Re: Let it Rage: An Oregon State Dynasty

    Oregon State 1-0 (0-0) at #10 Wisconsin 1-0 (0-0)

Madison, WI - Camp Randall was excited for the first meaningful game for both #10 Wisconsin and Oregon State. This would be the marquee non-conference game for both teams. Oregon State was looking to finally win a big game out east. The last time the Beavers played a Big Ten opponent, the results were not pretty as the Beavers were demolished by Penn State at Beaver Stadium. Badger fans would love to see a similar conclusion to today's game.

The Beavers looked poised to play a good game from the very first play from scrimmage. QB Ryan Katz connected with WR Jordan Bishop between the zone for a quick 25 yards right out of the opening gate to immediately quiet the fans. Then Katz hit WR Markus Wheaton on a deep post for a gain of 22 yards. And HB Ryan McCants busted up the gut for 10 yards to give the Beavers their third 1st down on three total plays. The Beavers would face a 3rd down. Katz was pressured into rolling outside, where a defensive lineman was there to bring him down, but the OSU QB was able to miraculously escape his grasp. And scrambled to the 5-yard line for another 1st down. On the very next play, Katz could not find anybody open again so he took it in himself for a 5-yard touchdown run as the Beavers celebrated in the end zone to the dismay of Camp Randall. 7-0 OSU.

Wisconsin came out but was unable to gain any momentum when the FB was stuffed on 3rd-and-1 for no gain, forcing the Badgers to punt after a three-and-out. Badger fans were shocked and quite silent. But OSU would not find the same success as the first possession, as this time the Beavers would also go three-and-out. The game really slowed down as both defenses dug in. Both Wisconsin and OSU traded punts again after consecutive three-and-outs. Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson broke the monotony by hitting WR Jared Abberderis across the middle for a gain of 16 yards to give the Badgers their first 1st down of the game. Then Wilson on 3rd down hit TE Jake Byrne on an out route who took it down the sideline. Finally, he was pushed out of bounds at the OSU 43-yard line for a 31 yard gain. However, after a decent run by HB James White, the Badgers were called for holding so it became 1st-and-20. Wilson tried to get it all back at once, going deep to WR Nick Toon, but only to be picked off by OSU CB Brandon Hardin who then returned it to the Wisconsin 49-yard line.

With the turnover, the Beavers were now in business to increase their lead. Katz on 2nd down hit WR James Rodgers in on a crossing pattern who took it for a 24-yard gain to the 19-yard line when the 1st quarter came to an end. Upset alert in Madison.

As the 2nd quarter opened, Katz hit WR Jordan Bishop in tight coverage at the 3-yard line. Though HB Ryan McCants was stuffed on the next play. And then Katz was sacked. With a long 3rd-and-goal, the Beavs tried a bubble screen to Rodgers, but the ball sailed hit the turf. As a result, the Beavers settled for a 33-yard field goal. 10-0 OSU.

The Badgers appeared likely to go three-and-out until QB Russell Wilson was able to escape pressure and scrambled up the middle for a 10 yard gain to keep Wisconsin alive. Then on 3rd-and-short, Wilsoon dumped it off to FB Ewing in the flat who broke a tackle along the sideline for another 1st down. WR Jeff Ducworth then came in motion and got the handoff on a jet sweep. And found running room to pick up 11 yards to the OSU 26-yard line. Later, HB James White picked up another 1st down on run up the middle to get the Badgers to the 3-yard line. Finally, HB Montee Ball was able to get the Badgers on the scoreboard by following his offensive line into the end zone on a 3-yard scamper to cap off a 12-play, 69-yard drive. 10-7.

Now the crowd noise was back, and it seemed to effect the Beavers as they had their ugliest three-and-out thus far. The Badgers got the ball back at their own 23-yard line with 1:43 remaining in the half. Wilson connected with Duckworth for 21 yards. Then on a 2nd down play, Wislon floated one up over the middle perfectly to WR Nick Toon for a 20 yard gain out to the OSU 35-yard line. On 3rd-and-five, Wilson was able dump it to White on a screen that went for another 1st down. The Badgers suddenly appeared unstoppable until OSU OLB Cameron Collins was able to come up with a big sack. Though Wilson was then able to find WR Jared Abberderis open along the sideline for a 24-yard connection inside the 10-yard line. It would all come down to 3rd-and-goal but Wilson was sacked by OSU DT Ben Motter with :01 left on the clock. Bret Bielema was able to signal a timeout and the Badgers were able to tie the game just before the break with a 34-yard field goal. 10-10

The Badgers appeared poised to continue where they left off to start the 3rd quarter as HB James White ran for a quick 1st down. But Wisconsin was called for holding which would eventually result in a three-and-out. Oregon State seemed to have hit a wall offensively as Katz was sacked, and the Beavers were forced to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing possession, Wilson bombed it deep into double coverage. OSU safety Josh LaGrone had a chance at the interception but dropped the football. And WR Jared Abberderis was able to catch it off the deflection for a huge 52-yard gain all the way to the OSU 15-yard line as Camp Randall roared to life.

