #10 Florida)
#9 Cincinnati (8-2, they still have #17 WVU)
#10 Florida (10-1, they still have to play FSU)

        WEEK 13

        (5-5) VS #24 (7-2)

        GAME RECAP

WSU would struggle to move the ball in the 1st Quarter as the Utes jump out to a 7-0 lead on a 5 yd run by S. Shakerin.

In the 2nd Quarter, the Cougs would get on the scoreboard with a 28 yd FG, then with 2 minutes to play L. Mitz would dive in from 1 yd out to give WSU the 10-7 lead. Utah would move the ball down the field easily as J. Wynn hits Shakerin on a 8 yd score with 41 seconds to play in the half. Utah would miss the PAT though making it 13-10. Never one to back down for a chance to put points on the board, Coach Dodge let his team air it out and after a 20 yd completion from Tuell to Simone, the Cougars found paydirt. Utah sent the house on a blitz, and Tuell found Simone once again down the sideline wide open for the 55 yd score as WSU goes into the half up 17-13

The Cougar "D" would step up huge in the 3rd Quarter keeping the Utes off the scoreboard and C. Winston would add a 4 yd TD run to make it 24-13 going into the 4th.

WSU would get another TD from Tuell to Barton (4 yds) to make it 31-13. But Utah was not ready to give up. Wynn would connect with G. McNabb on a 64 yd bomb with 4 minutes to play, after hitting the 2pt conversion it was 31-21. Coach Dodge would try and stick to the ground game but on 3rd and 3, C. Winston would cough up the ball giving the Utes the ball with 2 minutes to play. It only took 36 seconds as Wynn passes for his 3rd TD of the game (3 yds T. Reese) to make it 31-28 with 1:24 to play. Again Coach Dodge would look to run time off the clock as Utah was out of timeouts and this time it work as the Cougars pulled off the huge upset win, making the school bowl elgible for the 1st time since 2003.
        FINAL SCORE WSU-31 UTAH-28

        KEY PLAYERS

        QB. J Tuell-24/51 342 yds 2 TD
        RB C. Winston-29 carries 95 yds 1 TD

        QB J. Wynn-21/35 305 yds 3 TD 1 INT
        RB S. Shakerin 6 carries 25 yds 1 TD, 6 rec 43 yds 1 TD
        WR G. McNabb 5 rec 131 yds 1 TD

POST GAME COMMENTS BY COACH DODGE

This was a huge win for me, the player and this universtiy. To become bowl elgible was a goal of ours from day 1. It was so exciting last year to take UNT to a Bowl game and I look forward to being able to lead the Cougars to the same opportunity. Jeff Tuell has played amazing since coming back from injury. I was very happy with our overall performance tonight. I thought we ran the ball well and when need Tuell made some big throws.

COACH DODGE LANDS 6 PLAYERS SO FAR

Coach Dodge and his staff landed 3* DT J. Wilson (#108) in Week 1 and 2* Tackle 6'7 346 lbs J. Grant (#113) in Week 3, but Week 13 finally brought the Cougars the success they were looking for as 4 players make their comment to Washington State. Here is a look at the 4 players joining WSU next season.
          3* SS G. Keyes (#24)
"Has the potential to be a instant starter and hopefully playmaker in the secondary"

          3* WR T. McCoy (#199)
"At 6'4 he is a clone of current Coug J. Kartsetter, look for McCoy to step in next to Barton giving Tuell another option in the passing game next season"

          3* HB R. Mayfield (#105)
"At 6'0 206 lbs, Mayfield is more of a between the tackles runner. He might be just what the Cougar running attack has been missing"

          3* HB P. Smith (#117)
"Only 5'10 and 168 lbs. Smith is small but he is fast (B+ Speed). We hope he can be the lighting to Mayfield's thunder"

Coach Dodge on recruiting so far "It's been tough to convience kids to come to Pullman, when you havn't won for so long, not everybody is onboard with the idea of helping rebuild a program. However I am excited with what we have so far. We are close to signing a future QB and our staff is always looking at guys who might fall through the cracks and not get offers from other schools in the area."

            WEEK 14

            BATTLE FOR THE APPLE

            (6-5) VS (4-7)

            GAME PREVIEW

When these 2 teams meet you can generally throw out the records. The Huskies have dominated the series though with a 65-31-6 record, including last years win in Seattle. However WSU did win in 2008 when the game was played in Pullman and in 2004. So hopefully the home field advantage will work yet again. UW has been trying for the past 2 years to convience WSU to move the game to Qwest Field every year, but Coach Dodge is in full support of making sure that never happens.

