Defense dominates in Fall Game, but starting offense makes plays

QB Cam Jackson with a 63-yd touchdown CATCH.

        August 9, 2020
        The Roll Wave Report

The offense did have some moments in yesterday's Fall Game, but the defense dominated en route to a 14-pt victory. With the win, the series is tied at 2-2 all-time. The position battle at WR appears to have settled itself, with Joe Fernandez separating himself from the pack, but the other battles remain cluttered. On defense, Jabari Barrett made numerous plays in the secondary; and the linebacking corps showed its depth with a few players stepping up. But it's likely that those position battles won't be settled till close to the opener.

Adam Barnes led the 1st-string offense and didn't do bad. The pass protection wasn't great for him, but he made plays. He had a great pass to Chris Davis that went for 34 yds, and that drive was capped off with a T.C. Pickens TD run. After a successful 2-pt attempt, the offense led the defense 8-5. Barnes was decent passing the ball, going 10/16 for 108 yds, but he missed on some reads at times. This is why Coach Willingham announced he was having a "QB Competition." Cam Jackson led the 2nd-string group and moved the ball a bit better. The running game was strong and Jackson hit the bulk of his passes. This is where Joe Fernandez stood out, catching 4 balls for 34 yards. He finished with 5 catches for the game, and a 8.0 YPC rate. Eric Foreman added 57 yds & a TD in the Second Period. Jackson did throw an INT to OLB Ron Willis, but the offense took a 25-20 lead into the break.

QB John Moore led the 3rd-string unit, and that's when things began to fall apart offensively. Moore was terrible to say the least, just terrible. 5/12, 39 yds, 3 INT. Yeah...that's not going to get it done. Four of his five possessions ended in turnovers, all his fault (the fourth turnover was a lost fumble). No points were scored on offense. Ron Willis wreaked havoc in the Third Period, nabbing a pick & a fumble recovery. Jabari Barrett also did damage too. In the Fourth & final Period, redshirt freshman Austin Preston came out and made a few plays. Then in epic fashion, he collapsed. He started off with a pass to Cam Jackson. Yes, the QUARTERBACK Cam Jackson. That pass went 63 yds for a touchdown (pictured above), and was arguably the highlight of the entire scrimmage. They converted the 2-pt attempt, tying the game at 33. Then Preston exploded. The second-year player from last year's recruiting class tossed a few awful passes, 2 of them landing in the breadbasket of CB Jabari Barrett. Like we said earlier, Barrett was BEAST MODE in this game. After tossing the TD, Preston threw 4 INTs back-to-back-to-back-to-back. He ended the day completing only 5 for 10, but had the most passing yds of all the QBs with 134.

CB Jabari Barrett was a force in this game, with 3 interceptions.

A few defensive players made their names known in the game. Shelton Mason had 2 early-game sacks, Christian Larsen was all over the place making tackles, Ron Willis had 2 INTs & a fumble recovery. And again, there was Barrett. The CB & LB battles didn't resolve themselves in the scrimmage, according to the coaches, so we likely won't hear about those till closer to the season opener. But for now, it appears Joe Fernandez has locked himself a spot in the starting WR crew. Adam Barnes may have kept his job as well, despite the less-than-stellar performance. The defense made plays in the second half, en route to the 47-33 victory.

Back to fall practice. The season opener is in a few weeks against UConn.

              2020 ACC Conference Outlook

              August 17, 2020
              12:00PM

Per results of a survey taken by numerous members of the media, the ACC has released its official outlook for the 2020 Football Season. Clemson is the popular pick to win Group A this season, while Tulane is the pick to win Group B. Clemson won the ACC last season in a beat-down of Virginia Tech, and rolled to an Orange Bowl victory over Marshall; Tulane won the American Athletic Conference last season outright before beating Oregon in the Rose Bowl. The Green Wave are in their first year in the ACC and have high expectations. They return most of their offensive firepower from last season, including QB Adam Barnes & RBs T.C. Pickens & Eric Foreman. The Tigers lost a bunch on the offensive side of the ball but should still have enough to compete; their defense will be their strength in 2020. A strong D-line led by senior DT Landon Sullivan, a LB group led by senior Tony Fields, and a shutdown secondary will be the Bane of numerous opposing offenses for Clemson. Lucky for them, they don't face Tulane's high-powered rushing attack in conference play this season.

In other notable news, Notre Dame begins their first ACC season projected to finish 4th in the conference overall (2nd in Group B). The Hokies who were dominated in the ACC Title Game last year are slated to finish 3rd in the conference. North Carolina, Florida State, West Virginia & Syracuse round out the top half of the league. Group B this season looks to be the stronger division on paper, as the bottom 1/4 of the league all play in Group A this season.

ACC play starts with #18 Notre Dame traveling to Florida State on August 29.

NOTE: The number on the left denotes the team's projected finish in Group play. The number on the right denotes the team's projected finish in the conference overall.

Notre Dame, NBC work to create "ACC Sports Network"
Programming to include all ACC athletic events, including ACC Championship Game

                August 18, 2020
                1:30PM

It appears that fences have been mended between the University of Notre Dame & NBC Sports. Over a year after NBC reportedly voided its contract to broadcast Notre Dame football, both the school & the television network announced today that they have collaborated with the ACC to create a sports digital network that will broadcast all ACC athletic events. The network will be called "ACC Sports Network", or "ACCSN" for short. The format of the network will model that of the current NBC Sports Network format:
                • It will be a cable network, that will be part of the standard cable package for residents within the ACC viewing area.
                • The network will broadcast all ACC sporting events that haven't been licensed out to ESPN or other affiliates.
                • The network will be part of a sports cable package upgrade for those who don't live within the ACC viewing area.
                • The network will operate under the NBC scheduling format.