The Badgers then pounded it on the ground for a 1st down with FB Ewing to pick a 3rd-and-short. On the next play, Wilson found Duckworth over the middle for a touchdown! But wait. A flag was down. Roughing the passer on the defense. Penalty was declined. 17-10 Wisconsin.

Oregon State now trailed for the first time in the game. The Beavers needed a play on 3rd down and that is just what they got when Katz connected with a strike to Rodgers on a curl for 14 yards. Then Katz was able to pick up a 3rd-and-9 with a big 19-yard scramble to the Wisconsin 42-yard line. The Beavers would face a 3rd-and-3 and Katz rocketed the football to Rodgers over the middle for a 21-yard gain to the Wisconsin 14-yard line. Then Katz was given enough time in the pocket to hit J-Rod over the middle on a slant for a 12-yard touchdown, capping off a 10-play, 76-yard drive to tie it up 17-17.

The Badgers would find themselves backup on their own 9-yard line after being called for holding on the ensuing kickoff. Though with his back to his own end zoen, Wilson let it fly to TE Jake Byrne for a quick 30 yards to close the 3rd quarter with both team knotted up.

Wisconsin faced a 3rd-and-3 but Wilson was able to convert by connecting with WR Jared Abberderis for 12 yards. And now HB James White was starting to find open space in running game. But the drive would stall when on a 3rd down play, Wilson dumped it off to White in the flat who was immediately brought down by OSU OLB Cameron Collins in the backfield for a loss. Setting up a 47-yard field goal. The kick started wide right of the goal post, but hooked back in to split the uprights to put the Badgers back on top 20-17 with just 5:50 remaining.

On the ensuing possession for OSU, Katz stepped up in the pocket and launched it deep down the left sideline where he had WR Markus Wheaton who was open. But Wheaton could not make the grab as the pass was a bit underthrown and Wheaton was hit has he tried to bring it in. And on the next play, Katz again went deep. This time over the middle of the field to TE Joe Halahuni but Badger FS Aaron Henry caught up to the pass and made a basket catch for the interception. But there was a flag down all the way back at the line of scrimmage. "Roughing the passer on defense," announced the referee. "Fifteen-yard penalty. Automatic first down!" After hearing about the penalty and then seeing a replay on the jumboscreen, Badger fans went ballistic with a roar of boos to let the officials have it. The replay showed that Katz was just barely touched after the pass.

As a result of the penalty, the Beavers were given another chance. And again, Katz went deep over the middle. However, this time Rodgers had gotten behind the coverage. J-Rod caught the ball in stride and was able to take it the distance, taking it to the farm for a 55-yard touchdown to put the Beavers in front 24-20 with still 4:53 left to go.

Now all of the pressure was was on Wisconsin to hold off the Beavers' upset bid. The Badgers were able to just barely keep their drive alive when HB James White was able to pick up a 3rd-and-2 with a tough run up the middle. On the next play, Wilson bombed it to WR Nick Toon who was in double coverage. Both safety Lance Mithcell and CB Brandon Hardin deflected the ball, but Toon was also able to catch the ball off the deflection to the amazement of the OSU secondary for a huge gain. The Beavers were also called for a late roughing hit on Wilson on the play. (Which is why there is no picture. Since roughing the passer seems to be the only 15-yard penalty called. I will probably start referring to some of these penalties as regular personal fouls and pass interference from now on.) After the huge play through the air, the Badgers were now inside the 10-yard line of the Beavers. On 2nd down, White took the handoff and followed his pancaking offensive line, walking into the end zone on a 5-yard run to regain the lead for the Badgers. 27-24 Wisconsin.

After being called for holding on the ensuing kickoff, the Beavers took over at their own 20-yard line with still 3:28 remaining. Katz was able to hit Rodgers for a 1st down on a curl for what became a 19-yard gain. However, Rodgers was forced to leave the game with an apparent hurt back. But HB Jordan Jenkins was able to pick up another 1st down with a run up the middle. And fortunately, Rodgers trotted back onto the field for the Beavers. On 2nd-and-10, Katz was able to get the ball out quickly to HB Ryan McCants for a short gain. But OSU was again called for holding that would make it 2nd-and-20. Though on the next play, the Badgers jumped too early, and were called for offsides. So it was now 2nd-and-15. Katz was able to throw a strike to WR Jordan Bishop who came up with a clutch catch over the middle in tight coverage. Unfortunately, Bishop came up one yard short on the 14-yard reception. It was now 3rd-and-inches at the Badger 38-yard line. McCants took the handoff, and bulled forward to pick up the 1st down. Then Katz connected with Wheaton on a slant for a 14-yard gain who was tackled just shy of the 20-yard line. Next, Katz hooked up with Bishop for five yards over the middle. Katz was then pressured into scrambling up the middle, but was tackled before he had gotten going for only one yard. Mike Riley was forced to call a timeout.

