Re: Supercharged | Pt. II (2018-): The Return of the L.A. Chargers

    "One More Year"
Rivers returns to camp for final NFL season

AP - The reigning NFL MVP is back. After a summer contemplating retirement, Chargers' quarterback Philip Rivers announced he will return for a 15th and final NFL season.

Rivers has not been shy over the past four years about his disdain for a potential move to Los Angeles, which coupled with his first MVP award and Superbowl win last season, led many to speculate the veteran would hang up his cleats following the team's move. But the longtime Chargers' quarterback was not ready to move on.

"I still got a lot of fight left in me," Rivers stated in a press conference at the Chargers' new Los Angeles practice facility. "Winning the Superbowl last year was a dream come true, but it also left a taste for more. I just love to play ball, love to compete. I couldn't leave yet."

"Family obviously always comes first, and that was my biggest concern over the summer. But we've discussed it and have agreed that it is possible for me to keep playing football for one more year. One last shot to give everything I have before it's time to settle down and start coaching somewhere back in San Diego."

Though his numbers dipped slightly in 2017, Rivers led the Chargers to a league-best 14-2 record to win the MVP award. He has thrown for 47,388 passing yards and 346 touchdowns in his career, good for 8th and 6th all-time.

With Rivers at the helm, the Chargers return almost the same roster as their Superbowl winning team from a year ago and should be in contention to defend their title.

Though Rivers will be participating in camp and drills, head coach Mike McCoy announced he will sit for the majority of the preseason.

Re: Supercharged | Pt. II (2018-): The Return of the L.A. Chargers

Chapter One (2018): Preseason Week 1

Third-year cornerback Stanley Bell picks off Andrew Luck on the second play from scrimmage.

      Bolts thump Colts
Rookies Nixon, Gonzalez dazzle in preseason opener

AP - In the first football game at the new L.A. Stadium, the defending champion Chargers opened the preseason right were they left off at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego last year: with a resounding victory. The Chargers suffocated the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason opener, easily winning 41-16.

While the big win on the scoreboard was nice for the sellout crowd excited to see football return to L.A., it was not necessarily the goal and does not realistically count in preseason. Like all preseason games, this was about evaluating players and systems. And like all preseason games, there were reasons to be optimistic and things to work on.

The good involved the play of some of the Chargers' young players. Stanley Bell, in his first look as a starter, made the decision to let Jason Verrett walk in free agency immediately look like the right choice, picking off Andrew Luck on the game's opening drive. Sixth-round draft pick Romel Nixon caught two touchdown passes, including a 77-yard catch-and-run. Both touchdowns came from veteran quarterback T.J. Yates. And undrafted rookie running back Darrick Gonzalez broke a 39-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The bad largely involved the play of the second-team defense, who struggled to stop the pass. While the first-team unit defended Andrew Luck well, the backups allowed Colts' rookie quarterback Andy Brewer to complete 22 of 27 passes, including a stretch of 15 straight completions. The Bolts' defense, however, was brilliant in the redzone. For the most part, they kept the Colts out of the endzone and came up with two second half fourth down goal-line stands.

The ugly involved the one thing every team dreads to see in preseason: an injury to a significant starter. The Chargers suffered that fate in the opener, as Ladarius Green left the game after only one touch. The initial diagnosis was a dislocated elbow, but Green will need to undergo further MRIs to determine if he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Yeah, I'm new to this whole relocation thing. Looks like the way it'll play out is as if the actual move will happen next year. But we'll just pretend for now

Chapter One (2018): Preseason Week 2

Undrafted rookie running back Darrick Gonzalez stiff arms Bengals' defender Jonathan Casillas to the ground on his way to his second touchdown of the preseason.

              Preseason Snoozer
Bolts pull away late from Bengals in sloppy preseason game

AP - This is why we have preseason games. And it is why fans dislike the preseason. The L.A. Chargers edged the Cincinnati Bengals 27-17 in a sloppy, emotionless preseason game that will give both coaches a lot of material to work with in preparation for the regular season.

To begin with, both teams suffered from anemic quarterback play. Bengals' starter Andy Dalton did not complete a pass, leading three three-and-out drives before taking a seat at the start of the second quarter. Bengals' first-round pick Lewellyn Cummings fared much better, potentially sparking the beginnings of a quarterback controversy in Cincinnati. But Cummings also made some crucial mistakes, particularly by trying to scramble when nothing was available and taking six sacks. He also threw a late interceptions in the shadow of his own goalposts leading to a Los Angeles field goal that ultimately put the game out of reach

The Chargers' quarterbacks were not much better. Worry might be creeping into the Bolts' coaching staff, as the heir-apparent to the eventual starting quarterback spot, Glenn Ponder, struggled for the second straight game. After throwing an early touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III, Ponder finished with two three-and-outs before taking a seat. The Chargers' other quarterbacks did not do well either. T.J. Yates was reckless and inaccurate, while Deshawn Todd was a bit more composed but struggled to push the ball downfield.

The one bright spot on the day was undrafted free agent acquisition Darrick Gonzalez who continues to impress and exceed expectations. The rookie out of Boston College is making a series claim for a regular spot in the offense, as he picked up over six yards per carry and scored a touchdown for the second straight game, leading the Chargers to pull away in the second half.