For football season, regional games will be broadcast on the ACC Sports Network, while one game will be broadcast nationally on NBC's main channel. This game will be dubbed the "ACC Game of the Week". The conference also announced today that the ACC Conference Championship Game will move to NBC as well. The game had previously been broadcast on ABC since the installment of the CCG in 2005. Moving the game to NBC will hopefully increase viewership, as they won't have to compete with other programming on ESPN.

John Swofford (ACC Commissioner): "We're excited to begin this new partnership with NBC Sports, as this gives us a chance to showcase our 16 schools in ways never done before. We're also happy that Notre Dame & NBC were able to work out their differences to see that this gets done."

ACCSN will also broadcast original programming that includes documentaries, and inside looks at various schools. NBC hopes that with both Notre Dame in the conference, as well as the ACC's expanded footprint, that the network will be a huge boon. Here are the major media markets the ACC now has influence in:
                • Chicago
                • Boston
                • New York City
                • Pittsburgh
                • Philadelphia
                • Washington, DC
                • Richmond/Virginia Beach
                • Charlotte/Raleigh
                • Atlanta
                • Jacksonville
                • Miami
                • New Orleans

When asked about the new TV deal, most ACC football coaches were pleased.

Dabo Swinney (Clemson): "I'm really happy to see this get done. It will be great for our school, it'll great for our players. It'll also help us in recruiting, as we can now go into a recruit's living room and tell their parents 'You're gonna see your kid on TV every week!'"

Kaelyn Willingham (Tulane): "Oh, I think it'll be great for Tulane. It'll be great for our athletics program, it'll be a bonus for our school. Anything that benefits Tulane is fine by me."

Brian Kelly (Notre Dame): "I think it's great for Notre Dame. It's great that the school & the network were able to work out their differences to help push this thing through. Now we'll be able to give our recruits another reason why they should consider Notre Dame Football."

The ACC Sports Network will officially go live on September 1. The first "ACC Game of the Week" will be Tulane @ Notre Dame on September 5, at 8:00PM EST, live on NBC.

What? I thought the ACC was already a power conference. Guess I joined the wrong league. Should have taken the Big 12 offer when I had the chance!

                    Oh wait. That league collapsed...

Anyway, BC shouldn't be that bad this year. Though their schedule is brutal. They're hosting Tulane in October as a night game. You better not hope the Wave is rolling as usual by then. Or else it might crash into Alumni Stadium and flood the place.

Tulane releases 2020 Roster, Depth Chart

                      August 24, 2020
                      The Roll Wave Report

Less than a week before the Green Wave kick off the 2020 season against UConn, Coach Willingham has released the official roster & depth chart for this season. The team has red-shirted 9 players this season, 2 of which are not freshmen. Looking at the roster, you can see that the strength of the 2020 team is clearly offense.

                      ROSTER: RED represents red-shirted player.

On the depth chart, a few position battles have been resolved. Joe Fernandez has won the rights to man the slot WR position, while Christian Larsen has locked down the MLB spot. The CB battle ended in a dead heat according to the coaches, so Willingham decided to go with experience in that regard. Seniors Rob Bryan & Nate Stewart will take the top 2 corner spots, with Sidney Walker & Jabari Barrett coming off the bench. The Green Wave will start a freshman in the secondary, as Tim Dean has earned the starting FS job after an impressive fall camp.

For right now, Adam Barnes has kept his job at QB; but expect Cam Jackson's role to increase greatly in 2020.

Speaking of which, the coaches were impressed with Cam Jackson's play at WR during camp. After his performance in the Fall Game, expect Jackson to see time at WR in addition to QB this season. This should help out with the Wave's lack of experience at the WR position.

GAME PREVIEW - Another season of college football kicks off, and it's a big day for both of these programs. Tulane kicks off its first season in the ACC, and they begin the season ranked in the AP Top 10. UConn starts its first season as a member of the newly-formed Northeast Athletic Conference, or NEAC for short. On paper, this is a cakewalk for Tulane. They bring back most of their offensive firepower from last season, including their entire running game. The defense has some new pieces, but there's talent there. They should get good practice against a UConn team that is just BAD all around. Seriously, they're BAAAADD. They bring forth a capable RB in Andy Pierce & a good tackler in OLB Matthew McClain, but that's it. Expect Tulane to win easily.

I expect another big year on the ground with that talent running the ball, not to mention the OL... maybe not quite to the level of last season due to increased competition though. Keep that winning streak going one week at a time!

UConn is a joke (sorry Guru), so we should keep that streak going for another week. But Notre Dame looms ahead next week, and I'm seriously worried about that game.

You're right about expectations though. We ran for 5300 yds last season (an FBS record!). I don't expect us to get CLOSE to that this season. Let's be honest, our schedule was crap last season outside of a few games. But 4000 yds rushing is definitely in the cards. Heck, with the talent we bring back, 4500 might be likely.

Don't apologize to me. It's RT you need to be sorry for. #SOAR #FightOn. Or something like that. I'm part of that crowd where I can't root for the team I use, because UConn is the punchline of eastern college football. BCInterruption gives them crap all the time, and Diaco's antics off-field are just too comical.

Anywho, yes the ACC is a power conference. I just can't take them seriously as a power conference, and I can't wrap my finger around why. FSU is the only team with any big-boy bowl success lately IRL, so maybe that's it.

And your run game puts my numbers to shame, bud. Screw Marriner's 2K in my 'chise, you had multiple guys getting 1500 or more last year, or whatever it was. 5000 yards as a team is absolutely mind-boggling.