With just :13 left in regulation, the Beavers faced 3rd-and-4 at the Badger 15-yard line. The Beavers set up for a huge play of the game and the roar of Camp Randall reached its highest level of the game, leading to a false start on Oregon State. Now it was 3rd-and-9. Katz dropped back to pass. The Beavers set up a screen but McCants was covered so Katz wisely threw the ball away out of bounds. So with just :09 left to go in regulation, out came Johnny Hekker, the punter/kicker for the Beavers to attempt a game-tying field goal. Just as the Beavers were prepared to attempt the kick. Timeout was called by Bret Bielema. The head coach for Wisconsin was going to attempt to ice the kicker. The Badgers went through all three of the their timeouts. Finally, OSU was able snap the ball and...

Wide left! Badger fans went insane. Hekker walked off the field as his teammates tried to console their kicker who they all knew just cost them a chance at winning the game. The Badgers came out and knelt in the victory formation. Wisconsin dodged a bullet by narrowly holding off the Beavers from pulling off the upset. For Oregon State, it is another heart-breaking loss in a non-conference game that has become all too familiar to for Beaver fans.

Tough loss. Looks like your lack of a run game hurt you, but Katz kept you in it. You are correct OSU not being able to win the big non-conference game has been a killer to their quest in becoming a Top-25 team.

        For sure.

I should also let you know that when I kick field goals, I supersim (watch) them so that way my team will miss them occasionally, giving me a sense of suspense whenever I kick them. If I did the kicking, it would almost always be a guaranteed three points unless it was out of range.

Ouch tough loss there. Incredible ending to a great game.

I think its great that you use supersim for the kicks. That suspense is essential to have in late game scenarios.

Keep up the good work. Good luck recovering next week!

            #3 Alabama 1-0 (0-0) at Penn State 1-0 (0-0)

State College, PA - PSU QB Matt McGloin opened the game from scrimmage connecting with WR Derek Moye on a 15-yard post. Then McGloin went right back to Moye over the middle on a 3rd-and-12 for a clutch 1st down. Though the drive would stall in Bama territory. However, Joe Paterno kept the offense on the field on 4th-and-short at the Bama 34-yard line. And the gamble paid off as PSU HB Silas Redd squeezed through a tiny hole to pick up the 1st down to keep the opening drive alive. A couple plays later, McGloin threw to Moye on a screen that caught the Crimson Tide in a blitz, allowing Moye to go for a 32-yard touchdown. 7-0 PSU.

Alabama did not look as sharp on their opening possession when QB AJ McCarron's opening pass was dropped. Despite the drop, McCarron was able to keep the chains moving. Surprisingly, the Tide did not run the ball once on their opening drive. All was going well until McCarron was sacked in the red zone by PSU DE Jack Crawford. On 3rd-and-17, McCarron was forced to go deep over the middle into the end zone when it was picked off by PSU FS Nick Sukay.

The Nittany Lions appeared headed for a three-and-out until McGloin connected with WR Justin Brown for a gain of 23 yards. Penn State made it out to midfield where Paterno again kept the offense on the field on 4th down. However, this time, on 4th-and-1, Redd got the ball on a toss to the left, but was caught in the backfield by Bama SS Mark Barron (93).
So the Tide took over with great field position and this time HB Trent Richardson was getting involved. However another sack in the red zone would force Nick Saban to settle for a 28-yard chip shot to open the 2nd quarter. 7-3 PSU.

Holding against Penn State on ensuing kickoff would back up the Nittany Lions to their own 14-yard line. However, Redd stiff-armed his way to another PSU 1st down on a 10-yard run. McGloin then connected with Moye along the left sideline who broke a tackle, took it down the sideline until he was finally brought down at the Bama 43 for a 30-yard gain. Later, Redd would break loose for a 29-yard touchdown scamper to make it 14-3 PSU. Somebody hit the upset alert button in Happy Valley.

Alabama looked dazed and confused. And now Beaver Stadium was rocking, leading to a Bama three-and-out. Though Penn State did the same on their next possession. Then Alabama seemed to finally wake up and put together a long, methodical drive helped out by some strong running by Richardson. But the drive would come up short in the red zone again when McCarron was taken down in the backfield on the QB keeper, resulting in a 24-yard field goal. 14-6 PSU.

With just under two minutes to go in the half, McGlolin chucked it deep down the right sideline to WR Devon Smith who was covered by Bama CB Dre Kirkpatrick. Somehow Smith was able fight for the football and make an amazing catch while getting a foot in bounds for a huge 42-yard gain at the Bama 24-yard line.

The Nittany Lions were knocking on the door again until McGloin threw to the end zone, testing Kirkpatrick (91) again. This time Kirkpatrick made him regret the decision with an over the shoulder interception. Though Alabama would still trail at halftime.

Alabama was able to barely avoid another three-and-out to open the 3rd quarter when McCarron threw a strike to WR Darius Hanks on 3rd-and-5 over the middle. Hanks was lit up over the middle but managed hang on to the ball. However, Bama's drive would come to an end when a pass intended for Hanks, was broken up by PSU CB D'anton Lynn. Though Nick Saban called a fake punt which backfired when the pass was incomplete over the middle of the field.

