      Tyler Kozlov
      1st Year with the Team

Tyler Kozlov joins the Utah State Aggies after three very successful years with the Akron Zips football program. Kozlov led the team to back to back bowl wins and a MAC Championship, the first two bowl victories in school history and just the second conference championship. Jointly, the Zips had their best ever record a year ago when they compiled an 11-3 record en route to their MAC Championship and Go Daddy.com bowl victory. He also is riding a two game winning streak against ranked opponents coming into this season. Kozlov is a high energy coach who displays the drive to see his team succeed and his teams have been known to always fight to the final seconds regardless of the score. Kozlov will bring his high powered spread offense attack to Logan.

      Offensive Coordinator Brian Lindgren
      First year with the team

Brian Lindgren has had an odd path to Logan, staying in the mountain region throughout his recent career, his contract wasn't renewed with Colorado and proceeded to goto Idaho, the Vandals had a poor season but Lindgren was a stabilizing presence and was the only coach tenured in a coaching exodus. Lindgren however was made an offered from Utah State and will be coaching for his third team in as many years. He has had a long road to Logan but Kozlov hopes to retain him as a staple of this offense. Lindgren is a quarterback's coach and Kozlov will love having someone capable of grooming quarterbacks at the helm, especially in his pass happy attack.

      Defensive Coordinator Steve Stanard
      1st year with the team

Stanard will be yet another new coach in this system as Tyler Kozlov looks to revitalize the dilapidated foundation at this football program. Stanard was a staple at Wyoming for four years where he turned the defense around to a decent member in the Mountain West. While Stanard tried taking on Massachusetts and helping build that program up, the coach didn't pan out and opted to take a dive into the carousel, turning up at Utah State. The Aggies will look to his veteran knowledge of the game as they hope to keep this defense performing at a high level for years to come.

        CAC Team Projections

        Eric Grant (HC) Idaho
"There's really only one truly winnable game on this schedule, Wyoming, along with several toss-up games against teams similarly skimming along the lower range of college football: San Jose State, New Mexico to name a couple. It's not the toughest schedule in the country, just one not entirely conducive to a breakthrough season, and not one that leaves Idaho poised for anything close to six or seven wins and a bowl trip. There are too many holes for the Vandals to turn this season into something positive."

        John Valkyrie (HC) UL-Monroe
"The Warhawks look to Hunter to have a good year in 2016.

The Warhawks will be entertaining, at least, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on how well you remember the days prior to John Valkyrie's arrival. This program is always interesting: UL Monroe keeps things tight against most teams in its general stratosphere, making any projection a bit of a guessing game – or more of a guessing game, I'd say. When things work, the Warhawks combine a productive passing game, an underrated ground attack, a pressuring front seven and an opportunistic secondary to form an easy bowl team and an Sun Belt contender. When it doesn't, however, UL Monroe finds close quarters on offense and tough sledding on defense."

        Prediction: 5-7
        Best case scenario: 10-2
        Worst case scenario: 0-12

Quinn Retney (HC) of UMass Minutemen
"UMass' defense will look to Edmonds to lead them into 2016.

This is a team that does nothing particularly well: UMass is vanilla on offense, pedestrian on defense – at best, maybe – and short of any explosiveness, a trio of factors that when combined with a deadly opening stretch points toward a second-tier finish in conference. With several key pieces gone for the Minutemen, young bodies set for key roles and proven depth a significant concern, this seems like a transitional year – one spent treading water, if not a touch worse, while the underclassmen gain steam against American competition."

        Prediction: 1-11

Corey Warby (HC) of the UAB Blazers
UAB fans know Lisa is their man for 2016.

The number of changes – on the field and on the sideline – are matched by the number of holes dotting the two-deep. In the long run, change is good: UAB needs to bring in fresh blood to reverse this tide, even if we're looking at a multiple-year process before the Blazers are viewed as preseason bowl contenders. At the same time, this specific team has a number of issues to address throughout the roster before the opener; few positions are settled and even fewer secure, so the Blazers are clearly headed toward another losing season.

        Prediction: 2-10
        Best case scenario: 9-3
        Worst case scenario: 1-11
Games decided by less than 7: 8

Williams takes a pitch off tackle for a late touchdown

          vs

Ground dominance scoots Aggies past Utes to claim Beehive Boot

The Aggies started the first quarter with one completion and 27 rushing yards. Naturally with the offense struggling as much as it was, it's hard to expect them to come out victorious. It appeared the team was struggling to grasp it's new offensive concepts with miscues, poor execution and mistakes leading to two first half interceptions which would lead to 14 points for the Utes in the first half.

