        Game of the Week

        #5 Oregon 0-0 vs #4 LSU 0-0

Chris: Rejoice college football fans! It's the opening weekend of college football! Welcome to Baton Rouge for the opening weekend of the 2011 college football season. And what a way to kick off the year with a huge opening game between the new Pac-12 and the SEC. Oregon was the darling of the college football world last year with their seemingly unstoppable offense. That was until the Ducks met up with an SEC defense in the national championship against Auburn. With Oregon the new king of the Pac-12, this is a huge game for that conference to gain respect with a win over a top SEC team like LSU. But getting a win here in Death Valley is never easy. It's the "Mad Hatter" versus Chip Kelly. But before we get too far into this upcoming season, let's take a look back at some of the images of 2010...

Chris: We can only hope for another exciting season in 2011. So let's look at the preseason rankings...

        2011 Preseason Rankings

Chris: And now let's take a look at some of the favorites to win the Heisman...

        Code:
        [b][size=+2]Heisman Watch[/size][/b]

        QB Andrew Luck (Stanford)
        QB Kellen Moore (Boise State)
        HB LaMichael James (Oregon)
        QB Denard Robinson (Michigan)
        WR Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State)

Chris: So there are some other games to preview including a the big one between the hedges in Athens where the Georgia Bulldogs will host Boise State who will be looking for another early season victory over a quality AQ team. This would be huge for the Broncos if they could go into Athens and knock off the Dawgs. But Boise State is going in as the favorite. How do you guys see this one playing out?

        Gameday Predictions

        #8 Boise State 0-0 at Georgia 0-0
        Kirk: BSU Lee: UGA

Chris: And now on to the one here tonight. Can Chip Kelly's high flying offense prevail or will the Ducks fall victim to another SEC defense? Guys, the headgear is here so that means it is time to make your picks.

Kirk: For me, this one comes down to LSU QB Jordan Jefferson (86). LSU's offense was pretty anemic last year but the Tigers do have talent at receiver if Jefferson can get it to these weapons. I don't really have that much confidence Jefferson will be able to get it done but I do think LSU's offense should be better this year. Oregon does have some holes to fill in their offensive line, and their defensive front seven. But the Ducks have a very good secondary led by FS John Boyett (92) and CB Cliff Harris (90). I think this group should be good enough to stop LSU. And I only look for Oregon to have improved offensively with two potential Heisman candidates in QB Darron Thomas (94) and HB LaMichael James (97). I don't think this LSU defense will be able stop these guys and Oregon wins by double digits. Chorus of boos from the crowd.

Lee: Come on Kirk! You are forgetting about one thing. These crazy fans! Crowd goes crazy. Death Valley is no easy place to get a win and the Ducks are about to find that out. LSU should be a ton better on offense this year. I look for Jefferson to get it out to his quick, speedy receivers and this will be a close, close ball game. But can Oregon's high octane offense be stopped? Kirk, not so fast my friend! First one of the season!

Thanks. It might be possible for an OSU-BSU rematch. I think Boise State is on Oregon State's future schedule. Why the Beavers keep scheduling Boise State I'll never know.

              #5 Oregon 0-0 at #4 LSU 0-0

Baton Rouge, LA - The long awaited Oregon-LSU game was finally here and both teams seemed as amped about the start of the game as the thunderous Tiger fans. The Tigers looked a bit anxious on offense early when on 3rd down, QB Jordan Jefferson threw toward the sideline as WR Russell Shepard cut inside leading to a three-and-out. But the Ducks did not look any better when QB Darron Thomas sailed a pass out of bounds, leading to an Oregon three-and-out. Then ensuing possession was also a three-and-out for LSU when Jefferson tried to scramble up the middle on 3rd down only to be met by a swarming Duck defense. The Ducks were then also forced to punt after another three-and-out when Thomas connected with WR Blake Cantu one yard short of the 1st down marker. Finally, LSU converted the first 1st down of the game when Jefferson hit Randle along the left sideline to get the Tigers out to midfield. Then Jefferson playfaked to his sophomore HB Spencer Ware and then threw to Ware in the flat who was then able to spin out of grasp of Duck CB Cliff Harris. Ware then headed for the sideline where OLB Eddie Pleasant failed to make an openfield tackle. With only one man to beat, CB Anthony Gildon also could not bring down Ware as he took it to the house for a 50-yard touchdown! 7-0 LSU.