As a result, PSU took over with good field position at midfield. McGloin was able to frustrate Bama's defense by not being affected by the pressure and moving the chains with some clutch passing. Though Penn State would only be able to tack on a 42-yard field goal to go ahead 17-6.

Alabama's next possession would be ended again prematurely by PSU CB D'anton Lynn when broke up a 3rd down pass intended for WR Marquis Maze. However, Penn State would turnover the ball on downs at the Bama 38-yard line when a McGloin pass over the middle was nearly picked off on a 4th-and-4 play. But the Crimson Tide continued to struggle on offense, going three-and-out.

Defense continued to dominate as the game moved into the 4th quarter with still Penn State in full command. Penn State would go three-and-out. And then a McCarron sack would force another Bama three-and-out. Finally, the monotany was broken when McGloin connected deep with WR Justin Brown for a 37-yard gain to the Bama 9-yard line.

But on 3rd-and-goal, McGloin's pass into the end zone was broken up by Bama CB Dee Millner, forcing Penn State to settle for a 24-yarder to increase their lead to 20-6.

Alabama's malaise continued as they would go three-and-out yet again. Penn State also was struggling to get anything going other than the big plays through the air, and would also go three-and-out. The game now seemed all but over with Alabama facing yet another three-and-out with a 3rd-and-17 facing them on their own side of the field. That is when McCarron connected with Hanks over the middle, who slipped a tackle and was off to the races for a 62-yard touchdown. Just like that, Alabama was back in the game but time was running out. 20-13 PSU with just 1:14 remaining.

The Tide absolutely needed to recover the onside kick to have any chance. Alabama lined up and the ball was kicked into the turf where both sides scrambled for the ball and Alabama recovered the football! Beaver Stadium suddenly went quiet.

The noise level then amped up but McCarron looked poised to tie the game when he found Norwood over the middle for a gain of 29 yards. However, the drive then stalled, and the game would come down to a 4th-and-10 play at the PSU 34-yard line. McCarron dropped back to pass, had an eternity in the pocket, but could not find anybody open. Finally, McCarron got ready to launch it deep. Just as the ball was about to come out, McCarron was drilled in the back as the ball was flung down to the turf for an incomplete pass. Beaver Stadium roared as Penn State just pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year.

                Game of the Week

                #1 Oklahoma 1-0 (0-0) at #8 Florida State 2-0 (0-0)

Chris: We've got another great early non-conference game tonight. Welcome to Tallahassee where Florida State will host the #1 Oklahoma Sooners. This will be our first chance to check out the Sooners and see for ourselves just how good Oklahoma will be this year. But the real story today is the job that Jimbo Fisher has done with the Seminoles. Florida State is nationally relevant again. At least for now. After all the Seminoles are pretty big underdogs today according to the pundits. Of course, this season has been anything but predictable thus far.

                Gameday Predictions

                #2 LSU 2-0 (0-0) at #22 Mississippi State 1-1 (0-1)
                Kirk: MSU Lee: LSU

Lee: And now on to the showdown here in Tallahassee. Does Florida State have what it takes to pull off the upset over the #1 team in the land?

Kirk: These are both very good teams. But Oklahoma is an elite team. There are very few weaknesses on this Sooner team. I look for OU QB Landry Jones (94) to have a big game through the air tonight. Florida State's secondary is going to have their work cut out trying to cover this talented corps of OU receivers like WR Ryan Broyles (96) and sophomore WR Kenny Still (93). The 'Noles are going to have to get some pressure to force Jones to make some bad passes. If Jones is given all day in the pocket, it will be a long day for Florida State. The Sooners run away with this one. Crowd boos the pick.

Lee: Hey now Kirk! Florida State has a chance. This FSU offense is pretty good too. FSU QB EJ Manuel should have a good game if the Seminoles can protect him. And I think these receivers can get open against Oklahoma's secondary if Manuel can find them. But you're right, the 'Noles are going to need to find a way to get some pressure on Jones. FSU DE Brandon Jenkin (94) needs to have an impact tonight. Lee starts doing the warchant and tomahawk chop Ehhh! Forget about it! Not so fast!

                  #1 Oklahoma 1-0 (0-0) at #8 Florida State 2-0 (0-0)

Tallahassee, FL - Oklahoma certainly looked like the #1 team in the country on their opening possession, putting on an offensive clinic with HB Roy Finch punching it in from two yards out to give the Sooners the early lead. 7-0 OU.

On the opposite side for Florida State, QB EJ Manuel was sacked on his first play from scrimmage by OU DE David King which would eventually lead to a three-and-out. On the ensuing possession for the Sooners, the Seminole defense had Oklahoma backed up on their own 13-yard line with a 3rd-and-20 facing them after an option pitch by QB Landry Jones sailed out of bounds for a loss. Jones dropped back to pass, stepped up in the pocket, and lasered deep down the middle of the field to WR DeJuan Miller who had gotten behind the coverage. Miller made the catch with nothing but green in front of him and raced into the end zone for an 87-yard touchdown. 14-0 OU.

The Seminoles were in trouble but fortunately Manuel was able to lead a decent drive that came up short in the red zone, leading to a 22-yard field goal to get Florida State on the scoreboard, but still trailed 14-3.