The Utes got on the scoreboard first, Dre'Vian Young helped bring the team downfield, with the successful option duo of Brandon Cox and halfback Troy McCormick churning up most of the yardage, with Young stepping in to give McCormick a breather, he did so successfully and would be the first score of the 2016-17 season for the Utah Utes when he took a carry untouched up the middle for a three yard touchdown. The Utes added a field goal in the second to extend their lead to 10-0.

The lead would get narrowed pretty quickly thanks to a Jipson rush, the wide receiver went in motion on an option play and ran the option beautifully with Hobbs, gaining 65 yards on his lone carry of the afternoon, the wideout struggled on the receiving end but his big run would put the Aggies deep in Ute territory and they would capitalize, with Hobbs leaving the game with a minor injury, his backup George King came in and ran the option beautifully as he would score a touchdown on the keeper, the back up quarterback notching the Aggies first touchdown of the season.

The Utes seemed to struggle for two downs, throwing two incompletions and their quarterback being chased from the pocket each time, but on third down and long, they ran a four verticals and a safety made a wrong read, leaving Kenric Young wide open on the fly, and the junior would be off to the races scoring an untouched touchdown to make it a 7-17 game heading into the half. To make matters worse, the first Utah drive resulted in 3 more for the Utes who would jump out to a 7-20 lead.

It wouldn't be until late in the third when the Aggies started pushing downfield thanks to some big runs from LuJuan Hunt, and making a brilliant playcall to run the option, the fake pitch to Hunt would be enough to send the Utes sputtering in the wrong direction and Hobbs would punch it in from 18 outrunning the defenders to the end zone and the score would be 14-20 heading into the final frame as the faithful and the Hurd came to life pushing for their Aggies.

And the Aggies responded, midway through the fourth frame they managed to push the ball downfield, once again with a punishing ground attack that saw them push the pace and take control of this game on the ground, the rushing tri-fecta of Hunt, Hobbs and Williams moved the ball downfield with fluidity and much like they've proven they like to do, on the goal line, they ran an option, Hobbs got caught up at the line and knowing he wouldn't get around them, he pitched the ball out to a wide open Williams who jogged into the end zone before celebrating his touchdown.

That would end up being the game winning touchdown after Cox threw his second interception inside of the Aggies thirty-five with the Utes driving, that big play would ultimately end the game. A pair of first down rushes would be enough, and the Aggies would line up in victory formation to kneel out the clock and claim their victory over their rivals.

In Kozlov's coaching debut, and home debut the Aggies took home a big victory, against none other than their hated rivals. The lone rivalry game that the Aggies will play all season. The Utes fall to 0-1, and much like the Aggies they are projected to have a down year in a very competitive Pacific 12 conference.

            CAC Update
            Week 1 Edition

The UAB Blazers took on their Sunbelt rivals in the New Mexico State Aggies for their season opener and Coach Warby's debut. Sadly for the Blazers, the Aggies offensive unit absolutely bullrushed the opposition and came out with a double digit victory over their conference foe. The Aggies have been among the top teams in the Sunbelt lately and they continue that trend with an opening week victory. Nearly 400 yards of offense helped send the Aggies over the Blazers.

The Minutemen started the 2017 season where they left off a year ago, against one of the best teams in the nation they fell hard. Their losing streak extends but it'd be hard to imagine it any other way. The Florida Gators came in high and are expected to be a contender for the playoffs, the Minutemens loss while difficult to stomach in the short term, was to be expected. The Gators came in 40 points favorites, while they beat the spread, experts had this one tagged as a blow out, and there is easier games on their schedule to take advantage of and get that illusive first victory in the career of Coach Retney.

The final two coaches didn't have an opening week game.

              Week 1 Recap

The biggest news of the weekend came from Honolulu where the Michigan Wolverines were looking to start their season in a vibrant area surrounded by fantastic weather and the entire Hawai'i experience. What truly happened though was the Wolverines got dominated in a game they were huge favorites in. It's unclear if the team was just unprepared or whatever miscommunication may have happened that had caused a 38-20 defeat at the hands of the Warriors, but this loss could virtually eliminate them from playoff consideration in just the first week of the season.