Sucks to hear that Rivers is retiring after this next season. Is he hurt? I noticed he didn't play in the first two pre season games. Who do you plan to move forward with at QB next?

He's not hurt, just digressing really fast. I'm a little worried he won't be as good this year and I'll have to adjust my gameplan. Regardless, by next year, Ponder should be far beyond Rivers in terms of OVR - he's already pretty much the same. And I haven't played Rivers yet just to protect him from injury, to get used to Ponder a bit before I need to move to him fulltime by next year, and to figure out who I want to keep as the 3rd string.

Chapter One (2018): Preseason Week 3

Glenn Ponder shows off his strong arm, launching a 29-yard touchdown dart off his back foot.

                      In Championship Form
Chargers' defense flexes muscles in win over Vikings

AP - Last season, the Chargers rode their powerful defense all the way to a Superbowl title. Now, as the 2018 season inches closer, that defense already looks primed to lead another championship run. The Chargers' defense - both the first- and second-teams - held the Minnesota Vikings to only two field goals in a 30-6 win.

While the defense deserves the credit for the win that pushed the Bolts to 3-0 on the preseason, they did get some help, particularly from an awful offensive performance by the Vikings. With Adrian Peterson in the game, they were not bad: Peterson carried the ball six times on an opening drive that resulted in a field goal. But once their star back took a seat, the Vikings failed to get another first down until late in the third quarter. Rookie quarterback Gordon Durham and former first-round pick Blake Bortles both struggled mightly, while backup running back Ka'Deem Carey could not find any room to run. The Vikes had only 73 yards of offense entering the final quarter.

Meanwhile, the Chargers' defense also got help from a typical Mike McCoy offensive performance: methodical, efficient and clock-owning. Sophomore quarterback Glenn Ponder played the entire first half and easily played his best game of the preseason. Ponder finally showed glimpses of why the Bolts spent a first-round pick on the former UCLA Bruin and believe he can eventually take the reins from Philip Rivers. Ponder showed poise in the pocket, and displayed his arm strength and his big body, throwing for two touchdowns and running for a third to lead the Chargers to a 24-3 halftime lead.

The second half was much of the same. While Bortles was able to muster some offense in the fourth quarter, the Vikings still only managed three more points. And while neither T.J. Yates and Deshawn Todd impressed at quarterback for the Chargers, they rode a powerful running game led by Cecil Faulk and preseason sensation Darrick Gonzalez to milk the clock.

The win, however, did come at a price for the Chargers. Second-year running back Ronell Haynes left the game in the second quarter with what appeared to be a serious shoulder injury. Haynes, who struggled in his rookie year, seemed primed for a breakout campaign and was battling Faulk and Gonzalez for touches behind Eddie Lacy. The 2017 third-round pick will undergo s-rays tomorrow and his status will be updated.

Agreed. That was the rationale with leaving him in for a full half this time, and it seemed to pay off. I'd still like his completion percentage to be higher, but maybe I'm just accustomed to playing with Rivers and completing 7 of 10 throws. But that will come with time, hopefully.

                            Thanks for checking in.

Chapter One (2018): Preseason Week 4

Colin Kaepernick breaks the contain of Jerry Attaochu and outruns Eric Weddle for a 60-yard first quarter touchdown run.

49ers' close out perfect preseason with win in Superbowl rematch

AP - Obviously, the San Francisco 49ers would have preferred a Superbowl win. They will still, however, happily take the small piece of vengeance: a thrilling 30-27 win over the L.A. Chargers in the preseason finale. Shaun Suisham kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to push the 49ers to 4-0 in the preseason.

In a match of two of the NFL's best defenses, the Chargers and 49ers combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense.

Though the final score was close, the 49ers will come away from this preseason match knowing their starters dominated the Chargers' first team. Reigning MVP Philip Rivers, in his first preseason action, looked rusty and tentative. Excluding a broken-coverage 59-yard completion to tight end Jacoby Trammell, Rivers only completed four of eight throws for 18 yards.

His counterpart, Colin Kaepernick, put on a first-quarter show for the San Francisco faithful. After throwing a pick on his first pass attempt, Kaepernick responded with an electrifying 60-yard touchdown run and a 42-yard touchdown bomb to Michael Crabtree. Kaepernick and the 49ers' starting offense was nearly untouchable, gaining 200 yards of offense in the first quarter en route to a 14-0 lead.

The Chargers' settled in, however, getting good quarterback play from Glenn Ponder and T.J. Yates and getting a lot of help from untimely 49er penalties. The Chargers even led 24-20 as the fourth quarter opened. But an ill-timed interception from Yates led to a Colt McCoy to Vernon Davis go-ahead touchdown. And though Yates recovered and led a game-tying drive, the 49ers made the last possession count, milking the clock and booting the winning field goal as the clock hit zero.

After the exciting finish to the preseason, both teams gear up for the regular season, both hoping to return to the Superbowl. The Chargers and 49ers will meet again this season, and given the talent they each field, could even run into each other a third time in the Superbowl. Based on the thrill-level of their preseason game, would that be such a bad thing?