In the 2nd quarter, the Sooners faced a 4th-and-7 at the FSU 39-yard line. Bob Stoops decided to go for it and Jones went deep to WR Kenny Stills but FSU CB Xavier Rhodes was there to break it up. Finally, the 'Noles had stopped Oklahoma's offense. However, Florida State would face a similar situation on the opposite end of the field. This time it was Jimbo Fisher going for it on 4th-and-1 at the OU 39-yard line. FSU WR Bert Reed motioned in and received the handoff from Manuel on the fly sweep, but was tackled in the backfield. Oklahoma took advantage of the good field position and marched right back down into the red zone, but the drive stalled at the 2-yard line. Stoops decided to go for the touchdown and 4th-and-goal. Jones dropped back to pass, faced pressure up the middle, let it go early into the end zone only to picked off by FSU SS Nick Moody as Doak Campbell roared with delight.

However, Florida State would go three-and-out, and the Sooners took over inside FSU territory. It was not long before Oklahoma was back in the red zone. This time QB Landry Jones found WR Ryan Broyles in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown to increase the Sooner lead to 21-3 just before halftime.

FSU QB EJ Manuel was able to lead a good drive to open the 3rd quarter but a 3rd down pass in the red zone toward the corner of the end zone was nearly picked off, forcing the Seminoles to again settle for a short field goal. The 31-yarder split the uprights. 21-6 OU.

Oklahoma on the ensuing possession would get in position to attempt a long 48-yard field goal but the kick hooked wide right. As a result, Florida State took over with decent field position and poised to get back into the game until Manuel was nailed in the picked by OU DT Jamarkus McFarland resulting in a fumble which the Sooners would recover. The sack by McFarland was just one of 3.5 that he would have when the night was finished.

However, the Sooners could not take advantage of the opportunity from the turnover. When Landry Jones' deep pass was broken up, Oklahoma had to punt the ball away after a three-and-out.

For Florida State, HB Chris Thompson was able to explode up the middle for a 16 yard gain which was probably thus far the most exciting play of the game for the fans wearing garnet and gold. Everything was looking good for the 'Noles until Manuel was sacked on 3rd down by OU DT Stacy McGee. As a result, Florida State was forced to try a 46-yard field goal which was clanked off the left upright.

Defense continued to be the name of the game in the 3rd quarter as Oklahoma was stopped to another three-and out. Then on the ensuing possession for Florida State, QB EJ Manuel threw up a prayer deep into the corner of the end zone to WR Bert Reed who turned around right in front of the pylon, and somehow made the catch with the OU safety draped all over him. Reed was drilled down, falling down on the pylon, but managed to hold onto the football for a 39-yard touchdown reception. Doak Campbell roared the tremendous play, and suddenly Florida State was only down 21-13. We had a game again.

But the Sooners struck back quickly in the 4th quarter when Landry Jones let it fly over the top. WR Kenny Stills made the catch and was gone for a 75-yard touchdown just like that. 28-13 OU.

The theme continued when Florida State took over on offense as it was bombs away. QB EJ Manuel would connect on another deep pass to WR Bert Reed for a huge 49-yard gain.

However, just when it looked like Florida State might be able to get another touchdown, at the OU 20-yard line, Manuel was sacked by OU DT JaMarkus McFarland for the seventh Sooner sack of the game. Again, the Seminoles would trot out the field goal unit and tack on a 45-yarder to make it 28-16 OU.

Florida State still had a chance but it became apparent that FSU had no answer to stop Oklahoma's offense as the Sooners went to the ground game. HB Roy Finch would have to take a breather and in came the true freshman HB Brandon Williams who got the handoff at the FSU 39-yard line. Williams took advantage of some great blocking and a tired FSU defense, cutting outside, and breaking arm tackles on his way down the sideline for a 39-yard touchdown scamper to put Oklahoma decisively in front 35-16.

Knowing that Florida State needed to make plays through the air, the OU defensive line was coming after Manuel, and recorded their 8th sack of the game to force another Seminole punt which was Jimbo Fisher pretty much waving the white flag. Maybe Florida State had given up too early because Stoops did not call off the dogs as HB Roy Finch took it right up the gut untouched 56 yards to house, hammering the final nail in the coffin. 42-16 OU.

The game would end in a fitting manner with FSU QB EJ Manuel sacked for the 10th time of the game. The Sooners have proven they are the real deal.

Chris: Welcome to College Station, the home of the 12th man...Crowd screams and yells....where Texas A&M will host Oklahoma State in a Big XII South showdown between top five teams.

Kirk: Umm...Chris, there is no Big XII South.

                      Chris: Oh, that's right.

Lee: Pretty soon there ain't gonna be a Big XII either.