In a big opening weekend matchup, the South Carolina Gamebirds saw their heisman contending quarterback take care of business in their rout over the LSU Tigers. Leonard Fournette ran for over 100, but the Tigers lack of multi-dimensional offense spelled defeat against a team that is built better all around and offered a more balanced look against their opposition.

In another big upset, the Rutger Scarlet Knights who are barely considered a bowl option stunned the UCLA Bruins thanks to their quarterbacks tremendous performance, tossing and running for over 450 yards on the day accumulating a tremendous amount of respect and some heisman hype after the Knights tore down a playoff squad from a year ago.

In a B1G/SEC clash, the Alabama Crimson Tide took care of the Spartans on their home turf, rallying from a 14-0 deficit to claim a 20-14 victory over the Spartans. A loss here would've had Nick Saban's seat feeling entirely too hot, and that would be quite a difficult way to start the season once more outside of the top 25. The Tide can breath a sigh of relief and look forward to more managable games in their schedule.

Thanks, it's really hard, I have to run an offense completely opposite to Akron to be successful at the moment, not too much talent in the receiving core and my quarterback isn't overly accurate, it mixed with my sliders are making things really tough on offense, it's a nice challenge!

Coach Warby should be expecting his first win in the coming weeks! UAB is a sneaky, decent team, especially in the Sunbelt they should be competitive.

Offense sputters, defense can't hold down Maryland

Utah State came in flying high following their victory over their rivals and their aspirations to open the season with two wins, doubling their output from a year ago seemed well and alive, especially so as the Aggies put up the first points on the board in the final minutes of the first quarter when Damion Hobbs kept an option and took it untouched for a 22 yard score outrunning the safety to put up the first points on the afternoon. Yet for the Aggies that would be the end of their scoring performance, at least on the offensive end.

The Aggies defense had a safety sack on Rutledge in the third quarter, a rare key moment for the Aggies defensive unit in this one. It would put the score back to a one possession game making it 9-16 in favor of Maryland, even so this wasn't meant to last and the Terrapins piled on 14 in the final quarter to make it a true rout and end the game with a 9-30 victory in favor of their home crowd.

Garrett Rutledge was phenomenal for the Terrapins with over 200 yards passing and 165 yards on the ground and 3 total touchdowns the sophomore quarterback played with a chip on his shoulder and if the quarterback could play this way all season than the expectation of just one victory could easily be pushed to more than just one. As was the preseason expectation.

Maryland roared once they surrendered their first touchdown, scoring 16 unanswered to ultimately steal the game from the Aggies, allowing Garrett Rutledge to run free for 81 yards to break off a tremendous run would be the start of the end, as the Terps took a 9-7 lead with a missed extra point. Answering that was Rutledge connecting with freshman Jeff Chase for his first of two touchdowns on the day. The score being 7-16 heading into the half, the Aggies got some excitement in the second half as Garrett Rutledge would see a huge amount of pressure off the edge and would drop his shoulder, taking the sack to prevent a turnover in the endzone, but it would be a safety.

The energy returned to the Aggies but they just couldn't convert, never once going past the midfield marker. The Aggies offense just couldn't engage against the Terrapins. The Utah State Aggies without much offense and the defense just fell apart led to the rout, as the Terrapins put up 14 unanswered to round out the final frame, ending up with a 30-9 victory over Utah State on a beautiful Saturday in Maryland. The Aggies fall to 1-1 and head into their bye week on a bit of a downer, with Alabama looming, it's difficult to see them having the start Kozlov hoped for.

The Utah State Aggies with a 1-1 record will have their biggest challenge to date coming up when they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide. There are a lot of issues to address, accentuated by this game. The offense just doesn't have a goto option to bail them out, and the defense lacks solidarity. It needs unison.

In his post game interview, Tyler Kozlov promised that, "Improvements will come from this team, we aren't about to lose 11 straight to close out this season. We have a long way to go to be competitive in the Big 12 but don't write this team off just yet. There is passion, a desire to win and perform for our city, our college. This is my first loss with the program and I don't plan on making it a tradition, we've tied the past two season win records in just one week, we have to continue to grow from this and not allow ourselves to be beaten by the media. Teams make mistakes, and a few errors turned this into a rout, that doesn't mean it's tradition. No, don't read into this loss too much, we are back to business and making a gameplan to beat Alabama on Monday."

