With Philip Rivers out, the Chargers and Chiefs become remarkably similar: both with strong run games and a good pass rush that makes it tough to come back on. Re: Supercharged | Pt. II (2018-): The Return of the L.A. Chargers
Chapter One (2018): Week 5
Rookie Darrick Gonzalez finds the endzone for the first time in his career late in the first half.
Bittersweet Victory
Chargers trounce Chiefs but add to growing injury list
AP - The Los Angeles Chargers' Superbowl hangover seems to be manifesting itself as a revolving door to the medical room. The Chargers turned in their second straight impressive victory, dumping the Chiefs 37-14, but continued to suffer key injuries on offense.
It all began on the first snap of the game when quarterback Glenn Ponder - already filling in for the injured Philip Rivers - took a hit as he threw the ball and came up favoring his throwing arm. He did not return to the game.
With Ponder out, the Chargers predictably relied even more on the running game. But late in the first half, star running back Eddie Lacy, in the midst of his best half of football all season, stayed on the ground for a considerable amount of time after an inside run. He did not return to the game.
Somehow, now without their top two quarterbacks, two of their top three wide receivers, and their top running back, the Bolts were able to turn in a 400-yard offensive performance. Third-string quarterback T.J. Yates fared admirably, spreading the ball around and getting help from a trio of Chargers' rookies: Justice Carter, Romel Nixon and Darrick Gonzalez. Yates completed nearly 60% of this throws for over 200 yards and a score, while finishing the game turnover free.
Thrust into the starting role, undrafted rookie Darrick Gonzalez turned in his best game of his young career, picking up over five yards a carry and adding a score late in the first half to send L.A. into the locker room up 13-7.
The biggest factor, however, in the Chargers' ability to maintain a high-level of play with their beat-up offense was their defensive play. For the second straight game, the Bolts' D was dominant. Though they did give up some yards in the passing game, including a 51-yard catch and run to Jamaal Charles in the second quarter, the Chargers' dominated third downs thanks in large part to their early-down run defense. Charles was held under four yards per carry for the first time this season.
All these factors - the tough defense and the offensive contributions from unlikely sources - allowed the Chargers to execute their ball control game plan to perfection in the second half. They exploded for a 17-point third quarter in which they dominated time of possession and put the game out of reach.
The Chargers now have clawed back to above .500 for the first time since Week 1. More importantly, however, they move to 3-0 within the division. They'll look to continue that hot division play next week in a crucial rematch at 4-1 Oakland.

NFL Top Ten: Week 5 RK (LW) Team Record Comments 1 (1) Tennessee Titans
4-0 Easily the NFL's most complete team: they have yet to give up more than 13 points while they have only been held to under 37 points once. 2 (2) San Francisco 49ers
4-1 In a battle of offense vs. defense, the Niners dominant defense won against the Cowboys. 3 (5) Baltimore Ravens
4-0 Beating the Bucs was the most definitive statement yet by the resurgent Ravens. 4 (4) New Orleans Saints
4-0 It was tougher than expected against Carolina, but the good teams always find a way to win. 5 (7) Chicago Bears
5-0 With the Packers and Vikings hot on their heels, the surprising Bears need to keep winning. 6 (3) Green Bay Packers
4-1 Though they were blown out for their first loss of the year, it did come in Seattle against a desperate 'Hawks team. 7 (8) Minnesota Vikings
3-1 The Vikes have yet to score less than 36 points in a game, but their defense can prove that Week 5's shutout was no fluke, they truly become a scary team. 8 (9) Los Angeles Chargers
3-2 The injuries on offense are concerning, but the way the Chargers' defense is playing is encouraging. 9 (10) Indianapolis Colts
4-1 A similar story as with the Chargers: somehow the Colts keep winning despite no Andrew Luck, largely due to good defensive play. 10 (-) Pittsburgh Steelers
3-2 The Steelers are still working out the kinks, but any Peyton Manning-led team will be good. Last edited by weddlesbeard; 07-24-2015, 10:55 AM.Comment

The Chargers thumped the Raiders in Week 4 at Los Angeles, but now look to repeat the feat in Oakland where the Raiders are unbeaten this year. The Bolts get starting quarterback Philip Rivers back from injury, though they will be without star running back Eddie Lacy. The Raiders are equally beat up, however, as they will be missing running back Danny Woodhead - the only Raider who did anything in the first matchup between these teams. Comment