Chris: Ha ha. It's probably a bit premature to talk about the demise of the Big XII. Though most of the talk around this conference recently has been about Texas A&M bolting for the SEC, and the fight that is likely to ensue for Oklahoma. But meanwhile guys, this is a pretty good little conference. Of course Texas was embarrassed for the 2nd year in a row by UCLA. Crowd goes crazy. Of course, these fans here like that. Not only is Oklahoma the #1 team in the land, but these two teams that will play here today are also in the top five. And there is also undefeated Missouri who has played pretty well even though it is early and not against the greatest of competiton. But the Tigers will get a major test tonight when Oklahoma kicks off conference play hosting Missouri down in Norman for another great matchup here in the Big XII. So as you can see, the Big XII takes center stage today.

                      Gameday Predictions

                      #18 Missouri 3-0 (0-0) at #1 Oklahoma 2-0 (0-0)
                      Kirk: OU Lee: OU

Chris: So before we dive into this showdown here. We understand Erin Andrews has an injury report for us. Take it away E.A.

Erin: The only injury of note is that Oklahoma State will still be without their starting LT Nick Martinez (90) who is rehabbing a broken ankle, and as a result the Cowboys will still have to go with sophomore Javius Townsend (80). Oklahoma State is hoping to have Martinez back in three weeks. Guys, back over to you.

Chris: Thanks, Erin. And now onto the showdown here in College Station. Both of these programs could really use a marquee win. A win for OSU will potentially set up a huge Bedlam game with Oklahoma. Of course, there is a lot on the line for the Aggies too. Regardless, a win for either team sets them up for a national title run. Of course it is still way early. Guys, time for your picks.

Kirk: The matchup I will be looking closely at is Texas A&M CB Terrence Frederick (86) trying to cover super-star OSU WR Justin Blackmon (96). I find it hard to believe that A&M will be able to contain Blackmon and the other potent receivers on this Cowboy offense. And even without their starting LT Martinez, I will be surprised if the Aggies can get any pressure on OSU QB Brandon Weeden (95). I look for the Pokes to win a barnburner today. Crowd boos.

Lee: No way Kirk! Not so fast my friend! Oklahoma State almost lost to Tulsa last week and just barely escaped losing to Arizona. The Cowboys have a huge problem! They can't play defense. This is not an impressive Cowboy front seven at all. And look out! Texas A&M has a terrific tailback duo in HB Cyrus Gray (91) and HB Christine Michael (92). And A&M's QB Ryan Tannehill (92) has been fantastic sweethear! He's got seven touchdowns and no interceptions. The Aggies are going to control the clock with long drives behind those two tailbacks. Close, close game but A&M finds a way to get it done.

Thanks, I was working on sliders and trying to find a way around the ease of the deep ball in end of half situations especially in the CPU vs CPU games. I finally found an answer but it requires me to call all of the defensive plays and making sure they stay out of the aggressive zone covreages in their gameplan. Hopefully, EA fixes this in a patch or tuner so I can just enjoy watching those games again.

                            #3 Oklahoma State 3-0 (0-0) at #5 Texas A&M 2-0 (0-0)

College Station, TX - Kyle Field was full of energy at kickoff but on the first play from scrimmage, Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill (92) was sacked, dampering some of the initial enthusiasm. Despite the sack, the Aggies were able to march down to the OSU 29-yard line where head coach Mike Sherman went for it on 4th-and-inches. Though the pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage, and A&M had turned over the ball on downs.

The Cowboys wasted little time moving down the field into the red zone mainly behind the arm of QB Brandon Weeden (95). At the 5-yard line, Weeden tossed one up to WR Tracy Moore in the end zone who lept up and made the catch for a touchdown. 7-0 OSU.

Texas A&M would face an early setback when on the ensuing kickoff return, HB Cyrus Gray (91) was hurt, and left the field with a strained pectoral. Momentum was clearly not with the Aggies as they would go three-and-out. Oklahoma State took over and Weeden pitched the football on a speed option to HB Joseph Randle. Who broke through an arm tackle, spun past another defender, and raced down the sideline for what was ruled a 69-yard touchdown reception. 14-0 OSU.

Mike Sherman on the next possession, would again gamble on 4th down. This time it was 4th-and-2 at the OSU 36-yard line where Tannehill dropped back to pass, threw over the middle, and was picked off by OSU FS Johnny Thomas.

The Cowboys continued to look unstoppable in the 2nd quarter when QB Brandon Weeden connected with WR Josh Cooper for a 4-yard touchdown to put OSU in front 21-0.

The Aggies finally got a break when HB Cyrus Gray was back on the field, but it would not help Texas A&M as they would go three-and-out. The 12th Man finally got back to being a factor on the ensuing possession, when the Cowboys were on the verge of going three-and-out, the crowd noise amped up. However, Weeden deep to superstar WR Justin Blackmon (96) who made the catch in man coverage, then slipped out of a tackle, raced down the sideline, where he was finally pushed out of bounds at the A&M 21-yard line, silencing the crowd.

However, on 3rd down in the red zone, Weeden was sacked by A&M OLB Sean Porter, forcing OSU kick a 29-yard chip shot. 24-0 OSU.