My save got corrupted somehow luckily I had a backup at the start of the season, some scores changed since I simulated to get back to where I was but I made sure that usu won against Utah and lost to Maryland, I'll be making an update about that all in the near future there won't be any around the ncaa update for week 2 I'll have cac updates though and I'll update with changed scores.

                        Week 2 Update

Corey Warby (HC) of the UAB Blazers (SB)
                        (1-1)(0-1) W 23-20 vs Georgia Southern (FCS)
                        379.3 YDS (84) 20.3 PPG

Top Performer: Rodney Morris (TE) 11 Receptions for 203 ReYds 2 TD

This was an odd one for sure, with the Blazers piling up over 500 yards of offense, they somehow managed to only win by 3 despite outgaining their opposition by over 250 yards on the afternoon. It's an odd occurence that was further accentuated by their tight end completely outpacing both sides of the ball, Collin Lisa and Rodney Morris accounted for over 300 receiving yards, the Blazers tossed for 417. The Blazers will take this victory but it is an odd one for sure, and they will need to be able to put the ball into the end zone more in the future if they hope to be competitive in the Sunbelt this year.

                        416.3 DYDS (#84) 22.5 PAPG
Top Performer: Rufus Fagan (HB) 201 RuYds 2 TD

The Minutemen stayed true to the bread and butter of the Quinn Retney offense by rushing for over 300 yards on the afternoon, winning despite throwing just 53 yards from this offense. To make matters worse for Youngstown State, it wasn't even their starting halfback that broke the two hundred yard mark, back up Rufus Fagan had a career day that won't likely be replicated anytime soon, especially behind sophommore David Gray. This tremendous performance spurred the Minutemen beyond the Penguins to give Quinn Retney his first victory in his collegiate coaching career, ending the program's losing streak which spanned three seasons.

Top Performer: Anthony Monken (QB) 15-37 300 PaYds 3 TD 3 INT 30 RuYds

Junior quarterback Anthony Monken nearly had his team storming the field at the end of their matchup with the Kansas State Wildcats, it wasn't meant to be however, there was hope when Monken hooked up with Nick Jones (TE) on a huge 52 yard pass completion late in the third to make it a 24-31 game after the Warhawks rattled out 17 in the third to narrow the lead. An early touchdown from Jake Ertz in the fourth quarter would provide enough separation, the Warhawks would score again but it wouldn't be enough as they fall to the Wildcats.

Top Performer: Benjamin Watkins (WR) 1 Rec 64 ReYds

The positive to this game? In his first career game, Benjamin Watkins earned player of the game honors by blazing past his corner and pulling down a huge reception to give the Vandals their biggest gain on the afternoon. The bad? They wouldn't pass the fifty again in the entire game. The Vandals came in 29 point underdogs and the Cowboys beat the spread, showing to be every bit as dominant as preseason expectations pegged them to be. The Cowboys forced a single turnover but had an insane 31 first downs and steamrolled the Vandals with 620 yards of offense.

Yikes. That was closer then expected. Looks like UAB can move the ball but can't punch it in. Should be interesting moving forward.

That sucks about the corrupt save but I am glad you were able to start over without too much damage.

                            Week 3 Update

Corey Warby (HC) of the UAB Blazers (SB)
                            (1-2)(0-1) L 21-24 OT vs UL-Lafayette

Top Performer: Jeff Briscoe (QB) 24-52 36 PaYds 3 TD 2 INT

UAB had the game sealed, taking a 21-7 lead into the final frame, it appeared the Blazers had every chance to take this one but it wasn't going to be. 17 unanswered points including the game winner in overtime were enough to send UAB home with a 1-2 record. A difficult loss to stomach given the Blazers held control of this game through three quarters, but they just couldn't pull out the victory.

Quinn Retney (HC) of the UMass Minutemen (AMER)

Top Performer: David Gray (HB) 155 RuYds 1 TD

In-state rivals did battle as the Minutemen made the drive to Boston to take on the Boston College Eagles, but it didn't end anywhere near as they had hoped. Thanks to a 4th quarter barrage that led to 21 unanswered for the Eagles who turned a 14-21 lead into a 14-42 rout nearly instantly, scoring a pair of touchdowns within two minutes in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

John Valkyrie (HC) of the UL-Monroe Warhawks (SB)

Top Performer: Anthony Monken (QB) 18-33 169 PaYds 1 INT 33 RuYds 1 TD

Monken attempted to do everything he could to get his team ontop but it just wasn't meant to happen. The offense just couldn't get meaningful production and for the second straight game the Warhawks fall to their opposition.