LSU fans were going nuts after the highlight play by Ware. Oregon took to the field and now had to deal with an even higher decibal level of noise. And then it got only louder when Thomas was sacked on 3rd down for another Duck three-and-out. LSU punt returner Reuben Randle had a nice return all the way out to the Duck 20-yard line that further ignited the crowd. But a clipping penalty would bring it back to midfield. One 2nd down, Ware exploded up the gut for 12 yards. Then followed it up with a 15-yard run. On the next play, Jefferson lofted one up over the defenders to WR Kadron Boone for a 21-yard touchdown. 14-0 LSU.

The Ducks were in trouble but with an offense like Oregon's, the Ducks were still in the game. However, HB LaMichael James could still not find any running room, and was stuffed again. On top of that, Oregon was also called for holding. And on 3rd-and-long, Thomas was nearly picked leading to yet another three-and-out for the Ducks. LSU wasted little time to strike back as Jefferson connected with with Shepard for a big 34-yard gain along the sideline. Then Ware trucked over Duck LB Eddie Pleasant to take it all the way to Oregon 6-yard line to bring the 1st quarter to an end.

But Oregon's defense showed up as a pass in the end zone on 3rd down was broken up, and LSU settled for a 23-yard chip shot. 17-0 LSU.

After a disastrous 1st quarter, Oregon's offense did not look any better to start the 2nd quarter when Thomas went deep over the middle only to picked off by LSU SS Brandon Taylor.

Though LSU was finally stopped by Oregon when Jefferson was sacked on consecutive plays to force the Tigers to punt. The Ducks attempted to get James involved. James got the handoff and attempted to hurdle a defender where he was crushed in midair by LSU CB Tharold Simon, forcing the ball loose. Fumble! Recovered by LSU FS Craig Loston who scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown. 24-0 LSU.

The Ducks could not imagine a worse start to a football game and needed to respond quickly. But only responded with another three-and-out when Thomas was sacked again on 3rd down. On the opposite side, Jefferson was able to make a play by scrambling for a crucial 1st down. Then Ware on a draw found some running room up the middle where he shoved aside LB Eddie Pleasant like a toy for 22 yards to the Duck 15-yard line. The Tigers would finish off the possession with Jefferson pitching to HB Michael Ford on an option for an easy 7-yard touchdown. 31-0 LSU.

The game of the week was now turning into one of the blowouts of the week and that is saying something since many of the games of the 1st week involved FCS teams. But Oregon finally woke up and James was able to fight for a 1st down. Then Thomas threw up a prayer toward the right sideline where WR Lavasier Tuinei was somehow able to come down with the football despite tight coverage for a huge 45-yard gain.

But the Ducks were stopped in the red zone and only managed to get into position for a 27-yard field goal. Oregon could not even execute the field goal without a false start so it then became a 32-yarder which did split up the uprights to finally get Oregon's high flying offense on the scoreboard just before halftime. 31-3 LSU at the half.

Certainly the Ducks got an earful from Chip Kelly during the break. Darron Thomas came out looking motivated to turn the game around. Thomas would immediately face heavy pressure and this time decided to scramble for an apparent 1st down. That was until LSU MLB Kevin Minter was able punch the ball out from behind for a fumble! Tigers recovered inside Duck territory.

Though Oregon appeared to have the Tigers stopped to a three-and-out. However the "Mad Hatter" Les Miles decided to go for it on 4th-and-8, and Jefferson went over the top to a wide open WR Kadron Boone for a 37-yard touchdown as Tiger Stadium went ballistic. 38-0 LSU.

It was now just an old fashioned butt-whipping. Oregon was again forced to punt and Jefferson would get his 4th touchdown pass of the night when he went deep surprisingly to FB Copeland who somehow got behind the coverage unnoticed for a cheesy 79-yard touchdown to make it 45-3 LSU.

The Ducks then went three-and-out and Jefferson finished off another drive by finding Shepard for a 21-yard touchdown to give Jordan Jefferson a school record for most touchdown passes in a single game with his 5th touchdown pass of the game. 52-10 LSU.

The embarrassing defensive performance only continued for the Ducks as FB Copeland would rumble in for a 2-yard touchdown in the closing minute of the game to end the game with a very surprising 59-10 beat down of the Ducks.

At least Oregon State has beaten BSU, something Oregon has no claim too.

With BSU leaving the WAC, and dropping Idaho as a future non-conference opponent like a hot potato, I would love to see BSU start up some sort of rivalary series were we play Oregon or Oregon State every year. It could rotate Meaning in a 4 yr span we would play each school twice, once at home and once on the road. If not the Oregon schools then maybe the Washington Schools.