The red zone stop seemed to light a fire. Aggie QB Ryan Tannehill dumped it off to HB Cyrus Gray on a screen that went for a 33-yard gain to get and A&M drive off to a great start. Tannehill would lead A&M into the red zone where he would hook up with WR Ryan Swope on a slant for a 15-yard touchdown to finally get the Aggies on the scoreboard. Then Mike Sherman decided to keep the offense on the field and go for two and Tannehill scrambled into the end zone to make it 24-8 OSU.

The pendulum now seemed to be swinging back in favor of Texas A&M. Kyle Field was electric and OSU would go three-and-out. However, A&M followed with a punt. On the ensuing possession for OSU, WR Justin Blackmon made a catch over the middle but suffered the consequences, leaving the game with back spasms. Blackmon would not return but it should not be anything serious. Despite the setback, the Cowboys were able to get into position for a long 56-yard field goal which was missed wide right. Texas A&M had a chance to maybe score before the break, but would go three-and-out. OSU ran the clock out and took their 24-8 lead into halftime.

If Texas A&M wanted to have any chance to make comeback, the Aggies would need to find a way to stop Weeden who already had 309 passing yards at halftime. The Cowboys would find themselves at the midfield would 4th-and-inches facing them. Head coach Mike Gundy kept the offense on the field. Weeden's pass to WR Josh Cooper was broken up, but Cooper was alert enough to catch the ball off the deflection to keep the drive alive for the Cowboys. Kyle Field let out a collective groan. However, the Aggies held strong and later faced OSU to punt. Though A&M would respond with a three-and-out.

Texas A&M aggression would finally pay off when Weeden fumbled the football in the pocket which the Aggies recovered to give Texas A&M great field position. Aggie QB Ryan Tannehill the connected with WR Jeff Fuller a couple times to get Texas A&M into the red zone. Where HB Cyrus Gray exploded for a 10-yard touchdown scamper. 24-15 OSU.

Then disaster occurred for the Cowboys when Weeden was picked off by A&M CB Lionel Smith. And HB Cyrus Gray would later capitalize off the turnover by punching it into the end zone from three yards out to suddenly make it 24-22 OSU.

OSU QB Brandon Weeden dusted off his mistake and decided to test the A&M secondary again, throwing up a prayer into double coverage. Somehow WR Tracy Moore climbed the ladder and made the catch over the two A&M defenders for a huge 56-yard reception inside the A&M 5-yard line..

On the very next play, Weeden was given an eternity in the pocket, threw into the end zone where it was picked off by A&M CB Coryell Judie who took it the other way down the sideline all the way back for a 100-yard pick-six, bringing Kyle Field to frenzy as the the Aggies had now taken a 28-24 lead! Gray would be stopped on a 2-point conversion attempt, but the damage was done.

Oklahoma State was in shock, having given up a 24-0 lead, and would then go three-and-out. However, A&M also would go three-and-out. Texas A&M's deffense was really feeling it now as they applied pressure, sacking Weeden twice to force another three-and-out. Texas A&M would take their lead into the 4th quarter.

The Aggies appeared to suddenly be in control until Tannehill made a bad decision, throwing toward the sideline only to be intercepted by OSU CB Justin Gilbert who raced down the sideline to take it all the way for a touchdown to put the Cowboys back in front just like that. 31-28 OSU.

However, Texas A&M countered right back, marching down the field where HB Cyrus Gray took a 3-yard toss to the right into the end zone for his 3rd touchdown of the game to put the Aggies back on top 35-31.

Oklahoma State countered with a quick three-and-out. The Aggies looked like they were in position to actually expand their lead but a drive would stall at the OSU 33-yard line where they would face a 4th-and-2 play. Sherman again decided to go for it. This time it fially paid off as Tannehill was able scramble for a 1st down. And then Tannehill threw a strike downfield just over an OSU defender, laying perfectly over the shoulder of WR Uzoma Nwachukwu to make the catch in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown. 42-31 A&M.

However, the Aggies were not allowed to get to comfortable because the Cowboys wasted little time before Weeden dumped it off to HB Jeremy Smith on screen. The tailback then broke an arm tackle and housed it for a 28-yard touchdown. And Weeden was able connect on a pass in the end zone to quickly make it 42-39 A&M with still 2:39 left to go.

Texas A&M took over and tried to milk the clock, but the Aggies were forced to punt with 1:31 still left on the clock. Oklahoma State would start the drive at their own 20-yard line. Weeden had already broken the school record for most passing yards in a game, but it would all be for nothing if he was unable to get the Cowboys into scoring position. After two incomplete passes, Weeden was sacked. So it would all come down to 4th-and-18. Weeden dropped back to pass, threw to WR Tracy Moore for a short gain, hoping he could somehow find a way to make a play, and pick up the first down. But it was not to be, as the Aggies tackled him well short of the marker. The Aggies set up in the victory formation and came away with major comeback in another Big XII barnburner.