Top Performer: Matt Linehan (QB) 17-31 209 PaYds 3 TD 8 RuYds

Idaho gained it's pivotal first victory by knocking off the Temple Owls on Saturday in what was the first victory for Eric Grant as head coach of the Vandals. The Vandals controlled this one throughout and never fell behind, rushing out to a 10 point lead in the first half before conceding points to the opposition, a 21 point explosion in the final frame would be enough for the Vandals to claim victory.

                              Utah State Offweek news

The season might still be young and the action still warming up. Despite this there is a lot of news swirling around the campus as the football team prepares for it's tough matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the coming week. The Tide are undefeated and ranked #11 in the country, a tremendous talent that will be difficult to beat, and with Nick Saban actually on the hot seat, expect the coach to go out of his way to annihilate anyone that stands in his path.

This leaves the Aggies at odds. Their passing game is still young and unrefined, players have issues making contact receptions and making short gains into long ones, while the rushing game is talented but held back by average at best blocking. Needless to say, the Aggies will be in for quite a game in the coming weeks, but with the news that Tyler Kozlov will be focusing upon a more spread option based attack, the Aggies will hope to utilize motion and speed to catch the Tide off balance.

Recruiting news was big this week as the Aggies managed to sign not one but three recruits. The biggest one is a big runner from Texas, the #3 halfback in this years recruiting class in fact. Running back, Teofilo Outlaw will be joining the Aggies ranks as a 5* prospect, the first ever to attend Utah State and the first from Tyler Kozlov's coaching career. Outlaw commited fast, attributed to the Aggies recruiting presence in Texas as a pipeline and a desire to play at the youngest age possible influenced Outlaw to join the Aggies. Outlaw has tremendous speed and strength which makes him a viable dual threat back that can dominate in the Big 12. Some have even drawn comparisons to Adrian Peterson at a high school level when it comes to Outlaw, a true honor of a comparison and if he can live up to the hype, he will be a tremendous talent.

Second, junior college wide out Jonathon Saunders will be joining the Aggies as yet another solid option in the passing attack. Kozlov has worked wonders with junior college wideouts, his latest Jeff Parker had a career year in his final season at Akron and Kozlov will definitely aim to groom Saunders in a similar manner that he had Parker. Saunders has tremendous speed and his ability to run routes is already at an elite level, his main question marks is his hands, and he has been known to shy away from contact over the middle.

Third, Erich Di Stefano joined on as a three star quarterback prospect from the state of Texas. The quarterback is a tremendous athlete with a cannon for an arm. Drawing some comparisons in play style to Michael Vick, the future is definitely bright and especially so with the graduation of Damion Hobbs, don't be shocked to see the freshman compete for a starting job in his first fall.

Three new players to ring in Kozlov's offense will definitely help this unit get more of an identity. The offense hasn't been too strong thus far and while the additions won't help this season, at the least the Aggies already have a reason to look forward to next year with three young exciting prospects already lined up.

                                Week 3 Recap

Ohio State continues towards defending it's national title with another week atop the polls in college football, but the football world wasn't without upsets. Don't look further than the ACC newcomers in Notre Dame to keep an eye on your upsets. The Fighting Irish dipped against the newly ranked North Carolina Tarheels in a one sided affair, a game the Irish were two touchdown favorites in. Afterwards Brian Kelly just stated disbelief in the end result, unable to come to grips with his teams inability to even put up a fight against a weaker foe.

The Bulldogs righted the ship somewhat, by besting the South Carolina Gamebirds in a tightly contested matchup that featured a Heisman favorite on the opposite end of the field. The Bulldogs took a 7 point victory. While in state, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets downed Florida State to hand them their second consecutive loss on the season, which has them out to a disappointing 0-2 start. Joining them in the surprise winless programs is the Oklahoma Sooners who botched their Big 12 opener against West Virginia, proceeding to fall to the Mountaineers of West Virginia in a 49-41 thriller.

In a slow week of news, the two players of the week had tremendous performances, Drew Johnson of the Iowa Hawkeyes accumulated three turnovers to lead his Hawkeyes over the hated Cyclones of Iowa State, while Western Kentucky saw their quarterback score 7 touchdowns as his team ran away with a 30 point victory over the UCF Knights.