I havn't heard if BYU is keeping their past scheduling agreements with BSU now that they have gone the Indy route, but I know as soon as Utah bolted for the Pac-12, they canceled all future games with the Broncos.

Well, it looks like OSU is scheduled to play Boise State in 2012 at Reser. The Beavers are crazy. They will have to play BYU, Boise, and Wisconsin next year according to scout.com. I can't believe Wisconsin is actually coming to Corvallis. I could see Oregon State and Boise playing a lot in the future because both schools suffer from being too good for their own good. Meaning that nobody wants to come play in Corvallis or Boise because there is nothing to be gained from their standpoint and there is a lot to lose.

I'll be interested to see how that new Mountain West pans out. It is kind of too bad that Utah and BYU left the conference, and next year TCU is leaving. With Boise State added to those three, the MWC would be pretty good. At least Fresno State and Nevada are jumping to the MWC right? I didn't know Boise State dropped Idaho from their future schedule. I thought that was a rivalry. After last season, maybe Nevada will become a rival for Boise State.

Fresno State,Nevada and Hawaii are all coming over the MWC next year, so yeah all 3 will become BSU chief rivals.

BSU dumped the Idaho series, because BSU fans got tired of driving up to Moscow and having the Kibbie Dome pretty much turn into a home game because we had 10,000 of the 14,000 seats filled, so it doesn't really make sense to keep that as one of our non-conference matchups unless we just schedule them as a home opener every year or maybe our homecoming opponent. (Because you know it's a easy win)

Sacramento State at Oregon State 0-0

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers kicked off the 2011 season hosting the Sacramento State Hornets on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and it still was not televised live except for a tape delay viewing on Monday. Before some the fans even had gotten to their seats, the fireworks had already started as James Rodgers fielded the opening kickoff from the 9-yard line, scooted forward, finding a seam where a Hornet defender lunged to take him down, but Rodgers was able to shove him aside while maintaining his balance. Then turned on the jets and housed the opening kickoff of the 2011 season. Touchdown Beavers! 7-0 OSU.

The Hornets then came out, were able to pick up a single 1st down on the ground, but were forced to punt. The Beavers finally got their offense on the field and put together a methodical drive that looked pretty good. QB Ryan Katz hit WR Markus Wheaton on a post over the middle for 25 yards. But inside the red zone, Katz tried to force a ball through the defense to WR James Rodgers in the end zone which winded up being intercepted.

Sacramento State QB Chris Grimes was able to scramble for a 1st down on the ensuing possession but after OSU DE Andrew Seumalo was able to sack the QB, the Hornets were again forced to punt. But after Oregon State looked good on the previous possession aside from the interception of course, the Beavers followed up with an unimpressive three-and-out. Then Sac State QB Chris Grimes on the next possession threw one up for grabs and somehow WR Jacob Ward jumped up and made the catch despite having OSU CB Brandon Hardin right on him for a 30-yard gain.

Though as the 2nd quarter opened, the Hornets were forced to punt. Finally, the OSU offense started to click as Katz threw a bullet into WR Jordan Bishop between the coverage for a gain of 19 yards. Then Katz rainbowed a deep pass to Wheaton in the back of the endzone who somehow came up with the catch despite tight coverage for a 32-yard touchdown. 14-0 OSU.

The Hornets were clearly outmatched but they kept playing and Grimes connected with his TE for a big 38-yard gain. And then Grimes went to WR Jacob Ward deep down the right sideline in single coverage with OSU CB Brandon Hardin. Ward was able to come away with the ball and took it in for a Hornet touchdown on the 38-yard play through the air. 14-7 OSU.

OSU took over and went to the ground game. HB Ryan McCants was able to break one outside where he was finally pushed out of bounds at the Hornet 25-yard line on a 44-yard scamper. McCants would finish off the possession by pounding his way into the end zone from one yard out. 21-7 OSU.

The Hornets then put together a pretty good drive until Grimes threw toward the right sideline only to have OSU OLB Cameron Collins climb the ladder for an interception.

The Beavers would take advantage of the great field position off of the turnover as Katz rifled it to Rodgers in the back of the end zone who was able to tap his toes on the turf to keep both feet in for an 8-yard touchdown reception. 28-7 OSU.

After a Hornet punt, the Beavers took over with little time. With only a few seconds on the clock, Katz bombed it deep on a hail mary and surprisingly both Wheaton and Bishop were wide open as could be. Both converged on the ball but Wheaton was the one that came away with the football for a 55-yard touchdown off the hail mary to end the 1st half with Oregon State up 35-7.