                              UCLA 2-1 (0-0) at Oregon State 1-1 (0-0)

Corvallis, OR - UCLA was coming into Reser Stadium riding high after defeating the Texas Longhorns for the second year in a row. While Oregon State was looking to get over a heart-breaking loss to Wisconsin. The Beavers had two weeks to prepare for the Bruins since they had an early bye week after the loss up in Madison. Apparently, the time off helped because the Oregon State put together a nice openening drive that was balanced and methodical. OSU QB Ryan Katz was able to connect with WR James Rodgers over the middle on a deep in-route which Rodgers took for a 33-yard gain to the UCLA 16-yard line. Not long after HB Ryan McCants took it seven yards up the gut into the end zone to cap off a 7-play, 76-yard drive that took up nearly half the 1st quarter. 7-0 OSU.

The Bruins were then able to put together a decent drive as well but a long possession was halted by holding call that backed UCLA up to a 3rd-and-16. UCLA QB Richard Brehaut's pass was broken up and the Bruins had to settle for a 41-yard field goal attempt which split the uprights. 7-3 OSU.

The second possession for Oregon State did not get off to a great start as Katz was sacked. However, on 3rd-and-19, when it appeared the Beavers would go three-and-out, Katz bombed it deep to Rodgers who despite his dimunitive size, lept up and made the catch along the sideline, and continued downfield for another ten yards or so for a huge 72-yard reception to put the Beavers at the UCLA 11-yard line.

And on the very next play, Katz got the ball out over the middle just before being decked in the pocket. But the pass was thrown right on the money to Rodgers coming across on a slant for an 11-yard touchdown. 14-0 OSU.

The 2nd quarter opened with the Bruins struggling to get anything going on the ensuing possession and UCLA went three-and-out. The Beavers took over and Katz decided to test the opposite side CB by going deep to WR Markus Wheaton, but this time UCLA CB Aaron Hester was able to come down with the interception. The UCLA sideline erupted as something had finally gone their way.

Though UCLA would again go three-and-out. And it was not long before well-oiled offensive machine rolled back into the red zone. Where Katz threw a 5-yard strike to Rodgers in the end zone who came up with the touchdown catch despite tight coverage. 21-3 OSU.

UCLA continued to struggle offensively as their pistol offense was being shut down in the run game. So Brehaut decided to test the OSU secondary by throwing up a preayer to 6'5" WR Nelson Roario who used his size to go up and make the 55-yard reception to get the Bruins to the OSU 14-yard line.

And the Bruins were later able to take advantage of the big play when Brehaut found WR Randall Carroll open in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown. 21-10 OSU.

Oregon State would get the ball with still 1:07 left to go in the half. Still plenty of time for the Beavers to try and score. Katz tried valiantly to get a two minute offense going, getting the Beavers out to midfield before being sacked. So on 3rd-and-17, Katz went deep to WR Markus Wheaton who had beaten the press coverage and was wide open. Unfortunately, the pass sailed well over Wheaton's head for what surely would have been an easy touchdown. As a result, the Beavers punted and UCLA ran out the clock to take it to halftime.

The Bruins would look to continue their success from the previous drive but instead Brehaut was sacked by OSU DE Taylor Henry to force UCLA three-and-out. UCLA's defense continued to be able to find an answer for covering OSU WR James Rodgers as the Beavers went right back to their playmaker on pass over the middle. However, Rodgers paid the price, making the catch, but leaving the field with an apparent knee injury. Reser Stadium became eerily silent, knowing that last year Rodgers had missed most of the season with a major knee injury. Without Rodgers, Oregon's State's drive halted but the Beavers were able to tack on a 43-yarder. 24-10 OSU.

UCLA now was playing to get back into the game until a Brehaut pass over the middle into double coverage resulted in OSU FS Lance Mitchell making the interception, and taking down the sideline all the way back for a 77-yard pick-six to bring Reser Stadium to a frenzy. 31-10 OSU.

Just like that, the Bruins were now down by three scores, and would follow up the interception return with a three-and-out. Reser Stadium applauded when the fans saw WR James Rodgers out to return the ensuing punt return. Though OSU would go three-and-out.

Heading into the 4th quarter, UCLA needed to make a play to have any chance of getting back into the game so Brehaut went back to the well, bombing it deep to WR Taylor Embree who despite double coverage, lept up and made the catch at the OSU 2-yard line.

And on 3rd down, Brehaut threw out to the flat to and TE Joseph Fauria who took it in for a 3-yard touchdown. 31-17 OSU.

Oregon State was able to march right back down the field into the red zone with another good drive until Katz decided to force a pass into WR Jordan Bishop. UCLA FS Dalton Hilliard stepped in front to make the interception.

With 4:22 left in the game, UCLA had plenty of time. However, the Bruins would go three-and-out. And on the ensuing possession, OSU HB Ryan McCants weaved against the grain to find a huge opening, and outraced the UCLA defense to the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown scamper. 38-17 OSU.

The touchdown run by McCants pretty much put the game away. But UCLA was not about to give up as Brehaut put together the best looking Bruin drive of the game and capped it off with toss to HB Jonathan Franklin who sped around the right side for a goal line touchdown. 38-24 OSU.

However, the game was over for UCLA when the Beavers recovered the onside kick, and OSU was able to milk the clock on the ground with McCants. The Beavers down UCLA to open their first Pac-12 game with a win.