Re: Supercharged | Pt. II (2018-): The Return of the L.A. Chargers
Chapter One (2018): Week 6
Justice Carter hangs on for his second touchdown of the game despite taking a big hit from Raiders' linebacker Ryan Shazier. The rookie is tied for the league lead with five receiving touchdowns this season.
He's Back
Rivers returns to lead Chargers to season sweep of Raiders
AP - Philip Rivers returned from injury after missing three games and picked up right where he left off with a performance you would expect from the reigning league MVP. The veteran Chargers' quarterback threw for 300 yards and two scores sparking a 31-21 win over the Oakland Raiders. It was the Bolts' second win over the Raiders in three weeks, giving them the key tiebreaker over their - to the shock of many - biggest challengers in the AFC West.
With no Eddie Lacy or Keenan Allen, Rivers' value to the Chargers shined bright as he led a masterful offensive performance against the Raiders' league-worst defense. With Darrick Gonzalez and Cecil Faulk struggling to get the running game going early, Rivers completed 15 passes in the first half for over 200 yards, getting help from some new faces. Rookie Justice Carter had another strong showing, catching two touchdown passes, while third-year receiver DeAndre Mason continued his breakout campaign. Mason, who had one catch in two years for the Chargers, has emerged as a solid slot receiver filling in for the injured Kam Agurs, making several clutch third down catches on Sunday.
The Raiders, on the other hand, did not roll over as easily as they did two weeks ago in Los Angeles. While their defense struggled to get off the field, their strong offense made the best of their opportunities. Journeyman running back Mikel Leshoure had the best game of his career, rushing for 114 yards on nearly seven yards per carry. Quarterback Cade Mays took advantage of the strong running game, stretching the Chargers' defense with his strong deep ball. Even when Mays left the game in the second half, backup Sean Renfree fared well, completing all seven throws he attempted.
The two explosive offenses made for an exciting first three quarters that saw four lead changes and a 24-21 Chargers' lead heading into the fourth quarter.
But that is when Philip Rivers really announced his return - not by gunslinging, not by dazzling, but by methodically putting the Raiders to sleep. With the help of the thumping running style of Cecil Faulk, Rivers led an extraordinary 19-play drive that took up nearly the entire fourth quarter. The drive saw the Chargers convert six third downs as well as a fourth-and-goal from the half-yard line when Faulk punched in the touchdown that iced the game.
The win pushes the Chargers back to the top of the division as they head into their bye. Despite the struggles and injuries they suffered early in their Superbowl defense, the 4-2 Chargers must feel good about their position; they are 4-0 within the AFC West and are starting to get healthy. They are expected to get some bodies back after their bye, which will be important as they head to Baltimore to take on the undefeated Ravens in Week 8.

5-1 Their surprising undefeated run came to an abrupt end Sunday. Now the Bears need to avoid getting overtaken in the competitive NFC North. 8 (-) Philadelphia Eagles
4-2 Overcoming a slow start to the year, the Eagles have won two straight and look primed to make a run at another division title. 9 (9) Indianapolis Colts
4-1 It's still a shock how this team is one-game out of the division lead after losing Andrew Luck for the season. 10 (6) Green Bay Packers
4-2 Two straight losses and suddenly the Pack look vulnerable. Comment

5-2 A tough loss at the hands of a good Green Bay team this week, though the 49ers are still in control of the NFC West. 6 (6) Los Angeles Chargers
4-2 A win in Baltimore would give a resounding statement that the Bolts are back in Superbowl form. 7 (10) Green Bay Packers
5-2 What a way to rebound after two straight losses: beating the 49ers in Santa Clara. 8 (-) New York Giants
5-2 Second-year passer Chester Mahone is giving Giants' fans a reason to forget about Eli Manning. 9 (7) Chicago Bears
5-2 In the NFC North, two straight losses will bring you from one of the last undefeated teams to only a game out of the division basement. 10 (-) Detroit Lions
4-3 The Lions have already doubled their win total from a year ago, thanks in large part to Calvin Johnson being Calvin Johnson. Comment

The Chargers seem to have their Superbowl hangover behind them as they have won three straight. They also get back two key offensive players from injury - Keenan Allen and Eddie Lacy - just in time to take on the #2 ranked Ravens' defense. Comment