            GAME RECAP

Washington would get on the scoreboard 1st with a 46 yd FG by E. Folk, but WSU would answer back with a TD pass from Tuell to Simone (4 yds). Then it was Simone again catching a 43 yd pass to make it 14-3 with 3 minutes to play in the half. UW would get into the endzone though as N. Montana hit C. Polk on a 4 yd screen pass but a missed PAT would make it 14-9 with less then 2 minutes to play in the half.

The Huskies would own the 3rd Quarter holding WSU to zero points and it was Montana again going to the air hitting J. Kearse on a 28 yd TD strike. The 2pt conversion was good as UW took a 17-14 lead into the 4th.

The 4th Quarter belonged to Jeff Tuell. The Junior hit J. Kartsetter on a 23 yd TD pass to give WSU the 21-17 lead and then with 2 minutes to play Tuell scrambled 74 yds for the longest run of the season by a Cougar to secure the Apple Cup win!!!

            FINAL SCORE WSU-28 UW-17

            KEY PLAYERS

            QB J. Tuell-18/34 235 yds 3 TD's, 4 carries 80 yds 1 TD

Coach Dodge comments on the Pac-10

"I am very surprised to see OSU go 0-9. That was us just last year. I expect Coach Riley to turn things around and for them to play well next year. Never in my life did I think we could go from last to 3rd. Right now the way the bowl projections have Oregon playing in the Rose Bowl vs Wisconsin, USC in the Alamo Bowl vs Iowa and we are playing Texas in the Holiday Bowl!!!"

CAN BOISE STATE HOLD ON TO #2?

Michigan has taken over the #1 BCS Ranking as well as the #1 Media Ranking, however the Coaches Poll still has the Broncos #1 leaving the BCS Points tied at .997

Nebraska is #3 but with their move to the Big Ten, the Cornhuskers don't have a Big 12 Title game to help them leap frog and move into the National Title Game.

Oregon is #4 in the BCS and their season is over as well leaving only #5 Florida (11-1) .978 in the polls as the only team capable of knocking the Broncos out of the Championship game. The Gators will face #7 LSU in the SEC Championship.

MISSOURI'S B. GABBERT TAKES HOME THE HEISMAN

After failing to land a spot in the Big Ten, the Tigers were left outside looking in as the Big 12 moved quickly to replace them, the Missouri was forced to find refuge in CUSA. The Tigers have adapted well as they were the only team to finish with a perfect record going 13-0 but the level of competition has left them sitting at #6 in the nation. However their QB made sure the nation knew his name.

Gabbert finished the year with 4305 yds 44 TD's and just 8 Int's as he finished #1 in the voting.

The Duo of Kyle Pardon and B. Haynes led #11 SMU to a 10-2 Record and a perfect 8-0 in the MWC (only team to beat BSU). For their efforts they finish #2 and #3 in the voting, but that didn't keep them from taking home some hardware.

                      Pardon (Maxwell,Walter Payton,O'Brien)-5206 yds 51 TD's!! 13 Ints

                      Haynes (Bilentnikoff)-146 rec 1817 yds 16 TD's.

                      Florida's QB J. Brantley finished 4th (3634 yds 34 TD's 5 Int) well Stanford's QB. A. Luck finished 5th (4346 yds 41 TD's 9 Int).

I hate Jeff Sargin. how is BSU ranked #11?

I knew we were going to be #3. SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10 will always get more respect over BSU and the WAC.. It's a fact that will never change.

                              VS

                              GAME PREVIEW

For the 2nd straight year, Coach Dodge would get a chance to beat the Texas Long Horns. (Upset win in Week 1 with UNT last year). So don't think that the Longhorns have forgotten Coach Dodge.

Even though WSU enters the game with the better record (7-6 vs 6-6), Texas is still the favorite to win the game by 3 touchdowns.

                              GAME RECAP

It was a defensive battle in the 1st Quarter as neither team could get into a rhytem and both would settle for Field Goals to get on the scoreboard. Texas would finally get into the endzone on a 2 yd run by G. Gilbert and after a Tuell Int, Texas would add another FG to go into the locker room up 13-3

Washington State would open the 2nd half with the ball, but Tuell would throw another INT and Texas would take over from there, scoring 3 TD's through the air by Gilbert to take a commanding 32-3 lead into the 4th Quarter.

Both teams would struggle to put together drives in the 4th, but finally with 1:50 to play WSU would find the endzone as Tueel hit M. Wilson on a 7 yd slant. WSU would attempt to the onside kick but out of timeouts, the Longhorns would have pitty on the Cougars and run out the clock.