Sacramento State had hung strong in the 1st quarter but the Beavers had pulled away in the 2nd quarter. Now it was turning into the route that a game like this should be. After another Hornet punt, Katz stepped up in the pocket and connected with Rodgers over the middle who raced down the field for a 64-yard touchdown. 42-7 OSU.

OSU MLB Rueben Robinson was able to end Sacramento State's next possession when he blitzed in to sack Grimes on 3rd down, forcing the Hornets to punt again. James Rodgers fielded the ensuing punt at the OSU 26-yard line, got some blocks, slipped out of a tackle, and headed toward the right sideline. Just when it looked like Rodgers would be taken down near midfield, he stopped on a dime, and spun past the defender. Then raced down the sideline and took it to the house with a 74-yard punt return to give Rodgers his 4th touchdown of the game. 49-7 OSU.

In the 4th quarter, Mike Riley pulled all the starters but backup QB Cody Vaz was still able to keep the Beavers scoring when he connected with HB Jordan Jenkins on a perfectly executed screen that went for a 25-yard touchdown. 56-7 OSU.

The Hornets were able to put together a nice 5-play, 85-yard drive finished with a 1-yard touchdown run by the RB to make it a 56-14 final. James Rodgers was named NCAA Offensive Player of the Week after amassing 288 total yards and scoring four touchdowns. After an easy cupcake win over Sacramento State, the difficulty level will be going way up with the Beavers having to travel to Madison to play Wisconsin next Saturday.

Congrats on the Week 1 win even if it was just against Sacremento State.

Happy to see Kellen have a decent day in the big win over Georgia. Hope that happens in real life too.

Moore had a great game against UGA. He should stay a Heisman contender but I can't see how LaMichael James is still in consideration after the awful game he had against LSU.

                                Game of the Week

                                #3 Alabama 1-0 (0-0) at Penn State 1-0 (0-0)

Chris: Welcome to State College, the home of the Penn State Nittany Lions where many of these fans have been camping out in Paternoville all week for this one tonight against #3 Alabama. Crowd goes crazy. Well, we had a surprising outcome to the opening weekend of college football as the Oregon Ducks were just dismantled by LSU, and the Bayou Bengals have shot up to the #2 spot in the polls after a the statement win. We hope for this one to be a little bit more competitive. Maybe the Big Ten will fare better than the Pac-12 did against an elite SEC team in the Crimson Tide.

We've got a few good matchups slated for today. The defending national champion Auburn Tigers will get their first test today when they host Mississippi State. And of course later tonight Notre Dame and Michigan will face off...

                                #19 Mississippi State 1-0 (0-0) at #11 Auburn 1-0 (0-0)

                                #23 Missouri 1-0 (0-0) at #25 Arizona State 1-0 (0-0)
                                Kirk: ASU Lee: ASU

                                #21 Notre Dame 1-0 (0-0) at Michigan 1-0 (0-0)
                                Kirk: Mich Lee: ND

Chris: That one in Ann Arbor should be intersting. Alright guys, and now on to the one here in Happy Valley. Last year the Nittany Lions were dominated by the Tide down in Tuscaloosa. But will the outcome be different here in Beaver Stadium?

Kirk: Penn State might be unranked and big underdogs here. But the Nittany Lions are a good football team and should move into the rankings at some point in the season. But this Alabama team is just too talented. If PSU is going to have any chance whatsoever today, then they will need to find away to stop Bama's junior HB Trent Richardson (95) who is just absolute beast. He run through you. He can run around and he can run faster than you. But if the Nittany Lions can contain him. There is no stopping him but if they can contain him. And force Bama third-year junior QB AJ McCarron (86) to beat them through the air, they might be able to keep it close. But even then, they will need to find a way to score against this scary Bama defense. I have to go with the Tide. Crowd boos the pick.

Lee: Uh huh. Alabama has three NFL caliber LBs in Nico Johnson, Donta Hightower, and Courtney Upshaw. And you're right Kirk. These guys are mean, scary guys. And the rest of their defense is pretty good too, boy. But the Nittany Lions have some talent too. PSU senior WR Derek Moye (92) is 6'5" and a terrific receiver. If I was QB Matt McGloin (85) I would look for him all day long. You can't miss him. And sophomore HB Silas Redd (85) is a good looking tailback. But it's not going to matter. Much closer than the experts think but no chance!
